Step into this much heralded eatery in El Centro, and you are instantly transported to a colonial oasis of hearty food, vibrant art and cheerful live music. The rajas con crema and conchas here are nostalgic, well executed standouts. The tamarindo agua fresca here turned BF into an addict. The menu is huge and showcases many Mexican classics from across the country. Worth stopping by if you're exploring the Zócalo area and want to take a break to refuel and rest for a bit in a more tranquil environment.
The good: We came on a weekday without reservations and got seated immediately. The space is beautiful and it's super cool to see the stained glass ceilings and waitresses in old-fashioned garb. Ambience is definitely a key plus to this restaurant. I got the dinner special which came with dessert (rice pudding). I tried the beef mole, a meatball soup and my husband tried a chile verde beef dish. I got a large tamarind juice which was enjoyable. It had fruit remnants in it too. My husband had a mezcal cocktail that was nicely made. The bad: The cheese was so thick and chewy in the quesadilla. The food was overall pretty good but not outstanding. The soup was salty. The bread was dry. Our water pitcher had a few tablespoons of water in it. The interesting: If you're getting a quesadilla don't forget to mention "with cheese" if that's what you're expecting. It doesn't come standard with cheese. This restaurant is a culturally historical site and located on one of the oldest streets in CDMX.
This is my favorite restaurant in Mexico City . The service is outstanding and professional, They have so many amazing dishes that you can try anything and you will be satisfied. They also have great dessert and coffee. The ambiance is old fashioned elegance. I like the art and seating style, Great restaurant all around.
The cafe service and ambiance reminds you of an American Mexican restaurant experience. My friend and went during lunch on a Saturday. We were able to walk in and be seated immediately. The restaurant had a band that sang traditional songs beautifully. We ordered soup, tamales, and enchiladas that was delicious!! The only reason it received a 4 is because the rice was dry and chewy.
Este restaurante estaba muy precioso! I really enjoyed my experience. The ambiance is amazing. The place is beautifully decorated. I recommend sitting on the top floor if possible because it can be a bit crowded downstairs. Service was impeccable and they were pretty accepting of my terrible Spanish. The food was amazing and came out hot. My margarita was so great that I had to have 2. This is is definitely somewhere I will dine again.
A taste of old Mexico! Friendly service and happy customers. We had the chili relleno, a chicken dish, a shrimp dish with a spicy salad dish with avocado and peppers rounded out with Sangria. A cultural must do!
The ambience and service 5 stars. The food unfortunately was horrible. Even the strawberry shake was bad. The bread they brought out was cold. The agua de sandia was good. Also spent more than a fancy tex mex restaurant in the US but the food was mediocre. Save yourself some real money and skip this place. Love the band Cafe Tacuba who named themselves after this redstaurant but food was NOT IT and so expensive...I dont mind paying good money when my pallate leaves with joy.
Café de Tacuba is one of those classic Mexico City spots with a lot of history and personality. The building and interior feel historic, and the whole experience is very traditional. When the mariachis are playing, the energy really comes alive and being able to request songs makes it even better. It's lively, sometimes a little busy, but that's part of the charm. If you want food with atmosphere and a bit of legendary backstory, this is a great place to check out.
This restaurant is halfway between the Zocalo and National Museum of Art and is where I had dinner on a Sunday night in late January. I got in without a reservation after about a 5 minute wait. It's an attractive restaurant inside with a Mexican theme, of course, and a mariachi band roving amongst the diners. They had a 5 course menu of the day for 410 pesos that I went with. First to arrive was a complimentary bread basket with 4 rolls and the first course of fruit cocktail consisting of pineapple, cantaloupe and watermelon chunks. The second course was a small bowl of chicken broth. Then the third course of Mexican rice arrived. The main fourth course of pollo almendrado then appeared. It was a large boneless chicken breast covered in a brown sauce with sliced almonds on top. Then the third chicken was so tender I cut it with my fork. No knife needed. This was very good tasting chicken and filling too. Finally to finish, the fifth course consisted of small whole peaches in a bowl. With fresh fruit consisting of 2 courses and chicken broth for a third course this was a light meal up until the chicken arrived. However, I enjoyed everything and the table service was prompt and friendly. I like the ambience and decor of this restaurant and it does have an extensive menu. Prices were very reasonable.
Great restaurant! I came here to celebrate a milestone birthday of mine and my family, who live in the area, recommended this place as they've been before. Of course a Yelp elite I had to scope out the reviews. The reviews were great and I really liked the decor inside so I made this my birthday dinner spot! We arrived around 8:30 on a Tuesday (A week away from Christmas) and it was moderately busy. We were sat right away and they even gave us an option of tables which was nice. Right when we say down they took our drink order and we were given fresh bread. I thought this was a little odd at a Mexican restaurant but hey who doesn't love bread at dinner time. We ate them up, they were good rolls! As we waited for our drinks there were Mariachis singing in the restaurant. This was nice, you can have them sing at your table, if remember correctly the first song is gratis!(free). When it was time to take our order I decided to go with something different. I ordered the Pollo en pipián Verde. It was absolutely delicious. The chicken breast was cooked to perfection and I can go as far as saying it's the best cooked chicken breast I ever had! The portion was super generous too! In addition to my main I ordered a side of guacamole and beans with chips! Both were very delicious! And for my birthday dessert I ordered the Oreo cheesecake, very good! I would definitely recommend this restaurant. I will say as my criticism is the service could use some polishing up. It was great but I dislike asking for plates to be cleared when they're just sitting there. This restaurant is a Mexico City staple, and I want the service to match the ambiance and cuisine. If the servers were a bit more attentive to clearing plates and asking if anything else is needed it would be great!
This is a MUST whenever we are in CDMX. This historic restaurant never disappoints. The service is great and the food is even better with an extensive menu. The ambiance is true to Mexico and comfortable. I highly recommend Cafe de Tacuba.
We were seated immediately about 1:30PM. Even though it was about half full, it was still noisy but still pleasant. Two of us ordered appetizers and an entree each. We should have skipped the appetizers. They were larger than expected. I could have just had my appetizer.The red snapper fish, my entree, seemed much larger than the photos. It was huge, to be honest. Enough for 2 people. The 2nd entree, Special Tacuba Style Chicken breast could have been shared also. We both also had 1 none alcoholic drink each. Our total bill was $1,195 pesos(about $58 US dollars), not to pricey for CDMX. This place is very near a metro stop(Allende). I would come during daylight. The neighborhood is a little sketchy, lots of hawkers in area.
So Mexico City is a city that is truly a foodie's paradise-One can't throw a rock without hitting a Michelin rated restaurant. Another thing this city has is very inexpensive spots you can eat,like pop ups or stands that serve such high quality food at very cheap prices. The third thing I found about this city is where this restaurant fits in-They have restaurants that are historic,that opened over 100 years ago-Cafe de Tacuba fits in that category,having opened in 1912. This restaurant is located in Centro Historico-just a few blocks from Zocalo.Its location is a very busy touristy part of Mexico City. When we arrived there was a 30 minute wait,but once we walked in it was obvious why as it was truly a work of art in there. The walls were adorned with amazing paintings and murals and interior designs elements that transported you back to Mexico in the 1950s and earlier. It was gorgeous. I don't want to call it a fancy place with all the stigma that sometimes represents but it was a fancy place without all the stuffiness of a fancy place. It was a very warm and welcoming place to dine at. There was a lady walking around with a platter full of conchas and churros that one could indulge in while waiting their main meal. I had to get a churro-it was so delicious. We also got chicken tortilla soup-it was so rich and tasty with the perfect blend of Mexican seasonings. I had a pretty good cafe con leche as well-you could really taste the high quality coffee beans they use in their coffees compared to what I'd been getting all trip in the streets. Now when you visit this restaurant and you could only try one dish-that dish begins and ends with Enchiladas Tacuba(355 pesos/$20.35) That's what I got and it was awesome.Its basically a chicken enchilada dish with a creamy spinach based sauce topped with cheese-flavor bomb to the fullest. 9.5/10 Item I wouldn't clarify this as an inexpensive meal compared to other places we visited in Mexico City,but I would call this place an incredible dining experience where one can just feel the importance of the building one is having this meal. Heck Diego Rivera had his wedding reception here in 1922. I for sure would recommend anyone who has the pleasure of visiting Mexico City,must add Cafe de Tacuba to their itinerary-it's such a rich experience. read more

