Stopped in a while back, and we got a couple of flavors to share. Chocolate something, Carrot cake and something I don't remember. I would have loved to try a lemon flavor, but we stopped in late in the day there wasn't a huge variety of flavors that interested us. The chocolate was OK, the carrot cupcake was great. Carrot cake is my favorite, and I am particular. It was tasty! I'd definitely stop in again for a treat. Please note we did not purchase either cakes: We had cake from this company twice in two months. (two birthdays, not related) Neither time was good. The cakes had a dry texture and bland flavor. BOTH TIMES! My nieces cake was beautiful but my slice ended up being tossed out in favor of ice cream instead. It was dry and had a very odd flavor that was not pleasant at all. (Her sister had one earlier in the year which was about the same in taste) My friends cake was pretty but, again, lacked any flavor. It had a fruit filling you not only couldn't see, you could not taste it! For the prices these things cost, it is a shame that more care is not taken to insure the cake is just as good inside as it is on the outside. I'd rather get a Costco cake for the taste and do w/o the fancy outside. read more

Such a cute place! I went close to closing time so there wasn't much to choose from but the options available looked awesome. Their Salted Caramel Chocolate Chip Cookie Bar is SO GOOD! Got some cupcakes for my daughter the other day. A little disappointed they were out of chocolate one. Best part about this place, you get to sample each cupcake as a mini for free before you buy or in my case buy all they did'nt have left in minis, and take them home along with all the sample minis, greedy much? Other places sell them for upto $2 a piece, here as samples, I love this, best concept ever! The girls working here are as sweet as the cupcakes, know exactly what they are doing and love it which is always something I like to see and support. They have different flavors every day and then every month so I look forward to seeing what is in store for me next time. I got black bottom or was it black and tan?, a chocolate cream cheese, and it was delicious, strawberry, fresh and light, also yummy, guiness which I worried would taste like beer but as promised it just made the chocolate flavor come out more and with caramel filling it was my favorite of the bunch, and a super chocolatey one, really you can't go wrong with any of their options! Chocolate, coconut raspberry and red velvet minis, each one also a true delight! The prices are average, seeing how all these cupcake shops charge at least $3 a cupcake, one doesn't even raise an eyebrow about paying that anymore, PLUS they have samples AND won the cupcake wars on TV! We visited the storefront to pick some sweets up while were in town. When we walked in, we didn't get a hello or smile. The first thing out of her mouth was her asking how many we were going to get in total before we had even looked at the case. Nothing was described at all and we were just started at while feeling rushed. We left with a half dozen including the lemon cream, vanilla, chocolate, german chocolate and the pistachio. The vanilla cake crumbled into piece as it was eaten. All of the frostings were gritty and mostly flavorless. The cakes all seemed dry and bland as well. I'm not sure if they were old or if it was from the refrigerated case but the frosting had a thin, hard layer on the outside. There was nothing in the storefront stating they won cupcake wars, which is surprising.The price is normal for a gourmet cupcake, but I would not consider these gourmet. The ingredients seem cheap and covered with extracts. It was a disappointing experience. read more

