Coffee roasters also includes a full service coffee counter and a limited seating area for guests who want to sit and stay. The industrial, shipping container feel is cool--the same feel as a brewery with a small tasting room in the warehouse. Roasting machines are right there. Drip coffee medium roast single origin was bright, well extracted, very nice. Dark was less remarkable. The sit and stay seating area looks cool in a glassed in box at the center of the room, but it's pretty limited in terms of total seats (one single group table and some rail seats), and it acts as a bit of an echo chamber making private conversations pretty impossible. But not bad for a spot of laptop work as needed. read more

Matcha's great - I recommend it hot. I really enjoy their pastries but they tend to run out quite early in the day. Inside's packed on the weekends but you can find a spot after 11. Very industrial vibe. I recommend not sitting at the high top tables - the chairs are incredibly uncomfortable. read more

Spacious and lovely cafe that looks like it was previously a fire station with its welcoming bright red exterior - you won't miss it! They have a couple of sandwiches (egg, veggie, and cheese and egg, bacon, and cheese) and a number of assorted pastries if you're hankering for more than coffee. If you're looking for just a quality cup of coffee, then you'll also love Caffe Umbria! Barista was super friendly and whipped up a super smooth latte with oat milk for me. I visited Caffé Umbria as part of Yelp Cafe Week. I took note of it as well as another cafe within a 3-mile radius from my apartment, so I figured why not visit when I had the spare time. During Yelp Cafe Week, Caffé Umbria, offered 50% off any coffee beverage purchase or coffee bean purchase, which I recieved 50% off proudly after checking in. To my knowledge, your only option for parking is neighborhood parking which really is not bad depending on when you choose to visit. I would imagine that parking can be horrendous at select times and days of the week including with a restaurant like '90 Miles Cuban Cafe' being across the street, but take note of that prior to your visit. After entering Caffé Umbria my thoughts were, "Wow! This is legit!". I have never been in a cafe more legit as this. With similarities to a brewery, the inside feels like a coffee factory combined with a cafe, yet the building exterior will make you think that it is a fire department while driving by, hehe. I visited during morning hours near noon when business just happened to be slow. And post ordering, I kept beating myself up because I did not bring my laptop with me so that I could write inside of my blog, but oh well! It just means that I get to return on a different date, plus try the 'Ciaccolada Calda' that the barista gave me a sample taste of. Describing its taste, I would compare it to a hot chocolate. I have a one track mind because I had already identified what I wanted to order prior to visiting which was the 'Terra Sana blend' based off of its ingredients. And best believe I was dead set on getting it upon ordering, but the sampling of the 'Ciaccolada Calda' gave me an option to try on a different visit. I would imagine that this place can get crowded like any other cafe on certain days and at times during the day, so seating is yet another thing to take in consideration, especially if you are just looking to study, get work done or just enjoy coffee with others. Overall, I enjoyed my visit to Caffé Umbria, the barista was very knowledgeable about coffee entirely as well as the products Caffe Umbria has. If you're in Logan Square and looking for a unique cafe, you can't miss Caffè Umbria (literally)! Their striking, fire engine red building and massive logo will catch your eye and pique your curiosity. Once inside, you very quickly realize this isn't just your average cafe, oh no, this is a cafe + coffee lab + roastery! And since they are a roastery, (you guessed it) the beans that comprise your coffee are roasted IN HOUSE! Another fun fact about Caffè Umbria is that their foyer and coffee lab are actually converted shipping containers that have been painted bright red & yellow! How cool is that?! In addition to the warm, bold colors of this sheet metal, the cafe has an eclectic mix of wood, marble, and glass elements. Okay, enough about their interior design! On to the coffee! My friends and I ordered an array of lattes which came with a square of divine, dark chocolate. It was the best lil' treat that paired perfectly with our coffee. I ordered their cafe latte which delighted me both by its double-hearted art and its smooooth texture. It's creaminess and caramelization absolutely enchanted my tastebuds. Caffè Umbria also sells 7-8 espresso blends in exquisitely designed bags. Side note- many rave over their Gusto Crema, so definitely try that (and all of their blends, honestly). Furthermore, the baristas and staff here are incredibly down-to-earth, knowledgeable, and kind. This place is truly a gem and a haven for all coffee lovers! read more

