    03/18/22 Gugelhupf

Part of a twelve location chain Konditorei Oberlaa is found throughout Vienna, the combination Restaurant and Patisserie present since 1974 young in comparison to many of the city's storied Cafes and Coffeehouses. Drawing inspiration from France as evident in Éclair and Macaron but still serving all the usual Cakes and confections, guests dining in are required to order from the table rather than counter, and if also taking items to a separate check must be billed by a second server. Sticking to the script this morning, Gugelhupf drier than others and served without Almonds, Oberlaa's Sachertorte also features less moisture than Demel, Aida or "The Original" while Apfelstrudel arrives well-layered but unremarkable in terms of the Fruit inside.

If you want a good hearty breakfast, come here! Good start to our day, cafe was not crowded and staff was friendly and helpful. Portions was good, delicious and price was reasonable. Location was also at a convenient spot.

Gnocchi with pesto and small iceberg salad

I was looking for a Café/bakery to get some authentic Viennese strudel after a healthy meal. Although I was originally directed to the French cafe next doors (Le Bowl), I stopped in my tracks once I saw the Viennese bakery selection here (not to mention the outdoor seating for the perfect sunny day). The Food: The menu had a fantastic selection of salads, entrees and soups. The gnocchi with pesto sauce, which came with a nice little iceberg lettuce salad. After the heavy meals I'd been eating in Austria and Germany - where nothing comes with veggies or salad, I was in heaven to not have to remember to order salad. The salad was lightly seasoned and a nice way to start the meal. The gnocchi were delicious - homemade with a light pesto and olive oil sauce, topped with Parmesan flakes. The Parmesan melted on the gnocchi perfectly, and it's sharp flavor was a great contrast to the smooth and creamy pesto. Well done! Pastry To Go: I got a traditional apple strudel to go, which the waiter kindly brought in a beautiful little to go box. It was SPECTACULAR! I'll be dreaming of that when I return to Berlin to finish off my trip. :) Drinks: I ordered the forest berry tea. To my delight, the waiter brought me a full teapot and I enjoyed a couple cups of my fruity tea. I also ordered a water. Service: The service was terrific. The waiter may have been working alone, but he was quick, polite and friendly. Traveling alone this trip, I've been noticing that waiters completely forget you if you're just one. It's always hard to get the bill and I was in a big rush to catch my train after lunch. I asked for my bill up front so I didn't have to wait, but it turned out I didn't even need to do that. The waiter checked in a couple times, without bothering me. It was such a pleasant difference from some of the German restaurants I visited that had great food, but made me feel like a second class customer just because I was alone. Well done, Austria! Final Verdict: In a busy square, this was a gem! Great food selection, freshly baked Viennese pastries, cute outdoor sitting area and great service. I'll definitely be back next time.

    Espresso with Sacher Torte

Loved this place. Stopped here twice while staying across the street at the Hilton. An enormous counter display of Viennese pastries and cakes. Lots of coffee choices along with some simple breakfast and lunch items. Had a fantastic espresso called a Franziskaner and a slice of Sacher Torte.

They have a big selection of sweets and pastries, all seems to be well done and of good quality. They also have around five gluten free options which are all different from the pastries I'm used to finding in other bakeries, so it was nice to try something new. I thought it was too sweet for my taste, but I think it's supposed to be that way, so I guess there is nothing wrong with it. They also have full meals in case you'd want to have lunch but they are more known for their sweets. It's not a place I would go to for grabbing a cup of coffee, it is clearly more of a bakery than a cafe. The seating area inside is quiet big and it can get a bit noisy, but not in a disturbing way.

It's right by the train station Wien Mitte, so you can hang out and wait until it's time to head to the airport. I think you're suppose to seat yourself at any table, although we just grabbed one so perhaps we did it wrong. The tables by the large windows are for reservations only, but there are plenty of tables all over the place to sit down at. You can look at the display first and then tell your waiter what you'd like to order. The sacher torte was a little dry for my tastes, but it had the right balance of apricot jam to chocolate. Einspanner is like espresso con panna, but this coffee was STRONG. Really biased about the service, because we had a waiter that spoke Mandarin (Chinese) so we were able to easily chit-chat with him. I wish I took a pic or remembered his name, because I would honestly go back just because of him.

All you need to know: 1) This is a diner for desserts that also happens to serve breakfast. 2) It has perfect macarons. 3) Service is very friendly. 4) It serves decent coffee. 5) The macarons are absolutely perfect.

Between the Stadparkt and the train station Landstrasse-Wienmitte you'll find a wonderful Austrian coffee house with delicious and beautiful patisseries! So much work, taste and delicacy in each one of their sweets... that it reminded me of some of the greatest Parisian tea houses. Chapeau! The macarons (here they are called Laacarons, one of the specialties if Oberlaa!) were simply p-e-r-f-e-c-t: full of flavors, with a light crispy crust outside and a smooth, soft and tasty filling inside... Awesome. The café itself has a cosy and new-classic decoration, a nice atmosphere and a friendly and attentive staff. The only minus I can think of would be that they don't have any soy milk on the menu!

The restaurant is located in a round glass building. We entered and got seated immediately. It is a good spot for watching people and traffic outside, as the walls are all windows and it is located on a sort of corner between 2 semi-converging streets. They had a varied menu which included burgers, Asian soup, breakfast all day, etc. I got a salad which I enjoyed. I think both of the others got noodle soups which they also seemed to like. Service was good and prices seemed in-line with other local places. After lunch, there were convenient trams across the street to get us back to the vicinity of the Hofburg. I'd consider returning here for a meal if we were in the area.

Okay, I'm working late tonight from my hotel room and had to go grab a sandwich, I really like these sandwiches, but the people who work here are so lovely, they even wrapped my food container in Saran wrap so that my food wouldn't get cold. So kind :)

There was a spread that included with an assortment of an egg, cheese, bread, spreads, meats and fruit. As a typical Viennese breakfast, nothing was lacking! The fruit was seasonably ripe and fresh. The bread...the bread was a great with not too light, not too heavy texture. The cold Chai latte was to die for...so GOOD. I was shaking my head the whole time at how good everything was. It is a bit pricy, but worth the experience.

Everything looks gorgeous and breathtakingly beautiful, BUT the taste is not there. It is overall too sweet. The pistacchio dacquoise has benzaldehyde flavoring which I detest. The cream was real pistachio but was pretty heavy and sweet - didn't sit well with me. The Ribisel-Cremeschnitte was good, tart and sweet, but still, the cream too heavy. The vanilla cake was heavy and sweet. I mean heavy regarding double fat cream, the mouthfeel is light but you feel the fat content afterwards. Breakfast was ok - a slice of bread and brioche with jam (a little off tasting) and spread. Breakfast with coffee and pastry was 20€ which in my mind is too expensive for what it is. I wouldn't complain if the taste is as amazing as the looks. I really had high hopes for this place.
