I LOVE College Town places to eat. While in Huntsville, TX, home of the Sam Houston State University Bearkats, my daughter suggested the Potato Shack for lunch. On first glance, this looks to be a converted Dairy Queen that has been subjected to a Frankenstein process of additions over the years. Walking in you are subjected to the ordering line that is merged with a full bar. This place, inside, is what I think a college hangout is supposed to look like. Lucky 19 Brewing signs run amok on the walls ... I later found out that it is also a hometown brewery that makes a really good IPA, but that is another tale. Sturdy tables and metal chairs await us after we order. My Wife and Daughter got the "Classic Potato" that has bacon, chives, cheese, butter and sour cream, with my daughter subbing the potato for tater tots. Either way it is served, there is plenty of starchiness to go around. My lunch was the Thursday Special - the Hotwing Potato. This is a average sized baker that is easy to break apart with a fork to stir in the chunks of fried chicken, melted cheddar and lots of hot wing sauce. I added ranch and sour cream to the mix for more of a flavor blend. Usually I try and take a before shot to show what it looks like before demolishing it with utensils as it drops into my piehole. However, I did manage a shot right after mixing. The chicken chunks were crispy and cooked through and through. Their buffalo sauce had enough kick to let my tongue know what it was without scorching my taste buds. I paired it with the Lucky 19 Texas IPA and it was a good flavor profile for my particular potato selection. Now, for the big reveal ... I would eat at this place regularly if I lived in Huntsville. Very reasonable pricing and extremely fast service. The "queso" cheese sauce is basic Costco nacho cheese sauce, I wouldn't get it again, very mediocre. Something house-made and with a custom flavor was expected. The "crispy chicken" is another store bought product that's chopped up and put on top. The mango-habanero sauce had a little kick, but was way too sweet for my preference. Overall, not a culinary hotbed, but a unique dining experience none-the-less. read more

I was very disappointed in the service here. I went over what I wanted 4 times with the girl taking my order to go. I ordered a 1/2 order of fries with chopped brisket. Add ranch dressing, siracha and queso. First time she told me my total would be $22. FOR WHAT? She had my order wrong. I repeated myself 3 more times. She finally got my total down to $14. But I was still skeptical. My order was done, I paid and left. When I got back to work and checked my food it was nowhere near what I had ordered. IT had BBQ sauce, melted cheese and onions. I didn't ask for any of this. I did not get the ranch, the siracha and no queso. This is not the first time I've had a problem with the service here. Thought I would give them a 2nd chance. A restaurant dedicated to potatoes and beer? I am home! I am a poutine gal to boot, so this had to be the first menu item I tried. I ordered and shared it with my companion. While we have notes, we are happy with it! It's a carbaliscious trip to heaven. Plenty of gravy and toppings. I expect curds on my poutine and this was shaved mozz. It also was not melted cheese which was a surprise. I would have preferred it at least warmed on the fries. I had a local Lucky IPA draft. I was happy with this beer. Great laid back ambiance when you walk in. Has a nice outdoor patio with TV's, the inside has a bar along with plenty of tables. Ordered some appetizers: we got the large cheese sticks, Chips with Salsa & Queso and the Southwest egg-rolls. I had to Google why restaurants use the same oil for all of their proteins and understand it's for cost efficiency and practicality. Where do food allergies fit into that equation? Originally had 4 items I wanted to buy and ended up only buying two. when I got home I realized I could only try one of the items because the shack fries get fried in the same oil as the other proteins. Late reaction, I know. I was hungry and tired at that point. The potato of the month for April wasn't good. The chicken tasted bad and so did the Alfredo sauce and potato. Which I find ironic because the restaurant is called the Potato Shack. Thankfully I got to live through my fiancee as he ate the shack fries. He liked them better than the potato of the month. I wanted to try out this place as the reviews are very good. The atmosphere is definitely a college town restaurant but comfortable enough for families and older people. It's loud but they have nicely spaced out tables. You step up to order first then select your seat. We picked the chicken bbq potato and the Shepard's pie potato. Just some iced tea for drinks but they have a good beer selection of local variety too. The potato's were tasty and filling and i enjoyed the experience too. I would definitely go back for more! After a really bd day at the hospital we wanted some food and saw this place on yelp. The hardest thing was trying to pick one thing. The waiter/cashier tries to help and was really cool about it. The potato was big the steak was great the gray was taste my only complaint was it was basicly like ordering a chicken fried steak with potatos and gravy I realized when eatting. Walking inside and seeing the never ending line I had incredibly high hopes for this establishment and its food. However myself and my family were sorely disappointed. The only good part of our meal were the appetizers which I genuinely enjoyed. The fried mushrooms and onion rings were objectively delicious. However, the rest of the food was less than satisfactory. The overpowering prescience of oil, made the food practically inedible, making the oil the only thing you could taste. First impressions: the atmosphere is giving - sports bar, smells really yummy and they have a variety of potato options. This