Sunday 11/12/2023 I knew about this place for years and heard a lot of good things about it but never went until today. I made a takeout order and got an a la carte chile roast beef taco $2.69, sweet pork barbacoa burrito $12.59, and a pollo asado quesadilla $13.59. The chile roast beef taco was solid and I luckily got a second taco for free. The Chile roast beef was nice and tender. The sweet pork barbacoa burrito (melted cheese on top) was pretty good but also pretty messy when handling it. The sweet pork barbacoa was sweet and flavorful (probably my favorite protein from them). The pollo asado quesadilla was disappointing and that was mainly due to the pollo asado not being good and that sucks cause I had to pay an up charge for that specific meat. Cafe Rio was a pleasant surprise that I'm glad I finally tried after hearing about it for all these years. I wouldn't say it's better than chipotle but it's not too far behind. read more

Came in and saw the poster of the handheld burrito. I ordered that but it was plated in the tin pan vs the paper wrap in the poster. I asked the lady if she was going to wrap it and she said yea and didn't do it. Went to pick my "burrito" up and it completely fell apart. Terrible all around. Stay Far Away from this place right now! I always loved Cafe Rio UNTIL I became sick with food poisoning recently. Stomach cramps, diarrhea, within hours of consumption (and this was the only food I had in over a 24 hour period), temperature developed on the second day, then severe headaches for the following two days. I had to call seven different phone numbers WHILE ILL just to find a live person to report food poisoning. I also filled out the complaint form the same day and no one reached out. Since food safety is no longer a priority with this current administration, I received the most absurd email from Customer Care stating that because no one else reported food poisoning, my complaint was Closed and they offer me credit towards more POISON INFESTED FOOD. I still have some lingering effects 6 days later. read more

On each visit, including today, an associate greets me within 20 seconds when I stand at the pick-up register. The food was well prepared and packaged. I don't know what happened to this place. This location used to be really good fresh food, happy staff, and orders always on point. I sincerely enjoy Cafe Rio's food. I will just have to stop coming to this germantown location. No matter what terrible service or the order is constantly messed up if ordered online for pickup. Even if you go in at 7:00pm the staff is so worried about closing that they won't restock certain food or vending machines will be completely off. I will have to stop coming here for the disappointment no matter how good the food is when it's done right. read more

