The restaurant itself was beautiful and the presentation of the food was gorgeous. The prices were high which can be expected at a place like this. What I didn't like was when my husband was served the wrong beer and the server rather than taking it away and giving him the right one left it on the table and then later tried to charge us for it, It's okay that he made a mistake but it was his mistake as my husband clearly ordered the amber ale and was given a porter. It took ten minutes to take the charge off the bill. It was a bad way to end the evening,
Started off with a maracuya mezcal (Convite coyote) which was very delicious and smooth. Not too smoky. To eat, I ordered the filete nacionale with chipotle amor which was delicious! Medium rare. I tried the pulpos en su tinta and the chicken mole and both were so so tasty. Service was frantic but very good. This spot was very busy for Christmas Day.
If you are downtown in the historic center this is the restaurant to go to. It is beautiful and surrounded by wonderful shops. We started with the classic guacamole which was really good. Then I had the Pescado Tikin which was a treat because I have never had snook before. It was delicious.
I was told by multiple people that this is a great restaurant that we must visit. We were happy to try it while walking back from the Zocala back to the hotel and were thrilled that they were able to seat us despite not having a reservation. It's a spectacular, unique ambience; check out the pictures. Unfortunately, it was not a great visit. We got to try several firsts. Fish eggs and my first Chile De Nogada. Both were OK. The part that soured the visit was the service. Except for the person who checked us in, everyone seemed sour. Pass.
If I had one word to describe this place it would be beautiful! From the food to the environment, eating here felt like entering an an artist's experience. The trees were gorgeous and eat plate was put together with precision and perfection. The service was very fast and helpful. Bonus points for the complimentary tomato salad we received which was refreshing and delicious. As for the rest of the meal, I can't say it was the most delicious thing we ate in CDMX. Truthfully, the tamale lacked flavor and had a strange texture. The enchiladas also didn't have much chicken filling and had way too much sauce. What helps, though, is that the sauce was absolutely incredible tasting and you can tell the restaurant only uses the best ingredients. Overall, I'd definitely come back to try their other dishes and for the exciting dining experience, but it probably wasn't my favorite place I've tried in CDMX.
While it was disappointing that none of the mole negro options were available, the dishes we did order were excellent--both the presentation and portion sizes were spot on. Unfortunately, the experience was significantly undermined by terrible service from our waiter. He was neither friendly nor welcoming, and at times made us feel like we were an inconvenience. When present, he rushed us; when we asked for more time, he disappeared for far too long. He never checked in about our meals or asked whether we needed anything else. When he finally returned after we had finished our entrees to take our dessert orders, I requested the famous hot chocolate. His response was condescending, and then he told us it wasn't available. Oddly, about 10 minutes later, we saw the hot chocolate cart pass by for another table behind us. I asked another server if hot chocolate was still being served--she confirmed it was, and even offered to bring some to our table. We declined and requested the check instead. This made it crystal clear our waiter had lied and intentionally withheld it from us for reasons I still don't understand, as we were polite throughout. When he brought the check and credit card terminal, I told him I would not be leaving a tip--only the second time I've ever done that in all my years of dining internationally. He reacted with visible anger and left abruptly without providing a paper receipt. This was supposed to be a special birthday dinner, but the level of service fell far below expectations for a restaurant of this caliber. I would not return based on this experience.
Beautiful courtyard with delicious food in el centro histórico! Azul histórico is tucked away in a beautiful tree-filled courtyard off a busy street in mexico city's historic center. We had been recommended this place by some friends, and it definitely lived up to the hype! The service was great, and food was delicious. To start, we got the escamoles (ant eggs!) on a recommendation from our server, and learned that ant eggs are considered "mexican caviar". They came with guacamole and tortillas to make little tacos, and it was delicious!! the escamoles were buttery and soft, like nothing i'd ever tasted. For my entree I got the mole negro enchiladas, which were also great! Will definitely come back here when i'm next in CDMX.
I had such high hopes for this place and didn't want the overall low reviews to deter me from trying it out because most of the photos on review sites have been very beautiful! But, I was disappointed. First off, most reviewers and Yelpers were accurate when they said service is terrible. It might depends on the day too maybe but our waiter/waiters were alright. My bf speaks Spanish and that did help a lot but our food took forever and I think our waiter forgot to put in my entre. Not to say, he was stressed looking the whole time and was mumbling to himself the whole time! I thought that was funny I just hope he was not too stressed out. It wasn't even that many people dining yet, it was right when they just opened. We got one of the cocktails, and it was horrible. Super sweet and had an artificial taste. It was one of the cocktails that the waiter recommended. Food wise, the seafood soup was okay, I think the red snapper was the best best dish out of all. My bf got super bad food poisoning from here either from the fish ceviche or the cocktail or his red snapper.. But his red snapper was cooked so the only raw thing was the fish ceviche.. I only had a few bites of it so I was fine but. If I were in el Centro again I would never come here. I would just stop by to shop around and take photos because it is located inside a beautiful hacienda but I would not come back again for either food or drinks!
Beautiful ambiance and delicious food. Our attentive server made our visit to Azul an amazing experience. The tortilla soup served in a gorgeous Talavera dish was out of this world. Tasty drinks and unmatched panuchos and a well seasoned ribeye for dinner will be hard to replicate! We will be back on our next visit to Mexico City!
We loved everything about this place! Besides being a beautiful restaurant, the food, drinks, and dessert were delicious. Unfortunately, I did not get a picture of my husbands steak, but it tasted as great as it looked. I wish I could remember our waiters name. He was very friendly and attentive. Our reservation was at 7pm but since we were in the neighborhood we tried our luck and they were able to accommodate us at 5:45. After dinner we went upstairs for a drink and were treated very well by a friendly waiter. We've had our share of unfriendly waiters in Mexico City believe me! We left Azul feeling content, happy, and full! Thank you.
If the waiter doesn't act peeved and keep their humor while I try to communicate with a translate App/English/ pointing, the place earned a star, IMO. Our 2 waitstaff did exactly that. We 2 were here for lunch, about 1:30PM with reservations. It wasn't crowded at all. I had a bowl of soup that had 5 seafoods(shrimp, clams, calamari, scallops and I forget the last one). The base would be delicious without the seafood, just plain. The seafood complemented the base though. We shouldn't have added the classic Guacamole. It was enough Guacamole for 4 but we didn't want to be wasteful :-), so we ate it all. The waitstaff allowed us to eat at a leisurely pace and that was good. If this place is less than it used to be, according to some reviewers, I suppose my expectations are too low, I dunno. It's one of the best so called tourist traps I ever ate at, IMHO. I recommend you try it.
This location is beautiful--in the courtyard of a historical building amidst bustling night life. Dining under a pruned treescape and candle-lit lanterns was an experience like no other. Service was friendly and incredibly responsive (including pulling up the recipe list to make sure of allergies). The food was great. For starters, the guacamole clasico and sopa de tortillas were mind blowing. Kid you not, best tortilla soup and Guac I've ever had. This set up nearly doomed the main dishes because I think it was an incredibly hard show to follow; however, the main dishes were still great. We had the classic duck dish, enchiladas, and shrimp. All 3 were great, the mole was slightly sweet with depth. I'd come here again for the appetizers alone.

