You can see Calkins Creamery products all along the Delaware river. When we saw the creamery had their own store, we were excited to visit. It might've been the day we came, but it was so muddy getting into the creamery. I was worried to drive in and our car would get stuck... I don't think this is any fault of theirs as it was just a rainy, muddy day. The creamery store inside is very small. They have one fridge with cheeses and a sign that explains different tasting notes, and a small section of other goods. There is not much of an experience here, just a small shop where you can buy their cheeses on site. We got about four different cheeses that were excited to try, it was interesting to be able to visit the creamery. You can see cows in the barn as well. The views from the creamery are completely gorgeous. Probably a nice spot to visit on a sunny day! read more

This is a bit out of the way, but worth the trip. In the little cottage you can see the cheese making process at work, taste a wise sampling of their cheese, and even get to meet the cows. The cheese is delicious. There is something for everyone. Stopped here while camping in the area. The view is breath taking and the cheese is even better. Its a small shop to the right when you get to the farm, you can see them making cheese in the back. The employee was super helpful and let us sample a couple to make a decision they also ship around the state. We loaded up on a bunch of cheese but I will make sure I order more once I'm done. read more

A must visit if ever you are in the Honesdale area, and well worth the trip of you're not. My mom heard about this place from a friend, so we decided to stop in while we were on a drive in the area. Boy, am I glad we did. When we entered the little cheese shop, we were greeted SUPER cordially by the owner, who invited us to sit down at a little table they have in there and sample some of their cheeses. She came out with a generous sample plate of about every cheese they make, and graciously opened a bag of the crackers they also sell. On the house. It was more than just a snack, and all of the cheeses tasted superb. She also gladly answered all our questions. The creamery and shop is right next to the cow barn. We ended up buying a whole big bunch of cheese for family and friends. Great selection of craft cheeses. They also sell locally made maple syrup and jams. Ideal place to pick up gifts for a foodie friend. The hospitality shown to us left us flabbergasted. Genuine and warm, not just a put on sales pitch. Can't wait to visit again and bring some cheese back to Mass. to share with my friends. The farm may be in the "middle of nowhere", but it's a very scenic nowhere. After your visit, I also recommend eating at the Nuremberger Bierhaus a short drive away in Lake Ariel. Super friendly people, and the best sauerbraten I have ever eaten. read more

As we were visiting from Buffalo, NY, we made a point of stopping after having sampled cheeses from past visits to the area and from dining at local restaurants. We were unfamiliar with the back roads of Honesdale/Beach Lake area, but it was well worth the trip to the farm store. The farm and shop was spotless and everyone who worked there was terrific. We stocked up on plenty of delicious cheeses, and are still enjoying them (also some local honey). These are truly artisanal cheeses, and I highly recommend. read more

I finally found a special type of cheese I was looking for in the States. For some reason this type of cheese is only popular in Europe and not here. The English word for it is quark. The origin of this type of cheese is German, though being from Ukraine I never knew that. The cheese that is made by Emily, the owner of Calkins Creamery, is absolutely delicious. In Russian it is known as "tvorog". I found a few places in the States where I bought quark, but the quark from Emily is by far the best one I ever tasted (even in my home country). We are buying it from her periodically (once every two weeks or so) and it is being shipped to us by UPS. My baby loves it. I gave to him since he was about 7 month old. It is an organic product even though there is no stamp on it (we made a special trip to the farm to see their cows and the entire operation and ask about their practices). The packaging is impeccable and it always arrives cold and fresh on the next day after the order was placed. read more
