And the watermelon margaritas. He had the salad with grilled salmon, which I took bites of. The salmon was grilled perfectly. I had the Lucha libre dessert for my meal because "why not?" First-timers at Calaveras Cantina to try out Taco Tuesday. Party of 4, after being told it would be about a 30 minute wait, much to our surprise, we were told our table was ready within about 7-10 minutes (yay!). We sat at an outside table which was enjoyable, but it still was very noisy. Our server was nice enough, but spoke in a very low voice, which made it tough to hear (especially when one of our diners has hearing aides). We perused the Happy Hour menu for drinks since we were there early enough. Much to my surprise, even the Happy Hour prices for a "house" margarita was $9...and served in a cocktail/on-the-rocks glass....what ever happened to margarita glasses? We ordered tacos, between us we had brisket, spicy pork belly, and al pastor (pork). The menu says "soft flour tortillas", but after inquiring with the server, there are options of soft corn or crunchy corn as well. The tacos were very good, and the portions of meat inside were good. Excellent Mexican food, I've been here twice now and have over eaten both times! First, the table side guac is awesome, on wednesdays it's half price, it really is so delicious and the staff is super friendly. You can choose to have it mild, medium or hot. We chose medium and it was the perfect amount of spice. Our server seemed a bit new and kept going back to the kitchen to ask questions but he was very nice. I had the pollo enchiladas and I'm a bit of a stickler for enchilada sauce and this was DELICIOUS! I literally ate everything on my dish. I would highly recommend it. It had a delicious combo of sour cream and cheese drizzled on top which perfectly complimented the lime in the sauce. The first time I came here, and my reason for knocking a star off, is that I ordered the short rib tacos and there was a lot of fat in it, the bites with out were very good but unfortunately there wasn't a good amount of edible meat. Moving on, their drinks are on the strong side, guava margarita was legit and our co-eater had a Bloody Mary which he said was really tasty. Being waterside is always a bonus, the view is gorgeous and if you get a seat indoors the restaurant itself is very pretty too, take note of their chandeliers, and murals, especially the one of Frida Kahlo, it's breathtaking. I went here for the first time with my mom and my fiancé , first off the service was awful, waitress was rude. We got table side guacamole to charge extra except the guy was around the corner for the "table side". The guacamole was pure salt that's all you tasted. Anyways, we got tacos ..,the tacos came with 1 piece of shrimp and smothered in pumpkin seeds. The manager did comp our meals and have us a gift card so I felt he was a really good manager. My fiancé and I tried it again, this time we knew better not to get the tacos or guacamole so we got queso which wasn't the greatest but definitely better than the guacamole. We each got quesadilla which was pure grease I didn't even really eat it, the second you picked it up it would just drip and it was really soggy. Service was slow but our waiter was atleast pleasant this time. The prices for the quality of food you get is way too high. Overall We definitely would never go back again but we gave it a second chance because we had the gift card. read more

Was really excited to try this place but it was just average. Location is great, you can either park at the parking garage or they do valet right outside for $8. It's beautifully decorated inside, wait was a bit long so we sat outside. Waitress was great, friendly and checked on us frequently. Ok let's go into the food, the chips and salsa was ok, guacamole was ok (about the same as Rocco's tacos), the queso was good. Food was average. This place is in a nice shopping center and the restaurant is really good. The decor was very nice. We went for Valentines day and of course it was super busy. Calavera's has a waiting list you can sign into online and it helps moving you up the waiting list. We ordered blood orange margaritas from the bar where the girls were really nice, patient and informative. The drinks were perfect. Very good. We got a table about 15 minutes later and ordered the table guac and queso dip. Again very good and nice kid that made the guac. Our waiter was very patient with us as we were chatting and not looking at the menu right away. He made some suggestions and was spot on. This place has amazing Mexican food! The service is very nice and friendly- always refilling drinks and chip and salsa. The restaurant is beautifully decorated and very clean. When we went, it was Sunday mid afternoon and they had the brunch menus out. There was a really good guy playing the acoustic guitar and singing songs, which was a plus. I got a chicken quesadilla and my friends got the steak quesadilla, chicken bowls, wet burritos, carne tacos, and enchiladas rancheros. They all really enjoyed their food- I definitely enjoyed mine. The portions are very large for the quesadilla and wet burritos. The quesadillas had mushrooms, onions, and peppers in addition to the chicken and blend of cheeses. I would highly recommend them. It seems like this place uses very high quality ingredients and the prices aren't too bad. The chips, salsa, and guacamole are very good as well. Overall definitely recommend! read more

