It was my first time having shito. The Jollof wasn't my favorite, unfortunately, but it finally settled the debate for me once and for all - I'm team Nigerian when it comes to Jollof. Although the Efo Riro was nicely flavored, the mix of collard greens did not compliment this dish as I thought it would. I prefer it with spinach and from my Nigerian food connect (Mina's Jollof in LA). Hers can't be beaten! Black Eye Peas were unique, and the plantains were cooked nicely. There was no one in the restaurant when I walked in. It kind of had a strange smell inside. In order to order you have to ring a bell because there is only one man working the entire restaurant. I told him I wanted to order to go. He quickly tried to say "it's going to take awhile" and when I asked how long he said "depends on what you get. So I say I want the Beef Suya and the Jollof and I pay, THEN he tells me it's going to take 30 minutes. I'm like ok Now on to the food. Probably the driest Jollof I ever had. The food was delicious but I found service to be slow and menu to be misleading. I ordered Waakye which states it is vegetarian but after eating and asking how it was made, I found out it had shrimp and dried fish. Ate here a week ago and still dreaming about the Suya fries! I actually learned of this spot from a non-related Yelp review that mentioned the restaurant - looked it up and it was 12 mins away from me! I've been looking for a new African restaurant to try close by, so it was really just my luck. We came for takeout on a slow Sunday - the wonderful waitress helped us order (didn't get her name). She even kindly brought our order to the car while we were waiting, very nice of her. We ordered Suya fries, Suya beef & jollof with goat and plantain. Truly blown away by the Suya fries as I've never had anything like it before - delicious. The flavors were THERE. Seasoning was on point and the mayo based sauce on top was so damn good. Delicious E African fare in a dim, intimate setting. Wish we could have gone on a day there was a live performance! I've gone here twice and their stews and swallows don't disappoint. This time around we tried their jollof rice which was super flavorful - not too wet like I've had it in the past either. They also have vegetarian/vegan-friendly options which was perfect for my vegan friends. My chicken was great but my friends' beef was on the tougher side. U P D A T E Still a solid 4! This time I got the same thing, whole red snapper and it was delicious. I also opted for the parboiled Jollof rice. The rice was perfectly cooked (a bit al dente) and was quite dark in color. It was my first time trying Ghanaian jollof at a restaurant. Much darker than Nigerian jollof with a flavor profile I could not place. It was just as familiar as it was foreign. Being Nigerian, naturally I prefer the Nigerian version so I don't think I'll be getting this again. Personally, I think this meal goes PERFECTLY with tostones - so if you like those (fried smashes green plantain) make some at home or pick some up somewhere else nearby (*cough cough Tortugas!) with your to-go order. My besties dad (Nigerian) had his 70th birthday party at this spot! I arrived on a Saturday evening around 5:00 pm, for a 4:30pm surprise party- don't judge me! I am typically prompt,but had to stop and get a gift! When you walk through the entrance the hostess stand is immediately to your right. There were two young ladies standing there, and appeared a little confused. To help them out, I just pointed t the area where the party was located and said I am here for the event......first impression- ok??! After being in the resturant for about 15-20 min a wait staff finally appeared in the section we were seated. A few people placed orders. There was never really a Formal introduction of the wait staff, or an indication that it was time to place orders. As such, several people did not place their orders until after another 15-20 min had passed. Now this is the kicker, the food that was ordered during the second set of orders came out first!!! HOOOWWWW is that possible? Admittedly I am unfamiliar with African cuisine. I asked my bestie how to pronounce the name of a few Dishes and she had no clue. We decided to ask her dad, he too had never heard of the dishes.however, my bestie suggested the jollof rice with chicken. This is a spiced rice, served with plantains and a tomato based chicken. Collectively this dish was a win. The rice is a bit spicy, but when you eat it with the plantains it has a calming effect. My bestie shared with me that fufu is a popular African dish. Several of the patron of the party did indulge in this. It was a delight to witness the tradition of eating with your hands. Apparently two bowls of water are placed in front of you for washing your hands before and after eating. If I am in the area again it's highly likely that I will order some jollof to go. Came in around 8pm so it wasn't as busy, was seated in no time. Me and my wife chose a good night to come because they had a live band playing Afro-Jazz and they sounded amazing! We browsed the menu and ended up deciding to share some Jollof Rice with Fish, sweet plantains, and salad and it was pretty decent ! The rice was Super flavorful and the fish had a slight crunch to it, which took it over the top. Only downside to the dish is that the portion size for the fish and salad was smaller then I expected it to be. Horrible!! This is the second time I've come and gotten old tasting food! The first time I let it go but this time I called and asked to speak to the manager and couldn't get a hold of them! My peanut butter soup was a deep dark brown and not that silky Carmel color I'm accustomed to that leaves an aroma of good eats! It smelled old! It instantaneously made me sick after a few bites! Most of my lamb was hard as rock and clearly old and overcooked! The lamb also had a TON of bones also! The only star is the bean stew which was great but is also is the cheapest (go figure)!! I'm so disappointed! And to not even have the courtesy of the managers concern when I complain or a give me a call back (yes I left my number) is more than enough sign needed to search elsewhere!! I came here and ordered their egusi soup w fufu and jollof rice. But it made my daughter throw up. And it made me want to throw up too after two bites. I returned the food and they said there is nothing wrong with it. They were very nice