Plockton is a bit of a culinary food desert, so this Indian spot in nearby Kyleakin ends up being a fallback dinner option for a lot tourists and locals alike. Ownership likely knows this, which is why I suspect they care very little about customer service or reputation. Like many of the reviews here, we found the gentleman manning the front to be a bit rude and curt, but they were pretty busy, which I suppose half-explains why we were told that our take-out order would require a whopping hour to prepare. Oh well *shrug*. A casual Indian restaurant with good service is a rare commodity in most places, and I say that on good authority because I'm Indian by heritage. Regardless, if you can tolerate some weird interactions, the food is genuinely quite tasty. I was honestly surprised. While I'm writing this several months after our UK trip and the details escape me, I know we ordered the chicken tikka masala (a must in Scotland, since it was invented in Glasgow!), a goat curry, paneer preparation, and a smattering of vegetarian items. People look at you like you owe them money ! *The old man who took our order made a disgusting face when we started ordering vegetarian food. Made it look like we asked for something inedible. *The aloo gobi was under cooked (was very raw). The jeera in jeera rice was burnt. We ordered vegetable jalfrezi and they served us chicken. When we reconfirmed with the server he said "this is vegetable jalfrezi madam" I told him to check it as we could clearly see pieces of chicken in it. He hurried back to the kitchen and got us the vegetarian uncooked ones . The only vegetables in it were bell peppers,onion and potatoes. Not fair ! * Even after telling them that we will be paying by card, they kept asking us if we would pay in cash. Not worth it ! Don't waste your money. read more

Stopped in on my way to Portree from Edinburgh and it was amazing. The waiter was so friendly and attentive. The food was some of the best I've ever tasted. This restaurant rocks! My wife and I were on a tour out of Edinburgh, visiting from the US. We ate at the restaurant at Kyleakin on the Island of Skye. The food was fantastic. It was the Chilli Garlic Chicken with a Naan bread and Basmati rice. Not only was the food to die for, but the service was incredible. The waiters were very attentive, so as soon as you raised a finger, they were there to provide water, or anything you needed. Highly recommend this restaurant! read more

With a lack of commercialization around Kyleakin and plenty of hostels/B&Bs, this place has become pretty much the tourist destination (for lack of better words). For vegetarians, this is the place. For anyone wanting "exotic" food per se, this is the place. So that's what it is. The place itself is quite tiny. From what it looks like, it almost seems like a place that opens and closes right after the tourist season. But I can't confirm it. The place gets really busy though and reservations are needed. We had to put a reservation in and it would automatically default to one hour. They told us to come at a specific time rather than come when a table is filled. I think that's a bit weird in my opinion, but whatever. Anyhow, we get seated in an hour. We tried ordering vegetable samosas as vegetarians, except we found out they fried it with the chicken samosa in the same fryer. That's a bummer (I don't think they do it in the US), but I think that's due to the space of the kitchen area. As for the food, it does take quite a long time for it to come out probably due to the size of the kitchen. Also, there are a lot of big groups that come to eat here too. Anyhow we got our food. We ended up ordering some vegetarian dishes (i forget exactly what I ordered though) that was a variation of what we normally receive in the US. I thought the food tasted pretty good in my opinion. Had a nice kick to me. I enjoyed it. I wish there was a dessert menu though. And they tried to get me to pay cash instead of card. I know why they were doing this, but it shouldn't have happened. (not sure if the owners actually look at this yelp page, but just an FYI). We reached Portree pretty late on Friday night and this was the only restaurant open at that time. We were all really hungry but after this experience I think staying hungry would've been better. They were understaffed, the place was really hot with no ventilation and the beer tasted like water. Moving on to the food, this was quite possibly the worst Indian food I've had in my life. The naans tasted like the frozen naans, garlic naans tasted like garlic bread and the 2 curries we ordered were tasteless. Five stars for great food, one star for poor and bizarre service. The waiter we had would make Basil Fawlty seem normal. We came in, asked for water. He asked still or sparkling. We said just regular tap water. Guy rolls his eyes! Brings tiny bottles of water anyway. When we remind him we wanted just regular water, mutters something rude. Keeps trying to upsell us stuff we didn't want and expressing displeasure when we said no. Later in the night where we are from. We say New York. What follows is really weird small talk. Some samples. "why you Americans keep killing black people?" "Why black people in America do so much mugging?" "In London, everyone live like one happy family. You Americans are insane." Etc etc. At the ended of the day, when we put down our credit card, he refused to take it although we saw other customers pay that way. Kept whining until we gave him cash. Really bizarre experience. If you like spicy, flavorful, rich Indian curries, don't come here. The lamb (which was very tender) korma was bland-nothing interesting or complex about the flavors. The worst part for me, something I have never seen, was that the garlic naan didn't have pieces of garlic on it. Rather they used garlic powder. I have eaten in and taken away dozens of times (I come here a lot as nowhere else can match its beauty). Some of the curries are a little bland but most are excellent. Their vegetable samosas are the best I've had anywhere. When looking at other reviews, many are referring to the restaurant in Portree (I've not been there) but the one in Kyleakin (no Coop across the road) is very good and used to be completely brilliant (my favourite of all, from London to Scotland). Hopefully, they can recapture the quality of old days (~3 years ago) but in the meantime, this as good as most decent Indian restaurants. If you're being ripped off speak up and complain, they are very friendly and polite staff. read more

