They warm up the table with this amazing cornbread & hot rolls Today I had the fried catfish with fries and coleslaw. It was deliciously light & flaky but so filling I only ate 1 filet. The coleslaw was the best I've ever had! Ever! And I don't normally eat/like hush puppies but I always try and thumbs up; different from what I've tried in years past. My husband had the chicken fried steak with okra & mashed potatoes which I got a 'it was good' response which really means... he ate all of it with no complaints. Lol very rare to get a 'fantastic' or 'delicious' outta him. There are no booths, which is my preferred dining experience but we're not here for the comfort! The table was a little wobbly but I didn't care, I love staring at the pie shelf while dining! Nicely country style decorum. We came here 26th for a 5pm dinner Staff were very friendly and we were seated immediately They have a good combo dinner for 26.50. An appetizer main and dessert We got served some fresh cornbread and dinner rolls and also had fried pickles and hot wings. Then we had the chicken fried chicken and different sides. Finally we had banana pie and coconut pie as dessert. I know we ordered lots of fried food and it was good. The pies were not good. This is one of our favorites in Huntsville, a must-try eatery if you are in the area. The have a good assortment of local flavors and down home comfort foods. And, during the week, they have a nice list of lunch specials at a discounted price. My favorites are their Philly cheesesteak chicken fried steak plate and the fried catfish plate. For sides, I prefer the mashed potatoes and the fried okra. They also have a fresh cucumber and tomato salad that is amazing. Finish off the meal and be sure to save room for a slice of homemade pie. The great, prompt, friendly service you expect in an established family-owned restaurant was enhanced by actual, real, authentic fried green tomatoes for a delicious meal. Yeah, they got sneaky with me. This place is smaller than I thought it would be. It's very cozy, but very comfortable. The staff was very friendly very quick, and very good at what they do. The biggest complaint I had while we were there was that there was a table beside us that was dirty. When we got there, jelly on the floor, food on the table, spilled water. And even though there were times the staff was standing around the table was never cleaned. When we first got there, there was this little menu on the table that simply had the specials for each day of the week. That's all I had on it. I was absolutely astounded, in a very good way. I loved it and then they gave me the rest of the menu . The menu is very well laid out with a very good assortment of unusual yet comfortable foods They brought out a basket of cornbread and rolls with butter, and this is where they got sneaky. It's not jalapeño cornbread, it's too sweet for that. It's broccoli cornbread! I can't stand broccoli, I'm never liked it in my life! I had two helpings of this cornbread . It was outstanding. It was the best cornbread I've ever eaten. Ever. I had the chicken fried steak, and while it was good, it was not the best I've ever had. And I love chicken fried steak. My wife's plate was some sort of sandwich. She said it was good. The sides were good. The highlight was the Sneaky, broccoli and cornbread. Great southern comfort food close to SHSU's campus. If I went to school at SHSU, I'd be here all the time. Back camping at Huntsville SP again, and remembered how much we enjoyed this place- so, here we are! Perfectly timed for Sunday lunch, we got our name on the list then stepped over to the Farmhouse Coffee and Cream for a decaf flat white (with coconut- SUPER tasty!). Made the ~20 minute wait back over here at the restaurant seem quick. Ordering up a fav from last time (coconut shrimp) and trying a new app (southwest egg rolls); the cold chicken salad for me, hubs is having grilled chicken salad. (Which Colton, our server, took a few minutes to explain- it's not the normal bed of lettuce topped by a grilled chicken breast, but a Mexican style warm salad with zucchini and onions, the chicken sautéed in spicy sauce. Appreciated the heads up, and hubby is game for trying it) and we'll split a wedge salad between us. We're trying to keep it low carb and semi healthy b/c we know there's probably going to be pie (or sweet treats from the coffee shop) in our future. YUM! The coconut shrimp and orange marmalade is still a tropical delight- such an incredible combination. The southwest egg rolls are predictable, but tasty. Not a huge fan of the wedge salad, it's just a simple blue cheese dressing, but I will give kudos to the fact that they split the salad before bringing it out since hubby and I said we were sharing it. A very GENEROUS scoop of cold chicken salad for my entrée. Needed a little salt and pepper to bring the flavor out, but I'm impressed with how much shredded chicken it is (most places give you a larger ratio of the filler veggies (onions, celery, egg, etc) but the chicken really is the star here!) Hubby's salad came in a fried taco shell, with plenty of filling. Very tasty, spicy but no heat. He'd have it again (and mentioned again how glad we are for the heads up that it's not a lettuce based salad!) Hubs is having a (HUGE) slice of coconut cream pie; I'm opting for a few sweet treats out of the bakery case at the coffee shop. I'm not a big meringue fan, so he's given me little bits of just the coconut cream... and once again, the crust on these pies is cookie-delicious to-die-for! Another great meal, with great service (thanks Colton!) and we'll certainly be back again! --------- Y'all the team in here today is HUSTLING- seriously, most of the crew is moving at warp speed. Except for this one guy (we'll call him Hungover Hank). I kid you not, if it weren't for the front counter holding him up, I'm pretty sure he'd be on the floor asleep. If (and I mean IF) he's helping out to bus and clear a table, he's moved at a snail's pace in comparison to his colleagues) And normally, I wouldn't mention this in my reviews, but if the manager reads these, they need to know this kiddo at the host stand is a major turn-off when you first get here and he can barely stand up, open his eyes to greet you and acknowledge your presence. Big fan of southern restaurants with the farmhouse feels and good food. The decor was modern farmhouse - think Joanna Gaines, industrial yet old-fashioned. The chicken fried chicken was yummy - lightly breaded and juicy chicken, served with the quintessential white gravy. The seasoning was a bit light for my taste on the chicken, but with some extra pepper in the white gravy, I was content. The star here is the dessert - lemon icebox pie. Yum! Do not skip the dessert b/c they make the pies in-house and they are great. The kids enjoyed the mac and cheese and chicken as well. Service was also hospital. Friendly and accommodating. What a disappointment. I was really looking forward to my lunch. I pulled up and the building is impressive. The inside has a nice comfortable look. Cornbread and yummy yeasty rolls are served with whipped butter and jam before your meal. The cornbread looked like it was going to be delicious but it was lacking any flavor punch. Finally, my monte cristo sandwich arrived. It had a sliver of ham and American cheese and was heavily battered and deep fried. After a few bites, the ham was gone.
