I was able to get kale at $1/bunch. The red amaranth and the fuzzy melon was by the pound. The bok choy and yi choy was $2 each. Fruit was $3.50/pound. Street parking only. I tend to go between 8:00 and 9:00 am for better parking and more inventory. There's also fresh fish and stalls with donuts and cooked foods. There's also market it 2 blocks x 2 blocks. They often have fresh caught fishes, fresh produce, fresh flowers, fresh local honey and this place has naturally made ingredients cream and lotion for your face and body. One thing I love the most about this farmer's market is that there is always a live band or live music! Parking is street parking in Chinatown which is tough. You can come locally by bus or get off the BART on 12th Street City Center and walk towards Jack London. Some vendors take credit cards but cash is gold here! I love coming back on sunny days and always look forward every Friday mornings!!

I ordered the $9.99 Falafel Plate with three freshly deefalafel balls, hummus, baba ganoush, and a salad with cucumbers, tomatoes, Kalamata olives, turnip, pickles, and feta cheese (photo). It came with a fluffy pita quartered for easier scooping. The market only has one table out on the sidewalk which I shared with a young mother and her daughter. I can say unequivocally that everything tasted fresh. I believe the woman who prepared my plate made everything that morning, and it made me want to come back and try the shawarma, the lentil soup, and the wraps. Great balls. You're welcome. I came by and got some fresh, sweet strawberries and a thick slice of sourdough focaccia bread that was soft and paired great with some rosemary infused olive oil. They didn't have any hot food vendors though, so I was a bit bummed by that. Parking is available on the street via meters.

Bought loose all natural teas but they were expensive. From $20 - $30 per bag. I usually buy loose natural teas at my local farmers market in Tracy and they are $15 per bag no matter what type of tea is is. It was quiet since I arrived right at 10am when it opens. Not many people at all walking around. The tea vendor was nice but seemed nervous, which I thought was odd. Unless this was his first time selling. It is a family run home grown teas.

The "Rice & Pickles" menu also varies, so you don't know what you'll be getting until you show up. I had booked my reservation via email months in advance and requested for a bar seat. We showed up early and looked around the shop; they didn't seem ready yet so we told them we'll wait outside until it was time to check in. Once people started showing up, they were essentially in front of us. I had presumed the staff we talked to would remember we were there first already, but just wanted to wait outside since they weren't ready. Luckily, we were still sat at the bar as we requested, but it was just a chaotic check in system - or I would say there really wasn't one at all. Once we sat down at opening along with everyone else, it still took a while to be served. They were essentially still prepping as we were sat there. The bar seating area was preferred because we could listen to Kevin introduce the food. He was very passionate, but everyone else working there just seemed annoyed to be there. However, the stools are wildly uncomfortable and we were really squished in. The height was also just wrong so you either had to hold the bowl (which was pretty big and heavy) or lean over very far to eat. Now, the pickling/fermenting was Japanese inspired? But it wasn't done well, in my opinion. They used a lot of Asian ingredients but the actual execution was poor. For example, I usually love all things daikon but their daikon bettarazuke was much too fermented. Texture and flavor were both overwhelming - not sweet or crunchy. The only item I really liked was the koji garlic on the avocado (additional supplement $6). That was flavorful and delicious - wish there was more of that. The cured egg was something soy based but tasted like it was sat in the curing liquid for way too long - not good. The rice itself was honestly terrible; brown rice, but just didn't taste like it was properly cooked. The dashi had no flavor even though it was supposed to be fennel leek apple- it was just extremely sour. We didn't like most of the pickled vegetables, just flavor-wise and texturally. Everything was extremely sour and one-note, with no nuance in flavor besides from that, making it not that palatable as whole. Overall, I wouldn't be back but hey if you really like sour vegetables... $36 per bowl per person, 20% automatic gratuity added. Oh, and it was also difficult to pay; we got up and stood by the iPad for a good 10 minutes until they came over to help us pay to leave.

The reason I come to this one more often is because it's closer to me in the East Bay. They don't have a lot of organic produce and the prices for all the produce is a bit high for what it is. There's a lot of different pastry booths and there's a Semi Freddy's Cafe close by. The Frog Hollow farm has great fruit and pretty good simple pastries. They also offer their fruit preserves on a discount that is much cheaper than in stores or online. Their apricot preserves is one of their best ones and has the least amount of sugar. I come here quite often to get lunch on the weekends. There's also a really nice rotisserie chicken truck that makes amazing rotisserie chicken for about $17 and they also have rotisserie duck and rotisserie pork. They have a lot of roasted vegetables that can come with their rotisserie meat but unfortunately, all their potatoes and vegetables are covered with animal grease so it is not for people watching their cholesterol. It's easy to pick up a whole rotisserie chicken for a lovely Sunday meal and have leftovers for work for a few days. It's better than any rotisserie chicken from the supermarket but will cost about twice as much. However, you get to see them roast your chicken so you know it's very fresh and the skin is crisp.
