I am a home healthcare aid in Rockland County & I'm currently caring for a Hospice client whose family uses Bronx Calvary. Every single time an aid from our agency calls Hospice for one of our clients that we share the nurses complain about the drive to Rockland & in general are very unpleasant to deal with. On Saturday 4/11 during my overnight shift with my Hospice client she told me she was having trouble breathing so I called Hospice and the on-call nurse I spoke to wanted me to administer medication which I am not legally allowed to do, she proceeded to tell me that it's not helpful that I'm there and can't administer medication and that's not how a Hospice program is Run and that they're supposed to be someone there to dispense medication. Which was shocking to me because that is her job as a nurse and not mine as an aid or even family which she asked for, my client's family is out of state, When I said that to her she responded with don't get nasty with me and hung up on me. The second nurse I spoke to shortly after that complained that it would take an over hour for her to drive from the Bronx to my location which is not accurate & asked how my client was doing and said she would follow up later. I was with my client until 9 AM and nobody came to check on her. The first time I had to call Hospice for the same client bc she was complaining of pain when the nurse arrived she asked me why I did not give the client medication claiming that I am private healthcare which I am not SHE IS and that she should not have had to drive all the way there..... Speaking with my clients family I was made aware that Calvary charges $50 an hour! And every single nurse complains about doing the job that they chose. Imagine if there was an actual emergency..... 911 is not an option for most Hospice clients as Hospice is end of life care. It absolutely breaks my heart that we are all supposed to be working together to make my clients transition as peaceful as possible and the Hospice nurses are fighting us every step of the way which is WILD! If travel is a problem perhaps end your contracts with Rockland County and only keep your patients in NYC bc this is absolutely unacceptable the sick and elderly deserve better quality end of life care & I will never stop advocating read more

A relative died here. She spent the last days of her life in a bleak, soulless hospital room in intense pain, while the staff did absolutely nothing to adequately address it. Even with numerous complaints, they made it clear they didn't care. There was no compassion. No basic mercy or kindness. Just staff ignoring the needs of a dying patient visibly in pain. My relative's last words were "help me. I'm in agony." Please don't send anyone you love here. read more

I just had a sister-in-law that passed in Calvary. It was nice that she was able to live out her last days in comfort. The type of care she was recieved was good. The Hospice given to her was extraordinary. What made it crazy was that my mother died in there 20 years ago. It was strange to go back inside them doors again. Anybody that has their last wish to be comfortable Calvary is the place to go. read more

When my mom passed away in their care,not one doctor called me and told me they were sorry it was almost like next let's move somebody else in her room. They are a disgrace.!! The nurses are the heart of this organization but management fails to assist them. I knew an amazing nurse who was very thorough and detailed with their job and since she missed a few days for being sick. She was let go over it, she truly made an impact here. Big mistake from management and the directors. read more

They keep you in the dark about your loved one as well as family, doctors, close friends (incl the ones w/ POA and Health Proxy). It is impossible to speak to your loved one or get an update on their status from anyone at any point. This comes from multiple people. They treat every patient as if they are supposed to die within days and do nothing to help them. If this is not the case,theyrefuse toget them out of bed . My loved one was kept in bed even though she could walk fine with a cane prior to getting there. Yet "she would not die fast enough as the bed she was in should have turned around at least 5 times during her 3 month stay" , as we were told. Neither the Administrator or Medical Director speak to family as they are too busy playing golf or something else.. According to staff, they work 5-6 hrs/ day and their staff shields from calls, including those from the FBI. I AM TALKING TO 60 MNS ALONG WITH OTHERS AND ADVOCATING FOR THIS PLACE TO BE CLOSED, AS THEY ONLY MAKE $$$ IF YOUR LOVED ONE DIES QUICKLY! read more

I am writing to share my deep disappointment and concern regarding the care my father received at Calvary Hospital. We chose Calvary on the recommendation of White Plains Hospital and with the understanding that he would be kept comfortable and receive the full palliative care plan that was promised. Unfortunately, our experience was very different. My father did not have a comfortable end of life. His medication for peripheral vascular disease was removed, and he ultimately passed away not from obstructive pulmonary disease, but from a blood clot in his leg. In the hours leading up to his death, he was clearly in pain--he repeatedly said his leg hurt, his leg was cold, and he appeared extremely uncomfortable. I was told that he was "reflecting" his morphine through the oral route and that this was the reason for his ongoing pain. Despite his suffering, it took far too long for staff to provide an IV to administer medication effectively. I had to beg the nurse to help keep him comfortable and asked if there was another way to give him morphine. Watching him in pain for so long was incredibly traumatic for me and my family. We were assured that at Calvary, our loved one would be made comfortable, that dignity and relief from suffering were priorities. Sadly, those promises were not met. The lack of timely pain management and the delay in addressing his needs caused my father to endure unnecessary pain in his final hours. I am sharing this because I hope no other family has to go through what we did. End-of-life care should focus on compassion, dignity, and comfort. Our experience did not reflect that standard, and it has left us with deep sadness and regret. read more

