They need to take accountability when they make an error! They messed up a $300 cake and instead of accepting the fact that it was their error they shift blamed on the customer, I couldn't believe what I was hearing. I was attending a 70th birthday celebration when they unboxed the cake this is what they found, the customer stated that she put the seatbelt around the box so that the cake wouldn't move, however, the baker at the banquet hall discovered that the cake was uneven, the strawberry filling was not evenly spread and the stilts was not properly set in the cake, that's why the whole bottom of the cake shifted, the customer called them regarding the issue and she had her phone on speaker and I just couldn't believe what I was hearing... the owner finally got on the phone and he was worst than the workers, he kept saying the customers never want to admit that they mishandled a cake, they been in business for many years and haven't had any problems.. that's a LIE because looking over some of their reviews they've had plenty of complaints... We've been getting our customized cakes made here since 2014. We only had one bad experience where the cake order wasn't ready when we got there. It seemed to be that the cake was put together last minute once we arrived. However, we went back several times after and have been pleased each time. The pastries are great as well. I caught them in the act when on the same day I bought 2 doughnuts totaling $4, my husband called me and asked what I purchased for $140. I contacted the bakery immediately by phone and returned to the store. Only upon threatening to get the police involved did the worker produce the illegal transaction and said she refunded my card. 1 week later, the charge was still showing and my bank advised they produced a receipt for payment. Admittedly, I need to recalibrate my personal Yelp rating system, for a place like Cal City Bakery cannot justly be compared to the likes of the gourmet doughnut shops all over Chicago (Firecakes, Glazed & Infused, Do-Rite, Vault, Beaver, Stans). I mean, CCB is essentially sandwiched in a no-man's land between Cal City and Hammond, miles and miles from any other place a true doughnut connoisseur, if there is such a thing, would venture. And yet, I went there. I've gone a few times. Their poppy seed and cinnamon croissant, I think it is, is FABULOUS and something like 97 cents. Their danishes are a crowd-pleaser and always great. I once bought a pumpkin loaf of some sort that was, disappointingly, half frozen when I got it but still a total hit with the recipients. Today, I was taken in by the doughnuts, admittedly huge, gorgeous creations that scream "eat me." The folks I fed referred to these pastries as "crack" and to me as "evil," which I took to mean they liked them. I, however, did not. I had a bite of three separate doughnuts - the apple fritter, the Boston creme, and the vanilla long john. All three had a weird taste/aftertaste that I am convinced is lard. As a recovering vegetarian, lard in pastries just grosses me out, and so I will avoid these pig-packed pastries in the future. I also avoid the coffee here, unless I have my own mug, because of the carcinogenic styrofoam cups. We were deferred to Cal City Bakery bc Calumet Bakery was closed yesterday. We went in with an open mind and was greeted by a very rude counter person. She was annoyed by us as we didn't know exactly what donuts we wanted, mind you we were the only customers in the place. She got a phone call answered it and put them on hold as she tossed the phone on the counter. She wasn't gloved and there were flies in the bakery. They had plastic covering the service area where the baked good were. She didn't use bakery sheets either. We didn't want to cause an issue and proceeded to be nice. We will never return to that bakery. Needless to say we threw away our items bc I just couldn't eat them after no safety was in place. When I was a little kid in the 50s, there was a bakery in my neighborhood (Roseland) that I remember had these great chocolate donuts. I obviously can't explain how they tasted, but no chocolate donut has ever matched that taste I remember. Until I found Cal City Bakery - like being transported back in time. Their butter cookies are excellent, they have these mini sticky buns that are great. Everything I've tried is excellent. I was in there one day, and a guy came in and bought like 6 coffee cakes. I asked him what the deal was, and he said he was picking them up for his mom's club. You gotta know they're great when you buy 6 coffee cakes. Parking right next store or on-street. Very reasonable prices, nice selection. Obviously, the earlier you get there the better selection. read more
