Cal's has the best cookies around and they are the size of your head. Their desserts are delicious and I love the butterscotch dessert! I could live off their banana bread. All the staff is incredibly friendly and funny as all get out. My husband eats the Cajun peanuts like they're going out of style. Their pasties really surprised me and are delicious. Not too greasy, well filled. If you want them hot, you gotta get there early because they go quick. But they offer them frozen which is so nice and we recently tried the pasty pie which was delicious!! read more

Cal's is great. They've got a damn good selection of staple foods (including some really good steaks and chicken), beer, liquor, etc. When you don't feel like driving to Econo, Cal's will get you through. It's a *little* pricey, but that's just compared to the big grocery stores (and I expect that, to be honest) People say the Pasties are the best here (I don't know, not the biggest pasty fan here). read more

This is a great convenience store and they make their own desserts and food. This review is on their pasty. Cal's pasty used to be #2 on my list when I used to be really into them about 10 years ago. I recently bought some of Cal's frozen pasties for my friends and me for a trip to Isle Royale. I hyped up how good they were and when we had them, I was sadly disappointed with the pasties. Cal's pasties were huge--had to be about a pound a piece. The crust was good, but the filling was mostly shredded potato. There was hardly any meat or the traditional rutabaga. My friend commented that is was liking eating a baked potato. To me it was like eating a huge pie with soft hash browns. I did not realize how important it is to have the right ratio of meat and rutabagas in a pasty until I had this one. I am hoping it was fluke and it was just this batch as I really like the store and can definitely say the pasties they used to sell were great. The pasty portion was amazing and the crust was really good. Feedback to Cal's--The filling needs to have more meat, carrots, and rutabagas and less potatoes. Their desserts are great though. They make mega cookies that are really good. Their peanut butter-chocolate cream pie and oreo cookie pie desserts are excellent! read more

In my opinion, and everyone has one, but Cal's has the best Pasty's in Marquette, maybe the U.P. I grew up on Genesee St. since I was teenie weenie and Cal's was a staple in our day to day lives from day 1. I played hockey with the family and still hang out with them on my holiday travels back to the Yoop. Its been in the family for over 35 years (as far as I can remember) and still going strong. Really friendly staff, great prepared foods, good selection of essentials, and they carry the Jilbert Dairy brand (another staple in Marquette). I've been to hundreds of small stores and nothing beats this place. Cal's Party Store had, HAD, only one downfall though while I was growing up, it was cash only. That especially hurt when I would come back from college every weekend (MTU) and wanted to charge beer / booze. I was forced to go to Econo.....but that's all changed now, they take credit cards. Cal's also carries frozen pasties so you can bring them back with you. I stick at least 4 in my suitcase each time I come up. I remember they also used to have a delicious oreo cookie desert. This place is convenient. That's just it. There is nothing too special about it other than it's prime location in relation to that part of the neighborhood. A lot of the stuff sold here is way over priced, but if you're only in the market for one or two items, you would spend the money in gas driving anywhere else so you might as well just suck it up as an acceptable loss. They do have a good variety of groceries here considering the size of the building though. They do have a $5 minimum for credit cards otherwise they'll charge you an additional 25 cents, which isn't too outrageous. Overall, you pay for convenience when you shop here. If you need a quick couple things, great. But I wouldn't do a whole big shopping spree, unless of course, you just won the lottery, or, don't have a car to go anywhere cheaper. read more

After leaving the Marquette area some 25 years ago...it was awesome to see Cals still there and still making the best Pasties...had to have at least one each day I was there...I was there for 10 days...and I brought 12 back with me. There selection of food and spirits...they are some of the best...quality is second to none...I would rather pay for someting great, then get a deal on something of poor quality...Cals...you folks are still the best...now if you would just have a plan to ship your pasties, I would be in heaven!!! read more
