    Lunch at Cafe Mango.
    Michael R.

Cafe Mango was an unexpected choice for lunch in Fort William. Unfortunately, it was off hours and few places were open...and I couldn't do another fish and chips lunch, so I decided to go for Indian. The service was quite pleasant, contrary to other reviews and the food solid. I had the veg samosas to start and the Chicken Tikka Tandori. The chicken was nicely prepared as were the accompanying vegetables. The salad was nothing spectacular, but it was nice to have a small side salad. The garlic naan was hot and tasty, although the level of garlic could have been taken up a notch. Overall, I enjoyed my meal at Cafe Mango.

Just had a recommendation from a cousin who ate in here last evening. She has asked me to post her opinion of this eaterie. Absolutely b****y marvellous. So impressed they're going back tonight. Though Fort William is niceI do like it over in Fort George/Inverness way. Well, like it all up there, really.

Not once did he come by to see how we were doing. We ordered the chicken tikka masala. It's ala cart so you have to order rice separately and you have to order naan separately, etc. the dish came out and it looked good but they were stingy with the amount of chicken. It gets worse, I took a bite and it tasted like someone dumped a bag of sugar in it . Tikka masala should never ever be this sweet. This tasted like some kind of dessert. I wanted to spit it out but we were hungry so we ate it begrudgingly. I've had this dish many times around the world and this was by far the worst version. The sugar drowned out all the spices. The only saving grace was the tandoor chicken itself was tender and delicious. The garlic naan itself was fine, and it was pretty big. Glad we only got one. I honestly can't recommend this place based on my experience.

So with our hungry stomachs and tired feet, we sat down at the table we were escorted to. The server that we had was very good at his job. While we had certain menu items that we initially came here to get, we were convinced into getting several more appetizers and mango lassi drinks. He was very convincing (and also our hungry stomachs couldn't refuse). And the moment you said "yes", he was on it. Very good salesman, which I can't really fault him on that. In the end, we ended up sharing a few appetizers amongst the 4 of us. APPETIZER 1)Papadum & 2) Pickle Tray The texture of the papadum were great - very crunchy. By itself, it doesn't really have a taste. On the other hand, the sauces on the pickle tray were all flavorful and excellent. I enjoyed all of them. The papadum & pickle tray pairs well together. It can be eaten & devoured in minutes that way. Very addictive. An unexpectedly great appetizer choice and my recommended items. 3)Cheese Naan As in all Indian restaurants, the naans are great. Can't really mess it up. Always warm & soft to eat. The additional of cheese was new for me, but great nonetheless. It's a pull and put in your mouth kind of treat. ENTREE: Chicken Biryani I personally ordered the Chicken Biryani. The portion of the dish is great! I came in super hungry and I still wasn't able to finish it all. The rice tasted great. But the chicken was kind of disappointing... it was good, but the texture was harder than I would have liked. It was not at all soft to bite into. Therefore, I mainly found myself mainly digging out for the rice. Overall, appetizers were great. Entree was just okay. Business was very money forward from my first impression. For example: when we agreed to get papadum, he didn't even ask how many we wanted. He just gave us 6 pieces, which you have to pay individually for. We really would have been satisfied with 4 pieces (one for the each of us). Thankfully, it tasted great and we ate everything. But honestly, it would have been nice to know beforehand.

Ownership likely knows this, which is why I suspect they care very little about customer service or reputation. Like many of the reviews here, we found the gentleman manning the front to be a bit rude and curt, but they were pretty busy, which I suppose half-explains why we were told that our take-out order would require a whopping hour to prepare. Oh well *shrug*. A casual Indian restaurant with good service is a rare commodity in most places, and I say that on good authority because I'm Indian by heritage. Regardless, if you can tolerate some weird interactions, the food is genuinely quite tasty. I was honestly surprised. While I'm writing this several months after our UK trip and the details escape me, I know we ordered the chicken tikka masala (a must in Scotland, since it was invented in Glasgow!), a goat curry, paneer preparation, and a smattering of vegetarian items. Everything was rich, oily, fragrant, and spicy. It was just the type of rip-sticking fare you need after a long day of hiking.

He hurried back to the kitchen and got us the vegetarian uncooked ones . The only vegetables in it were bell peppers, onion and potatoes. The menu is pretty cool, with a few items on it that I hadn't seen before. I was feeling curious and, after we'd ordered some papadums with spicde onions and dips, I opted for a Moghul honey with lamb while my partner went for the lamb Shyheti Balti and we got rice and a Peshwari naan to share. His was the better dish, mine would have been better with chicken and while it was delicious it was sweeter and milder than I'd normally choose. Still, I enjoyed it very much and I'm sure the rest of the menu is great too. We took our time over the meal and the staff didn't rush us. It was a nice, warm place to sit for a couple of hours and I'd definitely come back again in the future. I noticed on our way out that they do also offer take away food and that it's 10% off the main menu, so that's probably worth trying at some point too.
