This included removing the old roofing, decking, ridge beam and rafters; reframing the roof, hurricane strapping, re-decking and laying on a new Timberline roof. Overall, I couldn't be happier. Their crew was out bright and early a few days BEFORE what I was expecting (based on what was specified in the contract), and by the end of the first day, all the roofing and decking had been removed, picked up and was ready for disposal. The second day was miserable - rain on and off - and bless their hearts, instead of getting out of the rain, they stayed up on our workshop spreading a huge tarp I had over our belongings so they would not get wet, THEN they got themselves out of the weather. This, in my opinion, was "over and above" what I expected - especially when they did this several times that day. The third day was much better, and for the rest of the week - clear skies and a lot of work. By that Friday I had a new, stronger roof structure installed and decked out. Saturday, the cornice crew came out and trimmed out everything, installing new Hardee board soffits and fascia and the following Monday the roofers installed our new roof. They laid approximately 16-17 squares, and stayed with the job that day till it was completed. Tuesday was some minor clean-up, a final inspection and close-out. Would I hire them again? Most definitely - as a matter of fact, here's my comments on the second job John did for me . . . Job Date: 8/10/2012 Project cost: $9,000.00 Description of work: This was the second phase of our workshop rebuild. In this part, John's crew stripped the old siding and storm sheathing off my workshop's walls, installed new storm sheathing, Tyvek house wrap, trim and Hardie-Plank siding. They finished up by painting the workshop to match our house. My workshop was pretty much ruined during Hurricane Ike (6' floodwaters). I had started some remodeling and repair work shortly before the hurricane hit. I was removing old weathered T-111 siding, removing windows, reframing and installing new OSB storm sheathing. About half of the structure was in the new OSB storm sheathing when the storm hit. Unfortunately, due to the massive amount of damage sustained to our house, my workshop had to wait till now. By the time I was in a position to rebuild my workshop, all the "storm-chasers" and transient carpenters had moved on to other projects, and construction contractors were somewhat harder to find. I had recently heard about "Angie's List" and decided to give it a try - this is where I found John's "Green Leaf Contracting" company. John's crew restored my workshop in two phases. First phase, which I've already reported on, consisted of rebuilding our roof structure and installing a new 50 year Timberline roof. This last phase involved stripping all the remaining old siding and storm sheathing down to the wall studs, installing all new storm sheathing, wrapping the entire structure in "house-wrap" moisture barrier, installing Hardie-Plank lap siding and painting the entire workshop. What was nice about this phase was we had some concerns about leaving open areas in the walls overnight (vandalism). I expressed these concerns and John's crew made sure the building was secure every evening before leaving the job site. As with any construction job, there is always going to be some clean-up afterwards and his crew did what I thought was an exceptional job of cleaning up. I had jokingly referred to my workshop rebuild as my "Sow's ear to Silk Purse Project". John's crews really did pull it off!

They came out to our property and agreed where to put the barn. We signed the proposal and it all went down hill from there. The first line item- base supplied by the owner- we had issues after they originally told us it would be $300-400. We ended up paying $1500. The next line item- they drill 3' post holes as per the contract- they asked us for an additional $2600 because they were having trouble drilling through our lime rock and the owner threw a fit and even called us ignorant for not knowing what was 3' below the surface. First of all, they didn't even take a soil sample, or request one to be done before starting the project. We do live in Leander, TX, which that is a known fact of this entire hill country area being on rocky soil. We have dug over 30 holes by shovel ourselves all over our land for post holes and trees with zero issue. They sent a "change order" for the additional $2600. At this point we decided to tell them that this was not a time and materials contract where we fix everything for their misjudged project proposal like they were trying to change already every step of the way and called them out on being in breech of contract. Change Orders shouldn't come from the contractor, it's not a change we requested. I am very certain that if we were to continue with this company, they would request additional funds every step of the way. Currently they are still holding our deposit and will not return it. Extremely unprofessional, disrespectful, and deceitful. DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY!

