A little curious as to what this restaurant is trying to be, but the saving grace is that the cheesecakes and service are pretty decent. What I mean by that is - well, you know how red flags are raised when a restaurant has way too many things on their menu? The reasoning there is that there's no way someone can be good at making THAT many dishes. Well, when I walked into Calories, I just wasn't really sure what it was trying to be. The storefront looks like a cute cafe, the cash and display case make it look like a bakery, the bar behind makes it look like a homey pub, and the tables in the back make it look like a nice fancy restaurant. So I was pretty confused about what kind of place this was. Nevertheless, we sat down and ordered a slice of the toffee cheesecake and a slice of the Saskatoon berry lemon yogurt cheesecake. I had been hearing rave reviews about the toffee all weekend, and although the texture is perfectly creamy and crust is beautifully crumby, was it worth the $10 for a single slice? Not sure. The berry cheesecake had a wonderful lemon flavor, but it tasted a little stale, like it had been in the case for a day or two. Our server was personable, friendly, and very professional. A nice place to come once when visiting town, but I'm not sure how often I would come if I was a local. read more

Because I'm a professional 20+ yr retired baker myself!! So, I want the best quality for my money. If I'm going to spend, give me the best, n it's found here. The desserts are made from scratch, and are fresh every time. Beware, lol, you'll be tempted to buy 1/2 or the entire dessert!! However, because it's made right, it will last in your fridge until it's gone. They use top ingredients, that's why. Taste the difference, here. The owners are great, and dedicated. Club Sandwich is great!!! I also love their holiday meal specials. In fact, last year, I gave gifts away, from this place. What a great way, to celebrate the holidays!! Came here to see their dessert selection and they have a beautiful, well-lit, well-labeled pastry case! I always find this can either make or break a sale. It was clean, organized and the cakes looked delectable! We ordered the Oreo cheesecake, hazelnut torte, shmoo torte and strawberry cheesecake. All were fantastic, although slightly overpriced $7/hazelnut, $11/cheesecake. We came back the next day and ordered the strawberry cheesecake again, however it must have been a day old as it was not nearly as delicious as the first day. Went for a romantic Friday night dinner. Empty upstairs except for 2 tables having dessets and tea... I reserved a cozy table. As soon as we got there they wanted to status at a 2 top right next to 2 girls .. why when there were bigger tables available. We are dining, Not having coffee. Server was pleasant just not super informative with her beer or wine. The food was fine. Best part was the small appetizer of scallop and pork belly. I will skip some other parts that weren't exceptional because I know times are tough to fund proper staff etc. The part that bugged us the most was the sound, how you could hear everyone's conversations, just wasn't quite what we had hoped for. They should have the dining area for dining only ! And out of New York style vanilla cheesecake . :( Just our opinion . We will skip dinner again but will go back for coffee and desserts read more

I first heard about Calories from my mom, who used to eat here while attending university. I was a bit worried about going here at 12:30 for lunch, but it didn't start filling up until closer to one. The staff and super attentive and they have a nice lunch menu. Just make sure to note the address, as the exterior is currently being refurbished to when it was first built. I went with the chickpea and rapini bowl, which tasted great! The chickpeas were nice and spicy. The meal also came with a choice of side. I went with the zucchini and corn soup. I found it sweet, but still tasty. The portion was large and for $15, it was a steal. My grandpa had their quiche of the day. He said it was super warm, so make sure to wait for it to cool down first. He also ordered a side of the vegetable and pork soup for $3. We were sitting right next to the dessert case, which looked absolutely delicious. A few people came and picked up cake slices to-go. I will definitely be back to try one, but I was super full after the meal. read more

