At the time, I was 32 weeks pregnant and hoping to have the remodel completed before our baby arrived. Azeen came over, listened carefully to our needs, and patiently discussed all the details with us. Our project was a like-for-like bathroom remodel, and Calibuilder's quote was competitive compared to other companies we considered. Knowing that our neighbors also had a great experience gave us confidence in choosing them. Throughout the project, we had a group chat with Azeen, where we documented all the finer details to ensure nothing was missed. This was incredibly helpful in keeping everyone aligned as the project progressed. Azeen also recommended a few stores for finishes and tiles--we went with Porcelanosa and are very happy with the final result. She prioritized our project, which we really appreciated given the baby could arrive any day. While there were a few things that initially didn't turn out the way we had hoped, calibuilder was responsive and came back to address and fix them. If you're particular about the small details, like we are, we recommend clearly communicating them upfront and documenting everything. Also, be sure to discuss any potential additional costs for smaller tasks that may not be included in the original quote to avoid surprises later. CaliBuilder team did a complete bathroom remodeling for us. It took longer than expected (~ 6 months all together), but we loved the final result! This turned out to be a very detailed and complicated project with many moving parts. We ripped out the entire old bathroom including walls, ceiling, the floor, and redid everything from scratch. We also repositioned the bathtub, vanity, and redid the entire plumbing system. The project manager, Azeen was very responsive, involved and caring. Along the way, Azeen was always available to answer any of our project/progress related questions, to address our concerns, and to discuss next steps. Azeen jumped at resolving any issues, and she also helped with finished product selection, provided her advice and guidance on design. It was a pleasure to work with her. Despite some bumps, and challenges, which alway come up with any construction project, overall we are very happy that we've selected CaliBuilder for this project and we are fully satisfied with our new beautiful bathroom. Originally I was working with what I thought was a really modern, tech-savvy general contractor, "Company E". But after the design process (which went pretty smoothly), Company E without any real explanation transferred the construction portion of my contract to CaliBuilder. Initially I was befuddled as to why. Ultimately, I was GRATEFUL and FORTUNATE that it happened, as CaliBuilder was proactive with their expertise and professionalism from Day 1, and proved time and again to be superior to my prior GC, who it became more apparent were not experienced contractors. I would have suffered had my contract remained with Company E. A few (unfortunately of MANY) examples of Company E's inexperience/ineptitude that CaliBuilder caught and immediately addressed: 1). MEASUREMENTS: Company E required me at the beginning of the construction process to purchase materials via their website. It was convenient and customizable, but they didn't seem to review my choices. My sink was TOO BIG for my countertop; the upper cabinets were TOO LONG to fit over the bottom cabinets, which were TOO SHORT in relation to the wall; Company E was able to get my sink exchanged for the correct size, but to save time CaliBuilders and I pivoted and simply moved the upper cabinets to the opposite wall, and made modifications to the countertop and lower cabinet so that it fit the room properly. I would have avoided additional cost and time had Company E paid attention to important details; 2). SAFETY: My renovation was to convert our garage to a senior-friendly safe living space. And yet, Company E approved a purchase I had made on their website for a certain type of shower floor tile. Which, when the bathroom was being worked on, CaliBuilders pointed out that the floor tiles would be SLIPPERY when wet and therefore DANGEROUS. Company E would not exchange these tiles (they said it was too late) so I decided to keep them for future tile work (for a wall). Why could a GC not catch basic issue such as this, especially knowing it was meant for an elderly resident? 3). UNNEEDED ITEMS/QUANTITIES: With Company E's guidance I purchased laminated flooring plus necessary supplies AND unnecessary supplies. CaliBuilder's installer was puzzled why I had purchased so many rolls of underlayment for flooring that already had it incorporated into their planks. Had we used the underlayment, it would have VOIDED the warranty on the flooring. There were also way too little or too many gallons/units of paint and other items, despite the fact Company E had dimensions of the proposed rooms. Some items I was able to return for refund; some I had to take as a sunk cost (but again, potentially usable in future renovation projects); Anyway, I could not ask for a better team in CEO Ramin and Project Manager Ari. They were thorough, flexible, and patient in our multiple discussions and meetings (in person/via zoom/text/calls) -- with the numerous issues that inevitably come up during construction projects (both expected and unforeseen). They always provided me options on ways to tackle with pros/cons and costs, including drawings for clarity. I really appreciated we could together think outside the box to solve problems. Their invoicing system also was very helpful with detailed descriptions and progress to date, with the convenience of being able to pay by