seems like a cool spot to hang with some friends while having some yummy food! I'm not sure I was completely sold on the shrimp creole and I'll explain. Why 5 stars? Because a menu full of loaded baked potatoes is all I need to know. --- --- --- I graduated Sam Houston State 15 years ago and was back to check out the city and campus. The first house I lived in is now a CVS and next door, Potato Shack is now an official university building of some sort. My, how things change in a decade and a half. While my old bedroom is the deodorant aisle now and never to be seen again, fortunately Potato Shack moved down the street into a much larger building. While I was tempted to check out a new place instead of an old haunt, I couldn't resist the temptation of nostalgia. My first question is: why are there not many places like this? You can pile just about anything on a baked potato and make it great, so why isn't this more of a thing everywhere? For a while, there was another location, ironically in Friendswood where I grew up. And it looks like there's one in College Station. But I need these to be in every city in America. And not just Potato Shack's, but competing potato-based businesses. The aforementioned CVS has Walgreen's. Why can't Potato Shack have Potato House? While I could have ordered at least ten different items and been thrilled, I went with a classic: the BBQ. And it was great. Was the steak meat the highest quality? No. But it was smothered in BBQ sauce, cheese, chives and sour cream, so I didn't care. I'd like to come up to Huntsville for at least one football game each year, so I might have to make Potato Shack my designated first stop. read more

You walk in, order your food at the desk, he or she will take your order, give you your cup and number. You get your own drink and have a seat on any available table. Put your number on the number holder. I had a potato the first time I was here and the second time, I ordered their take on their poutine. It's not as good as if you were in Montréal Quebec, but for a Texas take, it was very good. Much better than I expected. They give you a lot of food! So you will not be eating all of it unless you're really hungry. There is a bar off to the side if you wanted to order an adult beverage. Customer Service is amazing! Potato Shack had vegetarian options, so I decided we decided to try. I do eat fish and shrimp so I was still able to add some protein to my potato. Since this was the first time I've been there I wasn't sure on the sauces, so I got the garlic sauce on the side. I'm glad I did because it was a bit too sweet for me. I also got ranch, but for some reason that didn't mesh well with this either. The potato was still good with just the veggies and Parmesan. I think I'd try a different combo next time. I'm just happy I could find a place that had enough options for me as a vegetarian and also have lots of options for my mom to eat too since she is not vegetarian. She got the chicken fried steak special potato. I did have a bite and it was ok. She liked it. The gravy was really good. There was one girl at the cash register when we walked in. She was super friendly and made sure everyone waiting got menus. There were a few people waiting trying to figure out what they wanted and a bit of a late lunch rush appeared while we figured out what to get too. It made a bit of a confusing crowd in the space around the front door. Since this was our first time, I'm not sure if this happens a lot. But I would suggest putting a system in place where you can scan a QR code at the table or a sign at the front to order. That way everyone can sit at the table if they're dinning in without being in the way by the door. If you already have something like that in place, then I missed it with all of the people standing around. Another suggestion, I've seen people using jackfruit as an alternative to pulled meats for vegetarians. It would be so great if y'all could off a bbq jackfruit option. I think the potato I had would have been good with maybe a mushroom gravy (vegetarian friendly). Just some thoughts. I know I'm not necessarily the target audience for this place. During first-year drop-offs , visits, and pickups, we DON'T LEAVE TOWN without stopping by the potato Shack! These are THEE LARGEST dressed baked potatoes around-and stand alone as a complete meal. They have an endless menu of flavors and toppings-EVERYTHING you can think of on a baked potato! Our family favorite to order: "The Shredded": with barbecued pulled pork! They'll also garnish it with tons of shredded cheese, green onions, and sour cream on the side. Though we seem to be stuck on this flavor, there are tons of other delicious varieties to choose from! Ambiance is festive - inside and out - as we are in a college town-"Eat'em up Kats!" Casual, family-friendly spot to hang out. There are even some games (giant Jenga) around to complete the party vibe. This place is alright but you really shouldn't expect to be either wowed or disappointed in any way. It's pretty average. You can tell that a lot of their items are just frozen in bags and reheated and they even reheat fried stuff in what honestly seems to be the microwave because stuff like tots will come to you very soggy sometimes and not the right color. Portions are massive so depending on your appetite size you could easily get multiple meals out of one potato. For about $13 that's not a bad deal to get. The decor and vibes are pretty fun but this place popped up when searching for places with pool tables due to a review that said they had them and it seems like they must've removed them so do not get your hopes up for pool like we did. Overall you pay for what you get and this place is no exception. The staff tends to be pretty nice and the atmosphere is lively but food quality just tends to be average leaning into kind of gross depending on what you get. read more
