Great service and amazing food! I will say that a lot of there items like the pancakes and chicken were abnormally sweet but overall was still very good! I would definitely recommend the Potato Sizzler Skillet. If you are there in the morning and are craving a coffee I would recommend you special order, very good as well. read more

Met my mom here for lunch after church & it was the perfect spot! We were seated in the museum section which was kinda cool. After we finished eating- we were able to walk around & look at all the exhibits. Photos are not allowed as there is a sign up which states there will be fines. However, everyone was super friendly & our meals arrived quickly. We got there at 1 & their CFS was already sold out as our waitress advised this is what they are known for & they get it in fresh daily. Super fun place to have lunch or even dinner. So glad we stopped in for lunch while exploring Huntsville. The cafe claims to be the longest in years of operation. Not sure if that is true but it certainly was far and above on the quality of food and service that one typically gets at a cafe. It is housed in an old brick building on Sam Houston Avenue across from the Walker County Courthouse. I was there with a group of friends and we had been exploring Huntsville all morning and worked up quite an appetite. As we entered we were greeted by a server who quickly seated us. The decor inside is quite modern, very clean and bright in appearance. They have a semi open kitchen at one end and their museum is in an adjoining room. Drinks were ordered and then we all ordered our lunch entrees. We were pleasantly surprised when they came out, the servings were very generous without being overpowering and nicely plated. Two in our party ordered hamburgers with French fries which looked and tasted lovely from what they said. Two of us had the Crab Cakes which were very good, 3 in heart shapes on each plate with a nice remoulade and corn/black bean salsa. One member of our group had a salad. After lunch we walked through the museum which has lovely lighting and display cases. It's an odd mix of artifacts but after touring the HEARTS Veterans Museum as well as the Prison Museum we enjoyed the difference in items displayed I saw where a previous YELP review claimed it was too expensive but we would disagree. You get what you pay for and we got great food and lovely service. If you want cheap, go to an average chain restaurant. People forget that since Covid, the price of ingredients is way up as well as employee salaries, rent and insurance. We heartily recommend this establishment. Please see photos attached read more

We arrived right when they opened. Breakfast was great! I had the morning charcuterie (1/4 waffle, poached egg, fresh fruit, cheese slices & bacon), which was the perfect amount of food. My husband had the breakfast on the square - eggs, biscuit, potatoes, bacon & added gravy. Both were very good, well cooked. (Forgot pics sorry). Server was very attentive. Why 4 stars? Because this is a very unique choice in Huntsville. --- --- --- I graduated from Sam Houston in 2006. At the time, I absolutely loved Huntsville and some of my fondest memories come from that town. As a 40 year old, I realize that it is not exactly a culinary wonderland. Basically every restaurant is a dive bar that happens to also serve food. And why wouldn't that be the base? Anything near campus is completely geared toward 20 year olds. But Cafe Texan is the one exception. It's weird, I don't know if I actually ever even ate here during my 3 years at Sam, or during any of my visits back since. But when making the trek up for a football game recently, this was my pre-game spot. Everything in here is nice. Not fine dining steakhouse nice, but just really classy. It felt like eating somewhere near the Galleria, more than Huntsville. Even the little things like the door knobs and the faucet heads were high-end. As for the food, I couldn't resist ordering anything other than the Chicken Fried Steak. I was shocked at how quickly it came out: it was legitimately 5 minutes at the most, maybe less. I swapped out the green beans for creamed corn and was surprised that it wasn't really the typical ground up creamed corn, but more so kind of a corn salad concoction. I liked it, but just a warning not to expect the usual here. The mashed potatoes were very average. But the chicken fried steak itself was solid. It improved when I added some salt, as it was a little bland before that. But I dug it. And the best part of eating in Huntsville? It's hilariously inexpensive. I think it was $21 and my lunch portion was big enough that I didn't have to eat again all day. read more