This place is so cute and delicious! I came out here for the yelp cafe event so sampled a few coffees and really enjoyed the orange nitro - so unique! One of the few times I can drink coffee straight without cream. They have a lot of interesting drinks on their menu that I've never heard of and would love to try. I think I'll make my way to the downtown location since I live in Lincoln park which is hard to get to without a car. read more

Glad I stumbled upon this place- it's the best espresso I've had in Chicago and close to the ones you'll find in Europe. The espresso had a gorgeous crema, and it was served with a small piece of dark chocolate. They also offer complimentary sparkling water to re-hydrate. 5/5 on the espresso experience alone read more

Such a cool place... you have to check it out. Enter Cafe Umbria into what appears to be a very industrial building. It's next to a storage facility and it blends in....you wouldn't know you were walking into a cafe. I've attached a bunch of photos to help paint the picture. What I like is the seating areas inside. They have what feels like different rooms all within one big space. If you want to find a spot to sit and work, this is it. I'd say you'll have privacy if you need it. Half the space is occupied by the coffee roasters. You won't see that in most other coffee shops... Because they don't actually roast it on the spot. That makes this coffee extremely fresh... And it tastes great. Some of the smoothest tasting coffee I've ever had. I love this location and the coffee itself... So I'm sure I'll be visiting again soon. Highly recommend visiting! read more

Umbria has incredible coffee and a wonderful setup. The pastries at this location are also really good. I really liked the Cardamom latte and came back and enjoyed a Shakerato (so good!). The London Fog here was ok on one visit and excellent the second visit. Cappuccinos here are really good as well! Roasted: visited this coffee shop on Christmas Eve an hour before they closed. Incredibly friendly person working the register - really engaged us in how we were doing. Ordered two lattes and didn't get offered for here cups. I get they are closing in an hour but still should be offered. Interesting environment - it's a large space, very open, but little seating, and you can see the roasting process through the glass. Too many clean lines for this to be a comfortable coffee shop to hang out in. They were playing a Disney sound track which doesn't seem to align with the ambiance and then the music turned night club style. My latte was not very good - the espresso was bitter and I think it sat too long before it was used. It was hard to drink even after adding a Splenda. His latte was great though so inconsistency on the part of the barista. I wouldn't go out of my way to come back here. Unroasted: Large industrial building is preset cool to look at. The place is very clean and brand new. The staff was extremely kind and engaging. This place is pretty sweet looking but the seating area is not very inviting. You don't get window so no sunlight. I know Armitage is nothing to look at but it would feel better then inside a warehouse. My coffee was way better than roasted. Once we switched did we realize they weren't consistent. Bright red warehouse, you can't miss it. The atmosphere is cool, but the coffee is even better. I've only tried the iced but it's so good I haven't wanted to stray from my order. It's so smooth and delicious I could drink it all day and it comes with a little chocolate! There is seating inside for when we are allowed to do that again. This place (as expected) was amazing. Great staff and very fun location. Owner if you're listening... it reminded me of victrola on first hill. Your first location down by the train station is very different. However, bravo on this spot! The space is smaller for seating due to the location is mainly filling the operations need. Had a lemon loaf and their standard espresso. Loaf was great, not too sweet and had actual pieces of lemon inside, very good. Espresso as always is amazing. Doesn't burn your throat or stomach with the acid (like a lot of espresso here in Chicago), smooth finish and great to have a little piece of chocolate to end the experience. If I was to ask, I would really enjoy traditional cups as an option. The espresso cups felt very modern compared to the late or cappuccino. Responding to the cafe directly. Firstly - you're bad to your baristas. No cafe staffs a single employee during morning hours to manage the register, food, the bar, and the line. Clearly you've got money - maybe move a few dollars away from foil-pressed packaging and into your service model. Secondly - you scolded a reviewer on here for being put off by the fountain of knowledge your staff has for coffee / craft. If your bar person doesn't know the difference between a 12 and 16 ounce cup, they're not as knowledgeable as you're touting. If they were, they'd have that at front of memory - because anyone who has worked in boutique coffee knows that a 12 ounce espresso drink is already massive, and 16 is Americanized sacrilege. You guys continue to be a joke. All you had to do was be good to your staff and be good to your customers to solidify your position. I'm hoping you close soon. There's more humble shops to visit with better product, and stellar service better fit for Chicago. read more

