You know how you know when you had something great? You crave it the next day. That's what's going on with everything I ate here yesterday. This place is the definition of hidden gem. It's a small spot tucked away in Mineola within walking distance of the train station. We went here with our immediate family to celebrate our wedding. We did not have a single bad thing on the menu and the appetizers were excellent. We had the veal meatballs, flatbread, empanadas, bacon wrapped scallops, and calamari. Everything was cooked to perfection. The meatballs were EXCELLENT. That stole the show for me along with the empanadas. The calamari was cooked to perfection, not in the least bit chewy. Same with the scallops. And the flatbread had a memorable robust sauce. Very similar to Umberto's grandma slice sauce. As far as entrees, I'll comment on what I had and what I tried, first. I had the salmon that is on the regular menu. Again, cooked perfectly, a nice sized portion and terrific mashed potato's. I tried the skirt steak that was on the special menu was well and that was to die for. Keep that on the menu! My husband had the Chicken Luciano, which was reminiscent of Don Pepe's version, back when they were good. It was excellent! I had a chance to try the beef stroganoff with risotto, which was on the special menu. This was IMO the dish to get. This was simply put, amazing. Lastly, the Italian cheesecake we had was out of bounds outrageous. I think this is one of my favorite Italian cheesecakes. It's right up there with the Italian cheesecake from Villabate Alba. I'd LOVE to see Cala Luna's version of a cannoli added to the menu. I want to throw in there too I had a chance to try one of the mixed drinks - the tropical margarita. Instant vacation in a glass. Phenomenal. Lastly, I'd like to just comment on the staff. Polite, curious, professional, attentive, and personable. Pretty quick too! Solid Italian option in Mineola. We tried the beet salad, stuffed chicken and ravioli. All solid, 4 out of 5. Slightly pricey and a bit loud. Generally attentive service but when it got busy it got notably slower. I was impressed with the quality of the beer menu which is rare at local Italian restaurants. This place is a hidden gem! My family and I stopped by on a Saturday afternoon and there was just one other table. The staff was super friendly without being overbearing. My kids ordered the chocolate pancakes and chicken fingers. There was not a crumb left! They devoured everything. My husband ordered the Cuban sandwich and I had the crab cakes. It was delicious!! this place was truly spectacular, some nice prints hung on the wall and it's a great, warm escape from the cold winter weather.(40 degrees Fahrenheit!!!!) for starters, we got one of each flatbread, which we're all amazing. waiters came around often and refilled everyone's water and dropped off some crusty brown bread, butter, and another spread i don't remember the name of... but that one was super tasty too. i ordered a lemonade and a Hunters Chicken, and finished off with a coconut tiramisu... chicken was cooked perfectly and all the sides were delicious, and i really loved the tiramisu. would love to come back here again if i'm ever in the area!!! read more

Came for Saturday Brunch as they opened. Everyone there was friendly and attentive. We sat outside in their covered back area as it was a nice day. I got the coconut margarita, which was really good and had just the right amount of sweetness. Food was fresh and delicious. Would definitely come again for lunch/dinner. read more

Had stopped in for lunch with mom since we had some time to kill before her appointment. The service was pleasant and the food was done well. The veal meatballs were very tasty and the crab cake was primarily lump crab meat and done very well. The black squid linguine with shrimp was delicious and the portion size was substantial enough for two people. They had no issues with dividing the linguine onto two plates. The desert we had citrus flan which was very delicate and sweet and the perfect end to the meal. Would definitely come back here to try other items off the menu. Had an amazing birthday dinner here and I had the best time. The food was so light but decadent and truly delicious. My favorites had to be the truffle Flatbread and wild boar ragu. Head over to Cala Lunas asap because the wild boar ragu was a special. What made this experience memorable was the truly impeccable service. It had a cozy yet sophisticated vibe. Monday, February 3, 2024. My wife and I enjoy all attributes at Cala Luna. We invited my son and his girl friend and had a pleasant time. My bill was $257. Recognizing a slow night, my tip was $110 (43%). We were all enjoying a nice time and stayed for bit after I paid the bill. My son ordered a glass of beer after the bill was paid. When leaving my son was presented a BILL for a glass of BEER!!!. Shameful, L (our waiter) didn't appreciate my patronage or generosity. 5 stars, less 2, for bad business. read more