I keep meaning to review Cake In A Cup, but then I get all grumpy about cupcakes being a "thing" and I forget. I mean, cupcakes are awesome, I wish they came bigger...like cake. ANYWAYS, here's the thing with Cake In A Cup, it's super cute inside. The workers are nice. The flavors all have witty names and look very pretty. But the cupcakes don't actually taste that good. (I'll pause while you all throw things at me.) I tried, repeatedly. I wanted to adore these, but seriously, they are barely above "meh" for me. In fact, Sam's Club cupcakes rank higher. The cake part is always a touch dry, and the frosting too gritty, and the flavor overall is lacking. And I hate even saying any of this. I do cupcake (I'm using this as a verb) quite often, and maybe I've been spoiled by bakeries in New York and L.A. that charge the same price for a much larger, super moist and amazing cupcake. That being said, they have one cupcake that I find palatable, and always duck in to get a box before our monthly friends' dinner at Kyoto Ka, and that is the Black Bottom. So far, it's the only one I would feel justified paying for, and I'm thankful its super rich, because it's not even that large. Okay, so this is done and it's all out there. I feel better. I am crazy picky about my cupcakes. I am NOT a Sprinkles fan, if that means anything to you. I desire an incredibly moist, flavorful, yet light cupcake. I'm not down with the dry dense stuff slathered with a pound of overly sweet over thick icing. I live in LA. I have been to Toledo twice. The second time I knew I would be coming here, my *first* question was, "can we go to Cake in a Cup while we're there?" I am a big fan of the consistency and flavor of their icing, and I normally just don't like icing at all. Usually, after sampling a finger of it, it's the first thing to get scraped right off. Cake in a Cup still puts too much icing on for me by half, but at least it's DELICIOUS. And the texture and moistness of the cake is just incredible...so smooth. It's like a much airier version of pound cake. The flavors are always light and clear and well-balanced. I've even highly enjoyed flavors of cake I wouldn't normally go for. Some of my favorites have been the Cookies and Cream (a whole oreo is baked right into the cupcake in addition to the half an Oreo perched atop the icing) and the Guinness. Turtle was also fantastic. Strawberry was delicious (not normally a fan). In fact, I can't recall a flavor I straight up did not enjoy here. The staff is very friendly and helpful. My one and only complaint is that they are a little expensive for their size, but again.. it's not a price I mind paying because the quality is perfect for me. This place reminds me of little cupcake shops that they have in New York, like Magnolia's. They have different flavors each day and the cupcakes are very moist and delicious! I'm not much of a dessert person so I don't really like it when the desserts are overbearingly sweet. But the cupcakes here are the perfect balance of sweetness! Pretty, cute little jewel box of a store. Eight flavors were available, flavors like lemon-blueberry and black bottom cheesecake. The associate told me if you ask ahead two days that they will make a gluten-free chocolate one, which would be great for parties. My sister and I split a black bottom cheesecake. The chocolate was rich and fresh and creamy. The cheesecake part needed a little punch. Overall, for $2.75, it was a good treat! read more

So Toledo (or the entire state of Ohio, for that matter) may not have a single fro-yo place, but it doesn't matter because there is ONE cupcake store in the city! w00t! Sparse tables can be found both inside and outside of this demurely decorated, yet immaculate cupcakery. Cupcake offerings change from day to day, and during the day that I was there, Red Velvet, Rocky Road, Cinnamon Chip, Cookies& Cream, Hostess With the Mostest, Tropical Getaway, and Regular chocolate, and vanilla were displayed. Bonus for the creative names for other cupcakes like Devil Wears Prada and Hola Poppy. For $2.50 a pop for the "specialty" cupcakes (or $2/regular cupcake, but come on, that's just boring methinks), prices are quite reasonable. Your waistline, on the other hand, will be a whole different story, my friend. Red velvet was oh-so-heavenly! Not too sweet and not too heavy, this could very well be my fave pick. The rocky road was piled high with icing and the cake itself was chock full of chocolate bits. As a chocoholic myself, even I found it to be a bit much. The tropical getaway was topped with coconut and had bits and pieces of pineapple. Coconut is not my cup of tea, but fans will love this treat. I was visiting my parents and they wanted to try this so we stopped by and got half a dozen so I tried a few different flavors. I thought the Pretty in Pink was really delicious, simple and pretty. I didn't particularly care for the Black Bottom; the icing was too rich and heavy for me. However, the Cookies and Cream is amazing and well worth the drive, the price . . . everything! There is an Oreo baked into the cupcake. That's right, baked into the freakin' CUPCAKE! Easily my favorite and something I'll frequently be requesting. My Dad gave the seal of approval to the Red Velvet and Mom really likes the Lemon Blueberry (although I prefer Thrush's lemon cupcake personally). I don't think $2 or $2.50 is too much to pay for a cupcake. They look as good as they taste, have inventive flavors and you are supporting a local business. They also have samples which are mini cupcakes which adds to the boutique experience. They will make those minis for you with advance notice, which I think would be really cute for a party or baby/bridal shower. I thought the cupcakes were great and it's nice to see Toledo getting some more hip specialty shops like this. read more

I'll admit it, I have a sweet tooth. If sweets could provide adequate nutrition, I would eat nothing but cupcakes all day and night. No joke. Not kidding. I can't seem to give this place more than 2-3 stars. It is just OK - and that's it. I gave it 3 stars because the girl behind the counter was super nice, helpful and friendly, and didn't seem to mind that I dropped by about 45 minutes before they close (note: I typically don't ever patronize a place within an hour of close, because I was a server for about 6-7 years). Maybe it's me, but I felt like the cupcake was really small, and I don't have large hands! I don't know what I was imagining for $2.50, but I guess I was expecting something bigger and better? I ordered the mandarin white chocolate (at least I think that's what it is called?), and although it had good texture and a decent mandarin flavor, it kind of just leaves you sort of blah and unsatisfied at the end. But maybe it's just me? I think my FAVORITE bakery Sugar Mama's Bakeshop in Austin,TX just spoiled me too much. :/ I'm not sure if I'd stop by again. If I would stop by again, it would most likely be because I am craving something sweet, and then I'd probably order two cupcakes to get my fix. :o) read more

