A very disappointing experience. I travelled in from out of town to take care of funeral arrangements. 1) When we met with Lupita, she said I could view the body, but at the end of the meeting she said I couldn't because the person responsible wasn't there. 2) Lupita said she would call to set up a time but did not. When I called the next morning, she said she had called and set up a time, but I missed the time. Lupita said she would call me back, but never returned my call. I was unable to view since we had to leave the following day to get back to work. 3) We were not notified that there was a delay in both the cremation and obtaining the urns; I called about a month and a half after cremation and urns were supposed to be completed/ready. I was told Lupita no longer worked there and was asked if anyone had notified us of the delays. No one had; I was told it would be another two months before the urns would be available (supply issues for the specific urn ordered). The representative indicated they would reach out to me to confirm a time to mail the urn to me at their cost (as Lupita had not told us there was a cost for mailing the urn (Postal Service regulation) 4) It has been another two months, so I called back three times here just this past week and did not receive a call back. I was notified by a relative that they had picked up the urns. (I presume Callaghan's had called the relative and not me) So, Callaghan did not honor their commitment to mail me the urn. Since we do not near Livermore, it may be some time before we can get up there to pick up the urn. I see that BBB has given them an A+, but I would suggest shopping around as in this instance, they were not caring, concerned or committed to even keep me in the loop as to what was happening and honoring their commitment. read more

We had to bury our daughter and this place was amazing. They were helpful, professional, and respectful. They made the process less painful. From a police escort through town, to the service, and then the reception. Lupita was just wonderful!!! Would recommend them for sure!! Even with some unfortunate events, that should never have happened with other guests, she kept her composure handling everything so well. In the weeks leading up to the service she answered my many calls and texts quickly and knowledgeably. In reference to the previous review the hinge was broken by the friend. My mother received a sympathy card in the mail today that was really an advertisement for their services. My brother died a year ago and Callaghan Mortuary took care of him... The card basically said sorry for your loss on this anniversary but we can take care of any other of your funeral needs... It was fishing for more business. I found this disgusting and distasteful. You can imagine the pain a mother experiences losing a child. This was gross and hurtful especially on the first anniversary of his death. read more

I have never had to deal with any mortuary prior to calling around to help my best friend find a place to have her baby cremated. As you can imagine this has been a very challenging time for the entire family. I was blessed when I called Callaghan Mortuary and Kerianne picked up the phone. This was right before the Thanksgiving holiday, and Kerianne answered all the questions, and concerns we had. She helped me get everything done without disturbing my friend who was still in the hospital recovering. Fast forward to today, everything has been finalized for the beautiful baby my friend lost. We recently lost our family member to a car accident. The loss was very traumatic since,it was so sudden. Deanna was the person who helped us and she was great! She was very sympathetic and took great care in helping us plan the funeral, making sure that all of our needs for our loved one were met. We were also able to have the funeral live on zoom as one of the family members was still in the hospital and not able to attend. The staff were very helpful and attentive as well. Had a horrible experience at this mortuary with Lupita at my daughters funeral service. She actually yelled at me and my best friend in front of my reception guests and accused my friend of breaking the hinge on my daughter's casket screaming "you broke MY casket, you need to leave ". She went on to say that shed get fired and shed have to pay for the hinge. But why?? My son in law had already purchased the casket and paid for a disposal fee. It wasnt her casket, not to mention the hinge wasnt broken. She then proceeded to lock my best friend out of the building in front of my guests!!! While my friend and i were locked out of the building, she apparently performed a "casket closing ceremony" WITHOUT me and my husband. In addition, during the week leading up to the ceremony, she was very rude to my husband when he called to inquire about flower delivery. Lupita exhibited outrageously inappropriate behavior at my daughters funeral and ruined it. Please think twice about using them. read more

