I recently stopped back into La Gula Mexicana after not visiting for a while, and I'm happy to say it's just as good as I remembered. This used to be one of my regular go-to spots, especially when I was craving a fresh veggie burrito, and this visit reminded me exactly why I loved it. I ordered my usual veggie burrito with extra cilantro, guacamole, white onions, and a little corn, and it was absolutely delicious. Cute place in Germantown. Walked in right before the dinner rush, which was convenient. Originally I sat outside, but the sun started beaming down in the section I was at so went inside instead. Ordered the trio dip and the birria tacos with consome combo. I enjoyed the nachos with the three different dips, but specifically enjoyed the thick cheese and guacamole. The birria tacos were extremely delicious with the consome being meaty, which was wonderful. Only downside to the visit was that it took about 20-30 minutes for the food to come out. I was literally told "get it yourself" I've been dining here since they've opened and usually love it! However, when the young woman brought my food she just set it down without saying anything, like she's dropping off mail in a box or something... They usually ask if you want anything, sauces, cutlery, etc... So when she came back around I asked if I could have a fork and knife and she grimaced at me and said "you can get it yourself behind the counter"... I reminded her there is a tip selection on check out, and she said " yes I know, I'll get you your fork, but I'm just letting you know that when you check out, you can go back there and get it yourself "with even more attitude. the chefs know what they're doing. the birrias are so good and addictive. at the register however, they can be slow and unorganized. someone gave me someone else's order after reading my receipt on the table. sometimes it takes 5 minutes, other times it takes a while to get my order. i understand restaurants can get busy, but the quickest my order was done was the busiest i've seen the restaurant, whereas when there's not too many people it can take a while. also they give you a number to bring to your table and i've had 2 servers forget to take it lol the restaurant has an outside section which i like. i wish the food was bad because then i would just never come here, but the food is so good that even though the service is not the best i still like eating here from time to time read more

The location is well maintained. Upon entering there is a bar to the right. There is a general seating area, and even outside seating. I made way to the counter to place an order. I asked for recommendations for the different taco options. I went with one Ribeye and one Al Pastor, to go. I will be returning to dine at the location. Both the Ribeye and Al Pastor meats were well prepared and seasoned. The portion size was generous. Several condiments were included. The hot sauce is very hot by the way. I don't enjoy leaving a bad review here. I have been going to the sister restaurant, Taco Bar, for years and that place has been my go to for cheap and good burritos. The food here is usually good but I had an insanely gross experience. When I got home, there was a big fingernail in my nachos that I bit into. Needless to say I wanted to puke after seeing it. This is a great local Mexican spot in Germantown. I highly recommend if you're looking for authentic Mexican food. When I went we sat at the bar and the bartender was really nice and attentive. If you sit at a regular table you order at the counter and the give you a number and then bring you the food. We had ordered the chip trio dip and wow the chips came out HOT and ready to eat, they were crunchy and sooo good! the dips were really good too! I shared the tacos chicken dorados witch were also crunchy and delicious. And I also shared some tacos birria with consume! This was the bite of the night! It was loaded with meat and hot with cheese and it comes with onions and cilantro on the side. Everything was very filling! For drinks I got the hibiscus cocktail. This was so good and light! Wow this place is sooo good! I went here with a friend for dinner and we fell in love with the tacos. I ordered 3 tacos: Birria, fried fish (pescado frito), and beef rib (suadero). Everything was super flavorful. The fish taco was fried to perfection. The beef was tender. The Birria was my favorite! I also like the portion of the tacos. They did not skimp out on the meat. Also highly recommend getting the esquites for a side and horchata for a drink. I like how they have both indoor and outdoor seating. I will definitely come here for Happy Hour next time. read more

I got a mix of new items and items I enjoyed last time to get a better feel for the restaurant experience. I spent $43.71 through online ordering from Toast and got the birria pizza $17, frachos $10, plantain hush puppies $6.75, the taco: pescado frito (fried fish) $3.75, and the taco: el camaron (shrimp) $3.75. - This was my first time experiencing a birria pizza, and it wasn't quite as good as the birria taco with consome experience I had previously had. It was solid and different from what I had expected. When I first came across Birria pizzas online, I would best describe it as 2 tortillas with the ingredients layered, but this one was more of a straight-up pizza, AND not having any consome with it was a missed opportunity. - The frachos were alright, and luckily you get a lot of food for the price you pay. The fries themselves are pretty weak as they weren't seasoned or crispy. - The plantain hush puppies were a huge favorite of mine last visit and they're still good as usual. - The fried fish and shrimp tacos were solid, but the corn tortillas hindered the experience (I prefer flour tortillas). We went for breakfast on a Wednesday around 8:45 and there was only one other person there so not crowded at all. Restaurant was sparkling clean and service was quick and pleasant. We got 2 breakfast platters which have egg of your choice with meat (one had chorizo, the other had shredded