The aroma coming from the fireplace was very interesting compared to a wood burning fireplace. You could visit several rooms in the farmhouse to get a feel for what it was like to live there. We then moved into a large room with tables and benches with all the materials for making scones laid out. Mary was our instructor that provided the step by step instructions to make our own scones. Once the batter was ready and the scones were ready for baking a number was assigned to your tray so that, once baked, they would come back to you for tasting. While the baking was going on, Fontana the farmer, took us out back and talked to us about sheep farming and the challenges they have. Fontana also provided a sheep dog demonstration with Bailey his sheepdog. Once that was completed we returned to the dining room to get our scones and try them out with some rhubarb-ginger jam and cream. We also hit a wool spinning demonstration which was very interesting and informative. Finished off with a visit to the gift shop to pick up some very reasonably priced items. If you want to have a uniques experience this is one you shouldn't miss.

Every member of the staff went above and beyond to make us feel welcome, and their exceptional patience and encouragement--especially with the children--was truly remarkable. Great help from some of the young women who ride at the stable. The team's expertise and calm manner put even the most nervous riders at ease. They took the time to ensure everyone felt safe and confident, which made the experience enjoyable for riders of all ages and abilities. Our children, in particular, had the time of their lives and are still talking about the horses and the people who helped them. A special highlight was meeting the proprietor, Mr. Morgan O'Brien. His deep knowledge of the area's history, combined with his passion for sharing it, added a rich layer of storytelling that made the day even more memorable. Listening to his tales about the heritage of Castlefergus and its equestrian traditions was a privilege in itself. This was more than just a horseback riding experience--it was a warm, personal, and educational journey that we will cherish. I can't recommend Castlefergus Equestrian highly enough for families, history lovers, or anyone who appreciates genuine Irish hospitality.

With that said this was a high ranking favorite and I recommend visiting Fairy Fort & Pet Sheep (also known as Ring Fort.) It was simplistic and charming. It did not have a tourist area feel to it. Fairy Forts are circular grass mounds that are said to have magical powers. It is believed that these rings give you entrance to the other world. It's a curse to build on them or destroy them in any way. The locals have stories about those who show little regard for the powers of Fairy Forts. For a few euros you get to walk around the farm land. Included in the price is feeding all of the animals and exploring the Fairy Fort. As soon as you pass the little gate you see the animals. They watch you walking down the dirt path and you can feel their excitement building. They all want to eat and interact with their guests. You are given a cup of food and it goes pretty quick. Afterwards I walked around the Fairy Fort and made sure to be respectful. I thought that the whole Fairy Fort situation was a little spooky. I grew up listening to these types of stories about Ireland and I can say for certain that many people deeply believe in them. That's enough for me ....Pretty quickly I made my way back to the animals and continued to enjoy petting, feeding and talking to them.