Came to Umbria this morning for a latte. The space is really open and bright with many windows. The layout seems a tiny bit off but it's a cool concept. I'm not sure if there are two floors to sit but the first floor area has large table and a bar area with chair stools to sit on Coffee was solid and my latte was served in a tall glass verses a cup or mug. Presentation was nice but I like my mugs for a reason. Great latte. Will come back for items to go. read more

You're serving good quality coffee, we get it, and this day and age you're a dime a dozen....and I totally appreciate Umbria Coffee and its roots/history and the fact you are seemingly meticulous about your coffee, products, and traditions. That said you're not curing cancer so you may want to share that w your lofty minded staff. In a City where high quality coffee can be found in so many neighborhoods, esp local/homegrown shops, it's hard for me to come back w the mindset I've exp on the few occasions I've visited. read more

Stopped in for a latte and a iced tea to go. My friend said the tea was really good. The latte tasted like a latte. I think I was expecting cooler latte art, so I was a bit disappointed with what I got. It seems like a nice place to get work done. They have free WiFi, and the password is posted by the register. There was a lot of seating at tables and the coffee bar. There also appears to be an upstairs with more tables, but I didn't take a look. The cafe area is of average size. Most of the warehouse space is devoted to the roasting equipment, but a lot of it is visible from the cafe through large windows. read more

Oh. My. This place over exceeded my expectations. I passed it while driving about a week ago and was intrigued as it is right across from 90 miles Cuban and it has a huge front of the building with tall glass windows. It was night time, but saw it was a cafe and made a mental note to go back... to my surprise, they were part of Yelp's cafe week! Lucky me, I got to go back. Inside is beautiful-- it reminds me of a brewery with all of the machinery where they make their coffee. They also have a huge back area for anyone to work while sipping on their coffee. They have a bunch of different Italian coffee options and the barista was super friendly and willing to explain them all. I am simple, so decided to go with my usual iced latte. And I was SO HAPPY I did. Maybe the best espresso I've had??? It was great. They also have a lunch card which is always favorable. A must try! read more

I haven't had Italian coffee this authentic since I traveled to Italy back in September! My husband and I have deemed this our go-to neighborhood coffee shop (especially since we live not even a block away!). We always have great service (shout out to Maddy and Tony!) and superb coffee (any of their speciality coffees are great). And those little Italian chocolates just make the whole experience complete! Stumbled upon this neat coffee shop in Logan Square. They have ocean containers inside forming the space giving a rustic urban environment. They roast and distribute coffee beans onsite inside the space similar to how a brewery makes beer. There is a small seating area indoors so not a ton of room to have a party at. However, the staff were extremely friendly and made an uber delicious hot chocolate that I'd highly recommend. It came with a small piece of chocolate on the plate to accompany my hot chocolate. They made a neat leaf design in the top of the hot chocolate. I was meeting someone at the coffee shop for business and forgot a pen and piece of paper. The employee there was very kind and went to me few pieces of paper and a pen for my meeting. I will definitely be frequenting the Caffe Umbria more often in the future. read more

I came here during Yelp Cafe Week and had a wonderful experience. I bought some coffee and they were very nice with providing information about it and grinding it. They also have really cute bags with the coffee, which added a nice touch along with the chocolate! I ordered a Nitro Coffee and it tasted complex and refreshing.
