Woke up early to go to avoid the holiday rush, and in hindsight, it was a great move. It feels like a beautiful little Christmas card inside, with very charming decor. I ordered the Viennese breakfast, which came with a mini Sachertorte. Recommendation: come very hungry because the breakfast is huge. felt bad that I only ate about 70 percent of it. The sachertorte was okay. Honestly, it was not anything to rave about, as it felt like eating a Trinidad black fruitcake with fondant. Service was wonderful. The staff was very chatty and sweet.
Getting a Sacher torte from the OG Sacher hotel was definitely on my list of to do things in Vienna. I ended up getting the torte and a hot chocolate, which was nice after having to wait in the cold for hours to get in. We were seated in the front room which was really elegant with high ceilings and chandeliers, and spaced out so it felt roomy even though you could have fit twice the number of people in there. The torte itself was pretty good, the cake was light and airy but a bit dry without the cream. I personally love apricot jam and would want a bit more, but overall it was quite good. The hot chocolate was fine, but I liked the one at Demer better as it had a stronger chocolate taste. Service was good but a bit slow; there were several unbussed tables while we were there and nobody clearing/turning them over which you'd think they would want to do promptly since there were literally over 50 people waiting outside. I'm glad I went, and the experience was lovely, but I would probably not go again given the 1.5-2 hour wait. It's still worth the experience if you haven't done it before.
If you're already in Vienna, you might as well try the original, right? Café Sacher, the alleged birthplace of the famous Viennese Sacher-torte, is all about the experience. The cafe is part of Hotel Sacre, a historic luxury hotel with beautiful architecture. I already knew what to expect with the cake being dense, some even said a bit dry but I didn't notice that at all, so I was perfectly fine with it. It wasn't too sweet and made for a lovely afternoon treat. A violinist played in the dining room, adding a beautiful classical touch to the atmosphere. Service was slow, but we didn't mind. It actually made us slow down too and just enjoy the moment. Nothing particularly spectacular, but that's kind of the charm. Just savoring the Viennese pastime of lingering at a café, one slice of Sacher-torte at a time.
I know everyone says to try the Sachertorte while in Vienna, and by all means it's a touristy experience! It just left me underwhelmed, personally. My husband and I were visiting Vienna and this was definitely on our list. We walked by the cafe one afternoon and saw the line was out the door. We ended up coming back the next evening when there wasn't as much of a wait, maybe 5 minutes or so. The wait really did go by fast so that's a plus. The cafe itself is beautifully stunning with a relaxing atmosphere. The service was a little flighty, I think just because people are just ordering desserts and it's hard to keep up. The cake itself was nothing to write home about. It's definitely a touristy thing to try, but don't expect to be blown away. I wouldn't recommend this to be high up on my list of things to do in Vienna, especially if there's a long wait!
We were recommended Cafe Sacher for our visit to Vienna. We stopped by for am evening snack. We ordered the Torte and an Apple Strudel. The place has a beautiful elegant feel to it and can have a long line during busy meal hours. The torte was very rich and chocolately, great for any chocolate fanatic but it was a bit too much for me. I'm glad it came with some cream on the side which paired perfectly being that the cake itself is a bit on the dry side . This would be delicious with a glass of red wine or some coffee to wash it down. I think it's a bit over hyped for what it was. The apple strudel was better. The crust was soft and had a lot of apples along with some raisins (warning all those that do not like raisins). The raisins had a bit of a rum taste to them which I enjoyed. Light strudel but good. Service was ok, maybe too tired being that it was close to the end of the night or too busy trying to clear up the place to close.
A very famous spot in Vienna and a good one but after sampling cakes every afternoon during my visit in Vienna I didn't think this was better than the others. If you don't want to wait in line there are lots of alternatives. Service was attentive and pleasant and a lovely old school ambiance.
Cafe Sacher is one of those touristy cafes that you have to stop by once if you have never been. Yes, the majority of customers are tourists. Yes, there are lines to get in. Yes, the food portions are small. Yes, everything is over-priced for what you get. However, I like seeing the red classic cafe interior, as a reminder of what old-school dainty Viennese cafes were like. I see the price as an admission ticket. Tip: Make sure to be seated in one of the main rooms instead of the extended sunroom, which has minimal decor...and can get quite hot. I ordered a cappuccino and two desserts. Although the portion sizes were small and the sachertorte parfait was something ridiculous like €15 (to my gripe above), they had good flavors and I did enjoy them. I did not order their legendary sachertorte as it is dry (1 star off). Service was good and efficient. On a hot day, staff would even hand water out to customers waiting in line outside -- a very kind gesture!
We were so looking forward to an original Sacher torte. We thought it had more layers but did not. It had good flavor but was denser than expected. A slight let down. We also had the Sacher fudge cake. It was really dry. Drinks were good, but we hoped for so much more...
A MUST-try when going to Vienna, the birthplace of the Sacchetorte! Needless to day, this dessert, a chocolate cake with apricot jam filling, fudge ganache and crowned with a piece of chocolate. For such a seemingly rich dessert, it was shockingly light! Certainly smaller than desserts in the US with less sugar, too. I loved the cake, which was moist and dense. The apricot jam added a different note of sweetness to the whole dessert, the the ganache on top was just the crowning glory of the whole thing. I got it with an iced caffe, something else that you need to have when you're in Europe, which is coffee, vanilla ice cream, and whipped cream. The result is a heavenly coffee-cloud that cools and refreshes as well. The cafe is beautiful, reminding me of a castle, as so many of these elegant cafes do in Europe. The service staff are on point and never miss a beat as they go from guest to guest, giving you more than just dessert; you get a first-class experience!
We went to the Cafe Sacher this morning about 0930 as one of the places that we wanted to visit. We had about a 10 minute wait to get in, and that actually went pretty quick. We went for breakfast, and since they do not do reservations, getting a table was pretty quick. The inside is decorated in red for the most part. It looked like a fancy place compared to any cafe I've seen in the US. The prices were a little higher that the average place. For 2 breakfast and a dessert, we're talking over €50. When we left, the waitress line was about 25 feet out the door, so we must have hit it at just the right time. We had the omlete and scrambled eggs with bacon. We also had the orange juice, with and without a spritz. Actual fresh squeezed juice is so nice... Anyway, the food came out fairly quick and tasted good. Kinda hard to mess up scrambled eggs though... LOL. They do tend to cook them on the shorter side, so it may be a little softer and runnier than you're used to, but still good. We also got a Sacher Tort to eat later, so I can't review that just yet. Overall it was a very nice little breakfast.
The service was great, food and coffee delicious, and the decor amazing. Definitely recommend this hidden gem in Vienna, Austria.
(Overall: D) - Hotel Sacher is a very historic place with grandiose decor and a trademark dish of their own. Given this nature, there is unfortunately a wait for the hotel and the wait I found not worth to try a cake which I personally did not enjoy beyond the flavor. (Sachertorte: F) - As one of the historic dishes of Vienna, I definitely had to go out of my way to try this chocolate cake with apricot jam. Unfortunately, I found not only the concept to be historic but the actual cake itself as the presentation is dated to my disliking. I also found the cake to be lacking levity and could benefit from incorporation of more air and moisture. (Lemonade: C) - I was unpleasantly surprised by the backwardness of the lemon flavor in this lemonade as it was primarily soda water and the berry jam. came here to try the famous sacher-torte and thought it was just ok! Its definitely unique to other chocolate cakes with the apricot jam that is quite tasty and has a beautiful appearance, but I agree with other reviews that overall it just was a bit dry and fell somewhat short for me. I came on a weekday afternoon and was seated immediately, but if I had waited in the famous long lines for this expensive slice of sacher-torte I would have been a bit disappointed for sure. Service was very friendly and the inside of the cafe is stunning - I would recommend taking peak at the top floor for sure. The red carpets and chandeliers are very elegant and set the stage for a classy afternoon coffee and treat!

