My hair is pretty weird - lots of different textures, with cowlicks and crowns all over. I'd never been to a curly-hair specialist before. I needed a haircut, so I made an appointment. Jessica was friendly and full of information which she readily shared with me in the "consultation" phase of the appointment. But some of it was such a crock that I couldn't believe she was saying it. Totally unscientific. She spent about ten minutes on the cut, picking up locks and snipping them, in no order and never checking for length or shape. (I' not sure how you'd do that if you don't comb out wet hair, so I'm willing to give her that this is a very different way of cutting hair, but I went home with no appearance of having had a haircut.) I get SO nervous before haircuts! My curls are 3B and I'm trying to grow out my hair, while also giving it lots of volume and shape. I told Jessica these goals and she assured me that she would not take off length and just add layers. My hair went from a "broom" (all pieces the same length) to more of a "canopy" (seamless layers). My hair has always been wavy. I've been cutting it in layers and blow-drying it forever. I've basically had the same haircut since the 80's. So...I decided after decades of the same hair I needed a new look: I grew my hair long, and grew out the layers. I was introduced to the "Curly Girl Method" a couple of months ago, which seemed like a good way to stop with all the blow-drying and let its natural curl come through. But I had a big glitch - my circa-1980's BANGS! No matter what I tried, they looked stupid. I tried them straight, I tried them curly, I tried brushing them to the side...nothing worked. UGH! Also, I had no curls on top of my head! It all looked great starting from about 5 inches down, but it was flat as a pancake on top. And these dumb ol' bangs. I kept hearing about Deva cuts...thought I'd give it a try. I googled for a Deva cut specialist and found Jessica at the California Styles salon, and booked an appointment. She spent nearly 90 minutes with me, and showed me all kinds of tricks,,,but the main thing was, she talked me into letting my bangs grow out, and showed me how to incorporate them into my curls until they do. And she showed me how to use twirling sections and plastic clips to get height and curls on my crown. And various other tips and tricks. I got this cut last week and...I'M ECSTATIC! I have full, soft, bouncy curls all over my head, including the crown. I have never loved my hair this much! And I now know how to style it with minimal effort. I admit I was skeptical of the whole Deva Cut thing...cutting your hair while it's dry? But I'm now a believer! Jessica knows curly hair, and will help you get the most out of your curls. read more

This method of cutting hair didn't work for me. I have wavy/loosely curly hair. I asked for layers but ended up with a shag-style cut that is difficult to fit into ponytails due to the very short layers. I could be OK with a shag, but this one was very choppy and uneven. Most of the appointment was spent washing and styling my hair, which I didn't necessarily need help with, very little on the actual cut itself. Didn't care for the hair products. Very expensive ($125) for a haircut that will take a long time to grow out. read more

I am new to the area and had made the decision to stop fighting my hair and embrace what it was wavy/curly. I searched high and low for salons in the area that specialized in curly hair, there are only a few. Oddly enough California Styles didn't show up in yelp when I searched for curly hair salon. I found them on another website. Anyway, I can't tell you how happy I am with my hair!! Jessica was amazing. My hair was past the middle of my back. I had an ombre bayalage that went from red to blonde that was beautiful at the time, but now severely grown out. I had a good couple inches of grow out. That being said I did want to cut my hair short and that was good because I wanted to go to a more natural one color look for my curls. After some discussion we decided the best route would be to put a glaze on. It turned out perfect.
