More MSG than bad Chinese. We ate dinner here on Sunday, May 31st. Very large servings. Wife got Nachos appetizer as a meal, but it was so large it could make a meal for 4 hungry adults. I got the pork enchiladas. Food tasted great!!. It had a bright flavor - a giveaway of MSG. At 12:30 pm, i woke up and my heart was pounding at 95 bpm and i had headache. I slept fitfully - maybe 4 hours sleep that night. I have had MSG poisoning before but that was from Chinese.food. I should have picked up on the bright flavors in the food and pushed away. (MSG is used for a reason to wake up flavor.) If you are not bothered by MSG, then this is a great restaurant, but portions are enormous, gigantic. So maybe order one entree and split it for 2 adults. read more

Great food and good service. The waitstaff were patient with my young kids and kept the chips and salsa refilled. I was trying to manage my kids with getting out the door that I left my to go box sitting on the table. One of the kind wait staff came and flagged me down on the street to give me my leftovers. This gesture meant so much. The chips and salsa were over the top good. The salsa was spicy and had great flavor to it. My little boy, who does not like salsa, could not get enough of it . I had a ground beef enchilada with beans and rice. I would definitely order this again. My kids split a kids meal since they were a large size. There was more food than both of them could eat. The fries were hot and crispy while being soft in the middle. Our food was excellent. We will be back and probably order the same things. read more

What a great gem. This place was wonderful. The decor, super fun. The service was amazing. But the food! Warm, crisp, fresh chips with perfect salsa. Just enough heat then a wonderful cabbage salad. I got the vegetarian chimichangas and they did not disappoint and there was a LOT of food. The rice is so good I would have been happy and there was a lot! Chimichangas were full of veggies and the beans were so comforting. I had another whole meal to take home. Great food, great value and the staff made it such a treat. This is the first time at the restaurant. I'm surprised how large and shallow the plates were which makes the portions appear larger. Food is overpriced. Margaritas are overpriced. If you pay by credit card, they charge an administrative fee on top of a credit card processing fee. I feel they are chintzy in some ways. No liner in chip baskets, no napkins on table while eating chips, etc. These small things makes a difference especially for what they are charging for food. The ambiance is good. Service is good. We currently live in San Antonio, TX, where all of the Mexican food is what they call Tex-Mex. It's pretty bad for the most part. But, we were raised in El Paso, TX, where the Mexican food is totally different. Plaza Mexicana has the type of food we were raised on in El Paso. I was able to order red chile cheese enchiladas with eggs over easy just like I would if I were in El Paso. My better half ordered Chile relleños which were like we would get in El Paso. Prices are higher than the menus in Yelp pics, some seem reasonable but other dishes are very expensive. The kids menu price was ridiculous for what you get: kids nachos are a plate of chips and cheese for 11.99, no toppings or drink, and it came out a few minutes after the adults' dishes. My food was fine and a fair value (combination dish of chimichanga + enchilada), but my partner asked for green sauce on his beef enchilada but received a super strange red cream sauce. Server was pushy about ordering dessert. They had a big sign on the door stating "cash only", but were letting certain customers use cards. I understand swipe fees are high but I'd rather a business add a credit card surcharge then be deceptive. The tables are decorative and cool. Would not go back. read more

Salsa is okay, it has a kick to it. The chips do not compliment salsa- they have a kind of burnt flavor to them. The chips and salsa could be elevated if the chips were lighter. Tampaquiena: had good flavor but was drenched in the sauce. Crispy chili Relleno: it was disgusting! It was crispy it was mushy. I cut it in half took a bite and it was like warm. It was served covered in lettuce. I was so disappointed. I read the reviews of this place hoping for a good Mexican meal and was so let down. We have eaten here a couple of times. The first thing to note is that the prices are very expensive compared to other Mexican restaurants. The ambience is OK. We really liked the unique carving decor in the booths. You get a lot of food! But most dishes are about $10 more than you would spend elsewhere. Most of the dishes that we tried for very good but last time I had a taco salad and it was horrible. it was all watery and runny. Do NOT order the Taco salad! read more

So let's talk about Mexican food. Not every restaurant needs to look like a Mexican village on the inside. Also, more does not equal better. While it is a small place and was busy, the service was good, even if the atmosphere was a bit hectic. I had a 3 item combo and chose a chicken enchilada, a shredded beef taco, and a chili verde burrito. The rice and beans were legit and delicious. This is where any chance at excellence ended. The taco left a lot to be desired. The beef was so soaked in whatever they cooked it in, it practically destroyed the shell. Also, I don't care when a restaurant uses pre-made taco shells. This is the worst offense in my book. The enchilada was ok. The chicken was good, but it seemed as if the meat had just been boiled and then thrown in the sauce with the enchilada. It did not taste marinated or spiced at all. Same with the burrito. The pork in the chile verde did not taste marinated. The sauce was only ok. I didn't finish this item as I was getting full and it was my least favorite item. Overall, just meh. I've had much better and I've had much worse. I don't like how all the meats just seemed boiled then added to the items as opposed to being actually marinated or cooked with any spices. I won't be back. read more

A fun place that provides authentic Mexican food, along with a fun and colorful environment. The food comes in large portions so come hungry. If you're looking for a Coca-Cola they serve it bottled (the best kind). The service is impeccable. And everything from the seating to the lighting is hand painted or hand carved. The flavors are on point as well. The queso comes in a huge serving but know that it's a basic melted cheese and not much more in terms of flavor combination. We had chicken dishes and enjoyed the way the meat was prepped. They offer all different types of drink options, from a soda to a beer or nice glass of white wine. I was skeptical of the ratings. I didn't think a little town like Vernal could really have a knock-your-socks-off Mexican food restaurant... but I was pleasantly surprised. This is a tough call since I thought just the decor and xylophone music were off the charts adorable enough for 3 stars, the food a 1.75, service friendly, but despacio (slow) but we weren't in a hurry. My husband called the whole thing tacky kitch and he loathed his absolutely not authentic Mexican chicken enchiladas and shredded beef enchilada with red sauce. We accept the blame for substituting salad and fries for rice and beans. The salad and fries were, oddly, the highlight. The red sauce is out of a can or Bob's not my uncle. I had the shredded beef enchiladas since I like them, normally. These were slightly less than mediocre. Luckily, we had plenty of cash, since that is all they accept. Then we ask for extra lime with the HOUSE margarita... .NO...only house margarita. We were happy to pay extra but it was NO! Price..... outrageous for the food. Ohhh! This is a Mexican place that you should not miss when visiting the far flung town of Vernal, UT. We were only in town for one night while visiting the Dino National Park. I ordered the Camarones de la Placha and sweet wife ordered the Crispy Chili Rellenos. Both dishes were way, way beyond what we could have imagined. The shrimp and mushrooms sautés in a wonderfully flavored garlic sauce and they add a small cup of it for dipping. The down side was peeling the cooked shrimp. Even knowing this I would order it again. The crispy rellenos was fantastic also. Both plates were giant! The place was busy but that did not affect the excellent service. read more

Great Mexican flavor. Enchilada sauce is spicy and tasty. Shredded beef taco is flavorful in a red sauce. Rice is Med dry right consistency. Ice tea is fresh and clean taste.
