I wanted to like it. I did. But after a few visits, it's just not for me. The first trip, I tried the Matari Tea: Green tea, Himalayan pink salt, milk, and spices, topped with roasted pistachios. Sounds good, right? Alas, it could not have been blander. I couldn't taste any "spices" or even the hint of salt. The profile was that of very watered-down tea mixed with milk, and a ton of pistachios floating on top. Like, barely crushed pistachios. Huge pieces, covering the top of the drink, bobbed around like tiny icebergs, and even they somehow had a toned-down flavor. The drink was definitely a swing and a miss. Fast forward two weeks, and I tried Matari again. This time with a simple cortado. I sat at the table right by the door, and the espresso was pretty good. Solid body, not too bitter. It was on the pricy side ($7+), but I was ok with that. But then, I'm hanging out, sipping my coffee, and I catch a burst of perfume-like scent. I'm shocked, but whatever, I figured someone in heavy perfume walked by, no big deal. A few minutes later, wham, I'm hit in the nose with another burst of perfume. Then, I see it. A slight haze around me. So, not a heavily perfumed woman after all, but an automated air-freshener. After further inspection, I see the unit plugged in on the ground right behind my chair, which sprays up and out on a timer. That's right, an air freshener right next to a table where people consume food and beverages, shooting a mist into the air that slowly rains down onto my head and table, and into my coffee. I ended up tossing the last few sips of my cortado, as I could taste the scented whatever-it-was in my cup. I'd have gone to the counter and asked for a new one, but I was so over my visit by then, I just opted to get out. The staff aren't very friendly. Not rude, but they don't give off a welcoming aura, and I didn't feel like trying to explain the issue. Lastly, can we talk about their little "your order is up" beepers? We've all seen them. The little electronic things that blink and make a noise when your order is ready, so you can go snag it from the counter. When I think of a coffee shop, I think quiet and peaceful, or perhaps a bit louder, with bustling people and well-paired music. At Matari, it's an insane BEEP BEEP BEEP that goes off every few minutes when an order is up. I get it, you don't want to bring the food out to your customers. But does it really need to feel like an airport Chili's? It's a bummer, because Matari is beautiful inside. It's clean, it's chic, and its location is at a notable crossroads in Skokie with plenty of parking, leaving it extremely convenient. They've even got an easy-to-use website, which so many coffee shops simply do not have. There aren't a lot of coffee shops in this particular part of town, which is why I so, so very much wanted to love Matari. But subpar drinks? Air freshener spray intrusions? Frequent and obnoxious beeping? I tried. I'm sorry. I just can't. read more

Beautiful chic coffee spot for a fancy break, I brought my daughter here for her first latte art and we were not disappointed. It's almost impossible to choose from the decadent pastry cabinet gleaming with shiny fruits and trendy filled croissant rolls. I've been a handful of times when I need a little extra glam for a coffee break, or wowing out of town guests. Be warned, the coffee is very strong! Slightly too sweet for my taste, wish I knew that to adjust the sweet level. Coffee's like $5.5 pre-tax/tip. My only complaint was it's in a to-go cup. I think the coffee would look better with the nuts and petals if in a mug. I also got the pistachio cream cake. Cake's good, it's around or slightly above average. Can't remember the price, somewhere around $8-9 I think. There's a great selection of pastry and sweets, as shown in the picture. They looked pretty, and I ended up packing two other pastries to go. This place was trendy and the staff were kind and helpful at what to recommend. My only problem was being served in to go cups when I was dining in. They stated they didn't have any clean mugs. That to me was not acceptable especially at a coffee shop. The guy did try to find some mugs and found one for my order. Ordinarily, I use the phrase: "the vibes are immaculate." Yes, though for Matari a more appropriate and accurate description is "luxurious!" Marble, with black, white, and gold. Are any Bruins fans in the house?! They avoid yelling out names with the little pagers. Finally, everything is pristine! Just as I was about to ask them to wipe a table, there was already a person with spray. For food and caffeine, I ordered a Honey Cake and a Cortado. The honey cake was done superbly. Fresh, lots of delicious layers, a splendid balance between moist and dry, and a gentle not overpowering sweetness too. Something I generally love is their selection of pastries is awesome! Rather than having variations on a theme of huge carb and sugar-heavy sweets, the ones here are smaller and very well varied with inspiration from European, Japanese, and other cultures. As for the Cortado, it too was phenomenal! Matari does not confuse lattes and cortados, and thus the result was strong, but without the bite of full-strength espresso, just as a Cortado should be. The coffee itself was top-notch also, with just the right balance of bitterness and acid. In terms of prices, while not the cheapest place around, the costs are 100% in line with what you get. Finally, the service was welcoming, polite, and quick! P.S. They are open late for those who want to wind down their night with something sweet and a beverage to go with it. Either that, or night owls who need caffeine and sugar, yet want to avoid Starbucks or Dunkin. Thus, Matari quickly earned itself a spot as one of the top cafes in Chicagoland. I