Callaghan Mortuary made what was the worst time of my life less stressful. One can not even imagine how hard it was to lose my husband of 27+ years and so suddenly, and when I tell you, Deanna was truly amazing. She was more kind and patient and empathetic than I could have ever asked for and the staff that works with her there, and I mean every one of them followed suit. They laughed with me and shared my tears all while doing the job in the most honest and professional way you could ever hope for. The truth is I will never forget what they did for me and my entire family in my greatest time of need. This review is the least I can do for them. Deanna made sure I was treated with dignity and respect as well as the love of my life that passed away. My husband. She never let me worry about the way they put him to rest, even offering to play music for him as he awaited his day. If you can find better, I absolutely doubt it. I would trust Callaghan with myself and that while the thought is not something that is an easy thing to think of is a fact. The customer service never stopped even going the extra mile to get the death certificates when there was an error. They never wavered from that impeccable treatment even after the service was done. Thank you, Deanna, and all at Callaghan Mortuary for everything you have done for me and my entire family through my loss. You will always hold a place in my heart. This place will nickel and dime you dime you to death (no pun intended). When my father passed his remains were brought here because I believe they have a relationship with the county/city. My father didn't want a big funeral, in fact he didn't want any services at all. He had requested cremation and a small family gathering. No viewing, no big to-do. When I inquired about cremation costs I was quoted around $3000. I knew this was too much and so I called around a bit and found another place that does it for under $1000 including copies of death certificates and everything. When I called the Callaghan and asked about the big price difference I was given a lot of excuses, such as "We're a full service mortuary" and when I mentioned the other facility and the price difference she lied and said those cheaper places will cremate people together and mix there ashes up (FYI - This is completely illegal in CA so no way they were doing it.) When I told her I was going to have the body moved someone from the mortuary called up my brother and tried to guilt trip him into keeping his body there, and pitting my sibling against me. Classy! There behavior was offensive and in my opinion tried to use guilt and grief over my father's death to make us pay their ridiculous price. Ultimately, they agreed to match the other mortuary but the experience with them left a very bad taste in my mouth. Death is a difficult time, but do your homework before you sign anything and make any agreements on your funeral plans. Paying the other mortuary a transfer fee, a storage fee to this place and cremation services would still have been less than HALF of what they were trying to charge for simple cremation. read more

My Mom is getting pretty old and so I called the office at Callahan. They put me in touch with a lady named Kate. Kate helped me and mysiblings to plan my Mom's funeral. I liked her because she wasn't pushy and she explained every detail to me and my siblings. She also didn't try to "sell" us anything special. We told her what our Mom wanted and she showed us our options. She suggested that we purchase a package because it was less expensive. When my mother passed away in Georgia, Deanna with Callaghan mortuary handled all the arrangements from picking her up at the airport, the service then transporting her to her final resting place. I was very impressed with everything and most importantly with her help in making the decisions I needed to make at such a stressful time of my life. Our experience at this place when my father passed away moved us to go to Graham-Hitch in Pleasanton when my mother passed, even though it is in another town and a lot farther away. Deanna at Callaghan was unbelievably inconsiderate and uncaring, making phone calls without telling me and not warning me that 4 squad cars, a fire engine, and a paramedics van were going to show up -- even though just the day before I had been at Callaghan making future cremation arrangements for my 96-year-old father, and they knew we had a Do Not Resusitate and POLST form. To protect my mother in the house, I had to confront all these people in the front yard, waving the forms. No one from Callaghan ever called to apologize or explain. Plus, the whole place smells moldy and the decor is from the 1980s. The price for my mother's cremation through Graham-Hitch was about 20% less than my dad's at Callaghan. read more

My mother passed away and she had pre-paid for her funeral at a mortuary in Hayward. We called the mortuary to pick up her body, after the coroner came and said my mom died of natural causes, and they would not be taking her for autopsy. The mortuary in Hayward said they did not work on Sundays and would not be able to pick up my moms body until Monday. I called Callaghan's and within 90 minutes, two men dressed in formal black suits arrived to pick up my moms body. They were polite, respectful and very gentle. They could not have been any more respectful or professional than they were. We had the memorial service a week later at Callahan's and everything was so nice. The funeral director Deanna made everything very easy for our family. Our experience is that Callaghan's handles one of the most difficult parts of life, that is death, with grace, dignity, respect and a whole lot of care and genuine compassion. read more

Some family who will not be able to attend the day of the scheduled funeral of my father, wanted to come to town prior to final service to see the body. (A wake had been contemplated but rejected because of cost.) To my surprise, at each and every possible suggested instance, I was told by DeAnna the person I talked to that a cost was involved. The final services are on a Tuesday. If I wanted to stop by, they are not "normally" open on Saturday so a $350 cost was involved. They are open on Friday, 8 -4:30 but because someone would have to wheel him into a room, a cost was involved. I have NEVER heard of a cost for people to go in and view the body that they hold in their establishment. (I could possible understand the Saturday thing.) I felt as if they were holding my father's body hostage unless they got additional monies from people who wanted a parting visit. I was told that even after getting him dress, there was no final inspection view because the consideration had not been paid for by the service arranger. I really am at a loss for words here. We just recently lost a very special family member. When we went, Deanna was very concerned about how much things cost. She would constantly say that she was trying to "steer us I the right direction." She also referred to our loved one as being in a refrigerator multiple times. She also mentioned that she could cut the clothes up the back so that we could have my loved one dressed in whatever I wanted. She also just handled many of the cosmetic things gruffly. As someone who is grieving a loss, I do not really care for the deals of how they are going to fill her mouth, or re-adjust her to make her look more life-like. Just tell me that she's going to be ready for the viewing. Maybe she's been doing it a while and she needs a refresher class on bereavement talk. The selection of cremains jars could also use a little help. Also, their tech needs an upgrade. They won't let you bring a laptop to show a presentation of photos. It has to be a dvd. I'm not that computer literate. As the only funeral home in Livermore, they shouldn't get cocky. We could always go to Pleasanton. read more
