Let me start by saying that I hate the dentist -- I always have, ever since I was a little girl. I switched to Calvert Smiles a few years ago when my husband said that it was a great experience and I thought, sure, let me to go a different place to be tortured. But -- and I can't believe I'm saying this -- I actually love going to the dentist now! From the second I walk in the door, to the second I leave, it is such an enjoyable experience. The waiting room is homey and cozy. The staff who greet you are welcoming and personable. Every dental hygienist is so nice, so comforting, and does an incredible job (though, I have to say that my husband and I especially love Luda!). The dentist is quick yet thorough. I am literally in and out in 30 minutes or less - and I have never had to wait more than 5 minutes upon arrival. I've had one cavity filled (whoops) and it was so quick that I was like, are you sure that's it? The dentist laughed and said, yep! I feel like I've been duped all these years, thinking the dentist was awful. In reality, I've just been going to the wrong place. Thank you for changing my mind about the dentist!! read more

This practice is AWFUL. They did not let us know that one of the dentists was not going to be there for the day of my daughter's appointment and therefore they did X-rays (which she did NOT need) and told her to reschedule to see the dentist on another day. If we had cancelled, we would have been charged a cancellation fee, but instead we were charged $280 out of pocket for x-rays and no examination by the dentist. We were loyal patrons for Calvert Smiles for more 10 years. read more

This dentist office does unnecessary work! My wife and I both received dental work that our new dentist feels was unnecessary. I have never had issues with my teeth until getting a procedure at this dentist. A procedure was done to fix a gap where food gets stuck. Well it only made it worse and to make matters even worse I have pain in my tooth now that. Not a tooth that was part of the gap, a neighboring tooth! It has been over a year of pain when flossing that is finally starting to get better, only because of a correction that my new dentist made. Tried to give this place a chance multiple times. Horrid wait times even when you make appointments, and the last time I visited the office and had to wait, the desk clerk was rude when I asked how much longer I had to wait as I did have to get back to work. She told me, "do you really think the doctor could get everything done in twenty minutes?" in a very snobbish manner. When I questioned the desk clerks about bills and insurance, I'm told I was mistaken when i said the doctor told me insurance would cover it. I'm not an idiot, and I know what I'm told. I feel like this place has become just about the money. Last time I saw the actual doctor, they wanted to set me up with a mouth full of crowns. My new dentist has assured me that it's not needed, just a few small fillings needed. Bring back some of your previous front desk employees who knew what they were doing and could actual perform customer service. read more

Do not ever go here. I wouldn't go here for a dire emergency. The doctor is awful and you will always have a cavity. The work is less than crappy and you will always have to have it replaced. This has happened to all of my 'cavities' that she has replaced and my husband's front teeth that look like a 2 year old put play dough On! So disappointed in the work. The staff is somewhat nice but not accommodating. We had an emergency and they said it would be 2 weeks. And let's talk about them stealing money. You have to pay for your work before it's done even if they are just guessing on how much your insurance will pay. So we paid about two thousand dollars just to find out the insurance paid for more than what they estimated. They won't give us a refund and said we have a credit. I matched the EOB with their statement and they ripped us off over 300 dollars. DO NOT GO HERE! read more

Been to this place twice, I like it better than my previous dental office. The staff is friendly and i did not have to wait long before they took me back for my cleaning. Mrs. Luda is incredibly gentle and thorough with cleaning my teeth. She recommended I get a night guard and it helped me tremendously. This is my new go to place! read more

If you choose to go to Calvert Smiles for dental care, please be aware, get second opinions from other offices before agreeing to major work, be wary of the quality of work being done, advocate for yourself, don't make any rash decisions. Both my husband and I were convinced to have major work done on our teeth that had major impacts to our dental health that we feel could have been avoided had we gone elsewhere. In short, they knowingly put a crown on a half-finished root canal (causing the tooth to get infected and need an extraction just over a year later) in my husband's mouth and insisted at my very first appointment despite my communicated doubts/concerns that I had 10 cavities that needed to be filled asap, and I have been shown some time later now (by a different dentist) that the fillings were done very poorly. We do appreciate the holistic approach and non-toxic products used here, and had hoped to continue to come here for cleanings and check-ups. However, after our experience and how we were treated by some of the office staff, we will not be returning. read more

This is a great office. Well run, and the staff is very well trained. This is my second time for a cleaning, and the hygienist and staff were the best. I went to this dentist after they exchange hands they tried to charge me eighteen hundred dollars for money there employee was stealing we where paying cash he was writing up bogus bills also went back there after a huge abscess before I had my tooth pulled stopped antibiotics one week before going there informed them I just got off antibiotics dentist starts scrapping around in a tooth I haven't had problem with now major infection developed they refused to call me in a antibiotic because they wanted to get a office visit fee I called my doctor pulled in the driveway to his office he gave me antibiotics and told me never to go there again I've found a new dentist that's giving me a forty percent discount since I have no dental insurance!!! read more