would give Matari 4.5 out of 5 stars, so I'm rounding to 5 based on service and ambiance! I heard about their fruit mousse cakes online, so we knew we had to stop by to check it out. The cafe is immaculate and service was very friendly. The person who took our order was patient as he explained the different pastries in the case. I wish they had signs explaining what each pastry was so I could have decided while waiting in line. We ended up sharing an iced pistachio latte (delicious and 10/10!), the pistachio cheesecake (10/10!), and the strawberry mousse cake (7/10 - a subtle sweetness, great texture, but needed more cake or crust inside as it was mostly whipped cream and the shell). The mousse cake was $12.00, which felt steep considering it was mostly whipped cream, even though it was obviously beautiful. We would definitely come back for the coffee and to try more menu items! Easy parking in a lot in front. There's classical music being piped outside so even though it's just in a strip mall, the luxury experience starts before entering. The exterior has lovely landscaping and an elegant sign. Even with the exterior, I was unprepared for the sumptuous elegance inside. It's far larger than I expected, with plenty of seating, and on a Saturday at noon, a decent number of people enjoying their coffee, sweets, and the calming music. No line but I was allowed to take my time surveying all the sweets. An employee stood waiting for me but without hassling me for my order. There don't seem to be many hearty savory options, mostly decadent sweets. Fusion between French and middle eastern. They have petite fours, croissants, but also lots of pistachio based sweets, and Dubai chocolate. When I eventually decided on two giant croissants, he offered to heat them for me which seemed a lovely extravagance. They were good - flaky and soft. Not rave worthy but solid marks. We also shared a Dubai chocolate cheesecake. My drink was good but really really sweet. Next time I'll ask for half sugar or try it with more milk. My friend said her drink was good but different. I was curious about this place so I decided to go with my fiancé on a Sunday for some afternoon coffee and baked goods. I got the Matari drink, iced and medium size. My fiancé got the Jubani coffee, which came out really hot and needed a while before it cooled down. We also shared a Dubai chocolate cheesecake, which was probably the highlight of our time at the cafe. There were a lot of people at the cafe on Sunday, a lot of people had to order to go because there were no seats available. The Matari drink was extremely sweet, I wish I had known beforehand and made sweetness adjustments because I had to wait for the ice to melt and dilute the drink. My fiancé's coffee was just ok. It had a nice roasted nutty flavor but there's not a lot of depth to the coffee. The cheesecake was our favorite item and we would probably come back for the desserts. Our total was $24 for 2 drinks and the cheesecake, which was pretty pricey. The inside of the cafe was very clean and aesthetic. It's nice that they provide small bottled water as well. All the staff were very efficient and friendly. Friendly and helpful staff took our order, they initially forgot one of our pastries but it was a quick fix, it was a weekend and they were pretty busy so I'm not mad about it. The menu offers espresso, coffee, chai, mojitos, and various pastries in their bakery case. We tried: +the Matari Latte +a Chai Latte +a Dubai chocolate +and, a pistachio tulip cup The drinks were just okay; we did request them to be served extra hot, but they came out lukewarm/cold at best. The cup was definitely on the larger end, so you do get a nice generous serving. The desserts were delicious! The Dubai chocolate had that great crispy texture, but being super addicting at the same time! The pistachio cup that was filled with a light delicious cream was also yummy, and the 'petals' that were made out of chocolate added a nice crunch to it. I've driven past here a few times and it caught my eye. I have only had Yemeni coffee at the coffee shop on Touhy, so I was intrigued to try this one out. I came here on a Wednesday morning around 7am. I was going to order one of their house coffees with cardamom, but they were out of the medium roast. I opted for a Turkish coffee instead, as I'm not someone who likes to drink anything sweet or creamy in the morning, so I didn't want any of the specialty drinks. There are two size options for the Turkish coffee $6 for a cup, or $9 for a pot. I was expecting the $6 to be a medium or a large cup based on the prices of other drinks, but it was a small....which is pricey, especially because the grounds at the bottom (which is traditional in Turkish coffee) were about 3/4 of an inch thick, so the actual amount of coffee was minimal. I will say it was definitely very strong, though -- I don't really drink caffeinated coffee that much anymore, and I was buzzing until about 11:30pm from the small Turkish coffee, so it did its job. All of the coffees are on the expensive side, even just for their house coffees, etc. (smalls are around $4.50, medium $5.50, and large $6.50, plus $0.75 for those of us who don't/can't drink dairy, and an extra dollar if you want it iced. An Americano is $5, which is a lot given that all the independent coffee shops I've gone to in the area max out at around $3.75 for a large Americano). The fancier lattes/espresso-based drinks start around $6. I won't be getting the Turkish coffee again, and I'm not sure if I would get one of their house coffees, either, given the cost. I make a huge carafe of medium roast with cardamom at home every day, so I don't need to pay $5+ for it somewhere else. But, their specialty drinks do sound incredible, and my neighbors have gone here several times and said they're really good. I would definitely come here later in the day to meet friends and try a specialty drink that I can't find elsewhere, like the pistachio latte. Also, their pastries look insanely good, although there weren't prices on anything in the display case so I'm almost afraid to ask. I do hope they do well, though. It's nice to have a new coffee shop in the area and something a bit different from the two Starbucks that are on Dempster. read more

