I use to live in the city and ate at Cafe Rios there. The amount of food you get in the city is more in line with their prices than this location. I ordered nachos, in the city there's enough chips to be seen over the edge of the container, here there is much less. Then when they put on the meat it was a small amount so I asked for more, which I was charged $3.29 for. Then they put the cheese on and it was sparse. I asked why there was so little since it was nachos and cheese is a big part of nachos. She said it was how the manager instructed them to do it. These nachos cost $16.77 plus tax. It's pitiful. ***Update*** It's been three months since I posted a review and the owner replied. I wish I could say this location has improved. I returned today and nothing has changed. The service is not good and most of the workers are very rude. The man with the bun is always so rude and tries to make your food way too fast and when he messes up he gets annoyed when you tell him it's wrong. He also barely puts meat and rice and beans. I am done with Cafe Rio for a while. They totally screwed up my order. When I went back to ask them to correct it they tried denying it. Luckily I had my phone with me to show her my order confirmation compared to the receipt on the bag ( she had to move her thumb to see that queso was on the order). I wanted to believe that this location would get better, but it's worsened. The location I would usually go to in SLC was honest in the quantities. Here? Their sweet pork quesadilla barely has any sweet pork on it. It doesn't even cover 2/3 of the quesadilla. We ordered taco salads with the birria meat last night. It was barely warm, there was maybe a teaspoon of rice and 12 beans, 5 of which were pinto even though I asked for both and a tablespoon of meat. It was like a full head of lettuce on a wet tortilla in there and so not worth the $13 charge. Plus, the guacamole wasn't present. I don't care if it's an order near 8:00 pm. We ate at Cafe Rio on the 4th of July. I was surprised they were open, but happy. It was triple points on fajitas day, so we decided to try those for the first time. We eat vegetarian, and they made them with just the peppers instead of meat. There was enough for two of us. It was still a little pricey for made to order food, at $12. We added the queso and chips - always a good choice! We had our dog with us and sat out on the patio, which was really nice. There are very few dog friendly places here in Vernal. read more

Similar to Chipotle This was literally one of the only places in town open for food on Sunday. Still, we weren't sorry that we stopped. There's a bit of a wait to take your order - its similar to Chipotle in food but also the way you line up and order, paying at the end. I tried their new brisket in a burrito and it was pretty good. They hand roll and make tortillas here too. The cashier accidently rang me up with an extra drink but correct the problem after I caught it and walked back to him. The dining room was open so we sat down to a good meal. My partner left her purse hanging on the back of the chair at the table and didn't realize it for nearly 20+ mins after we were back at the hotel so we jetted back there and found it still there. Pretty typical cafe rio. The rice was a little salty and the pork a little less sweet than normal. Overall if you're passing through and need a place to stay Cafe Rio is a safe bet you'll be satisfied. It's not authentic Mexican food but it is tasty Americanized burritos, salads, and quesadillas. read more

Their soup is one of the best foods that I have tried. You get to watch them make your food and it's very satisfying.

Authentic Mexican this is not. However, if you are looking for Americanized Mexican or Tex Mex, this place is pretty tasty! They can get expensive, $9 for a salad, but if you go on Tuesdays they have great $5 specials. Also, they (always) give free quesadillas to kids under 6, they let my kids each order 2. I recommend the pork barbacoa salad with black beans and creamy tomatillo dressing. Ask for your tortilla in the side or else they put it underneath and it gets soggy. It can be confusing if it's your first time, it's loud and sometimes hard to understand what they are asking you. On every dish you have your choice of meats and beans. The options are on the menu. They will ask if you want each item in your dish even if it is on the menu description (Cilantro? Tomatoes? Etc) Just be aware that cheese, guacamole, and sour cream cost extra. Their self serve drinks are pretty fantastic too. If you like soda, there are the standard options (coke, sprite, etc) with 9-12 Torani syrup options. I didn't grow up eating burritos. I discovered them rather late in life, and especially after moving to the west coast. I was pretty ignorant of regional differences - Tex Mex vs. Mexican, if San Diego makes them better than San Antonio - I still don't know. So, I travel to Utah for a job - the third time in a year, and each time staying a few weeks at a time; I've gotten pretty familiar with Cafe Rio Mexican Grill. I've developed an honest love for their vegetarian burrito with half and half beans, and habanero salsa without cheese. It's a comfortable mess of food that always, always satisfies. I don't know why they put the lettuce and pico de gallo outside of the burrito, serving it almost as an accompanying side, but I really don't care. I love this place, and every time I see one I hope I can stop in. I at least note it's location, because I'll probably be going back sometime really soon. read more