Taste of India is something of a novelty in this Highland village of Kyleakin - a curry house! And very good it is too! Formerly the Crofter's Kitchen which was a traditionally Scottish restraunt & cafe specialising in home baking, the Taste of India obviously - doesn't! I was first taken to the Taste of India at New Year when friends were up on holiday and suggested we try it. I must admit I'd rarely eaten curry before and wasn't really looking forward to it - but I hadn't realised that there are many different kinds of curry. The Taste of India will also deliver to within a 3 mile radius and offer free delivery for orders over £20. And they give a 10% discount on takeaway orders over £10. They are fully licenced. If I have one minor grumble that is that I do think the owners could make more of an effort with the decor - both outside and inside. The inside resembles a school dining hall with oblong wipe-clean tables. When it was the Crofte's Kitchen it had lovely wooden tables and wheelback chairs. There are grey curtains at the window which look most unsightly from the outside - from what I can see, it is an all-male staff and men are never very good with closing the curtains tidily! Taste of India will also cater for special occasions and, as a matter of fact, I have attended two local weddings where curry was served and it went down very well with old and young alike. Four stars from me - I've taken a star away because of the lack of thought in decor and presentation. read more

My friends and I came here after a long day as this was the only place that was open. The service was absolutely awful and we did not receive some of the items we ordered. When we asked about it the server said we had not ordered it, despite the server correcting our pronunciation of said menu items. The reason why people come here is because there are not much options in Portree but if you eat Indian food at any good restaurant In Glasgow or Edinburgh, you would know what Indian food tastes like. First of all I wish there was an option for negative stars and be able to get back the hours and 37 pounds I wasted in this place. I am not being fasicious, but this establishment is by far the worst restaurant I have ever experienced in my life. I was with a friend of mine and traveling through the highlands. We decided to try out Indian food in the UK because we heard so many good things about it. I am a Bengali American. I know how Indian, Pakistani, and Bengali food should look and taste like. We both ordered garlic naan and tiki masala, which is a simple but yet a signature dish of Indian cuisine. We waited at least 45 mins for the food to arrive. When the food arrived, we were automatically disappointed by its appearance. It looked like tomato sauce from Tesco and large cuts of poor quality chicken. It tasted very sweet for some reason as if they dipped pineapple into it with no hint of any spices not even parsley. So finally I went to pay for the bill, we tried to eat the food since we were hungry and already committed too much into it. They asked how was the food only because they know that we were already disappointed from our facial expressions. I told them it was complete garbage. At this point I was expecting an apology even if it was not genuine. However one of the waiters told me that Indian people don't like spices. It's like having a Greek person tell another Greek that we don't like feta cheese. I angrily dropped one pence on the table for tip and walked out. I've been to many dingy Indian food places that looked horrible from the inside and out, however still tasted better than this place. The workers and manager has no respect for their customers and should be ashamed of themselves for serving poor quality of food and calling it Indian cuisine. The place is very useful if you happen to be in Skye and must have Indian food. But the quality of the food and the service are not comparable to Indian restaurants elsewhere in England and Scotland. Our chicken tikka masala was bright red, indicating a lot of food color. The rest of the food was ok, not good but not bad either. In terms of service, they declined to put in another order of naan for us after we started eating (we realized we had ordered one too few) since they had other people to serve. As others said, the service was absolutely bizarre, almost like they did not want us there. Our food came out later despite us ordering before other tables. They brought the food out on carts, and while we sat closest to the kitchen they rolled the cart out to a table further away that ordered later, before serving our food. The Chicken Tikka Masala was like none other I have seen before. Unlike nearly every Indian restaurant I have been to in the many major Indian communities of US and Canada, this Butter Chicken was an odd purple/pink color that I have never seen before and did not taste anything like Tikka Masala. Yes, you can now have a decent Indian meal in this little Highlands village. Our tour guide gave us the rundown on the limited dining options in Kyleakin and we decided to go for it. Shrimp Rogan Josh was right on. A couple of the other dishes had a bit too much sauce for the amout of meat. Poor bits looked like they were drowning, and the sauces themselves were strangely sweet but not bad. Excessive but not oily, which is the usual fatal flaw with Indian food. The breads and the basmati rice were good. They serve a cheese naan which is a bit unusual as well. Service was fine, and prices were reasonable. Given the small number of options in the town, we were pleased to have a little break from Scottish food, even if the Indian wasn't flawless. read more

The food was alright, though not great. The low rating is more about the poor service. The was terrible pretty much from the start. When asked what we wanted to drink, we asked if mango lassi is available and the waiter said no. So then we said we will just stick with water. The waiter did not seem happy about it. When the waiter later came to take our order, we ordered a starter to share and then two main course, one of each of us, rice, and naan. The waiter then suggested that we order more starters and suggested a mushroom dish. We declined. If we wanted more food and wanted recommendations, we would have asked. But we didn't ask, because we didn't want anything else. We don't appreciate being pushed to order more food. Most likely because we didn't order any drinks and additional starters, the waiter ignored us the rest of the time while we were there. He walked around the restaurant like a teacher monitoring students taking exams, to ensure that no one is cheating. He stopped by the table next to us twice to ask how things were but he never checked on us and never said anything to us during the rest of our time there. In terms of the food, it was edible. Perhaps they just cook the food in a different style but the chicken tikka masala, a staple in Indian cuisine, tasted too sweet. We have eaten tons of chicken tikka masala in the past and in India itself, so we have a pretty good idea of how it should take. Basically, would recommend people to avoid this restaurant. There's another Indian restaurant in Portree by the free parking lot. Perhaps try that one instead. read more