The service was terrible. Took almost three hours to get out. The quesadilla was wet soggy and disgusting. The salsa had a very strange taste that did not taste anything like salsa. After a long work week, My wife and I decided on a last minute date night and went over to Calaveras cantina for dinner and drinks. We were seated immediately. I have never given such a crappy tip in my life. Being a former bartender and server I try to give people the benefit of the doubt, because I know what it's like to be in the weeds. We were put in one of the last tables in the restaurant, close to the kitchen and service station. That didn't bother me, I had my kids with me and it was probably better that way. Our server took our drink order and the kids order because they were hungry. We got our drinks, the kids food, and our server never made it back to the table. I saw him bussing other tables and gave him some time thinking maybe he was just really busy. I just remember in my days in the restaurants not so long ago, taking a guest's orders received higher priority than bussing a table. But maybe that's not the policy at this restaurant, who knows. Finally after about 15 minutes we waved down a tall gentleman to please take our order. He looked like the manager, which normally I would have tried to avoid because I don't want to get our server in trouble, but we were very hungry. Long story short, the manager took our order, checked on us, and pre-bussed the table before we ever saw our server again, who finally decided to make an appearance as we were on the last few bites of food. I want to note that the last time we were here, everything was phenomenal from the time we sat down to the time we left. Maybe because the company I was with was spending more money, maybe it's because we were dressed differently (today we had been on the water all day and definitely did not look our best), or maybe it's because we had a different server. Our last experience there deserved a great review, this experience ensured that we will never go back. When you step inside you will first notice all the hand hewed wood and furniture that literally leaves you gaping and looking around from ceiling to floor like you have been transported to some grand hacienda south of the border. Then the open-kitchen pummels you with aromas and sounds that scream, "you came here to eat and eat you shall!" Start off with something simple, a Margarita...tequila, fresh juices and a touch of agave nectar.....fresh guacamole and chips served up in a traditional molcajete (sans tejalote, they stay in the hands of the well trained staff!) Gradually let your hunger get riled up! Then get ready for some seriously good Mexican fare. My eyes immediately are drawn to "Duck Confit Empanadas". Sold!! They are flakey, filled with succulent duck confit. I think I've said enough about that. Don't be silly, don't pass them up....ever! We had the "Wet Burrito" with Carnitas (you can get it with a litany of meats, seafood and veg.) and the Carne Asada (a signature dish). Both entrées were spectacular. Carnitas was seasoned properly and cooked to a mouth watering tenderness that seems to dissolve into some sort of "meat butter" in your mouth! Just, unreal. The Carne Asada was cooked to perfection and seasoned great! I rarely order skirt steak as a rule because most kitchens aren't capable of preparing and cooking it properly. But, I felt safe since this is basically a staple of Mexican cuisine. I was NOT disappointed!! Cooked and prepared to perfection. (I ordered Mid-rare.) The food, atmosphere, and service. Oh crap!!! SERVICE! The service was great, attentive and spot-on. No complaints!!! The only complaint I would have is there is smoking allowed outside. Yes, I am one of THOSE ex-smokers! So take it with a grain of salt. Not awful enough to give a four star rating. If you don't like smoke sit somewhere else. It is Florida and it's allowed here. Everything you see, smell and hear at Calavera's says "traditional" but the atmosphere, the food and the drink says something more. It elevates the traditional Mexican fare to a dining experience that is both thoughtfully prepared and perfectly executed. To sum it up: This is pretty much as good as it gets for Mexican cuisine and high-end tequila. Literally, anywhere! First time eating at this restaurant and we will be back. We ordered margaritas: one guava and the the other regular on the rocks without salt (Casa margarita). Both were good however we liked the regular one the best. You buy the chips and salsa as an appetizer. The chips are seasoned and good, however very salty (we usually eat low sodium). The chips can be ordered without the seasoning so next time we will try without. We asked for the salsa verde and the mild chunky salsa and were very pleased with both! My husband and I decided to get three different tacos to split and try: chorizo, fish (mahi-mahi) and Hongo (mushroom). The chorizo is a bit over powering. I would like to mix it in with other tacos as it has good flavor. The fish taco was great as was the Hongo taco. We tried all three different types of shells: soft flour, soft corn and hard corn. I listed in order of our liking. We also ordered a side of rice and pinto beans; excellent choice! Rice wasn't dry and beans had a lot of flavor. We asked for cheese on the side however they didn't get this correct. On the plus side, the cheese on tacos is a light sprinkling of cheese, similar to Parmesan cheese. We inquired about the cheese and the enchiladas have the shredded, melted cheese. We were interested in the guacamole made at your table. We decided against it this time as is a huge serving; highly recommend for 4 or more people. The decor is day of the dead and creates a very Mexican atmosphere. The noise level was low for good conversation however we were there on a Wednesday and wasn't too crowded. Happy hour is from 5-7. Margaritas on special for Mondays and Tacos on Tuesdays. We will return to try other entrees. Visited a second time for dinner, on a Saturday night. We tried the pineapple coconut margarita. IMO it's a cross between a piña colada and a margarita. My preference is still the Casa margarita (regular on rocks). The guacamole was very good. The chips this time didn't have as much seasoning as last time, therefore we enjoyed them. I was very, very happy with my enchilada de pollo (substituting red sauce for the salsa verde). My husband ordered a wet burrito de pollo (he requested salsa verde). Our daughter had the shrimp wet burrito (slightly spicy) and was happy. She liked her dessert: Coquito Tostado (ice cream). We brought home left overs for lunch tomorrow. It was a 30 minute wait for inside. The noise level was more than last time, however you could still talk/listen with everyone at your table. Service was slower for our table. My husbands order was wrong yet again: he asked for the chicken wet burrito without cheese and with red beans. He ended up with a beef wet burrito, no cheese and black beans. Oh well, he still liked his meal. We were too hungry to complain. We will return :) We've returned several times ... the Lucha Libre dessert is my teenage daughter's second favorite dessert.