click of a button. LESSON: I learned the hard way NOT trust a fancy-looking website, even one with great reviews! Hard to tell sometimes with rating sites, but do your research on your potential GC. I for one felt CaliBuilder has more than come through with my expectations and needs that I already know I will be reaching out to them for future renovations, and I have recommended them unreservedly to friends and family. A year and a half after I started working with Calibuilder, I'm glad that we worked with them, and satisfied with the final result. I would gladly refer them to our friends who want to remodel or build a custom home. For background, we have been working with a full service architecture studio to renovate and extend our home. The project architect had many nice ideas and thoughtful designs, and we were looking for a reasonably priced contractor who could (and would be willing to) communicate with a detail-oriented architect. We had already tried a contractor that, while reasonably priced, had difficulty and unwillingness to communicate with the architect and follow their guidelines. Alternative contractors who had experience with full service architects were either 50-100% more expensive or had a very long wait time to start or finish the house. When Ramin, the CEO of CaliBuilder was introduced to us, he understood and appreciated the custom and artful nature of our project from the get-go. He was passionate about good design, and loved all the details provided by the architect, viewing it as an advantage to reduce ambiguity in planning and execution of the project. The project architect was also very happy with the open communication style, responsiveness, and the fact that when facing an issue they would reach out to the architect with a "Request For Information", as opposed to deciding and executing on their own. All this was at the same time as providing an affordable price, a flexible timeline, and a commitment to finish the project on-time. The project was staffed almost round the clock, with various crews and subcontractors working in parallel as long as they were able to not step on each other's toes. CaliBuilder accepts a handful of projects in the Bay Area at any time, therefore their very nice site supervisor (Ari) can dedicate a good amount of high quality management for each project. CaliBuilder's awesome finish supervisor (Azeen) also spends high quality time on the job site, working with their crew and the architect to understand and execute on every detail of the project. Both Ari and Azeen have great rapport with their crew and have a good sense of what could be delegated to them and what needs their deeper involvement at the execution time. As with any construction project, there are always imperfections and mistakes. What matters is the ability of the builder to understand the reason for issues and take immediate remedial steps. CaliBuilder was great in this regard too. For example, when the newly installed Heat Pump malfunctioned on a cold winter Friday evening, they took immediate action, dispatching their crew to investigate and address the issue. CaliBuilder demonstrated their commitment to addressing raised issues throughout the project. To help with a smooth execution, here's my advice to the future clients of CaliBuilder: Make sure you communicate with the team (architect + builder) often, and respond to their questions early. Also make sure material is available and stored properly well in advance. Not blocking the crew is CaliBuilder's key to an affordable and high quality execution. If you are building a custom home, work with your architect and CaliBuilder to distinguish "typical" work vs "custom/uncommon" work, so everyone can be on the same page about sequencing and details of the work. For example, everyone knows how to sheetrock, mud, and paint a wall. So no specific sequencing guidance is needed. But if you are installing a light fixture or ceiling cladding that is not commonly installed, it's important to work as a team to ensure that subs/crew get the sequencing right. Trust the builder if they are asking you to stay away from certain materials or methods. They know their crew and subs the best. Work with the architect to find alternatives that the builder is comfortable with. Don't push with time. If the project is behind schedule for any reason, work with CaliBuilder to get an updated estimate of completion. But don't push your builder to change their practices and have many crews work at the same time. Out of the "time, quality, cost" triangle, you can only optimize two. Overall, I'm very happy that we had the opportunity to work with CaliBuilder, wish them success, and look forward to seeing their future projects. read more

We had a very good tenant for 23 years in this 1bdrm/1bthrm unit at Woodlake. When he moved out, it was time to do a complete renovation. After interviewing 10 different contractors, there were only two really worth trusting with this project. I chose CaliBuilder because they demonstrated a keen eye for the work that needed to be accomplished and took the time to understand what I wanted. They were willing to work with my budget, and even though hidden problems were later discovered which increased the final cost, they were willing to work with us and change the work order with reasonable adjustments. Calibuilder is helping me with major renovations on a two unit property I recently purchased. I couldn't have asked for better partners on this journey. Not only are they trusted advisors but I now consider the whole team friends. Ramin, Azeen, and Arash are knowledgeable, honest, and overall great people. Throughout