As much as I would love to leave this business a 5 star review, I am unable to do so. I've followed…read morethis company for many years before finally committing to have my dream barn built. Given the prices charged by Barns and Buildings, as well as the handful of positive reviews I could find, I thought for sure I would have a positive experience. However, to my dismay, it has not been positive. While there are many things I love about the barn they built, there continue to be on going issues I cannot get resolved. Steve Slivinski has been unwilling to honor the warranty provided on the build in its entirety. I have been attempting for 16 months to get mistakes fixed and they remain unresolved. The biggest issue I am dealing with is incorrect drainage for the wash stall that was installed. Rather than the concrete being sloped to the back of the wash stall where the drain was placed, the entire wash stall slopes to the front, completely in the opposite direction of the drain. This results in all of the water pouring out of the front of the wash stall and flooding the barn walkway, as well as the entry into the tack room. I have proposed multiple ways to address the situation and still have no resolution. Steve has been out twice to grind the concrete slab in hopes of getting the water directed to the drain but as of his final visit approximately 10 months ago, it still floods the walkway and tack room entrance. Steve continues to ignore my requests for resolution and ignores me for weeks at a time. Then he sends a text message letting me know he's too busy to address it right now. He has also stated he has held up his end of the workmanship warranty with the bit of ineffective grinding he has done. At this point, it appears I will either have to pay out of pocket to hire a new contractor to rip it out and fix it or file a lawsuit. I do have video of the ongoing drainage issues I was hoping to share, unfortunately google only allows photos to be posted. I also encourage anyone using this company to read the contract very very carefully. I was informed after signing the contract that the tack room did not actually include a ceiling. I was charged extra to add a ceiling. I'm not sure in what universe a room does not include a ceiling but for this company it does not. Additionally, when I realized there were items in the contract that were not part of the plans (for example, a sliding barn door) I was told that was not included in the price that I was quoted. So any errors or omissions always went in Barns and Buildings favor. I was charged more on multiple occasions for things that were not included but they never credited me for things that appeared that should not have been present. I have no doubt someone from Barns and Buildings will be here to blame me as the customer and to justify their position. Sadly, the truth is I've paid a small fortune for a barn that has an unusable wash stall, that has Dutch doors that don't open and close correctly, and other issues I won't bother listing here. My dream barn has sadly turned into a bit of a nightmare. Do your due diligence and be very very careful. While they will come and fix small, cheap warranty issues, they will not appropriately remedy large costly workmanship issues. And now I wait for the company's response to justify their lack of customer support and blame me for all of the issues. I will however update this post if I do ever get true resolution of the issues.

Moving along, I gave Rick a call based on a recommendation from another company who couldn't meet the timeline we needed the repairs done. To me, that says a lot about a person. His competitors are supplying him with business, so now their reputation is on the line too. Rick was great about following up with me and scheduling the work within a few days. He called ahead to let me know he was on the way and got right to work. While I don't know the technicalities of repairing a door frame, I do know about people skills and apparently he has both. He was patient with my daughter when she rushed over almost touching the wet paint, he was friendly and polite. Overall, I'm very pleased with his work and appreciate that he asked for feedback before he left. Working with the general public isn't always easy and you have to possess specific qualifications to come into a stranger's home and put them at ease. Amongst everyone contacted me, Kirby seemed more genuine and professional in the replies. Time went by with another artic freeze last December. Ok, time to revisit my request. I messaged Kirby on Yelp. He remembered our conversation and replied right away, as usual. After I sent him the pictures, he quickly replied with a quote. Then, he agreed to show up on my day off. My husband wanted me to fix the front door since the freeze we all endured over 10 years ago. I tried my DIY fix from foam patch to stuck some towels, to seal the seams with packing tape to adding a drape... Yaddi yadda. Ok. Time to call a professional. Because it's an exterior door, it has to be fiberglass door because steel door will conduct temperature from outside. Hot out hot in and cold out cold in. No lying. I researched before agreed to get it installed. Also, because of the door frame had been badly damaged with years of abuse from the weather, everything has to go. I was told by some carpenters who wanted to just replace out the bad piece of door frame with a piece of wood plank. No way, José. I was so glad that I refused to get another DIY person's work and getting charged for a professional price. According to Kirby, his Mr. Handyman Kirby business has been handed down from his grandfather to his father... for generations. Kirby specializes in doors, drywall repairs and other handyman's tasks. He was professional and polite. My neighbor came by to inquire about his business. I had to give them his card and information. He gave 100% of his attention to my project. That's very important. So, he won't get distracted and delay my project. I really appreciate his policy in taking care of his clients. Guess what, I'm going to enlarge his business card and tape it to my door.