Out of the three Azul restaurants in Mexico City, Azul Histórico is located in one of the most beautiful patios with lush trees and chandeliers hanging from the branches. This spot is perfect for a date night but the food was just okay. I liked everything we tried, except for the fish which was a bit dry. Service could be improved though, or maybe it was just our server. She was pretty short with us and cleaned our plates quickly (which I normally wouldn't mind but I was just getting used to the slower pace of Mexico City, where dining can take as long as you want it to). Then when the bill came, she demanded a 15% or 20% tip, when every other place we had been to ASKED if we wanted to tip and started at 10%. This was a bit of a turnoff and left a bad taste in our mouths as we left. I had lunch at Azul Centro Histórico (they have three locations) with my mom and brother a week or so ago when we were visiting Mexico City. I'd eaten at their Condesa location on a prior visit to Mexico City and it's beautiful, but this location really blew me away. You eat under a canopy of trees with lanterns hanging overhead. It's really stunning. The service was great throughout, too. My brother and I shared their panuchos de cochinita pibil (small corn tortillas filled with black beans, topped with cochinita pibil) and their camarones enchipoclados (shrimp with garlic, chipotle, tamarind, and olive oil, served with arroz de fiesta), which were both good. My mom, who is vegan, had plenty of options to choose from (their menu uses two little leaves to show which dishes are vegan or can be veganized) and chose a dish from their special mango menu - mango salad (slices of mango, organic lettuces, avocado, jicama, and red onion, and served with basil dressing) - which she enjoyed. They offer a great beverage program, and I enjoyed a glass of wine with my lunch. We had a reservation for 1 pm or so on a Sunday, and a reservation is a good idea on the weekends in particular. It was a little busy throughout our mealtime. The food and wine were good, but the atmosphere was even better. It's a special place for a fancy/upscale meal if you're touristing around Centro Histórico. read more