people but kept the food and didn't offer anything else. The egusi soup smelled so bad and old. The rice was very hard. I've never returned a food in my life except once twenty years ago when I immediately got food poisoning from a dish at Applebees. I even left a tip on this to go order but all of it was thrown away. A waste of $30. Okay I am going to edit this review. Apparently they gave me a complete refund when I left. But they never told me this until I received a phone call the next day. I am glad they refunded the money even though I did not ask for a refund. Ummm, she instead was promoting the joloff rice that everyone raved about in other reviews. I on the other hand wanted to live life on the wild side! I opted for the Nigerian spicy goat soup! Upon waitress insistence served with white rice! I was going to try the pound yam, but again, she was telling me, not a good idea. The soup, was absolutely delicious! Spicy, but not so much so that you can't taste the flavors! The goat meat could have been a tad bit softer, and I could tell that it was not cooked with the soup itself! She didn't say anything when we walked in, we had to prompt her. When we got to the table she just put the menus down and stood there, didn't ask what we wanted, we had to initiate it. The bean stew was good, but the the jollof had whole pieces of rosemary which are inedible and my partner could barely chew the lamb, and the fried plantain was underripe. When it came time for the check, the waitress literally stood watching as I signed for the tip, which is obviously unprofessional. My friend recommended this place to me when I said I wanted to try African food for the first time. I was surprised that it was only couple minutes drive from my house in Norcross so I headed there the same day. As soon as I walked in I was greeted and seated right away. The inside is wonderfully decorated with traditional African music playing in the background. There's a bar area where you can order drinks and a small dance floor where I believe they host small parties on the weekend. I had to go with the Jollof rice as my first dish as I've heard many of my friends talk about the argument between Ghanians and Nigerians over who makes the better Jollof rice. I also went ahead and got Suya beef as an appetizer just out of curiosity. It was great at the moment decision as the beef had a more tougher texture but it made for great chewing. The Suya seasoning came on the side so you can add as much or as little as you want but as a spice lover myself I made sure to use as much as I could on each bite. It was that good! The Jollof rice came just as I finished the Suya beef and looked amazing. It came with a good portion of rice, plantain, some greens, and a choice of chicken, beef, or fish. I went with beef as my choice of meat and it came covered in a delectable sauce. Mixing the sauce with my rice made my meal taste 10x better. Coming here as the place to try my first authentic African meal was a great decision. The only reason why I wouldn't give it a perfect rating is that the service while not being terrible, also wasn't outstanding either. My family and I visited Cafe Songhai in November 2018. We ordered different dishes...family style. We were all new to this cuisine and the waitress was very helpful. Everyone was satisfied with the dishes. I don't know if we had the real thing or if some of the dishes were Americanized. It's hard to know or tell if you haven't been overseas and actually tasted the food. Everything tasted delicious to us. I would go back for certain. I decided to give this place one more try and ended up giving them two more tries, both of which were disappointing. I wonder why they keep changing their waitstaff and so far, it's only been one waiter who actually provided decent customer service. The rest don't seem to care. We tried their palm-nut soup and rice; the soup was awful. My okra soup had a piece of foil or something in it, so I lost my appetite. I called the waitress' attention and she told the owner. He came over and apologized and blamed the kitchen staff. The right thing to do would have been to comp the food, but he had the nerve to say he will discount my food next time. Discount?? There will be no next time! You lost a valuable customer. We also ordered the light soup which was pretty good. Their food is somewhat overpriced and if you dare ask for a side of pepper, know that you will get charged. It's like going to McDonald's and getting charged for ketchup. For the price of the food and service here, I'd rather go somewhere else where they'd provide better service. My husband and I saw this place on Google looking for African cuisine. Keren displayed great customer service. She was very friendly and attentive. We ordered Gizzards for an appetizer and Beef Suya and Jollof rice for our main dish. The food was delicious, and the meat was tender. There is an 18% gratuity charge, but it tells you on the menu. Our meal was a total of $71. A little too much if you ask me, but it's all good. They have an Instagram page and some nights they have Jazz night with live musicians. Went here for dinner last night and left disappointed. I was quite excited to try this place because of the good reviews. But the food was just okay and service was basically non-existent. The place is located on Holcomb Bridge Rd in a small shopping area. The place is big and interiors were nice. We were immediately seated but didn't really have much of a friendly greeting. We were seated right next to the speakers and the music was playing too loud that it was hard for me and my friend to hear each other. As we were seated our server greeted us but just basically stared at us for a a few seconds without asking if we wanted something to drink. We told her we would like water then she asked if we wanted appetizers. It was just a bit of awkward silence while we waited for her to ask what we wanted to drink. I ordered jollof rice with fish and my friend ordered waakye with chicken. The fish was really good and was complemented by the rice well. However, the waakye was unimpressive. The rice was really dry and the chicken was not cooked all the way through. Serving was also very scarce for the waakye. It was just 2 tiny PCs of really bony chicken. Our server was quite inattentive. Not once did she ask if we needed more water or if there's anything we needed. They werent even busy at all.
