Was waiting for Mom at an appointment and needed something close. This pequeno restaurante is located on Jones, between 1960 west and Fallbrook. The inside was clean, with brightly colored interior and traditional music playing. I was seated and taken well care of by Mary. Started with an Horchata, my childhood favorite and it was delish! Asked Mary what she liked as it all looked good on the menu. When she suggested the pupusa I was thrilled. She brought the crispy bread sticks with butter and a side of pickled slaw while I waited. When the fajita pupusa came out I could see it was going to be amazing, thin Maiz full of queso and fajita meat. Grilled perfectly so the cheese that melted out was seared just right. I added a side of refried black beans and rice. Layering everything with the pickled slaw was heaven in every bite. Truly a Salvadoran treat! Speaking of treats, there was a case all along the right wall full of fresh pastries. Had to get the Boy a sprinkled short bread cookie while I was there. My meal was simple but have no fear.... There's a lot of great places for Pupusas and Salvadoran food around Houston, but these are some of the absolute best pupusas that we've had. We've become somewhat regulars here because we do love pupusas. Amazing taste, greasy, perfect. Will be back here again on a regular basis because of how good and cheap these delicious fried Salvadorian Delights are. Make sure you slather them in sauce because they're even better that way, and most of all make sure you eat them fresh and hot because that's how it's supposed to be. read more

The food here was really satisfying! My friend and I both chose the mixed plate that came with a corn tamal, pupusa (asked to swap the cheese pupusas for a revuelta), platano, and frijoles con crema. All of that was really good, except the tamal tasted like it had sugar added to it. That bothered me just a little, but it still tasted good. We also had an order of the yuca with chicharrones and that was soooo good! To drink, I had fresco de marañon, which is not served in a lot of places, so I was pleasantly surprised! It did not disappoint my expectations :) For dessert, we had the nuegados, which were fried in a flat shape like a pancake. That was new to me as I've always had them in little ball shapes. This is the first restaurant worthy of 1 star from me. The food is decent, nothing special but they have no process of operation, no customer service and are very rude. We called ahead for a pick up, the lady taking the orders must be hard of hearing because she totally botched our quantities. They quoted us 50 minutes, which is totally reasonable for pupusas. Once we arrived after an hour, the food was not ready and I was told 10 more minutes by the owner. That's fair. After 90 minutes our order was still not ready and the cashier let me know that there was still going to be a long time before it was done. This in my opinion is absolutely ridiculous. At this point I was fed up, I wanted to cancel my order but was rejected, so I asked to speak to the owner. He must've been to embarrassed to show his face, as previously, he was out front entertained by the soccer match. Sir, please don't focus on the game but on your establishment and clientele. At this point, a waitress passed by me and called me horrible. Lol. Abuela, the only thing horrible is this establishments service. I know losing my business probably won't affect their pockets but consider it lost. For what it's worth, just be prepared to wait a ridiculous time, and Be disrespected all while being served average food. Pro tip: all this could have been avoided by looking at the root cause of the issue, your cashier is not able to hear correct quantities over the phone. Had a cheese popusa and a fajita and cheese one as an appetizer followed by the San Miguel parillada. Popusa were a 3 out of five but the parillada was a huge disappointment in flavor. It was seasoned with what seemed mustard, the chuleta was tough, the chicken tasted too much of mustard, the fajita or beef was not all that good either put at least edible. The best part was the mushrooms that came as the side dish. We got 4 different types of pan dulce and only liked 1 out of the 4. I love this place. I'm always searching for authentic locations, "hole in the walls", and will often adventure into the depths of Houston or Chinatown to do so. However, when this originally popped up on my yelp a few months back, it was just in my backyard. So I took the chance, had no idea what a Pupusa was, invited some latino friends of mine, and adventured out to this location. It's a super low-key place. The pictures that are on the windows outside makes it almost look like a sketchy convenience store, trying to hide what's going on inside. Not the case, don't be scared. I also didn't know what door to open. Just choose the one that opens :). When I got inside, there wasn't a super friendly waitress waiting to serve my every whim. It was filled with latinos, I figured as a white dude, I could pretty much sit wherever, and they were going to see me :). As I looked over the menu, I'm not picky enough to need detailed explanations, so I just looked at some pictures, read the descriptions, looked through yelp photos, and made a decision. I was going to have the enchiladas. And Papusas. And Tamales. I figured that would be enough to fill me up. I was wrong. It was enough to fill me up to where if I swallowed any more, it would have come out of my ears like delicious Salvadoran noodles. Holy cow! Their refried beans here are a deep black, authentic color, all of the food is lovingly cared for and cooked fresh. It takes a while, so be patient. It's worth it. I don't think I've been here before and not waited 30 minutes for my food. That's okay, this is about enjoying the experience and your company. Plus, they have free crispy toast appetizers. The Papusas are like little thick homemade corn tortillas that are stuffed with cheese and other goodies. Almost like a quesadilla, but the cheese is completely encapsulated (except where it oozes out). They come with a vinegar (almost kimchi-like, but not fermented) cabbage Cole slaw that is awesome, and a must-try simply for the flavor and experience. It's okay if it's not your thing. The tamales are wonderful, and flavorful, and wrapped in banana leaves. Man!!! So good. Then there is the bakery. You have to come back a different day for this, because there's no way you left yourself enough room for desert, but the baked goods are authentic, diverse, delicious, and ridiculously cheap. The service is good if you don't expect them to speak perfect English and cater to your every whim, if that's the experience you're after, you're going to be happier going somewhere else. I try my best to order in Spanish, and hope that they can fill in the gaps. If they get my order wrong, it's probably my fault for trying to speak English in an authentic Salvadoran restaurant :). All in all, if you want some awesome food, an experience, and to get out without breaking the bank (a meal for my friend and I with multiple leftover bags was a whopping $19) this is a place I highly recommend to you! read more

I have been here a couple of times for breakfast, but when we recently tried it for dinner, we were pleasantly surprised with the difference between this food and Mexican cuisine. This is when you will truly appreciate that this is El Salvadoran food with different flavor profiles and spices. Since we had a restaurant.com coupon, we ordered a variety of items. I had a combination plate that had a pupusa, which was a flat like a flat corn cake stuffed with cheese. Very quesadilla-like but was exceptional with the coleslaw condiment. The hot, cheesy pupusa with the chilled, vinegary coleslaw was something I never experienced before and was delicious (5 stars). The tamale was wrapped in a banana leaf which gave the masa a different texture and flavor. My wife enjoyed the rest of mine as I definately prefer the corn husk type. (3 stars to me). The rice was also delicious and flavorful. My wife had a similar plate with a pupusa, but she had a flat corn cake without stuffing. Kind of tasty. She had tamale on a corn husk with crema which she ate before I could try. We ordered the cheese enchiladas to go which had a red sauce. The cheese was different and the spice of the red sauce was not what we were used to in Tex-Mex cuisine. While I personally was not a fan, my wife said she liked it. If you haven't tried El Salvadoran food, check your anticipated flavors of Mexican dishes and open your taste buds to a new cuisine.
