    "Chicken tikka masala" and rice

Absolutely disgusting. DO NOT eat here. This was the worst meal I have ever had in my life. Terrible customer service, neon colored rice and tikka masala, old produce, the list goes on and on...I would give this place 0 stars if i

While visiting Fort William, I didn't see the actual fort but I did find some really awesome Indian food. Our little group had the entire place to ourselves. I ordered some garlic naan and the Balti chicken tikka. I know, I said I was tired of chicken by now but it's Indian food. The service was a little slow so we ordered drinks. I ordered a Disaronno and some still water. I should have asked for tap but ended up paying for a bottle of still. No matter. The food arrive shortly after and it was delicious. After days of having somewhat bland English/Scottish fare, I was finally able to have something spicy. You can tell that each of the items were made to order, which was reassuring. I loved the balti chicken tikka which is cooked and served in a balti bowl. If you don't know what Balti style is, see here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Balti_%28food%29 Apparently it is a UK thing. Prices were reasonable. The bathrooms have zero heat in them. It feels like you're in an icebox and that's not a good thing. We were seated in the back room with a gorgeous view of the water.

Place is nice but EXTREMELY busy with not enough staff. If you looking for Indian food then go here cause it's the only Indian Resturant in Fort William, Scotland. Haha. To be fair the food is good with lots of options of traditional Indian dishes. They just need more staff for dinner and I'll will try them again next year!

great meal after a long walk through the west highland way. this is better than anything you can find on the walk. food was flavorful. you could taste the different spices, textures and meats. Nann was light and crisped, not chewy and thick. I liked their biryani as the sauce has a lil kick to it. the food wasnt a glob of flavor of lesser indian places. they also had some more rare hot dishes that most indian places do not carry and it is in the middle of Fort William, and not London. service was attentive and the servers chit chatted with us. queue was fairly long as we had to wait 45 mins for a table for a sunday night. its ok, we just walked down the street for some cheap round drinks and came back and our table was ready.

Excellent chicken aam achari(left) and lamb roghan ghosh with buttery garlic rice.

Meh at best. Clean place, decent service. Severely lacking in flavor on 2 of the 3 dishes. Rice lacked flavor, naan was below average.

Ownership likely knows this, which is why I suspect they care very little about customer service or reputation. Like many of the reviews here, we found the gentleman manning the front to be a bit rude and curt, but they were pretty busy, which I suppose half-explains why we were told that our take-out order would require a whopping hour to prepare. Oh well *shrug*. A casual Indian restaurant with good service is a rare commodity in most places, and I say that on good authority because I'm Indian by heritage. Regardless, if you can tolerate some weird interactions, the food is genuinely quite tasty. I was honestly surprised. While I'm writing this several months after our UK trip and the details escape me, I know we ordered the chicken tikka masala (a must in Scotland, since it was invented in Glasgow!), a goat curry, paneer preparation, and a smattering of vegetarian items. Everything was rich, oily, fragrant, and spicy. It was just the type of rip-sticking fare you need after a long day of hiking.

People look at you like you owe them money ! *The old man who took our order made a disgusting face when we started ordering vegetarian food. Made it look like we asked for something inedible. *The aloo gobi was under cooked (was very raw). The jeera in jeera rice was burnt. We ordered vegetable jalfrezi and they served us chicken. When we reconfirmed with the server he said "this is vegetable jalfrezi madam" I told him to check it as we could clearly see pieces of chicken in it. He hurried back to the kitchen and got us the vegetarian uncooked ones . The only vegetables in it were bell peppers, onion and potatoes. Not fair ! * Even after telling them that we will be paying by card, they kept asking us if we would pay in cash. Not worth it ! Don't waste your money.

The menu is pretty cool, with a few items on it that I hadn't seen before. I was feeling curious and, after we'd ordered some papadums with spicde onions and dips, I opted for a Moghul honey with lamb while my partner went for the lamb Shyheti Balti and we got rice and a Peshwari naan to share. His was the better dish, mine would have been better with chicken and while it was delicious it was sweeter and milder than I'd normally choose. Still, I enjoyed it very much and I'm sure the rest of the menu is great too. We took our time over the meal and the staff didn't rush us. It was a nice, warm place to sit for a couple of hours and I'd definitely come back again in the future. I noticed on our way out that they do also offer take away food and that it's 10% off the main menu, so that's probably worth trying at some point too.

Not once did he come by to see how we were doing. We ordered the chicken tikka masala. It's ala cart so you have to order rice separately and you have to order naan separately, etc. the dish came out and it looked good but they were stingy with the amount of chicken. It gets worse, I took a bite and it tasted like someone dumped a bag of sugar in it . Tikka masala should never ever be this sweet. This tasted like some kind of dessert. I wanted to spit it out but we were hungry so we ate it begrudgingly. I've had this dish many times around the world and this was by far the worst version. The sugar drowned out all the spices. The only saving grace was the tandoor chicken itself was tender and delicious. The garlic naan itself was fine, and it was pretty big. Glad we only got one. I honestly can't recommend this place based on my experience.

And the fried appetizer - crispy, spiced, and a little addictive; might have stolen the show. Service was warm and efficient, and the whole experience felt relaxed but attentive. One thing we did not realize about Portree is that not only do many restaurants close early, but even the ones open require booking in advance, and walk-ins are not usually an option. Taste of India was open, and upon walking in almost every table was available. We were seated immediately. We did not order any drinks. For food, we ordered the Vegetable Jalfrezi, Paneer Butter Masala, and Garlic Naan. The food itself was overall strictly OK, with the three items scoring differently. The Vegetable Jalfrezi was very oily and overly spicy without any discernible savory flavor (poor). The Paneer Butter Masala was decent, though some more spice and less butter (it felt overly buttery) would've been appreciated (overall OK dish). The naan, however, was actually very good -- it was perfectly fluffy and hot when it came out, and was far better than we expected (good). The service was overall OK. Our order was taken promptly and the food arrived quickly. At one point a server dropped a knife onto my foot while clearing dishes on a nearby table and did not attempt to apologize at all or acknowledge the situation, which was very off-putting. We were hesitant to dine here given prior reviews I'd seen on TripAdvisor and other platforms, but our experience was OK and nothing more. If you're in a bind for dinner, this will get the job done, but I would not recommend it.