I think about calories often. I loved their food. We had a wedding to attend in saskatoon and it somehow fell on my bday! We are from charleston and didn't know where to go and found calories. The food was so fresh and delicious! You cross the border and the ingredients are sooo much better! I really wish I could make their harissa dish (it's a bunch of veggies chickpeas in seasonings and butter) While I may never go back to saskatoon, I do hope I get the recipe for that dish! On a recent trip to Saskatoon my in-laws treated me to a dinner at this straight forwardly named bistro. First impressions are that the young waiter who served will need some practice at making recommendations and getting his ordering down BUT the food and drink that came was creative and delicious. Calories specializes in locally sourced and seasonal ingredients. It being winter the dinner menu was short but intriguing. I went for a duck special which included Indian spiced eggplant and chickpeas. Tasty! Other items at the table included roasted root veggies with a lentil ragout and melted Raclette, steak and frites with red wine gravy, and roasted pepper stuffed chicken breast. All delicious. I've been ordering my new favorite cocktail, a French 75 and the one I had here has been the best yet. It is usually comprised of lemon, gin or vodka and bubbly. Calories adds house-made bitters and this elevates their '75 to a whole new level. read more

A funky space on Broadway. Everyone was super friendly. The wine and beer list were extensive. We had the $20 three course meal, and while the portions were on the small side, the flavors and presentation made up for it. Had some hanger steak on a mushroom herb polenta. The polenta was amazing. Dessert with a blueberry cake thingy with whipped cream, yum. Went back again last night and had a flourless chocolate almond cherry cake, again great. This is one of my favourite restaurants in the city. Perfect for date night, dessert with friends or family brunch. I have never had an issue getting a table for two without a reservation however for special occasions it is best to do so (which you can complete online!). The menu is local with a French cuisine twist. I specifically enjoy that there are wine pairings suggested for every appetizer and entrée and highly recommend you try them. The service is professional and well-educated on the menu, wines and more, and they are always willing to accommodate to your needs. Lastly when you fall in love with their desserts, you can order 1/2 or a full cake by just calling in and placing an order for pick up, which is the perfect gift for all special occasions! Hands down my favorite restaurant in Saskatoon. Farm to table, local ingredients, amazing menu... and the changing weekend features always tantalize the tongue. The staff are friendly and warm and quick to offer recommendations. Even showing up just before closing they are kind and don't make you feel rushed. Friendly staff and the mains are well balanced. I had the frites which was delicious, and my mom had the sweet pancakes which were fantastic. Good level of service. Only downside is we went in at 11AM and they sat us at the very back so it was a little dark and loud near the kitchen. read more

This is my go-to place for dessert every time I visit Saskatoon. Their cheesecakes are incredibly delicious, as are their power cookies (kind of like a trail mix cookie) and gluten-free cookies (so my husband says). I've tried their tea lattes and they are also equally delicious and go well with their desserts. They also serve dinner here, but I've never tried it - their desserts always get me and I know I can rely on them to nip my sugar fix. I think I judged Calories too quickly based on a single experience. I've been back since on a friend's suggestion, and have had some delicious vegetarian dishes and desserts. I will never buy dessert from this place again. The picture I attached is of the $10 piece of cheesecake that my wife brought home. She asked for a piece of cheesecake to go, they took payment, and handed her a take out box. When she got home we were shocked at how little you get for such a high price. And it wasn't very good... tasted like old coffee grounds and cream cheese. I called to speak with the manager and she simply told me they cut slices based on what the owner tells them to do and seemed annoyed at my call and was trying to cut the call off. Very accommodating with our large group of ten. The steaks were not fantastic and I wouldn't recommend ordering them. The special, a pork chop, was amazing. The apps were all wonderful and well worth the price. The pasta dish was a flavourless and the kids meal was lacking ... a cold cut dish with chopped up veggies. Dinner was good, however not great. The steak was cooked to order (medium) however it was not as tender as I was expecting. There were 3 tiny spears of asparagus and some potato wedges covered in a good bacon type sauce. I felt it was a little overpriced for what you got. The pancetta salad was absolutely drenched in balsamic vinegar and served with a side of olives that were not conducive to the dish. Worst breakfast I have ever had. Do NOT order the French toast. It tasted like it was soaked in egg and put on a plate. Not cooked at all. We told the server it was undercooked and she proceeded to tell us that is how it is suppose to be.