This is based on a takeout order. We are so pleasantly surprised at the quality of the pasta dishes, the calamari, and the eggplant parmigiana. Called in advance before making reservations and was told that anything on the menu could be made gluten free. Should've known better, but saw other reviews about gluten free food that I thought it would be ok. Called the day of the reservation to see if the flatbread options could be made GF and was told they couldn't, but they COULD make some of the pasta cream sauces dairy free. We get to the restaurant, and I was told they CANNOT make the cream sauce dairy free, then the waiter forgot to make my meal gluten free. The waiter also charged us for the extra serving of pasta that was made incorrectly because my family asked to box it up rather than do nothing with this portion that was unnecessarily made, as they gave us no options of what to do with it. Wish I said something, but just found it to be easier to leave. Definitely seemed like a good meal if you have no dietary restrictions, but absolutely let down by the "yes man" mentality to get a customer in the door before considering what they can actually make for you. I really don't ever feel prompted to write a review, but was so disappointed by the amount of times I checked before eating here that I figured it would be good to warn others. read more

Sunday night in the mood for steak and wife and friends want Italian. We decided on Cala Luna in Mineola. The last time I was here was about a year ago. Gee, the place was empty. I guess it's early. I called before and checked on their price fix menu at $36.95. The waiter stated that there was no price fix menu. So after convincing him by showing him the website . Everything was settled , so I thought. I ordered the skirt steak and my friend ordered the shrimp. We were then told that it wasn't on price fix. I pointed it out to the manager and he said sorry and walked away. We ate our meals and the waiter returned with the check and charged us extra for cash and credit. He finally deducted the amount. It seemed like the entire meal was not enjoyable because of climbing stairs during the entire meal. Everything was a battle. Now I realize why the restaurant was empty. read more

We came here during Long Island Restaurant week for dinner. The place wasn't busy and had their regular menu for restaurant week. Great food choices with some gluten free, soy free, and dairy free. We had P. E. I. MUSSEL Pots for appetizers, Sardinia paella for entrees, and Tiramisu & flourless chocolate cake for desserts. What a hidden gem! Had a great meal and experience at Cala Luna. The bread at the beginning of your meal is served with some sort of tomato jam that is delicious and tangy. We got the calamari which was fried perfectly and seasoned well. The chicken Luciano is a new favorite with it seeming like a full salad worth of arugula, tomato, and mozzarella on top of a crispy cutlet. Their Bianco flatbread was cheesy and crispy and chewy in the best ways. Then we finished with their gelato trio which reminds me of why I loved pistachio gelato in the first place. So glad we discovered this place! We were greeted well and welcomed warmly into the restaurant. I am vegetarian and so it's difficult for me to find food that is vegetarian friendly and experiments with more ingredients than just cheese and marinara sauce. Ended up getting the Porto Pino flatbread which was incredible and this pasta dish with mushrooms, cream and truffle. Enjoyed every bit of it especially the fresh coconut sorbet! We had a last minute reservation for 8 people, and we were lucky enough to snag a table. YOU HAVE TO TRY THIS PLACE! Our entire table loved the food. From the appetizers (the warm bread, the amazing carmalized onion spread, & the Calamari), to the main courses (the NY strip steak, the shrimp, and the ravioli), to the dessert (trust me... get the bread pudding!) everything was impeccable. My wife and I went to Cala Luna to celebrate Valentine's Day. It was the first time we went and we based the decision on all the positive reviews. We were not disappointed. The food and the service were excellent. We shared the fried calamari as an appetizer. My wife ordered the branzino (I tasted it) and it was superb. I had the paella and it too was superb (heavy on the seafood with just a little of the chicken and chorizo). For dessert we shared the flourless chocolate cake. Came in on a whim very few places open on Sundays in mineola. Liz suggested the hay and straw pasta it's creamy with truffle and perfect the next day if you are unable to finish it. Also the dirty martini was perfect will be returning! read more

Cala Luna is a great spot in the heart of Mineola. Joanna was a great server. Very friendly staff and food was great.

Went in Jan 2023. Staff was very nice and accommodating with food restrictions but overall food was flavorless, not that interesting.
