Overpriced big plate of ordinaryMexican food. Drinks are costly and not so great. They charge for a refill of chips and salsa. The help is not friendly and it is very crowded both inside and out. I think the best attribute is the great central location and the perfect patio for summer dining.Our party of five paid $200 including tip and each person had one drink, one entree and we shared on appetizer. Of course, you have to add in the $6 we paid to refill the one basket of chips and salsa they gave for all five of us. I will not rush back. They could do so much better. read more

My family and I love this restaurant. The food is excellent. In winter the indoor space is cozy and beautifully decorated. In summer, the outdoor garden is lovely. Mexican food is often simple and very fat, cheese based. This restaurant knows how to make Mexican food that is a cut above and creative and fresh as well as in the Mexican tradition. The place is understaffed. After a significant wait, we were given a seat that had been open for some time. The queso asado is garbage. It's like they scrapped the cheese off a cooked pizza and put it on a plate. The fajitas were ok, except for the service accompanying them. i was surprised to see this only had 3 stars. this place is great. everything is pretty authentic here. the bathrooms are small and the service can be slow, but the food is always good. everything we have ever had here is good. i love the napalitos for an app too, not many places have that. they have big combination dishes which is great for someone who is hungry. the green sauce is great, rice and beans are always good and the purple cabbage is a nice touch. its always good here, cannot wait to go back in the summer and sit outside. the chips are also good with the salsa. you never leave hungry. read more

Been there a few times. Seating is a bit compressed, but has an intimate feel and acoustics are good enough so even with a pile of rug rats at an adjacent table, you can talk with friends. Waiters have always been very nice and they don't cheat you with the alcohol in the Margaritas. I had the steak fajita. At some places, they pile on the rice and other filler, but this was meaty and vegetably (is that a word?). Anyway, very tasty. Service was as fast as I wanted it to be but they didn't seem in a rush to get rid of us even on a busy saturday night. read more

Great ambience. Good margaritas and sangria. Waiters were mostly attentive. Food would be acceptable if entrees cost 10 dollars but they cost twice that. Chips and tortillas don't taste homemade and weren't warm. Very light on the meat in the dishes. No homemade hot sauce (Beacon Street Sol Azteca makes their own). I give this place 3 stars mainly because of the inconspicuous patio. I feel like Boston lacks a lot of good outdoor seating options and this place is like a hidden alley gem. The patio is pretty big and so cute The food is so-so but I think the atmosphere makes up for it. This is a great summer spot for drinks, I wouldn't say the food is the best. There are much better Mexican restaurants around the city than this (ie. Rosa Mexicano and Papagayo (love)). read more

The wifey and I decided to celebrate the end of the work week but really just ended up putting a bad taste in our mouth both literally and figuratively. $80 bucks for 2 entrees that were at best subpar. My wife ordered the pescado morita that was supposed to be the "special" of the night, turns out to be fish smothered in a green chili paste that is far too spicy to enjoy. For my dish I ordered shrimp fajitas that had no flavor, certainly not worth $25. We don't even want to get started on the sad margaritas.... Terrible. Or the stale chips.... Never again. read more

I wish that this place was good... I love the outdoor patio and the location. However, the food is TERRIBLE and the drinks are mediocre and over priced. My husband and I went here 3 years ago an were extremely disappointed with the food and service. We decided to give it another try because we loved the charming outdoor seating and decor. Sadly, we were still extremely disappointed. My meal tasted like everything on the plate came out of a can. Im not really a picky eater and I couldn't stand to finish the meal. I feel like a lot of the reviews here are unfair or too harsh. I went last night expecting the rudest service in the city based on what I read on yelp, but everybody was perfectly nice. Some dishes are definitely better than others, but I got the veggie fajitas and enjoyed it. My boyfriend had chicken with mole sauce and he really liked it. It's pretty standard Mexican food, there are definitely more upscale places to go if that's what you're looking for, but this is a solid choice. read more

I love this place. Been going there since I was a kid. Best Mexican food in the Boston area, and love the Sangria's (since I've been 21 of course). My favorite dish here is the Cilantro Shrimp. Tres Leche is one of the best desserts I've ever had. Sol Azteca has beautiful decor and artwork inside, and It's a great place to kick back and eat outside on the pateo in the summer, too. The manager there is an awesome guy and always treats us like royalty every time we come. read more