I LOVE cupcakes. Just not from here. I've tried many flavors of cupcakes from this shop. I keep hoping that each time I ago, the cupcakes will get better. It's not that they are bad, they just aren't great. I can make better cupcakes at home, and even some grocery stores have better cupcakes. These are regular sized cupcakes, with lots of frosting on them. I honestly think the frosting makes up for the fact that the cupcakes themselves are just OK. They are also very pricey for what you get. They are almost $3 a piece. I know this is the most popular place in Toledo to get cupcakes but, I have to say, I've been there three or four times now where the service and quality is really lacking. I ordered coffee that was filled less than 1/2 the cup because they ran out of milk and was charged the full price. They run low on cupcakes in general and there is just a lacking attitude this place has adopted that is very disappointing. Even the quality of the cupcake itself is different the last time I went there. I know they are one of the only cupcake places around, but quality and service are still very important. Another disappointment.. it was a beautiful Sweetest Day full of promise when a friend of mine stopped over to bring me a sweet treat- a Pretty in Pink cupcake complete with a tiny heart. The looks of it had my heart melting, only a person who truly knew and cared about me would know I'd take a cupcake over flowers any day! I bit into the "strawberry" cake and wanted to cringe... There's hype about this place because of the Cupcake Wars. I've tried many of the cupcakes, and these are not my favorite cupcakes. I do not like overly sweet icing. In general, I wish these cupcakes were a little more moist, and had that a little less frosting. They are always decorated beautifully. Cookies and cream is too sweet for my taste, and this is not my favorite red velvet. I do like the Turtle cupcake, and the carrot cake. In any case, you should check this place out just to try different types of cupcakes! read more

Update: The Skinny: Dry cake, mediocre service and cupcakes in bags! Yes last time I went in the cupcakes were pretty dry as other guests have mentioned. Red Velvet was dry, but carrot cake was pretty moist. I only bought the carrot cake bc I wanted a non dry cupcake, usually I just get 1-2 red velvet. I also don't like the idea that the cupcakes are put into a bag. That's pretty pour taste in my opinion and this wasn't standard packaging a bit back. To go along with everyone else who complains about customer service, they are correct it's 3 star service at best. Not horrible service, but not great service either. Service and packaging doesn't reflect what they want to charge. If this is a premium cupcake, please give premium packaging and premium service. Or at least not the cupcake in a bag. 50/50 chance I'll be back. I've heard decent reviews of another bakery in town, so they will be my next "cheat" when I desire a cupcake. read more

Cake in a Cup knows their stuff. Most of the flavors here are unique and delicious, and their cakes are really well baked. A couple of the flavors are a little too sweet for my taste (the Snickerdoodle and the Cookies and Cream), but the Carrot Cake, Devil Wears Prada, and Lemon Cream were wonderful, and the Red Velvet and the Turtle are both great! The only flavor that disappointed me was the Guinness cupcake in March - just didn't taste the Guinness, but it was a good chocolate cake! In general, the frosting is a bit too much for me, but it works because my husband is a frosting nut, so he takes mine once I've had my fill. I've been going to Cake in a Cup since just after it opened, and the cupcakes are still delicious and beautiful. Even though Toledo was late to join the cupcake trend, I'm glad we have such a tasty cupcake spot! read more

They are a cute little boutique bakery who specializes in cupcakes - there's a niche for you! Cake in a Cup is priced like a boutique as well at $2 for chocolate or vanilla and $2.50 for the special cupcakes. Seems a little high for Toledo but I would argue that they are worth it for a special occasion or just a nice treat. If you've ever visited Tremont or other hip areas of Cleveland then the prices won't shock you. They are in line with the city cousins and so is the quality of their goods, want a cheap snack hit Wal-mart but if you want quality these guys are worth a try. The special cupcake flavors have all been wonderful, as a chocoholic I'm partial to the Devil Wears Prada but they are all great. Other items include Black and Tan (made with Guiness and a caramel topping), Black Bottom (dark chocolate with a choc chip cheesecake topping), Red Velvet... Too many to name here. The store isn't much to write home about as interior design goes, sparse decor but it's not unwelcoming. Its in a small strip mall that I have yet to not pass as I approach from the east on Central. read more