I am not one to write bad reviews, especially as a former waitress, but this really bothered me. We ordered food for 5 people online, got a confirmation email, and showed up about 15 minutes after they said the food would be ready to give them time to prepare it in case they were busy. However, when we got there, the people claimed they never received the order and told my coworker to go to the back of the long line to reorder. We were trying to quickly pick it up in between seeing patients, and didn't have time to wait, hence our ordering online. If I could give less than 1 star I would. Don't get me wrong, I love Cafe Rio. I go pretty frequently back in Layton, UT. But tonight I went to the one in Vernal, Utah. Worst. Experience. Ever. I honestly never thought it was possible to mess up a Quesadilla. Well, I have been proven wrong. The only thing involved in making a quesadilla is adding cheese and folding it in half. They didn't manage either of those. No joke. There was no cheese, and maybe about half an inch was "folded" over to make the quesadilla, all done with an old and anything but fresh tortilla. When I asked if they would just make a new one, I was told no. Long story short. Save your money. You'll get better food at the gas station down the street. read more

Dining options in Vernal are limited. The gentleman at the Marriott Springhill Suites suggested dinner here so we walked across the parking lot to check out the menu. We knew it had some chops will the police cruisers in the parking lot and a significant percentage of the local force inside having dinner! The set-up is like Moe's or Willies, you order and they prepare your meal as you watch. There are many meat options (chicken, beef, pork, veggie) and a variety of ways to order your meal: salad, burrito, enchilada, quesadillo - and they make the dish your way - as you watch. Including freshly made flour tortillas. We enjoyed the chicken taco salads on their patio. Large portions and very tasty. The Cafe Rio radio/music was a nice addition (boomer music). read more

To start with, this is not Mexican food. This is Tex-Mex. While they are similar, the styles are completely different. Being Tex-Mex, I should have known better than to order an enchilada. It was decent, but there was certainly nothing special about it. It was also DROWNED in sauce. Additionally, it doesn't help that the person behind the counter kept asking me "mild, medium, or spicy sauce" when the menu talks about tomatillo, red chile, and green chile sauce. The chile con queso was tasty, but a bit too sweet. The flour tortilla the spouse had with their quesadilla was wonderful. The guacamole was really good as well. We got take out from cafe rio and when we got home to eat lunch we found a screw in the enchiladas. We called them and they told us to bring it back and all they did was refund are money for the one meal. No compensation for our time and their mistake. This review is mostly about the service. Food is not bad, not as good as Chipotle or Qdoba, but ok. I'm hoping that the service I got was an outlier - maybe it was just a bad night. I went in at about 7:00 on a Wednesday. The place was pretty empty and no one was in line. I walked up to the counter where one employee was in the process of preparing some to-go orders. She completely ignored me as I was standing there, and all the other employees (there were about 5 or 6) just stood around. Finally, after patiently waiting for about 5 minutes, I asked if they were still serving or just making to-go orders. After this, she grudgingly, and slowly started filling out my order. Meanwhile, the other employees continued mostly standing around, except for the ones loudly and clearly complaining about their co-workers. The general attitude of the employees was surly and unenthused. Not sure if this was a bad night or if something had just happened, but it definitely did not make me want to go again. read more

Apparently it was voted #1 National Mexican Food Restaurant by someone... This is a fast growing chain of quick Mexican restaurants (see; chipotle, qdoba, moe's, etc). However, this one seems a little different. I enjoy the tortilla soup and fresh salsas. Plus, they have a great selection of hot sauces to choose from! The pork barbacoa and grilled steak/chicken tacos are also a good choice. They also make their tortillas fresh in front of you.