I placed a delivery order to celebrate the first day of summer. Overall I'd say it was okay. I ordered: ...2 entreés: a chicken elotes bowl and 2 enchiladas (pork and cheese) ...chips & guacamole ...2 drinks: a mangonada and a horchata ...1 dessert: tres leches with strawberries & whipped cream and ...2 sides: fire grilled steak and hatch green chile sauce. I honestly can't say for sure how much of my order I received. Each entreé was visually a hot mess--figuratively though, I'll elaborate later on. There was a flurry of "possibly identifiable" sauces on the side, most of which were in tiny containers, including a red chile sauce, which had a big random clump of avocado swimming in it (at least I hope it was avocado). I do know for sure that they forgot the dessert, and gave me a second bag of tortilla chips instead. That right there got me...I'll never have a positive attitude towards a restaurant that doesn't give me the food I paid for. First off was were the entreés. They were actually fairly good. They were both slightly warm and sloppily thrown together in such a way that each bite was a surprise. But they were good--comparable to Chipotles. Make of that what you will. It gave me the option to include flour tortillas, which I opted for. I was hoping for 3 or 4 fresh-out-of-the-oven-hot burrito-sized tortillas. Instead I got one chewy room temperature 6-inch tortilla. Still, i used it for my side of steak and green sauce and despite the tortilla falling apart, I really enjoyed my makeshift creation. In most Mexican restaurants I've been to, they give you a basket of tortilla chips & salsa free...like with ice water or bread in other restaurants. With this one they charged...substantially. They were real restaurant tortilla chips (not doritos or something), and were enjoyable after I popped them in the microwave for a bit, but still, it seemed tacky to charge. I did get a nice amount of guacamole though (at least I think it was guacamole. It could been the avocado salsa that ordered for another dish. I'm not sure what ever happened to that) The horchata was horchata. Honestly I've never drunken a bad cup of horchata. I think it's impossible to ruin. The mangonada wasn't a refreshment--it was a literal test of endurance. Of everything I ordered, this drink was the ONLY item that was even remotely spicy. AND BOY WAS IT SPICY!! Imagine a cup full of tabasco sauce. That's EXACTLY what it tasted like! I didn't taste anything mangoey at all, just pure tabasco. It took me 3 DAYS to finish that drink. It's a good substitute for caffeine if you need an afternoon pick-me-up. I did like that both drinks came in generously sized cups though. The tres leches is...still on vacation...i hope someday to get a postcard. They did give me a refund for it though, which, I guess in theory is enough to satisfy a holiday sweet tooth. One thing I liked overall was that each item was very customizable. So many options! That said though, I was really bugged by two things: 1) This was clearly food-court food at michelin star prices. The value really just wasn't there (except for the drink volume)--either in quantity or quality. The prices of the entreés themselves were a little high themselves, but where they really get your are the extras. Every little thing costs...and too much for what its worth. If I wanted to get ripped off like that, I would've ordered something from a Bethesda restaurant. But at least they have more convincing pretense. The entire meal came to a subtotal of $88.98. 2) The other thing that bugged me was getting food poisoning. Although that may have been a reaction to whatever was in that mangonada. I'll spare you the details. But it suffices to say that food poisoning is never pleasant. In summary, it was shoddy, overpriced food, sloppily-assembled that made me sick. i started this review at 3 stars, and wanted to reduce it to 1 star, but the not-free chips were good and the entreés tasted okay enough to be edible. So 2 stars seems fair. P.S. Tres Leches, if you're reading this, I hope you're doing okay in whatever distant land where missing food ends up! Love you! read more

This is my absolute last visit to this restaurant. From staff not opening on time, to not wearing masks properly to.... Wait for it... ... Intentionally coughing over customer's food. During a pandemic. I came in to order my food. Guy in front of me has no mask on. I keep my distance. Spray me a little Lysol in front of me. Wait. Get to the register and spray a little more (not all over the place, just in front of me where dude is standing). I'm about to check out and this chick behind the register tells me I can't spray. I tell her that I'm trying not to get sick because the guy in front of me didn't have a mask, but as I start to put my spray away, this chick does exaggerated cough over my food. Very disappointed with this location, I like the chain but this location is just bad. Food and service needs major improvement. 7ish pm. Service was ridiculously slow. I got enchiladas to go, since the dining area wasn't very clean. The employees seemed exhausted and possibly understaffed. Regardless whether it's 11am or a minute before closing food should be hot and fresh. Not sloppy leftovers I got a drink as well. Their signature drinks are usually good, but majority were almost empty. Scanner wasn't working for points so you had to scan your receipt later. When I got my food, my food was COLD. Rice and beans not even heated. Enchiladas were cold despite they cook it briefly on their stove. Their cilantro needs to be chopped better. Restaurant needs a better make over. After this disastrous experience, I'm done with this location. Maybe they should take notes from Rockville location. Tbh, Chipotle would be a better option. Avoid this location. After, seeing the generic response from the manager, I doubt things will change. read more

Such a disappointment! I don't have anything positive to say about this place. My daughter and I visited during COVID, we were super hungry and just wanted something quick. I remember trying Cafe Rio years ago, and remembered a tasty quesadilla, but that had to be a fluke experience. During my most recent visit, there were maybe two other patrons. The lack of care while preparing my daughter's burrito was maddening. Yes, maddening! The preparer just plopped the different food options on the tortilla without a care in the world. So, when it came time to eat the burrito, the entire thing fell apart. My mini was upset, but hungry, so she ate it with a fork since everything fell apart. The ingredients or taste of the food are absolutely nothing to write home about. The poor customer service and care free attitude are definitive stamps that I will not patronize this establishment again. read more