This place used to be authentic but it has become a tourist trap. Food is barely OK but way overpriced. Service is slow and totally disorganized (I ordered a bottle of water to 3 different waiters until the 4th one finally brought it to me). The decoration and music are nice though. read more

This restaurant was beautiful and the food was surprisingly delicious. My only complaint would be that the server complained about the tip so we left more . Which is a bit wild to me since we tipped well. But overall it's a good restaurant. read more

Exceptional meal from start to finish - the ambiance is so beautiful. Our service was attentive and personable, even down to wine recommendations. Short walk from the Zocolo. I'm not sure what I liked more, the smoky mezcal, the sweet mole or the hot chocolate made to order at our table. So glad we found this place- this was the Mexico City meal I had been wanting! read more

We came here for dinner on a Thursday night and the ambiance of the outdoor seating was amazing. The food however was not my fav. We started off with 3 types of guacamole with various toppings. Chiccaron, ant larva, and crickets. Adventurous to say the least but the guacamole itself was lacking in flavor. I tried their legendary mole and duck mole and honestly I think I'm not a mole fan but glad i gave it a shot. The legendary mole came with chicken but it was pretty dry. The tortillas were fresh and good. I tried my friend's chipotle enchiladas and those were good, should've gotten that. The duck wontons were also tasty, but only after we drenched and dipped it in the extra chipotle cream sauce. It was a pricey dinner and for what I tried, it left a lot to be desired. Our friend who recommended it really loves it, so maybe it was just an off day or something. read more

We had heard about this restaurant and found it as we walked. Beautiful inside but not as easy to see from the outside. Gabriel was our server. He did a great job helping us choose the right items and the right margaritas. (Perfect) The food was amazing. We had the Chiles en Nogada. It was unexpectedly good. We Highly recommend enjoying a meal or several here. Great service and for those few English speaking patrons? They made us feel at home. The courtyard trees were beautifully lite for Independence Day. Just a wonderful experience. We stopped by for lunch and were able to get seated without much of a wait, however, if it is dinner you are after, reservations would be very helpful read more

Pretty disappointing as this was advertised quite heavily. We sat outside in the courtyard and definitely has a meh night out after visiting the Christmas festivities in the main plaza. read more

First, let me start by saying they don't have a tasting menu. This was a Yelp find on a night when I had no dinner reservations. I walked from my hotel since it was only about 10 mins away and I wanted to work up an appetite. The lady at the front said there was about a half hour wait so I put my name down then went outside for a stroll. I got even more hungry. To say that it's blue in there would be an understatement. So, the set up is kind of indoor/outdoor since you're in the middle of a courtyard. To my disappointment, I was told they do not in fact offer a tasting menu. That's not what I was led to believe based on one of the reviews that I previously read. I was looking forward to doing a taco tasting. I ended up ordering a la carte. I kicked off with the ceviche and a mole situation. Then I moved to the tacos de lechon. The order came with four pieces. As I'm not really a fan of tortillas, what I ended up doing was mixing the meat and making instead two big tacos. The salsa they provided was proper spicy. I could only use a bit of the spicier option. Decided to end with the tamalito which was chocolate based. S The food was good, but the selling point for me was the pulque. They offered different flavors. I only tried one - lychee. Any other day I would've been down to have at least three bottles, but I wasn't that thirsty. This is a great place to have a date. read more

Perfect place for a first meal in CDMX. Location in historico central will introduce you to the culture of the city. Walk through the beautiful old doors of the Palace of the Counts of Miravelle and watch fresh tortillas being made by hand as you check in for your reservation. So much variety on the menus, highlighting the best of Oaxacan food. As much care is placed on presentation as on the preparation. We shared the tortillas soup -- served in a beautiful bowl topped with a skeleton and served with a gold spoon, and the pescado tikin xic (grouper). You know at first bite the meal is something special. Lovely, attentive staff throughout the evening, and tableside hot chocolate spiked with mezcal for dessert made this a memorable meal. read more

