We've been here a couple of times and the food here is always delicious! The Charro Especiales was very flavorful and the portions were big enough to pair well with the tacos. The bistec and fajita tacos were solid and tasty. I got a tripita taco as well and the flavor was good but I prefer my tripas a little less cooked than these. They were a little overcooked for my liking. My girlfriend got the baja taco and this was by far the best taco at the table! The white fish was cooked to perfection and the portion size was huge for the taco. Staff was friendly and helpful as always. Ok so I literally downloaded Yelp again just to review this place because it was SO GOOD! The staff was very friendly and helpful which was a plus! I did not get a picture before I started eating so here's a mid bite/mid drink pic. I've been here one other time and got their tacos which were okay but this time I chose the Pirata which I had never tried before but it sounded good and it was delicious! Pretty much a large quesadilla with bistec, so good. I also got the strawberry lemonade and I mean just look at it. It's beautiful and it tastes great! There are several restaurants in this small plaza. Likely I'll try a couple there in the future. Calacas seems to be a small chain ( I realized later in driving around). This location was fairly new, as one employee took my photo as the "first to use the umbrellas" on the small patio out front. I ordered the ceviche and one each of the street tacos. The 5 tacos came out first and I wolfed them down. 1 was good, and the other 4 were excellent. I did not keep track of which was which, but one had crunchies in it. The green sauce which accompanied the tacos was appropriately spicy. The ceviche was huge for $10, with a whole plate of nachos to go with it. It was not too spicy, but I added the leftover green sauce to spice it up. This was exactly what I wanted after a long day of work. read more

We arrived and the hostess sat us at the last available table...facing the window. We promptly ordered beers and scanned the menu. We grabbed Charro Beans and chips. Then proceeded to order tacos...so many to choose from. Two of us ordered the QUESABIRRIA tacos. One ordered the PIBIL. Everything's tasted amazing. Now, back to the window. I've been dining at both Calacas, Harlingen and Brownsville consistently for the last 8 months (2-3 times per week). This review is for the Harlingen location. While the food is great ( can't go wrong with the fajita tacos, Baja tacos or quesabirria) and the micheladas are decent, my gripe is with waiting times. If you walk in, expect to be left standing awkwardly in the walkway for 5-10 min while the waitresses skillfully ignore you. This is with obvious tables open. Once you're seated, expect to wait 10-20 min to place your order. 15-20 min for food and then wait some more for the check. Great food keeps me coming back, but ridiculous waiting times keep me away at times. It is worth noting there are some times when the wait times are better, but It's pretty consistent across the board. I've been here while it's dead, and still had to wait, and been here when it's busy and had to wait just as long. There are a handful of times when everything was fast, but can count those times on one hand. The only time I gave received EXCELLENT service is when the boss walks in, which figures. Bathrooms are clean, outside seating area is kept decently clean. Green salsa is absolutely delicious. read more

I didn't get any pictures of the place but it was nicely decorated to give off the impression of street style in Mexico. There was only one waiter but he was friendly despite all the other tables he had while we were there. The limonadas were okay IMO, but both my sisters really enjoyed them so it all depends on your own taste. The guac was a solid 3/5, nothing too out of the ordinary but it was enjoyable. The tacos were really yummy and the salsa had the perfect kick to it! The tostada was also good but it had a little too much crema for my liking. The star of the show for me were the quesabirria tacos, and that's cause I'm not even a fan of birria tacos. I'd go back just for these since they were so good! We have tried multiple places here after moving from the West coast and this place is the closest to what we were looking for. Their drinks were tasty and they dress them up with candy on top, my kids loved it. I ordered something and unfortaunetly I can't remeber what it was but be sure to ask what kind of meat it is ahead of time. Everything on this menu was delicious. The quesadillas were so tasty and filled with so much flavor!! Would definitely order again. I ordered the tripas in soft and crunchy to choose the best one, but they were both AMAZING!! The crunch in the crispy was just right. The suave tripa also had flavor that was so good. The only thing I would ask is that the soft tripa get chopped a bit more. As I bit into the taco, the whole tripa came out leaving me with half a taco empty. They also have the option to order a variety of tacos to create a platter of the many different meats they offer. This is definitely a plus for those that have an appetite for a little of everything. This place is fabulous! We have been there several times and everything we've ordered has been outstanding. The Baja Tacos are probably my favorite, but I'd still order anything we've had again. The Michaladas are fun and come with snacks on top trier the original and sour pickle one so far and I'd recommend the sour pickle if you are a pickle fan. Street tacos are very tasty and on Taco Tuesday they are 10% off. We are wintering in Harlingen and will miss this place greatly when we leave.