The tamales and chilaquiles verdes con huevos y bistec were okay. The tamales were a little dry, while the chilaquiles verdes con huevos y bistec were bland and could have used more seasoning. Customer service could be improved, as it was hard to get a hold of our waiter at times. All in all, worth visiting for the ambiance, but the food did not match the experience. read more
Been waiting to come here for a few years, and we finally made it for dinner -- WOW. The historic interior is absolutely stunning, with such a beautiful old-world vibe. The atmosphere was lively and fun, especially with the live mariachis bringing so much energy to the space. It truly felt like an experience, not just a meal. The food was traditional upscale Mexican. We only tried two dishes, but everything was beautifully prepared and full of flavor. Honestly though, the real showstopper was dessert... hello, pan elote ice cream! Can we please take a pint home next time? Service was completely on point -- attentive, polished, and welcoming. The wine list was solid, and I had the Tacuba cocktail made with jamaica and mezcal... absolutely delicious. We'll definitely be back and highly recommend visiting this iconic, historic restaurant. I usually stop by this place when visiting CDMX. It was no different from a week ago. The service was wonderful, helpful and they did help with questions and suggestions and even a drink I wanted that they don't have. The restaurant itself has a nice environment. The food itself was a let down. I ordered the asada plate with vegetables. I thought it would've had good seasoning. The vegetables had more flavor than the asada meat. It was disappointing this time that I went. read more