As regulars for over 30 years, starting in Brookline and continuing to Newton Centre, we've been huge fans, bringing friends and family here. Tonight was the first night we've ever walked out, before being served. It was a balmy and warm summer evening, the patio was relatively empty which was good news. We waited, and waited, and waited. We did get some chips and salsa, but the waiter(s) avoided eye contact. Count down: 5 min, 10 min, 12 min. No server, no eye contact, no "welcome I'll be back with you n 2 minutes". We had scoped out what we wanted (chicken tamale appetizer, carne asada and camarones a la cilantro, sangria). The nice host/manager that we've known for years twiddled with the flowers in pots, hung out with the bored bus boys. No one paid any attention nor come to take even a drink order. Such a sad outing. We politely got up and left, explaining to the surprised host that no one had come to our table since we were seated. read more

Our family has been going to Sol Azteca as our special occasion place for as long as I can remember (basically, since they opened). We love their food, which is not your typical "Mexican" fare. And we are partial to their margarita's too---now that our kids are grown up, they can join us in them. Don't come here expecting Tex-Mex tacos - this place has MUCH better, real Mexican food! The mole poblano and cilantro sauces are fantastic, and they have the best carnitas anywhere. Delicious chips and salsa, rice, and fantastic refried black beans! The service is extremely pleasant and helpful. They also have a really nice outdoor dining area which often fills up quickly on nice days. The food is reliably delicious! read more

This place is great! One of my favorite restaurants in Newton Center. Nice atmosphere with an outside patio. My wife and I love the sangria and margaritas. All of the enchiladas are very good, and I usually get the carne asada which is excellent. We have never been disappointed and have eaten here many times. Salsa and guacamole are great too. Definitely not a place for food allergies. The host was so sweet. Even though they don't make guacamole fresh to order, he got the kitchen to make a special batch for me without onion and he didn't even know that I needed the adjustment for a food intolerance, he was just being nice. The guacamole was crazy salty (aka inedible) but sweet that they made it special for us. We then ordered the quesadilla and nachitos without anything but tortilla and cheese. We explained this was because I can't eat onion/onion powder and asked if the waiter could double check these items would be safe for me. As I went to take a bite of the nachitos, I thankfully noticed a tiny piece of onion between the cheese and tortilla (that we then noticed throughout the whole dish) and the quesadilla was served with guacamole with onion without the waiter mentioning it had onions (which it obviously did). My friend thinks the waiter didn't even notify the kitchen based on his response to the no onion request when we ordered. We wound up paying for everything and running pretty quickly without talking to anyone about the mistake because of a mouse sighting (we were outside on the patio aka not at all faulting the restaurant for the wildlife, but we were past done with the experience). Seriously cool entrance. The narrow alleyway leading to the patio and down the stairs to the host station feels like something out of an NYC rom-com movie. Pretty small place so I'd recommend getting reservations if you're going on a Friday or Saturday. We were only two so we only had to wait 30 minutes or so. I'd say the only downside is that they don't have a bar you can hang out at while you are waiting, but you can still get a drink while you are standing there. Speaking of drinks, the patron margarita is delicious (and strong!). The decor is very relaxing and is just authentic enough, but not overdone. It feels like a Mexican place without being in-your-face Mexican, if you get my meaning. As for the food, I got the enchiladas poblanas. I ate all of it if that tells you anything. Entrees are a tad pricey for Mexican, but this is authentic Mexican and not tex-mex, so I didn't mind so much. All-in-all a great place to get some real Mexican food. read more

I have lived in Newton for years and have never been to Sol Azteca. I decided to go on Cinco de Mayo. I really wish that we had gone to a familiar place on one of my favorite holidays! If you want a margarita, that would be all that I would go for. The chips were bagged chips and not homemade. we ordered the Carne soup which was pretty decent. Then waited and waited and waited for our food. No one came over to apologize. No one cam elver to see if we wanted another drink. Our soup bowls sat there for over an hour. When the food finally came, the fajitas were burnt, the borrittto was the worst one I have ever eaten. It had no flavor. I thought I could spice it up with hot sauce and the hot sauce was some generic sauce that was fluorescent green...filled with food dies and preservatives. The poor couple next to us were still waiting for their food when we left. On top of e food being horrible, it is expensive,too. That will be my one and only time going to Cafe Sol Azteca. read more