the entire process they've demonstrated that they have my best interests in mind. Built in 1911, my property was in pretty bad shape. I interviewed 5 contractors (narrowed down from a list of 10 from yelp reviews, referrals, etc.) before making my decision. My primary selection criteria were price, vision/expertise, and someone who'd be a true partner. Overall costs were an important factor. Calibuilder was competitively priced- not the cheapest, nor most expensive option. Construction is not my field of expertise so most important to me was having a true partner. I needed someone I could trust and lean on. That's exactly what I got with Calibuilder starting with my first meeting with Ramin. He listened to my thoughts and provided recommendations and multiple options. As can be expected when working with such an old building, there were some surprises and bumps along the way. I really wanted to leave a stellar review for Calibuilder. I really did. But I didn't have a stellar experience. I wish I had the same experience as some of the other reviewers. Sure, he uses slack and other techy ways of communicating other contractors don't use... but I had issues reaching him when there were questions that needed to be answered. There was bad communication throughout the project, last minute messages to me about material I needed to get (as opposed to the scheduling another reviewer noted) and communications between myself to Ramin, then from him to the foreman that didn't get passed along. Perhaps my experience would have been different if, as promised upfront, Ramin would have brought in qualified tradesmen for each aspect of my project. Maybe if he would have used the tradesmen that came in to bid on different aspects of my project I wouldn't have had the issues I had. My new (squeaky, bowing under my weight) stairs only a couple months old that weren't installed properly, because maybe Ramin wanted to save a few bucks and paid his foreman to do them instead of the floor guy that bid on it. This was typical of my entire project. Two guys (expertise = framing, per the project manager) basically did the entire job (excluding tile guys). No floor guys coming in. No electricians. No plumbers. No painters. They would all come in to bid on the work, but I never saw them again. Just the two guys from start to finish. I can only assume he got a better deal to do the work from his foreman and his laborer. Of course this meant lackluster results in the fine touches needed for the finishing aspect of a job. Several rounds of me putting blue tape pointing out issues. Several rounds of the same guys coming to fix them. Until I complained hard enough at the end of the project they sent A painter to actually get some straight lines or fix the cracking crown moulding that looked like it was found in someone else's scrap yard and reused on my project, or a qualified tile guy to fix the fireplace tiles the foreman broke, or someone else to replace the new cabinet drawer fronts the foreman damaged while installing handles and tried to hide.... and then damaged again when replacements came in. Not to mention the windows that were placed incorrectly based on the blueprint, or a french door that I need to slam to close. So many things keep me from wanting to leave a good review. I really wanted to. But I didn't have a great experience. Final straw for me leaving this review is my stairs were installed by someone who doesn't know what he is doing. This was pointed out by a professional floor guy that came out to see what the problem was only 3 months after my job was done. He pointed out wedge supports placed underneath stairs with finishing nails holding them in place, gaps between stair tread and risers, nails that shouldn't be used for finishing and 1/4 round trim that was hiding all of these imperfections. He told me "this is faulty installation and should have been addressed during installation" . Refusal to fix these issues (not a problem with the stair framing, as verified by the floor guy that came out) is unacceptable. Sending the same guy that installed them and is not qualified to do such a job to fix his work is not acceptable. Calling out "bad framing" AFTER I complained about squeaky, bowing steps with gaps and construction nails going through a stair tread and covered up is not good business, when this is something that should have been pointed out DURING installation. At the very least, it shows poor quality of work, lack of project managing, and attention to detail. Also, setting a payment schedule, then asking for money before that scheduled payment so you can pay your guys is totally unprofessional and bad business. I haven't even gone into the other aspects... cutting/installing sheetrock and not walling off the existing part of the house we are trying to live in, coming home to a cloud of dust, everything covered in sheetrock dust, my 4 year olds toys, our couches, furniture, etc.... The fence that blew down this last storm because they didn't replace it back to it's original state when they were done...I could go on and on. read more