My grandmother spent her final days of life here-- she was transferred here from NY Presbyterian. The staff here works to make their final days or weeks as comfortable as possible. I thought the staff was helpful and was always willing to speak and explain everything to my mother and my aunt about the process. I did not have too much contact with the nurses other than one final meeting, but they seemed to run a decent operation here. I removed a star because my aunt's husband claimed the security guards on the lower level were extremely rude when we made our way upstairs. I had a pleasant and simple experience with them though. read more

This is a review of their in-home hospice: My grandfather was on in-home hospice care with Calvary for the last few weeks of his life. I was in the home with him daily and overnight, and one night he appeared to have stopped breathing - I checked for breath, chest movement, a pulse, eye movement, etc repeatedly for several minutes and there was nothing, so I called Calvary (the number they gave us to call when a patient stops breathing) to report this. They asked me what time I'd noticed he stopped breathing, I said "1:10am". They said "sorry for your loss" and that was that. Several hours later, the funeral home came and picked him up. I wasn't the family member in charge of the hospice care arrangements so I wasn't sure how things were supposed to go, but I was later told by the family member managing his hospice care that someone from Calvary was supposed to come and examine him and certify death. No one ever did that, just me, and while I have some medical training as a veterinary nurse, I am far from qualified to pronounce a human as dead. I called Calvary the next day to ask why no one had ever come and they said "Someone did come - nurse [name] came and wrote down time of death as 1:10am". I said "I was literally there by his side 24/7 until they took his body away, no one ever came. They only wrote down 1:10 because that's what I told them over the phone when they asked." She responded by saying "Ok. Is there anything else I can help you with?" and that was that. I cannot begin to express how disgusted I am first by their negligence but secondly by their complete and utter lack of care and accountability. This is something I will have to live with for the rest of my life because of them. Spare yourself the agony and please avoid giving them your business. read more

This is an update my previous review.The doctor just called me to let me know my father was found on the floor in the bathroom early this morning, how can this happen when their is alarms on the bed? This is unacceptable once again how does he make it out of the bed and into the bathroom with no response from staff.Who know how long he was on the floor because As I stated in my first post at 900pm the other evening not one nurse was present at-the desk when we were leaving the facility.This needs Immediate attention from whoever runs this place because at this time I'am very upset this is not compassion or quality care that Calvary portrays. read more

No worse place exists for my mother to have spent her last days. The care was shoddy and dismissive. Conflicting advice was given numerous times by doctors. Most nurses rolled their eyes at every question or request my family members and I made, and some mumbled comments to suggest they did not appreciate the presence of family. At a hospice hospital. She was never comfortable. It became clear quickly that once you don't automatically agree to have morphine administered, then the interest in finding other options disappears. It seems that "care" and "comfort" = heavy doses of morphine. Dignity is dismissed as many go uncleaned for long stretches and when you request that one be regularly cleaned/changed/bathed, again, there are eye rolls. read more

My aunt entered home hospice care towards the end of January 2025, after we refused to allow her to return to the rehab facility where she was previously. Her wish was to spend the last of her days at home. The doctors and nurses at the hospital where my aunt was being discharged assured us that the compassionate choice to bring her home and care for her there was best so she could spend the rest of her days in a familiar, caring environment, surrounded by and being cared for by her loved ones. They made arrangements for Calvary to provide the home hospice care. The level of care, compassion, guidance, and direction exhibited by these professionals was unmatched. We marveled at the speed at which all the equipment necessary for her care arrived. We were visited by social workers and nurses who announced their arrival beforehand, offered guidance and advice and sincerely listened to all our cares and concerns. Delivery personnel set up and removed the necessary equipment after the companies called to let us know they were on their way. Any medical supplies that were ordered by the nurses or those required or needed by us showed up at our door promptly. Meds were delivered by a pharmaceutical company whose drivers kept in touch with us by text messages and delivered at any time of day/night. My aunt passed away during the first week of March peacefully at home, her desire being fulfilled. We are so grateful to the hospice service at Calvary, and the personnel--a caring and compassionate team--who came right alongside and partnered with us in order for our family to keep our aunt at home and have her cared for in a dignified and loving way. read more