We loved Mexico City and Café de Tacuba was one of the main reasons why. From the time you walk in the door, it was just beauty with the traditional decor and excited energy from all the local people having breakfast. The restaurant is two-story and large, but the tables are close together so you have this feeling of walking into a family gathering. The servers walk around with platters of special breads and juices, and everyone has a smile on their face. There serving costumes were so cute and they tried very hard to speak English with us, but I had no expectations since we were in their country. Our Spanish is terrible so we spent a little bit of time on Google translate. All the servers were very patient with us which we really appreciated. As I said, the restaurant was packed, but within a couple of minutes of walking in we were guided to our seats in a beautiful part of the restaurant. It didn't seem like anybody ever had it to wait, but it seemed so full with all the energy I just can't get over that. We ordered our cappuccinos and of course in Mexico you always get fresh squeezed orange juice, which I have become addicted to, and then we ordered our food Chilaquiles Rojo and eggs Estrella. Nice interior, despite the plethora of religious statues looming over you while you ate. We got a number of things. The taquitos were probably our favorite. The pork tamale wasn't bad either. The quesadilla was more like an empanada and was just OK. The enchiladas in a salsa verde were pretty bad. We each only had a couple of bites and gave up. There was a 20 minute wait at about noon on Sunday. So, a bit nicer than the taco joints we went to the rest of the week but we enjoyed the taco places a lot more. read more

The food was pretty good got the enchiladas! Only thing is it had a lot of sauce which over powered it! The bread they give is soooo good the orchata was tasty as well! I also ordered a chicken tamale it was big, but very tasty ! The inside is pretty, and the workers are very welcoming! ¡La comida estaba bastante buena, conseguí las enchiladas! ¡Lo único es que tenía mucha salsa que lo sobrealimentó! ¡El pan que dan es tan bueno que la orchata también estaba sabrosa! Classic experience in the heart of Mexico City. This restaurant has good, traditional Mexican food, including a fixed price lunch menu. Waitstaff wears old-fashioned uniforms. They are attentive and communicate well about the food. The ambience is added to by a ton of varied Mexican art, either portraits of Mexicans or by Mexican artists. read more

This place is good! The mole verde is really good! I'm very picky with my rice, and the rice was very good tasting. The enchiladas were okay. I was disappointed, they could've been better. The mezcalitos were very good as well. The service was good. Our waiter was friendly. The place is beautiful, very colonial looking. Will I go back? I might! To listen and pay for 4-5 songs! read more
Had a great brunch here with a few friends. The menu is extensive and my enchiladas were great. The hot chocolate was also very good and the table side pastries were fresh and delicious. The service was great and the interior was rather rustic. Definitely a must try if you're in the area. read more

Ahh Café de Tacuba! Take me back! I don't have one bad thing to say about this place - 5 star comida, service, and ambiance! I had my first chiles en nogada there and would highly recommend them! The wait staff were very attentive and the ambiance was very vibrant and alive! It's not the place to go if you're sensitive to sound or looking for a place to have a more intimate conversation. read more

Lets start with the waiting line.. we waited outside for 40 mns.. no problem.. we figured that many people can't be wrong!!! Wrong!!!! They gave us a seat literally in front of the bathrooms on the 2nd floor. The margaritas are great my wife order the carne asada plate and I order the chicken breast plate. The carne asada was way under cooked and she couldn't even cut it with a knife!!! The meat was made of rubber and it was crazy cus it was as thin as a napkin. My chicken breast was so dry that literally cut a small piece and dunked it on my margarita just to soften it up cus I couldn't swallow it. The beans and rice that came with it was old and cold. My wife did finished the rubber meat cus she was hungry but I literally left the full chicken on the plate. I ate the beans and rice made beans tacos with the 3 cold tortillas they brought. The bill was $75-80 dollars plus tip. We orde 2 more margaritas so total of 4 margaritas and 2 horrible plates. Now the place inside is beautiful but I notice people go here for the pictures and if you like Mole which we definitely don't care for it. So maybe the Mole is good i wouldn't know. To me the place is overrated just like all the other High end restaurants in Mexico city historic area!! Nothing authentic all made for Europeans and people that don't know authentic Mexican food!! You'll be better off eating street tacos for $2 dollars ($40 pesos!! Taste better and cheap!! My opinion and hope it helps!! Good luck. read more