I was left with no lunch thanks to Cafe Rio and DoorDash. I placed the order through cafe Rio app for delivery, for starters it took forever to cafe Rio to prepare the order, I kept tracking it and for a long time it was saying "preparing your order " I texted the delivery person to please ask them to make sure they did not forget my chips and guacamole as THEY MISSED IT last time I ordered. I got no response from him I even asked if it was almost ready because it was taking forever and he never replied. When I got the order delivered to my office it was the wrong order! I tried to get to the person but he left so I called him and said this was not my order and has the WRONG NAME IN THE RECEIPT. He just said "that's what they gave me" that is not an excuse. As a delivery person you have to check and confirm the order you're taking! So this is on Cafe Rio and the guy both failed to check and confirm what they were doing! I am so upset I couldn't even eat the wrong order I got because it was all pork and I do not eat pork so it is very upsetting how everyone messed it up. I've been to this Cafe Rio twice. The first had more drama with the people I was with, but the second was more negative impression of the restaurant experience. So, if you are more interested in the negative experience with the restaurant I had, please skip to 'No Germantown & Monday, June 18, 2018' section. ---- Saturday, January 13, 2018: Once on a double date with my girlfriend (now ex) & her best friend & husband on Saturday, January 13, 2018. I had a pretty positive impression of the food (although I had been once before in Seven Corners, VA). I had gotten the Saturday special for the Shrimp Tacos, which was a real treat. My g/f & I were upset with her two friends because they acted as if they were already there. My g/f's best friend left a voicemail expressing how hungry they were and wondering when we would get there. But this was simply an effort to get my g/f to be only kind of late (as opposed to very late). We arrived not that far off from the agreed meeting time, and we had to wait an additional 20-30 minutes for them! My g/f talked to her best friend in private in the women's room because she couldn't go on with the meal without letting her know how she felt. I was completely on my g/f's side with her handling of the situation. The husband was so hungry and was complaining about them taking too long. He got the massive burrito and ate it in like 3 minutes without talking to us. He made the point that he was so hungry that he scarfed it down. ----- No Germantown & Monday, June 18, 2018: My g/f & I had broken up on 4/19. I did not want to visit Germantown at all (to not revisit memories both good & bad plus it was generally way out of my way anyway; I had no reason to visit). However, I knew that I probably would visit my friend for a party he was having on Saturday, 6/16 (Day 58) and would break my no Germantown streak. On Monday, June 18, that same friend who was hosting the party on Saturday was having a movie night. I decided to make the drive back to Germantown since I had already broken that streak and was pretty much over her anyway. I have not been to any of Germantown west of 270 since the breakup, where there were far more memories. My friend lives close to 355. ---- In spite of having the memory of our January 13th date (since enough time passed), I was not sad or depressed about being at the Cafe Rio and in fact, I was excited to be having a good Mexican meal. I called to find out what their Monday special was since I was on the road, and she told me the enchiladas. I wasn't sure if I wanted that much food. I went in, and the specials are listed, but there are no details on what specifically they are or the price and directed me to the website. I looked up Cafe Rio on my phone. I realized that I could get just one enchilada with rice & beans for $5.49 instead of stuffing myself with two for $7.49. The one was still pretty filling. They made the enchilada, and I'm thinking about where the rice & beans were. The enchilada sat there for a good 3 minutes, and they finally came to ask about the rice & beans. I paid at the cashier, but it took too long. At most assembly line places like Chipotle, they are more organized ready to go. The enchilada & all the food was quite good. My biggest complaint was not the lack of organization or slowness, but it was hot in there. Their A/C wasn't working or they were choosing to not use it. It was 90+ outside with a heat index near 100. This definitely had a negative effect on my Yelp review. Any restaurant that doesn't have their A/C working where it is noticeably hot in there, I will give a negative review. read more