I reached out to Calvary Home Care last week as recommended by my 101-year-old mother's physician. My mother is being cared for at home with 24-hour aides and family. I called Calvary on Friday of last week and was told that hospice care could begin this coming week. This afternoon I received a phone call from Calvary today telling me that because of inadequate staffing levels, they can offer no support to my family. What about the TV and bus ads saying that Calvary was a lifesaver for families for end-of-life care? Not today, not now. read more

I wouldn't send my worst enemy here. Horrific experience out of a FX scary show but it was real life.

I was relieved when my mother was admitted to Calvary in mid December. My sister and I were exhausted from taking care of my bedridden mom for two years. Her cancer progressed and we were challenged at taking care of her bedsore and her pain management. The staff of the 6th floor were wonderful; Dr Jessica, Peter, Denise, social worker Dawn, the dietitian as well as a few others. Visiting hours are from 1pm to 7pm so we became acquainted with the staff from daily visits. Mom spoke very little English and had a hard time feeding herself as the days went on so it was imperative that some relative/loved one would be around to assist and look after her. Unfortunately, there are many hospitals across the country that are facing nurse shortages. Mom's room was private. A reclining lounge chair as well as two other smaller chairs. Due to Covid, only 2 guests are allowed at a time. As of January 2022, visitors need proof of vaccination or a rapid/pcr test to enter. After getting checked in by security, a new face mask is given to each visitor. There's a small cafe in the back of the lobby. Parking is a very reasonable $5. read more

This hospital lets their night nurses fall asleep at the desk and the night nurse came to work coughing sick people the night shift nurses don't attend to the patients like they should unless the family is watching and the night shift doctor called me and delivered my mother is dead in a nasty matter I never gotten a apology from this doctor when I reported him or some kind of reprimand or compensation for the hurt and pain that was caused by the nasty delivery that my mother died read more

My nephew was brought there because he was homeless he went to hospital frist and found he had lung cancer and than went to his brain... had no where to go so z they took him to Calvary and gave him a bed and to took care of him till he passed away about a week ago could not asked for better care and staff very clean ... read more

I deeply regret the fact that my mother spent her last days here. The reason we took her to Calvary was because there was a key procedure she needed to have done periodically, and we had been assured repeatedly (by Employees/reps of Calvary) that since it was a HOSPITAL yes, they could do this. It was for this reason, and pretty much this reason alone, that we decided to take her there and did not have her undergo a procedure for a permanent catheter prior to taking her there. When the time came for her to have the procedure done, it turned out that we were told NO it can't be done there, she'd have to be taken elsewhere by ambulance. Then, another doctor contradicted this, but by that point... it was too late, it was the day my mother passed away. Nurses were at times pretty rude to us; one nurse, who had just come on duty and had no idea what the doctor assigned to my mother had actually strongly advised that day, blamed the family for a decision we made (following the doctor's advice); different doctors gave opposing views. There are some caring staff members, but overall we felt we were treated in a dismissive manner too often, and I am deeply disappointed in misinformation which led to serious decisions about my mom's healthcare, things that really mattered, in the final weeks of her life. This was a topic we asked about, very clearly, at least 3 times. read more