Came to Café Sacher expecting the famous Sacher-Torte to blow us away, but unfortunately, the cake was the weakest part of the experience. We ordered the Sacher-Torte, Café Melange, and a Radler. The Sacher-Torte was quite dry and, honestly, pretty mediocre. For something with such a legendary reputation, it just didn't live up to the hype for me. The coffee, however, was delicious and definitely the highlight of our visit. We didn't have a reservation, but since we went in the evening, we were seated in less than 10 minutes, which was a pleasant surprise. The ambience is beautiful and elegant, with the upstairs area feeling even fancier and more impressive. Would I come back? Probably for the ambience and coffee, but I wouldn't come here specifically for the Sacher-Torte. There are better desserts to seek out in Vienna. read more
During my visit to Vienna, I had the opportunity to dine at the renowned Hotel Sacher café. While the establishment's location and ambiance are undeniably captivating, the culinary offerings fell short of expectations. The original Sacher torte, despite its reputation, failed to impress, resembling a conventional chocolate cake rather than a distinctive Viennese delicacy. Additionally, we ordered an iced cappuccino, which arrived lukewarm, and felt like they took a warm cappuccino and added a few ice cubes, which were melting even before I took a sip. We came to try the famous Sachertorte and ended up upstairs dining level. Such a luxurious and old-charm cafe, cozy with chandeliers and rich red tone room. Staff is so attentive and engaging with recommendations. Though the chicken is a little dry, the presentation is stunning. The fish is absolutely delicious. I should have taken a picture of the dining menu since it's not even in their website. I'm not really sure the names of what we ordered This place is one of my unforgettable dining experience in Vienna. read more

Pretty cafe and busy in the morning. Pluses 1. Pretty place to sit Areas to improve 1. Sacher tarte disappointing, we arrived when they first opened and it was hard, like a biscuit, and dry 2. Omelet was average 3. Coffee drinks lacked flavor 4. The one waitress was overwhelmed and not very cheerful Interesting place to sit, but underwhelmed by the whole experience. read more

