Cute cheese shop. The nice glass counters are waiting with cheese to eaten and brought home. There are also jams, honey, cured meats and etc to make a fabulous cheese plate or to give as gifts. The sandwiches ranged from 7- 10 dollars. I opted for a "Warm and Gooey" sandwhich. The Dutch came with a Cow's milk Gouda and a caramelized onion balsamic spread ($ 8.00). I added prosciutto ($ 10.00) because I'm not a fan of moderation. It was delicious. The sourdough bread was slightly tart and soft. Come hungry! If you aren't a fan of savory cheese, there is also ice cream at the shop. read more

Utter perfection. I've been here for three out of the past four days to get more of the Tarentaise cheese. A little info (that I looked up) about their Tarentaise: Vermont Tarentaise has been made by John Putnam from organic cow's milk at Thistle Hill Farm in Vermont since July 2002. Based on the Alpage-style cheese Abondance, Tarentaise is fairly firm and aged for at least six months. The flavor is grassy, nutty and buttery; as the wheels age in caves, the flavor becomes more assertive but keeps the ability to pair with almost anything I've tried it against the way Swiss does. Tarentaise was awarded the prestigious honor of "Best Farmstead Cow's Milk Cheese" at the 25th American Cheese Society Conference and, with over 45% butterfat, makes a perfect melting cheese as well! Medium-bodied, fruity red wines pair well with this cheese - try it with Pinot Noir or Cabernet Sauvignon. The Great Goat Sandwich is perfection. I pop next door to Jar'd and grab a glass of wine (usually a Blanc - something Citrusy & dry) and enjoy perfection. On a side note, although it's not on Bring Fido, Water Street Market is one of the most dog friendly areas of New Paltz. So Bring Fido & Enjoy! I know we certainly did. read more

Amazing little cheese shop!! Don't let the size of the place fool you, they know their cheeses here. They have a solid selection and a knowledgeable, friendly staff. Recently stumbled upon this gem while my wife was trying to find a gift of local origin for a coworker. After trudging through shop after shop of over priced chochkies (most not even made in U S never mind localy)I suggested a gift basket of cheese and a bottle of wine(no they do not sell wine). With some hesitation my wife followed me in and was imediately impressed not only by the look of the place but also the knowledge of the proprieter Kat. Kat made several suggestions as to content and what we should put together as a selection and was able to create a beautiful basket including 3 cheeses ,crackers , flat breads, chocolates ,small cheese board and utensil for serving well with in our budget. It was arranged and wrapped beautifuly . Not only was the basket a well received gift but I was a hero for the day If you go you have to try the Carmelized Gouda and the Tomini very different but very good. If you are not familiar with cheese relax you are in competent hands. read more

My bestie and I went to the Cheese Plate today to pick up the Three Year Gouda (often referred to as Crack Cheese). I hadn't been in since the new owners took over so I was excited to see the changes. I had been hearing many great reviews. I also decided to try a new cheese, Eden, based on the owners' recommendation. As soon as I sampled it I knew I had to have more. We also decided to have sandwiches. They now offer a full menu of cheese sandwiches. We went with the Smoked Cheddar/Apple and the Goat Cheese, Prosciutto, and Olive Tapenade. Both were really great and full of flavor. We each had half of each sandwich and both were declared delicious. We now plan to come at least once a month for sandwiches and cheese! read more

I love this place, I love its food, I love its furniture, I love its community, I love its chevre, I love its people.

So the Cheese Plate is connected to Artisan Sweets, and both places are great. I have yet to evolve into being a cheese and wine person, but I can still appreciate how great the little shop is. And, I can still tell you that the picnic baskets for cheese and wine dates are absolutely adorable, and I wish I could afford one, even if I never used it. I love the ideas the shop inspires haha. However, I did purchase a few truffles from Artisan Sweets, and the cashier very gracefully picked them out for me and put them in a nice little bag before I devoured them haha. My favorite was the coconut pyramid-it's dark chocolate and the coconut on the inside isn't hard and flaky like you usually get in those Russel Stover gift boxes, but it was creamy and delicious, as it should be. I also had the rose petal pomegranate one (because it's a top seller), and it was very good, as well as a cinnamon and cardamom one, which was also very good-sweet, dark, awesome. read more

Wonderful little snack/luncheon spot. Nice covered porch with partial views. Great spot to watch the bikers On rail trail go by. Delish local cheese and ice cream. A real treat! I highly suggest the cheese platter wich comes with bread, fruit, and nuts. Bring your own wine. read more

I popped in to see what the changes were since my last visit. The store is a lot bigger now but does not seem to have the same range of cheeses available as in the past plus what was available seemed a bit safe , there was nothing in the cases which really excited me and although the staff were friendly enough, they did not seem overly enthusiastic about the product. They seem to sell a lot more cheese "accessories' though. read more

I know that great cheese costs more than supermarket prices. Still, the prices here are astronomical. Even if you assume these exceptionally high prices are fair, the customer service should be equivalently exceptional. It is not even close. the people in the store are rude and inconsiderate. I understand that ownership recently changed. Regardless, the old owners were bad and the new owners are worse. I will not return to this shop. read more

Great shop in a great location. My wife and I enjoy strolling along the rail trail, having some cheese and chocolate in the Cheese Plate and then having cappucino at the Mud Puddle. Makes us feel continental. There is no way they have it this good in Paris. No. Way. The Cheese Plate will hook anyone up that either knows their cheese or doesn't. Me, I don't know cheese about cheese, but the staff there has given me outrageous morsels of cheeses that have made me smile. Cheese. Go figure. read more

The world is a beautiful place when you are sitting on the Water Street patio, with a view of the ridge, sharing a cheese plate with a friend or loved one. For about $13 you get three sizable pieces of either local or international cheese handpicked by the owners. They usually range in region, flavor, soft/hardness etc. and the owners explain the thought and care that went into each choice. The plates are served charcuterie style with nuts, candied fruits, tapenade, crackers and a baguette. Its a really fun snack and even filling enough to become a brunch or lunch. read more

Went here with my girlfriend and her family. You order the food from the counter and they serve it to you. They have an assortment of cheese plates and sandwiches. The only thing I wish is that they would heat your sandwich so the cheese melts. The cheese sandwiches are very tasty though. I got a smoked cheddar and apple slice sandwich and I enjoyed my dish very much. My girlfriend got gruyere, pear and mustard and she also enjoyed hers very much. They also have ice cream available for desert. If you are looking for a hearty dinner type meal, this is not the place for you. It is more of a perfect lunch/brunch place with light, good tasting food. The prices are average and the portion size is not outstanding but everything tastes really good and I would definitely go back. read more

I went to the Cheese Plate on my way back from a weekend in Albany with my girlfriend. What a great decision it was. We split the 5 cheesemongers choice, which he chose one hard cheese and four softs including one that was made locally. In addition we split a sandwich with sheeps cheese, a jam and olive tapenade. Located in the Water Tower shops area on Main Street New Paltz, this shop/cafe is a gem. The menu is based on delicious combinations of cheese, mustards and some meats such as prosciutto. There are cold sandwiches and grilled gooey hot ones. The sandwiches are cleverly named with ingredient descriptions that help you choose which one to try. Sandwiches are custom made and may take a little time, so the staff invites you to have a seat either inside or out and will deliver your order to you. While you are waiting, the retail offerings in the store are fun to peruse. They also offer a wonderful selection of cheese and bread for spontaneous picnic fare. Staff is friendly and helpful.