My mom was transferred to cavalry for inpatient hospice. The staff took fantastic care of her, and made the last three weeks of her life comfortable and pain-free. They were in constant communication with us, and all of our interactions with doctors, nurse practitioners, nurses and caretakers were beyond positive. Please do not send your loved one to this disgraceful facility. What a horrific experience my family went through. Our Aunt received ZERO compassion while she was at this facility with a painful terminal illness. The nurses and aides were not kind or caring in any way whatsoever and let her suffer and did not tend to her. We were forced to hire private care for night time and early morning because of the lack of care she received and then it became a struggle to get her transferred out. This is supposed to be a Catholic and compassionate hospice for peace and comfort. Our beloved Aunt was provided neither. Shame on the nurses and aides and staff. They showed no empathy. I want to thank the entire staff of nurses, medical assistants, doctors, security, and lovely volunteers at Calvary for their compassionate work and professionalism during the most difficult time, the last days of one's life. Patients are treated with respect, given the utmost in comfort and medical care. Family and friends visiting are treated with tender genuine compassion as well. The facility is kept clean and well run, tightly organized 24 hours of each day and night. All questions and needs were addressed immediately and respectfully. Every staff member we met the past two weeks, was truly wonderful, thoughtful and sensitive to our needs during the last days of my mother-in-law's life. Her wishes were honored and met with utmost compassion. We know of Calvary through those we know who have familiarity with the facility as their choice for hospice and palliative care. Some of the nurses at this facility has no human decency I had a friend that passed away here.. minutes after her passing this nurse named Avril and her colleague was outside her door making bad comments about how my friend looked and went on to saying it's because she's dead. If it was their loved one I know for a fact they wouldn't like that if that had happened to them. read more

Just a kind, attentive, and supportive hospital. Gives the patients dignity and amazing care, which relieves some anxiety about care.

My mom was taken to Calvary in 11/2021 with dementia and ovarian cancer. She was treated very well and the staff were lovely. The decision to enter this kind of hospital/hospice is tough but necessary when living with a home hospice arrangement is no longer a safe option. We were referred to Calvary by a number of friends who also had good experiences for their loved ones there. read more

I am a certified hospice and palliative nurse who was greatly disappointed in the care at Calvary hospital. The staff should work at Panera bread, not an end of life hospital. Calvary is the best hospice organization by far. They are so compassionate as well as professional.

The final resting place for the sick and tired however there's problems. In particular the consistent, daily injection of morphine to the point of complete oblivion. I asked for it to stop and they did not. This is a business and a high turnover brings larger profit. Morphine fits right into that scenario. Never again... Plus side; the staff was friendly and mannerable. read more

Just put my mom there to make her comfortable for her last few days here on earth. Place is lovely..front desk girl was ok. Security guard by elevator has made me feel like i was trespassing few times. I went to get coffee and walked around the grounds to clear my mind and I was stopped at front desk asking me where I was going. He must have looked at my red tag on my shirt several times. It was weird and me and my family don't like to be grilled..gentleman was of Spanish decent with glasses. Please if I have been verified why am I being treated like this. Other than that place is great. Priest came in yesterday to anoint my mom. Very comforting to know my mom is being taken care of. read more

I am absolutely so appalled and angry at the unbelievable treatment at Calvary Hospital!! My grandmother was here for about 4-5 months not because she was dying, but due to a really bad wound that needed healing and treatment. Some nurses are nice and caring, their not to blame, but the other night time nurses on Wing 5 North absolutely don't give a crap about their patients, and let them sit there for hours without any care or attention. All they do is sign the whiteboard in the room for the day and they disappear, and not to be seen again! Also some of the nurses seem bothered and annoyed when my grandmother asks for help for fixing her, needing water, etc... We have spoken to the higher ups many times, and they just shrug it off, and the problems still continue and her wounds worsened... Unfortunately though, due to her condition, even her mental state was starting to worsen very recently... my grandmother was ok this morning and breathing when we went to visit her, however there were pillows scattered about the room, and the room being dirty.. unbelievable... But tonight was so unreal... I didn't even know how to feel at the moment, in complete SHOCK... We went there at 7:20pm today to find my grandmother out cold, not breathing and unfortunately had passed away, and here's the crazy part: THE NURSES HAD NO CLUE SHE DIED AND WERE LITERALLY POINTING FINGERS AT EACH OTHER, SAYING "I DIDNT KNOW SHE PASSED," "OH WHO WAS IN HER ROOM LAST"???!!! Are you kidding me???There were literally 10-15 nurses standing around the desk like fools chit chatting to one another or on their phones, but they didn't even have the decency or at least have TWO SECONDS to just pop in her room to check up on her once in a while, not saying to check on her every single second of the day, but for Christ's sake man... at least see if she's breathing!! How would we have known that she passed??? And for how long since she passed??? We had to find out the hard way by going there ourselves!!! This is very very unacceptable, and very disheartening to find your loved one like this because we have trusted you guys to take really good care of her, we thought this place would be good for her wound healing, and you guys let us down, BIG TIME!!! Trust me, you guys are so lucky your place is staying open with the care you provide your patients, it's DESPICABLE!!! I thank God she is resting now in a good place without any pain or suffering Please I beg anyone, choose somewhere else, this is not the right place at all! FYI: I have read thru the other Google reviews and a lot of people have said the same thing, that the staff is very clueless about the condition of your loved one, and if they are even breathing... wow so sad... I number of us flew in to visit our grandmother at Calvary and we were treated incredibly poorly by the Hospital Staff and Security. Per their recommendation we all stayed at the Residence Inn next door. When we attempted to go over to the hospital through the a joining gate (where we saw tons of staff passing through) we were told that our elderly family members needed to walk all the way around (nearly a 1/2 mile detour) in 8 degree weather. Instead we opted to get a couple of Uber cars (at not inconsiderable cost) to arrive and find that the gate in question leads not to some secure area, but the public parking lot. It boggles the mind to understand why the staff at the hospital feels it necessary to treat the family members of their patients so poorly for what appears to be no logical reason. read more