Taco Tuesday is the bomb here. Make sure to get the entree instead of just the tacos because the entrees include rice and beans and a drink. It's the best value for your money. Additionally, if you have a little, little one at home don't forget to order the Nino quesadilla because it is free. Service is so-so. Sometimes the cashier knows about the special mentioned above, sometimes they don't. Look at your receipt to ensure that you are not charged extra for the drinks and the rice and beans As to the food, for a fast food Tex-Mex joint it's not bad at all. It's actually really fresh and delicious. Somehow, even though it's Tex-Mex, it does not feel heavy. It maybe due to the fact that I always load my tacos with all the fresh veggies like cilantro, lettuce, and salsa. The restaurant is clean and very colorful. It's a good place to eat with friends and lots of families come here. There's outdoor seating as well. Food is good, especially the sweet pork!!!! Get the sweet pork. Sweet pork anything!!! It's SUPER juicy, sweet, and savory. I think it's the best meat there. Standing in line, you can see the workers make the tortillas and cook your food, which is nice. Sweet pork quesadilla: Of course, super juicy! Plenty of cheese too, but mostly the pork! Any taco: The tacos are soft flour tortillas and are FILLED. It's very difficult to eat them, especially since the meats are juicy. Juice will drip down your hand, and it can get very messy. Comes with rice and beans. Overall the food is good and flavorful. Can't stress enough, GET THE SWEET PORK!! Very filling and fattening. Worst service I can remember. The server was terrible and it got worse all the way through to the host, Angel. Had to ask for salsa then we're told it was extra. She seemed to have gotten upset and it went downhill from there. Throwing our condiments into the nacho bowl to not asking if we wanted anything else. When paying we were made to wait while the hostess took her time getting to us. Then didn't ask us if we wanted a drink, nor give us any napkins. We had to ask for those and utensils. Cannot remember such bad service from not one the whole serving line staff (of three). The nachos were good but the medium salsa (at extra cost) had zero flavor. Dear Cafe Rio, I am not a cow. Please chop your cilantro. Thank you. I mean, seriously...it's not a garnish, cilantro is there for flavor and the stalk is like chewing on dental floss. You cut up every other vegetable in my tin, why not the cilantro? It's not cute. It's annoying. A common frustration of mine is that they post some great looking specials, but when you order them, that's not how they make it. Here is what happens...you order the special, they put the appropriate protein in the container and then look at you. Nobody says what it normally comes with. You don't get the mango unless you know to ask for it. You don't get cilantro. You don't get the pico. If an item comes with a specialty sauce, they don't give it to you... Am I supposed to remember the recipe I glanced at on the way in? Give me the meal the franchise chefs designed. You want the Fajita bowl? It doesn't come like the sign unless you have read the entire description and ask for it that way. Overall, just very frustrating service. If your order involves any conversation other than the English words for the food in the bins, forget about it. It's a lost cause with over half of the employees here. There is a sign on the door saying not to worry about the line, it moves fast. It doesn't. Still way too much time with the first person in the order process. Every other assembly line food place has figured out how to keep the line moving. Not Cafe Rio. There is also no "single taco" kid's meal. They have kid quesadillas...the ingredients are the same. They would not let me order it as a taco instead of a quesadilla. I had to say, "okay, give me the kid's quesadilla, but don't cut it." WTF? If you eat here, my advice is to order online. read more