II wasn't impressed. I stopped in on a Saturday afternoon and had higher hopes for this place, but it didn't live up to expectations. The seating is limited, and the space was very crowded and loud, which made it hard to relax. What struck me as odd was the restroom situation--they only had a women's and a family restroom, with no designated men's restroom. I attempted to use the restroom three times, but the family restroom was always occupied. When I asked the waitress, she told me that men are expected to use the family restroom. That setup just doesn't seem practical when the place is busy and I never had a chance to use the restroom As for the food, I ordered the chicken Caesar salad and found it underwhelming. The chicken and croutons were nearly indistinguishable, and the spinach was warm and wilted, almost like it had been sautéed definitely not what I expected from a Caesar salad. Haven't been to Cafe Texan since they tore down the old one. We walked in and knew it was not the same place we enjoyed anymore. After we were seated and received menus we waited and waited yet no one ever came to get our drink order. Our special needs daughter was very hungry so we were anxious to order. I couldn't wait to take friends and family to come in town and take them there since the first time the food was great (coffee was soapy the first time, grease was old the third time). 3 strikes you're out. The Cafe is a small quant location that is welcoming. Staff was friendly. The menu is simple which makes it easy to choose. We went in for breakfast and it was delicious. 3 pancakes were large with an added side of bacon completed the dish. Poached egg was cook the right amount and the potato patty was more than expected. It's mediocre. My problem with this restaurant is its lack of consistency, which is crucial in the restaurant business. Dined here recently and the first thing we noticed was dirty menus (they were paper and full of food stains) kind of gross. The floor vents were right under our chairs and putting out some really cold air...when we asked the server if the air could be turned down, she said it wasn't possible and instead brought us menu holders to place ON THE FLOOR to cover the vents....the food was ok, nothing great. I remember the old cafe Texan.. in the early /mid 90s. What a treat it was to see an old school "iconic" place in Huntsville..come to a level of stellarness you probably wouldnt believe! I discovered a gem in Huntsville!! Okay, maybe a few others have been before me, but I loved it nonetheless. The building is quite old and on the square, and has been beautifully restored. The cafe and museum are connected; design, decor and art are fantastic in both!! A friendly and knowledgeable hostess seated us and our waitress brought great coffee drinks from the bar. I'm a sucker for Benedicts, and really good ones are harder to find than one might think. The combo of pork belly and biscuit made a Texas-Classic base for the perfectly poached eggs and really excellent hollandaise. Everyone else loved their meals as well. This is our first time at the Cafe Texan since it's been remodeled!! We took a chance and didn't make reservations. Huge risk, but we got lucky and snagged a small table for 2 by the window!! Lucky because they are known for being extremely busy! Our waitress was so bubbly and fun this morning! She had a great personality and was very attentive throughout our meal!! I chose to try the mimosa this morning!! Huge glass and tastes delicious!!! We also ordered right away which our waitress loved!! I got the Avocado Toast with a medium fried egg on top! It was perfection!!! It comes with two pieces of toast with bright baby tomatoes and greens on top!! The egg was cooked perfectly!! My husband got the eggs Benedict! Looked amazing but didn't get to try!! If your waiter/waitress asks if you want the buttermilk biscuits say yes? If they don't ask, ask for yourself!!! They're amazing!!! I don't think this place is going to be open for long. The worst part is how painfully slow they are and how overpriced it is. I had a burger, it was okay, but it was one of the cheapest options on the menu and it was $16. On their lunch menu. It took 15 minutes for them to take my order and another 25 for them to deliver it to me, I asked for a condiment when they brought my food and they took 10 minutes getting it to me. Then when I asked for the check, they use that stupid handheld scanner where they are standing there waiting for you to give them a tip and then when you want a receipt, they take several minutes to get it to you. The whole process is very slow. And if it was packed I could understand, but they had 6 people working and 15 people eating. If you want to have a mostly lunch place, you can't keep people there for over an hour. The museum is kinda interesting, but it's obviously a rich guy's vanity project that doesn't have a theme and doesn't have much to do with the area. It's really a waste of space that they could have used as more seating space. All of this points towards someone who has seen other fancy restaurants do things and is trying to copy them, but each is different and they don't work together. Like mixing rustic things, and modern things, and industrial things. That also is like mixing things in the museum, it has Japanese things, and 1800s American things, and Pablo Picasso works, and a display to the line survivor guy, and for some reason the brother of the lone survivor guy. It's a lot of money and no taste. This is just highlighting someone who doesn't know what they are doing, but they want to show you how much they spent on it all. read more

Ashamed I haven't reviewed this place yet because me and my mom came here twice a while back with just us the first time, and the second time, we brought my mom's friend who's a history nerd like us. We love this place! Delicious food, the roasted chicken I remember being very good and the chicken fried steak my mom got was also really good. I hope to try their other lunch, dinner, and breakfast menu items in the future. I will definitely ask my mom for us to come back the next time we are in or go to Huntsville. Please check this place out, it's just awesome! Ambiance is real cool as well! Ate brunch there for the first time today. It was delicious! The eggs were cooked perfectly. The fried pork belly bacon didn't end up being too my liking, but there were plenty of other meat options I could have chosen. Our waitress and waiter were great and helpful and knew the menu well. The museum part was interesting but also seemed random. The first thing you see when you walk in is some artifacts from ancient Egypt. I was expecting just Texas history, but I ended up loving the variety of things to look at. I have to give the biscuit its own paragraph. Hands down the best biscuit I've ever had (don't tell my Grandma). It was perfectly fluffy, not at all dry, and I didn't even need to butter it. It was already buttery soft. If you're still on the fence about going, at least try the biscuit. It will change your life. read more

But here are the highlights of how my mind was confused by food: - ordered over medium eggs and rcvd runny over easy but the egg was farm raised quality in taste - hash brown stack had great texture but NO flavor - they didn't have grits (disappointed) so I got fruit cup and none of it had flavor...