My family and I were extremely disappointed with the lack of care given to my father while at your institution and I MEAN institution not a hospital for the end of life care. The nurses were indifferent and not responsive to patients or family requests at this most difficult time. Many of the nurses gathered around the nurses station and chatted rather than attending to patients needs. We needed to make several requests for my dads health status (vitals) as well as personal hygiene. In fact a Dr. was snippy and did not satisfactorily explain what was happening to my father. As a matter of fact anytime I asked to speak with her it was more of an inconvenience for her to come see us. She was matter of fact and highly upsetting to me and my family. The only positive statement about Calvary is that the Chaplins were responsive , compassionate and caring. read more

My mother was started Calvary Hospice care at home on 4-29. The social worker and intake nurse stated that there is 24 hours/7 days a week assistance and claimed as stated in there packet "...Calvary Care;s values are care, comfort, compassion, dignity and non-abandonment" which have all been proven as a falsehood and they deceived us. On 5-5 mom stop responding and started screaming out in pain. I called Calvary numerous amounts of times with no avail. I reached out to supervisors and asked for emails of their main office. I was told to write to jmenkes@calvaryhospital.org, mpelkowski@calvaryhospital.org and dfeldman@calvaryhospital.org for help. No one came to my assistance. 21 hours later with many phone calls and mom crying out in pain, liquid medication came to ease the pain. 19 hours later my mom passed. Calvary need to say still couldn't do things correct. They pronounced her deceased at 6:37 pm on 5-7. On the evening @ 8:20 pm of 5-7, they continued to ring my bell with the medicine she needed during those 21 hours of pain, 5-8-2024 they still tried to drop off medicine at 5:00 pm. An agency called to say an aid was coming meanwhile my mom was deceased. It is 5-9 and Calvary's supervising team has never explained or tried to make things right. Please don't put your love ones through this. Go with Northwell Hospice or another company. Calvary is out for the money. read more

My uncle had to be admitted to Calvary Hospital in the Bronx for hospice care. I am glad that a hospital like this is available to him for his final days. Visiting hour is 24-hours a day. The staff is helpful and caring. The facilities is well maintain and the rooms are comfortable, private and tastfully decorated. Calvary Hospital is also in Brooklyn. They were helpful during my grandfather's last days. read more

I've worked in medicine. This place is a disgrace. Do NOT send your loved ones here. Total lack of compassion. We were promised good care, yet they allowed our loved one to writhe in pain for days. She had a tumor pressing against her back that caused her constant discomfort. When we asked one of the nurses for help, her response was "she can do it herself." We had to hire outside care because they were so unresponsive. I had to move and adjust my loved one and take her to the commode myself. They were never that busy, yet I never saw them turning patients the entire time I was there. Patients need to be turned every 2 hours by law to prevent bed sores. Once the patients get hospital acquired injuries the hospital becomes responsible for the whole stay. I get there's a nursing shortage, but again, it wasn't even busy. I saw staff sitting around more than anything else. We asked for help getting her transferred to another hospice and they said she they couldn't do it because it was a Sunday and they didn't have the staff. All we needed was her medical information faxed to the other facility and they refused. How do they not have a contingency for that considering how serious these situations are? When we first asked for their help, the social worker said they couldn't get her into the other hospice. Then when I called them myself we had no issue. I don't believe they ever even really tried. Shame on you all. When she was transferred to the other facility, the other nurses said how horrendous it was for Calvary to ignore our loved one screaming in pain. REMEMBER, DO NO HARM! If you love someone and you have any other option, DO NOT SEND THEM HERE. read more