UPDATE 13 MAY 2019: The tres leches cake is so dry! It used to be my favorite dessert here because it was so sweet and moist but I got it today and it was so dry and crumbly. I'm very disappointed but my salad was still rantastic. Get the salad with sweet pork! That's by far my favorite thing here. Taco Tuesdays are also awesome when you get the sweet pork tacos. This is one of my favorite spots to eat in Montgomery County. Also, if you are military then your order is half off on Mondays! I like it...i like it alot! I went on Taco Tuesday... and I got a shredded chicken taco, sweet pork taco, and a fire grilled steak taco. Each meat was good, so your choice should really come down to your mood that day. I also got the chips/guacamole/salsa combo appetizer. Overall, everything was delicious. The meats were all seasoned well, and the unlimited toppings of pico de gallo, sour cream, cheese, and cilantro make the tacos so flavorful. I also love that tacos come on flour tortillas. So I tried Café Rio for the first time this past weekend with my cousins who raved about it being far better then chipotle. The menu is pretty extensive considering that offer enchalidas and a tosadas and depending on the day there are daily specials. I chose to get a tostada... although really I probably should've just gotten a salad because its basically the cheap persons salad. Your paying a dollar more for guacamole and they don't charge you extra for 2 dressings. I chose the sweet barbacoa for my meat..which was a bit too sweet. It was almost sugary... Okay I guess its in the name but really sweet meat is a bit weird. Flavor wise everything else was really fresh the pico de gallo was delicious and I like that they give you the option of cotija cheese. The two dressings were really good. The Creamy Tomatillo and Cilantro Lime Dressing were fresh and added an extra something together to the salad. One thing that I love about Cafe Rio is that they offer so many fresh lemonades and teas. Some were a bit on the sweet side but they were so refreshing that it didn't bother me too much. The Mint Limeade and the Southern Limeade were both delicious fresh and sweet. Overall Cafe Rio is good when you want something fast casual but with fresher flavors or you just want fresh mex on the go. But definitely a place I would return to especially since portion wise its alot more then you think. I just know next time not to order a tostada or the sweet barbacoa and instead to order another item. read more

It used to be great, then management changed, and the service plummeted-- getting progressively worse, with my last experience bringing me to literal tears in the restaurant. The person preparing my food rolled her eyes at me, huffed, sighed, and was extremely condescending (saying "duh", "god!" and "obviously!") and impatient toward my disability. She ridiculed me for kindly requesting proper procedure (changing of gloves) to lower risk of cross contamination. The experience was dehumanizing and made me feel like a freak for a disability I have no control over. They need food/disability sensitivity training for their staff. This place is a really good alternative to Chipotle. They have fresh ingredients, a wide variety of bowls, tacos, burritos to choose from, and their meat is always tender and flavorful! I stopped by because my friend Julio is always raving about it and after giving it a try, I'd say that it's pretty freakin good. They make the best queso dip!! This place is definitely casual and great for families as it has open seating. The line can be long because it's made to order. All the seats and tables are paint splashed...so it's hard to see if it's dirty. This location is in a shopping center next to a big liquor store, so it gets really busy. There are a few spots next to a bank that people usually walk across the street. Today was Friday and they have different specialties, I ordered the salmon and steak tacos. The first station as your waiting in line to order is the dough making station. They make their own fresh tortillas. They are very thick and very filling. They ask you what you want on your order and they melt your order on a grill top behind. It was really slow service today because they looked short staff so everything was messy. It's just like chipotle where you choose your toppings and they have a couple of different sauces to add. I have to order their queso and salsa verde. They will nickel and dime you for extra quac and sauces, so just be careful. The person ringing you up always gets confused and sometimes throws someone's item in your bag. Just keep a lookout that you receive everything that you order. They have a specialty drink bar area. I always get their mint lemonade....it's delicious!! I always end up spending around $30 for dinner but I can finish everything. read more

The place is another of the fast food Mexican style chains. It, however, gets a star because there is parking a plenty where its located. The food is good, the salsa is average. Like most of the fast food Mexican places, they give you the tiny cup to get the salsa. Chips are endless but you to dip your chips in the tiny cup. I hate that! Overall a good alternative to the other fast food Mexican places, and when the weather is nice (read not in November) they have a wonderful outdoor seating area. The team was friendly, the restaurant was clean and overall a good experience.
