Hey!! This place is pretty cool and never noticed this place even existed! My husband and I always said "We don't have any Whole Foods type of stores here... just a Trader Joe's around the corner." Well guess what? California Heights Market is like a mini version of Whole Foods. They serve a lot of quality and organic products + other amazing things you can find.. like aged meat, sushi, infused olive oils, a spice shop, bread, sandwiches, nursery and *drum rolls* beer on tap! Such a small market packed with so many great things AND they have upstairs and outside seating!! I can see parking getting a little tough here on busier days as it does seem to be in the busier part of Castro Valley with all the other eateries you can find outside of the California Heights Market. I can't wait to come back here because they do have a ton of cool organic beauty products that are great for those who have really sensitive skin but can get a little pricey! read more

I wish I could give these guys less than a star. Been coming here for 12 years. Bought some beers, went back and told them they were oxidized, dude says, "oh I'll tell our vendor" as I'm trying to buy another pack of beers. I didn't ask for a discount, refund, nothing. Gave it a week. Went back and bought another pack of beers. Asked the guy " oh did you talk to the vendor ", nothing. Dude basically said "oh there's not much we can do". Uh yeah there is. Como the customer the $15 pack of beer he's trying to buy since the other he bought was no good. You call yourself a neighborhood market, maybe try acting like one. You're telling me if I bought a bottle of wine and came back and said "hey it was corked", you would do nothing? I will never buy here ever again. They sell my favorite jerky here, Long Beach Beef Jerky Co., the only place I can get it when I am in Long Beach. Fell in love with it after finding it at a bar in the Long Beach Airport once, and could never find it again. I contacted the company and thankfully was directed to California Heights Market, close to my sister's home! Such a cute little store, with great art on the building. Besides my jerky, this market has so many unique beverages and candies. Everyone working has been so friendly every time I've visited. It's so LB, makes me feel home. Had to stop here to get a Pliny; it's such a rare find, so they only sell one bottle per person. Friendly staff and AMAZING SUPPLY of wine and beer! Be careful in the back parking lot area. Stopped here with my boyfriend on the way home. Parked in the back parking lot area. Went inside, got what we wanted, and left. When walking back to the parking lot to get to the car, an SUV pulled up with a few guys inside. The guy in the passenger seat of this SUV rolled down the window and started staring at another woman who was trying to enter the store. He was trying to talk to her, and was cat calling her! OMG! He was totally harassing this customer, which could have easily been me! I quickly got into our car and locked the door! Good grief! I drive past this place all the time on the way to my brother's house, but, did I ever stop to check it out? No. Am I an idiot for not wanting to see what was in here? Yes, definitely. When I parked my car in the back and walked to the front of the shop, I saw a sign with an arrow pointing in that direction in the shape of a beer bottle that read 'Cal Hts Mkt FUN,' so I knew I was in for a treat. For a Wednesday at 6PM, there was a steady stream of customers in this small shop. With only 3 aisles to choose from, I was stoked to find out that two out of the three was all beer and wine. The best part? IT WAS ALL GOOD BEER & WINE! There are craft beers galore. I probably spent 25 minutes walking up and down the aisles, just looking at the labels and their selection. Although I came in with the intent of finding a bottle of Pliny the Elder, I knew it wasn't going to happen. I had a chit-chat with the owner of the shop after I asked for his personal recommendations on an IPA or double IPA (and getting a definite 'nope!' on Pliny), and he led me to the fridge. In my hands were Knee Deep Brewing Company's Hop Shortage TRIPLE IPA and Avery Brew Company's Maharaja imperial IPA, and a guarantee from the owner that his goal is to get me drunk at home. Was he right? Yes. The beers were some of the best IPAs I've ever had, and I'm glad I took his word! Even though I didn't find a bottle of Pliny, he did have some of Russian River's other drinks, which meant that they definitely get shipments every now and then. I think I've found myself a favorite new liquor store, and hope to land myself a bottle one of these days! read more

Not your typical corner liquor store, it is a cool little store with a small walk in humidor and walk in cooler w/ hundreds of IPA's. I usually go for the liquor (cognac/whisky/rum) infused cigars which are pretty decent sticks. Definitely a must if you're into IPA. read more