I'd choose Calibuilder again and again if I needed to do it all over. - We wanted an open ceiling but we didn't have enough time to wait for a permit. Ramin was the only one who came up with a plan that made impossible things possible - by having a somewhat see-through ceiling. We didn't end up getting that for some other reason but i was very impressed by the way how he strives to meet his client's requirement. And this was BEFORE we decided to work with him - After we signed contract with him, he still impressed me with his honesty - there were a couple of times when we had some ad-hoc projects, the price he offered was still very competitive and work was done great. - Ramin had a little accident on another project when we had a lot of ad-hoc work to do before our staff could move in. After a month into the project, I couldn't be happier with my selection. One of the nightmares of any project is having to chase down the general contractor to get any work done. Not an issue with Ramin. From the day that we decided to go with him, he was clear and concise with his communication and worked with us to build out a project plan. We decided to be in the house during the remodel and his crew have been professional and accommodating building the necessary temporary walls ensuring we be as comfortable as possible. This review is based purely on my attempt to have them come out and give us a bid for the house we just purchased. For some background, I had called and spoken to CaliBuilder back in March 2021 about a kitchen renovation for a house we were considering buying. The phone consultation was done extremely well and left a lasting impression on me. At the very last minute, we ended up getting into a bidding war for that house and decided to keep looking. Because the phone consultation for that house had gone so well, I made a mental note to use CaliBuilder once we do purchase a home and need work. In the meantime, I even recommended them to 4 neighbors who needed a contractor with good communication skills. Fast forward to July, we have purchased a home and are ready to do some extensive interior work. Unfortunately, communication has gone downhill since my last experience with them. They responded to my inquiry on Yelp and told me they would contact me last Friday. I gave them a time frame and waited, no call. It is now Tuesday and I have messaged them again to check in on my request and still no response. I understand it is a very busy time for contractors right now but all the other contractors I reached out to have not only called me back but they have already come by for a proposal and walk through. If I have this much difficulty getting them to return my request for a walk through and bid, I can't imagine how hard it would be to get updates/communicate if I had signed on. read more

We reached out to over 20 general contractors to request quotes for the house. Most contractors don't even reply - those that do, never come around to giving you a final number on paper, broken down to tasks. But Ramin was a breath of fresh air. I emailed him Wednesday, he reviewed site on Thursday, we met on Friday - and we had a formal quote on Sunday! All within 5 days. I had contracted with Made Renovation to remodel a bathroom and they set us up with CaliBuilder. Most of our contact was with Azeen, who was very responsive and professional. We had a few hiccups with the project (some down to MR not understanding the requirements of our city for the plans, and at least one due to misinterpretation of the plan) - and of course the inevitable COVID related delays. But CaliBuilder didn't abandon us - even when it took four months for the city to issue the permit! - and got the job done, including coming back a week after completion for a couple of tweaks. I want to flag the effort they made to keep our (mostly open plan) house dust free too, including zippered plastic curtains and lots of protective paper. We had Calibuilder come in to replace our tile countertop and backsplash as well as fit new sink & cooktop and update our light fixture to recessed lighting. They were one of four quotes we had and they were well-priced. Not the cheapest but based on reviews and research, they seemed the best value for money. And they were. It took a total of four working days to get the job done with fabrication etc. Azeen was a single point of contact for any questions or concerns and she was there everyday to check the quality of the work done by the contractors. They were efficient, clean, very approachable and professional. They went above and beyond, helping us out by picking up some of the larger materials such as countertop slabs even though it was out of their way and would keep us updated on Slack. We had one very minor issue with a cracked tile, and they came next day to fix it even though I probably could have lived with it. Great service, great people to work with. read more

I recently had my kitchen updated with new flooring, cabinets, and counters. I was assigned to this company from another company, and I'm glad I was because they were great. During this time period, construction companies are so busy, most didn't want my job because it was "too small". Ramin and his group were great to work with and really did good work. I recently completed new additions(a master bedroom,a bathroom,walk-in closet and a laundry,entrance area expansion). I obtained six bids. CaliBuilder was second lowest. But I chose them because they provided detailed construction schedule and also payment schedule which convinced me they were reliable. Yes they were. Ramin was good at reviewing the drawings to find issues before construction. Unfortunately the drawings had several construction issues because of tight setback requirements. I was glad they notified me the issues so that I could contact the architect to correct the drawings to avoid unnecessary costs. Project manager,Ali was very easy to communicate and respond me back immediately so that any changes could be implemented in timely manner. And the prices for any change orders I requested were pretty reasonable. Their finish crews were pretty good as well. Especially I liked painter and stone installers.