beef), awesome dipping sauces, refried beans, generous portion of well-topped chilaquiles, and a slab of seared cheese. It was all terrific, very filling and a great value ($12/platter). The only negative was that it took 10-15 mins for our food to come out when there was no one else waiting for food. The inside is cute and has great natural lighting. The food was so good. It came out hot and flavorful. The tacos had a generous amount of carne, when you took a bite some spills out. Exactly how a taco should be. The consume was good. We just needed one to share for all the tacos. The carne tacos hit, no notes. I love that they put the tubes of sauce on the table. Not pictured but so good. The salsa verde is not spicy but the perfect amount of flavor. The yellow sauce might be spicy to some but it's also so flavorful and perfect on your food. I enjoyed my time here. It had an industrial vibe to it, but it turned out to be a good solid place with a great staff. Everyone here is very nice. You order at the counter and you get a letter and they bring the food to you when it is ready. They bring it immediately because most of the dishes are fried or quickly made to order and it is hot. The plantain appetizer was still steaming hot for like 20 minutes after they set it on the table. Chips and guacamole arrived almost instantly and the pizza came later. For $17, we thought the pizza was worth it. They did not skimp on the ingredients as it was top heavy. I recommend having a fork ready to hold the pizza (one hand on the crust and the fork to hold the center). Since it is heavy, the toppings can just slide off. After the meal, I felt like I had some street tacos. It felt good in this cold climate. We typically go to a food truck nearby but we wanted to try something different and the food truck was way too cold to be waiting outdoors for our order. The set up in the restaurant is cute and a little small but big enough for larger parties. On the right hand side there's a small bar and you walk forward and order and then give you a letter and they bring the food out to you. We had a pretty large party about 12 people and we were able to rearrange the tables to have all of us fit. There is a huge patio area That is nice, but it was too cold to go. We ordered a lot of food. The birria tacos is what people have raved about and they were right, they were fantastic. The meat was super tender and very good portion of meat, usually in other places I have to ask for double meat, but this was pretty good. Flavor, tenderness, everything was 5/5! I had also gotten their wings, mango habanero, and the wings overall were good. I did feel like it could use more habanero flavor, ie more spice, but good crunch and moist. 3.5/5 The chips, guacamole, queso, salsa appetizer was okay, 3/5, the queso is a bit thick and clumpy probably not my favorite. Overall, pretty average. The ribeye taco overall was good! 3/5 The meat was tender and tasty! The only downside is a piece of cartilage/bone or something that wasn't pleasant. In the family of Ixtapalapa and Taco Bar, La Gula is my favorite of the three to sit and stay a while! Most unique between the three is La Gula's offering of Tortas and Pizza. If you're looking for something other than tacos this is your spot. If you consider yourself a taco connoisseur and you like finding the best birria and consome then look no further. Personally, this is my favorite spot for birria. But the suadero, ribeye, and bistec trail closely behind. Truly though, there is a taco and food item for everyone. Honestly blown away by this restaurant. I was just walking by when I saw this restaurant and walked in not expecting much, but I am so happy I decided to eat here. I ordered the nachos and the burrito and their prices are insane for the food you are getting. I have paid almost double for the same food that was no where near as good as this restaurants. The burrito was packed with flavor and the tortilla they used was super soft and stretchy. The nachos were also just as amazing. They made the chips with homemade tortillas and every chip was layered with everything. Not a single bite was just chips. The price and the quality of the food is not matching up and I am all for it. I did want to gatekeep this place from everyone else because it was so good and I dont want it getting busy. But people deserve to know how good this place is. The only complaint I have with the place is that the water cups are really small and I needed to refill it at least 3 times. What we tried: -Birria Pizza - Pizza with tender and flavorful birria, salsa verde, onion, and cilantro. This one is a must! -Torta Milenasa- Breaded beef, lettuce, tomato, pickled jalapenos, and avocado stuffed between nicely toasted bread that's spread with mayo ans refried beans. Well, as someone who is very particular with Mexican food (I love Taco Bell!!), this first experience here did not disappoint. Btw...I was kidding about Taco Bell . I ordered 2 birria tacos, one chicken, one steak, and esquite (Mexican Corn with all the fixins, but in a bowl not on the cob). The birria tacos were legit, they were actually made out of goat meat but were not gamy at all, very delicious and served with the broth which was also delish. The steak and chicken were just as good. Very good seasoning on the meats. The esquite was just as good too . Prices were very responsable with the amount of meat you get per taco (you can honestly make 2 out of one). I'm really a big fan of this place! I come pretty often with family and I feel that you can't go wrong with any of their taco options. My go-to's are definitely their shrimp and the fish tacos. I like that they offer either a fried option or a grilled option for the fish. I will say I prefer the fried though! It comes out on a tray with a generous pile of onions, cilantro and limes. 3 tacos is incredibly filling especially since each taco comes with two tortillas. I usually split the original taco into two to make it a little more manageable when eating since they're so generous with the filling!
