Starbuck's introduced decent coffee to the masses, but good coffee it is not. On a quest for coffee I stumbled upon Saint-Henri micro-torrefacteur near the Atwater market that craft their beans into incredible drinks. The bar seating lining the large bay windows are popular with the laptop toting crowd and several rows of old church pews make for interesting seating at the front of the cafe though your eyes are naturally drawn to the large roaster in back. The seating area gets a ton of natural light and there's free password protected wi-fi so it's nice... most of the time, avoid coming when they are roasting coffee, it's a noisy process. I tried a cinnamon roll beside the counter, options were limited and it looked like a letdown. Surprised I was. The inside was packed with a sweet cinnamon and sugar mixture and the flaky bread wasn't too dry nor was it soggy. Way exceeded my expectations. The coffee is what makes this place special. The classic American drip coffee is delightful to enjoy. It was fresh and well roasted. Very smooth with balanced flavors, no bitterness even near the end. Coffee done right. Glancing around a bit more I noticed a variety of coffee machines, well beyond drip, espresso and press. Look closely and you'll see Chemex makers, Aeropress machines and a few other bizarre contraptions. I get vibes that the crew at Saint-Henri's care about the coffee craft. The coffee is some of the nicest I've experienced in the city so I'll be returning often. read more

Really neat neighborhood café that also roasts its own beans. But the clock is ticking. The "À Louer" sign is up and in less than 6 months, Café Saint-Henri will longer be, at least not in its current location. This is one of those places with a deep local vibe, you feel it as you step in on a Sunday afternoon packed with people. I find the combination of tables and church benches really hip. I can imagine an awesome group coffee date on those benches. The staff is among the most soft-spoken and unpretentious of 3rd wave coffee shops. Saint-Henri is my go-to roaster these days to get my weekly pound of beans for home. The single origin beans change from time to time and there are always a few to choose from, never more than a week old. Also free drink with bean purchase. There is a choice of two espressos: the default Godshot roast or a really mellow Holy Cow. I haven't really tried the food. You will be missed, Saint-Henri. read more

I used to live on rue bourget and the four years that i did and apparently many before this location sat empty. I drink a fair amount of espresso based coffee, the first coffee I ever drank was an espresso, so you can imagine I was excited at the prospect of being able to get one at the corner of my street. A group of us went in the day that they opened all supportive and 'welcome to the neighbourhood' like, all four us were shocked at the incredible attitude served with the coffee. Twice more did I have same style service. Never again. I am tired of feeling like I need to get down on my knees to pay hommage to whatever arrogant barista is giving the machine and themselves a handjob. A warm and cozy little gem hidden on a small offshoot from the busy Rue St. Denis. Cafe St Henri has fantastic coffee, well sourced and excellently prepared. Amazing! They also serve you coffee with the a cloth napkin and water to cleanse your taste buds beforehand. Honestly, first place in Canada that I think the flat white is so so so legit!! I am still in the hunt for good flat white all over Vancouver and coming to Montreal, this has become a Must-go place for my daily dose of coffees. The pastries or croissant are nothing to shout about, but do get them if you are hungry. The benches 'taken' from the churches is a first for me! It is really creative and cool. p/s: Sumac next door serves super awesome Lebanese food too. Hence, as a visitor, you could really spend a good day around St. Henri area, having coffee in the morning, followed by Sumac for lunch ;) or vice versa and walk around the area after. read more

Ah, Cafe St. Henri is my little oasis near my work. We have a decent automatic espresso machine in the office, but nothing beats an expertly pulled espresso. Attention to detail is what makes this place shine...you know just by the way the barista measures and re-measures to get the perfect tamp. I usually get a single espresso, a chug of water to cleanse the palate and I'm on my way out. Quiet atmosphere, great place to read or have a friendly chat. read more

This is a cool little cafe just off busy St. Catherine street. They are open late and it is never too busy. Great coffee and you get free sparking water to cleanse the palate with every drink along with a cloth napkin. I love it! I had no intention of actually going to this place, in fact I had no idea it existed since it was my first time down this particular stretch. This trendy-looking little coffee shop presented itself and I decided to come in and look around. After a stop at the Atwater Market (where I was only able to find coffee beans with a "Use By" date of the previous month) I'm glad I found this place. I was able to pick up a great Ethiopian Sidamo for my loft, and the woman behind the counter proved to be knowledgeable and happy to help out. At the time of my visit it was a pretty full house, which of course makes perfect sense -- the coffee is delicious and it's a really cool environment. It's a bit out of the way for me, maybe a mile walk from the loft. But I need the exercise and they've definitely won my repeat business, so they'll be seeing me again very soon. read more

Third Wave coffee @ it's best What a great find. Nestled as the back of Hotel St Denis is this charming locale. So perfect in every way. Self and boy friend popped in one mid week morning in early November around 8:30am, I believe that it stays open until 10pm. Just one or two other customers. Our highly entertaining, engaging and thoroughly skillful Barista gave us a wonderful experience. Shame I didn't ask for his name. We placed our order for a cappuccino and a drip coffee as well and accepted his recommendation for the most scrumptious sweet potato muffin and delicious almond croissant and were asked to take a seat. Now knowing that artisanal coffee takes time we were really taken in with the ambiance and vibe of Cafe St Henri. The photos on Yelp will give you a perfect birds eye view of the restaurant's interiors. Soon enough our Barista served up our coffees and pastries, along with cute glasses filled with good water and linen napkins. Because he wasn't so busy just then we were able to engage in conversation with him relating to third wave coffee in Montreal versus our hometown of NYC. He explained the history behind the coffee used at the cafe and the roasting. And just like a previous Yelp Reviewer mentioned, coffee made in small batches is truly coffee at its best. We fell in love. You just couldn't help it. Everything that should be right about a coffee experience was there at Cafe St Henri. The place: Small but you don't really feel crowded unless (I assume) the place is packed. They've got a few tables and three pews. Yes, you read that right - church pews. Good if you decide to take a nap on a hot and humid day summer ;-D. The goods: I was a little iffy about these guys because the feedback really varies - some people love it while others hate it. On my end, I was pleasantly surprised - the macchiato I ordered was amazing - almost as good as my new favourite place, Code Black (don't tell Vince at Olimpico!). Service: Meh. A quiet cafe just off St. Denis in the Latin Quarter on a quiet street called Rue Emery that you may not spot right away. Look for a teal round lit sign sticking out that says "cafe". The mocha was $4.75 which is comparable to most places in Montreal though the drink was a bit too smokey and dark and the chocolate was a bit gritty for my tastes. BUT, the barista I encountered here was super passionate about coffee and all things related. I was engaged in a very informative conversation with the barista; he told me a lot about the coffee scene here in Montreal and mentioned a few other recommendations. Loved his enthusiasm. read more