The interior is beautiful and definitely photo-worthy. I ordered a few items: the strawberry cold foam matcha, the Matari (coffee with pistachio), pistachio chocolate cake, and pistachio cheesecake. I didn't realize how much pistachio I ordered until everything came out! The Matari was my favorite--smooth, flavorful, and the pistachio paired so well with the coffee. I'll definitely be ordering that again. The cheesecake was nice, not too sweet, which I appreciated. The chocolate cake also leaned less sweet, which I liked, but overall, the cakes didn't wow me. I was expecting a bit more flavor. The only real disappointment was the strawberry cold foam matcha. The cold foam tasted very artificial, and the color was an oddly bright fuchsia pink. There was so much foam that it completely overpowered the matcha--I could barely taste it. I gave it a fair try (about a third of the cup), but I ended up throwing it out. I don't recommend it with the strawberry cold foam, though I'd be willing to try the matcha plain next time. I paid close to $50 for everything. Not unreasonable, but for the quality and portions, I think it's a little on the pricey side. Overall, a beautiful space with some hits and misses--worth trying, but I'll be more selective with what I order next time. read more

I asked certain questions and look at the bottle if it's friendly like kosher gluten-free and all that. It was way too sweet, hence it was a caramel macchiato. It doesn't have a smooth taste and it was not very flavourful of the caramel. It was more like a milk drink that messed up on itself, and it's overloaded with too much sugar. Got the green tea ice green tea, and it was still too sweet even asking no syrup. When you them not to add syrup, still add syrup, so I don't know where the miscommunication is with the shop. I'm not surprised if it less than a year after this. Whatever milk you get besides whole milk, they will charge another $.75-$.80 for non-dairy. So if you go in and ask for nondairy is gonna be overly charged even for 2%, not fat or any other type of milk besides hole, they will still charge you. They said that is their system and that's how it is. So this place is basically overcharging your drink, rather just go to Starbucks where you can get alternative milk. Overall, I will give this coffee shop, not even five star or one star will be minus 100. Just be aware if your drink cost 5 bucks with tax they will add additional charges that does NOT make sense. Even no syrup or little ice, or any alternative milk or something they still add additional charges. read more

Lines were out the door! I've been here so many times since they've opened and gotten all their hot coffee and tea drinks. My favorite is the adeni! Drove by Dempster and this cafe was eye-catching because it was so well lit inside and out. There were pillars of flames that warmed up the guests outside the chill weather for those who wanted to sit on the outside patio. Coming in, the aesthetic was modern and open. There were quite a few tables inside but all of them were full. If you wanted to come here for a quiet study time, this wouldn't be the spot since the music and people were loud. Anyways, I decided to get the pistachio latte and cheesecake. This had got to be the most expensive latte I've gotten ever for $7. The taste was nice and the pistachio flavor was subtle. The cheesecake was decent and every bite had pistachio pieces. Overall, I paid $16+ with tax for a drink and a slice of dessert. Was it worth the price? Not sure because while I enjoyed what I got, it's pretty steep. Even more expensive than Starbucks! The ambiance is amazing very Weill designed interior. Service is great and Employees are kind. I went here for desserts and coffee with my family and everything did not disappoint. So the coffee shop seems to be centered around a pistachio-flavored theme. I got a pistachio iced latte and a pistachio cheesecake. Both were delicious. I have to say I wish the coffee had not been as sweet. However, if you have a sweet tooth, you're going to love it here! My chocolate bar was everything and unless I find somewhere else that sells the chocolate, I will be back for a few extra bars! They don't have this kind of culture in boring Woodstock, IL. I stumbled upon their beautifully crafted desserts on Instagram, and they immediately drew me in. So, I decided to take my family--who lives nearby--for a coffee outing, and we were all super impressed. The ambiance is rich and classy with a strong Middle Eastern vibe that makes you feel like you've stepped into somewhere special. They offer a wide variety of unique coffees and teas. I went with the Yemeni tea with milk--it had a soothing, herbal flavor that felt like a warm hug for the soul. We also tried the mocha and cappuccino, both perfectly balanced--not too strong, not too sweet. Even the smaller sizes came in generous portions! As for desserts--wow. We tried the flan cake (yes, we ordered it for the looks, but it tasted just as good!) and the honeycomb bread, which is a must try. The combo of cream cheese, soft bread, and honey was divine. I loved that their desserts weren't overly sweet; I was expecting them to be because of how stunning they looked, but they nailed the flavor without going overboard.