This is pretty much my go-to spot and just happens to be halfway between the gym and my house so its a perfect pit stop on the way home. Raza and Cesar are always helpful, they always point out anything thats new on the shelf or a good IPA, since that's primarily what I drink. They have a great selection and are good about getting seasonal rarities. If you don't see what you're looking for, just ask and they'll let you know if its something they can get or around what time of year it's available. They definitely know their beers and what most people haven't mentioned is that they also have a nice walk-in cigar humidor with a great cigar selection. I've come to this place a few times before. I use to work not too far from here and have lived in the area for most of my life. As a matter of fact, I went to both Longfellow Elementary and Hughes Middle School. An old customer of mine told me to check out this place for their large selection of IPAs and Sours, as well as the well informed staff. The first time I came here I bought Outstanding. The next time I bought Delirium. The time after that, I simply bought ice cream for my girlfriend and I. On July 30th, I came to this place looking for beer or wine to give to a friend for her 21st birthday. I went in not knowing what to get, so I had been browsing for no longer than a 3 minutes when the guy working there asked, "Have you been here before? You look familiar." I said, "Well I work nearby, maybe you've been to my store?" "No, I don't think so. Sorry." As strange as that was, I continued browsing the shelves. I'm not too familiar with wine so I was looking for a sweet wine. No more than 5 minutes passed and the guy walks up to me with an extended hand and said, "With all due respect," shook my hand, and unexpectedly said, "but I'm going to have to ask you to leave." I asked, "why?" and was about to raise hell when all he could say was, "I just have a feeling," but I refrained and obliged. I called back and asked for a proper explanation and this guy had the audacity to say that he had a hunch I was bad news, but can try another time and shop there. What kind of business practice is that? Thanks for profiling me. I was wearing a black v-neck, with some jeans, and a snapback. I understand that I may not look like your average clientele that looks for craft beer and wine. I am, however, an articulate and college educated young man who can voice my distaste for instances like this. read more

This is a great liquor store. The architecture alone is so old skool LBC. But what really separates this place is their beer selection. The owner does a very nice job stocking the shelves with great stuff that you would be hatd pressed to find many places. Plus, they are willing to order something for you, if you ask. 10 years ago when I lived half a block away from this place I would walk there with my toddler, buy a tall can, smokes, shrug my shoulder at the small deli counter in the back and perhaps play a video game or two in the odd Arcade Patio while my son played with the little plastic alien vending machine chotchkie he was obsessed with collecting. This place was nice then but nothing to really yelp about. I don't even think Al Gore had even invented the internet by that point. For the last half a year I've been picking up the same son, almost a teenager now, after school and sometimes we meet at the Cal Heights Market. He grabs a sour punch or now n later inside but I didn't discover what exactly was inside till last week based off a friend's suggestion of "Have you seen how many beers that place has?". What my friend should have said was...."Hey! Have you ever walked through that corners store's door, plunged into a cornucopia, quivering with desire and the ecstasy of unbridled avarice only to wake two hours later and find you still haven't selected a beer yet?" So many choices, half of them actually chilled and not just the top sellers. Charming and patient customer service. Holy crap... there is a lot of beer here! Local breweries, international delights of all kinds.. if you love beer, this is the place for you. Not only do they have a huge selection on the shelves, there are a ton of bottles refrigerated and ready to go. Service is friendly, prices are very fair. Stopped by this morning looking for vermouth (sunday night is Mad Men night, which means Manhattans!). I walked in and saw that there was nothing behind the counter, so I walked through the isles. I noticed that they had a decent selection of beer and wine, but then went back up front and asked the guy if they carried vermouth. His answer: "I find it funny that people look around and then ask if there is any hard liquor. Do you see any hard liquor?" No, I don't, which is why I was asking. A polite, "Sorry, we don't carry hard liquor, you can try the store down the street" would have been fine. I do like beer, especially tripels and saisons, but I don't think I'll ever buy anything from here. The Wine Country has an excellent beer selection and they have polite and friendly service. Eddie's down the street are extremely friendly and I stop there for chips, drinks, lottery tickets, and ice cream sandwiches because of their neighborhood friendliness. Actually, I went to Eddie's first, and they didn't carry the brand of sweet vermouth that I wanted. Her response,"If you want, I can order some for you?" In any case, poor customer service means no customer in my book. So, I don't think i will ever go to Cal Heights Market again. Liquor stores are ubiquitous in Long Beach (I eventually found vermouth at the one across the street from Trader Joe's). If I want attitude I'll go to Chuck-E-Cheese and eavesdrop on some tweeners talking to their parents, rather than get it from the clerk at Cal Heights Market. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Addendum (4/29/13, see owner comment below): WTF? I guess insulting me more is a business strategy: " If you are enough educated , you must read the sign of the business that it is not a liquor store, It is a just a market." I guess I'm not educated enough to be a customer there. To respond and be "honest" and tell the full story: after he insulted me the first time, he then insulted me again and said, "I see customers look around for 10 minutes and then ask me where the vodka is? If I had liquor, it would be behind the counter, everybody knows that. I find it funny that customers look around and then ask me these questions." To which I replied, "I don't work at a liquor store. I don't know the laws and regulations. I see hard liquor on the shelves at other stores." As I was pulling away in my car, he yelled to me to try Eddie's (which I went to first because they are nice to their customers) and then told me to go to some place in Artesia. So, yes, he was helpful after he insulted me twice. Then, after I wrote my yelp review, he insulted me a third time by telling me that I wasn't "enough educated".