The cake was rich and delicate--sweet but not overly so and slightly tart. Highly recommended! Absolutely lives up to its reputation as the most authentic version. We heard from our tour guide that the legal dispute over who created the original Sacher torte was one of the longest legal cases in Vienna between Sacher and Cafe Demel - another very large and distinguished Cafe in Vienna. read more

very touristy but one of those "have to try if you're in the city" spots. i waited on a short line to get 4 slices to go for €42 which is a pretty penny for a slice of cake. honestly.... i don't get the hype. it was dry, not moist, and unmemorable. i went right when it opened at 8am and no one was there but the waitress seemed like she couldn't be bothered and was not friendly. read more

Was recommend be a friend of mine to try go here for the iconic sachertarte and a coffee and was unfortunately severely disappointed. The cake was extremely dry/crumbly and the overall flavor was lacking. I wouldn't say it is a 'must try' in comparison to the other Viennese food we tried on our trip. For such an 'iconic' dessert, I was expecting much more. I also ordered an Irish Coffee and it was almost undrinkable. It tasted like the espresso was burnt and the whiskey surly didn't help that. We went here after seeing an orchestra (around 9PM), so a huge plus was that there was no line when we were told there typically is. The ambiance inside is posh and adds to the experience positively. Lots of historical art work on the walls and the iconic red booths are a nice touch. read more
There's 2 kinds of people. The ones that will tell you it's not worth the wait and then me. I could not leave Vienna without trying the famous Sachertorte. There's a debate on who makes the best one but I decided to try it here since they actually claim to have been the birthplace of this iconic dessert. I was a little concerned that it would be too dry based on some reviews I read before but I actually thought the cake was pretty good. It will not change your life but having said that, I think it was well balanced and not overly sweet. Highly recommend pairing it with a melange coffee. The cafe is gorgeous. If you can sit on the second floor. I would definitely do the line again. read more

Was the original Sachertorte worth the wait? Perhaps. Admittedly the cake was a tad on the dry side, but the chocolate icing and apricot jam made up for the dryness. We wanted to order the Viennese spicy cake to share (vs getting two Sachertortes) but they were out! Everything came out pretty quickly. The staff has their act and routine down pat!! I got the Maria Theresia coffee and my spouse got a sparkling rose. The coffee was nice and not too overpowering on the orange liqueur. We got a sparkling mineral water to share. We can definitely say we've tried the world famous Sachertorte. However, I'm glad the line was short read more
They say Demel and Cafe Sacher have been at "war" over who has the best Sacher torte for decades. In my opinion, Demel wins that war with no contest. The torte here at Sacher was dry and the chocolate casing too thick. Demel was incredibly moist and flavorful and you could taste the fruitiness in a good way. Overall this place is more hype BUT their spiced ring cake was absolutely delicious! Hands down worth coming here for! read more
You must go to Sacher Café and you must try the Sacher-Torte. They get terrible reviews as being hard and chewy and too rich but the story behind them makes it worth it! Also, I kinda liked them so that's my personal 2 cents. In 1832, Prince Wenzel von Metternich needed to impress some guests but his pastry chef was sick. In walks in a 16 old apprentice chef to save the day. His creation, the Sacher-Torte, became so popular that it eventually led to the founding of the Hotel Sacher in Vienna. read more

When we arrived we were sat right away at the cafe because we opted to sit outside. We ordered their legendary Sacher Torte and coffee. The cake was good, not the best, it was a little dry. The coffee was delicious. Our waiter was ok, he didn't seem well trained on proper etiquette. I noticed a guest next to me didn't like what they ordered and the waiter asked the guest what they wanted to do about it, instead of offering the guest a compromise. As we paid our bill, I paid in cash and the waiter asked me what he should do with the money I gave him. I've never been asked that before, usually a waiter will give you back the change. I had to explain that to him. He was young and could definitely improve on his skills. If you're in Vienna the Sacher torte is a must try, but I wouldn't go out of my way to try one again. If you're here in the summer expect long wait times to sit inside. I recommend going later in the evening for a shorter wait. read more

The cafe is in the first floor of the hotel, it gives a traditional look to it We came in around 9p and there was still a line to try this famous Sacher Torte It was delicious and the chocolate gives a unique kind of flavor and texture! If you're in Vienna, it's a must stop cafe! read more

Is it a tourist trap? Yes. Was the sachertorte delicious? No, not particularly. Am I glad I tried it? Yes, yes I am. Would I go back? It wouldn't be at the top of my list, but I really am glad I tried it. The room was lovely, the service was friendly, the cake was fine, and I crossed one of the big tourist in Vienna to dos off my list. Cafe Sacher's sachertorte is unlikely to change your life, and probably won't be the most delicious thing you've ever eaten. But it was perfectly pleasant, if a little drier than I was expecting. If you keep your expectations in check, you can have a pretty nice experience here. For what it's worth, a couple of locals told me that the best sachertorte in Vienna can be found at the supermarket. I wouldn't be surprised if they were right. read more