I was pleasantly surprised how nice the restaurant is . Located in the center of Mexico City in a hotel ( which has a rooftop ), it has a very spanish ( Spain feel ) given the building . We went there for dinner and the ambiance was cozy and romantic even amongst friends. I was invited by some new local friends and am glad that they chose a non modern restaurant that's unique and serves good food. We had the guacamole for appetizers and I had the tortilla soup which was presented and served in beautiful container ( see photo ) . It was served with amazing bread. The drinks were great , we had different flavors of margaritas ( I had the tamarind which was very good ). The servers were very attentive. With a phletora of amazing food and restaurants in Mexico City , most situated in Polanco, condessa and Roma, this is a good option to add in the mix even though it's not in the same neighborhoods of the more popular restaurants. Post dinner or pre , highly recommended to check the presidential home and admire some of the architecture - buildings in downtown close to the restaurant. Note. There's a casino across the street that is also worth visiting ( we couldn't as there's a special event ) but the ceiling of the casino looks incredible . read more
The service here was excellent and the decor is quite amazing! I really enjoyed this restaurant. We ordered the deer and tortilla soup as appetizers and had the mole enchiladas as my main dish. The deer appetizer was tasty, nothing out of this world but tasty. The presentation of the tortilla soup is great - they serve it to you in a catrina. My first bite of the mole enchiladas was underwhelming but the taste improved as I continued to eat. The tortillas used for the enchiladas are homemade which I definitely enjoyed. I haaaad to try dessert and ordered the isla flotante tabasqueña for dessert which is essentially bread floating on top of an arroz con leche like mixture, nothing out of this world - the description on the menu is what sold me on this dessert. This dessert can easily satisfy 4 people since it's a large piece of bread. I had the chocolate oaxaqueño with Jamaica as my drink, it was different but I actually really enjoyed it. All in all, I'm glad I got to try this place! Service was great. read more
Atmosphere is off the charts!! Where else are you going to dine in the middle of this historical building that is open air and this giant tree providing you cover?! It has such a warm feeling even though you're pretty much smack dab in the middle of a courtyard with businesses around you. We made reservations and were seated right away when we got there, there were a couple people waiting around so i imagine they do take walk ins as well. We were lucky enough to have someone who understood a little bit of english so we could ask a couple questions about dishes and what not. After we sat down we were given this off menu item compliments of the chef, it was this bread that was sugar coated, so good! You know it's going to be a good evening when there are off menu complimentary items given out. We ordered tacos, steak and this fish dish. The tacos came wrapped in banana leaves that gave it this hint of flavor and aroma. The steak...eh if you've eaten steak in a steak restaurant in the US, do not get steak in Mexico. It was a little bland, not really seasoned or have a crisp sear, it's really surprising because Mexican Carne asadas are so flavorful! The fish...omg let me tell you about the fish. It was probably the best thing I ate on the whole trip! Presentation wise it was nice not like super like wow, but in my mouth...that was like so many layers of flavors, we shared it but i think we could have eaten one each lol. read more
Viva Mexico! I came across this place during my research for chiles en Nogada. I immediately booked a reservation in hopes of trying the dish. Unfortunately, it was not on the menu during my visit, but our taste buds were still tickled pink with some of the best food I ate in Mexico. The restaurant is located indoors underneath beautifully woven trees. We were quickly seated and given a small plate of bread. It was coated in sugar and it was at that moment that I knew this meal was going to be special. We ordered tacos, steak and Pescado Tikin Xic, Yucatán (fish). The lechon tacos came wrapped in banana leaves and was wonderfully perfumed of the banana leaves. The steak was ok. I would pass on steak in Mexico. The fish dish was the best thing I ate during my time in Mexico. The presentation was nice and I wasn't expecting much, but it was an explosion of flavor in my mouth. Definitely get this dish! We ended the night with dessert. We had a chocolate cake wrapped in a banana leaf, drenched in white sauce, and fresh fruit. We happened to visit this busy part of Mexico the weekend before dia de los muertos and didn't realize the streets were shut down and there were festivities going on. Had a 7 person family meal here. The service, food and ambiance are all top notch. I got the mole enchiladas which was really good and sweet. The fish looked great as well, medium sized portions and higher quality. The lighting in the trees is a nice touch. read more

Cute restaurant with great indoor ambiance. Friendly service and great food. The mole was delicious, the drinks had a good kick, and the dessert and hot chocolate rounded everything off nicely. We were mesmerized watching the tortillas being made fresh. read more