This dentist is all about money. If you question the number of cavities she says you have, the number will dramatically decrease. Also, they are not empathetic to those of us with dentist anxiety. The associate dentist had to leave the room to take a breather she was so impatient with my anxiety. Then I got a bill from collections with an extra $50 added on as a "collections fee". read more

I am disappointed with the current service of this business. My family has been conveniently using Calvert Smiles since moving to Dunkirk, MD in 2015. Today my mother arrived home after being away for six months serving our country, and was confronted with a bill for Invisalign from almost over two years prior. Lack of filing with the insurance company on time created an outstanding bill that the front office requested payment from my mother or myself. Due to age restraints on dentistry this raises a large concern considering we had paid everything we were told. To be confronted after a long departure with an outstanding bill - especially when we have complied with all other payments on time. I have received word that switching dentist offices is the best move for my family and we will no longer return to Calvert Smiles. The ecofriendly nature was accommodating but not enough so that it has guaranteed our return. read more

Stressful - waited 40 minutes past the scheduled appointment time. Phone was ringing and ringing. An angry confrontation took place between the desk and a patient who was informed of a large bill following procedures that were actually uncovered, after being told they would be covered. The hygienist stalled for time before a different dentist than expected did the exam. Like others, left the place with a bad feeling of strategies to increase bills, especially since front desk declared negative comments about dealing with our insurance provider prior to and following the visit. I was disappointed this morning when I received yet another letter from Calvert Smiles Dentistry 10415 Southern Maryland Blvd, Dunkirk, MD providing a "Final Notice" on services they did not provide! (extortion) Of course, if not paid they threaten collection action which folks need to understand this can adversely affect someone's credit. (go figure) I visited the clinic back in the winter during a heavy snow with expectations of mending my lower denture (they built) which had broken in half. Calvert Smiles constructed the denture approximately 1-2 years previously which never fit right and ultimately broke . A word of advice to current and future patients, be aware of where you seek medical and dental care! I would not recommend these folks to ANYONE ever! I hope all taking advantage of your patients gets you into heaven. read more

I'm sad to be downgrading this office. My opinion about the quality of care is unchanged, but the administration side of it has gone way downhill. Getting a human on the phone used to be easy; now there are days I just give up because I just get the answering machine, and they've never returned my calls. When I do get to speak to a person, the attitude is brusque, bordering on rude, and on more than one occasion I've been told something has been taken care of (i.e. made an appointment) and then found out later that it was never done. They've installed a new computer system, which seems to have issues with billing; unfortunately the lack of human availability compounds this problem and I've been trying for months to get a clear answer on some bills they're sending me that seem to have no correlation to what my insurance says - somehow the answers I get don't make it into the computer system and they keep charging me for the original incorrect amount as well as financing charges. I just can't justify the time and aggravation any more. Dunkirk has no shortage of dentists; I'm sure one of them will want my business more. read more

Long wait times (I've waited 30-60mins past my actual apt time) Poor communication from staff to patient & the receptionist, though nice...could not follow up OR return important phone calls. Bad bad bad .. I went there just to snip a wire that was poking from my braces long story short I wasnt told the price even though I asked the assistant . I was astonished that she charged me 75$ had I known the price when I asked the assistant who told me it might b free but didnt return With my quote i would not pay 75 I would have used wax.. so sad I called other offives and on the phone they told me it would be free to snip the wirr if I am comfortable. My husband had dental work done there went back because there was an issue with it and they don't do that in office but yet 8 Hour round trip in a snowstorm and they have the audacity to send us a bill! I waited three weeks after getting fitted and drilled for a dental crown, which was scheduled to be in, and I waited a half hour on the day I was supposed to get the permanent crown to replace the temporary one. They then told me it hadn't come in! They had asked me to confirm through text message that I would be there on the scheduled day. But the order for the crown never went through because of some glitch! They said they would re-submit and re-schedule. But why didn't they confirm they had or didn't have the crown before I went to all the trouble of showing up to get the permanent one installed? Bad customer service. Very disappointing. read more

Everyone in there is so nice and welcoming! They moved to a new location fairly close to the old one. I love their new office but any who, I get my cleanings and fillings done there. For me Luda is the best dental hygienist there. Not only is she so friendly, she is great at cleaning teeth! I always ask for her every cleaning appointments I make. I would recommend her any day. Before she cleaned my teeth, someone else was doing it and not sure what happened but it messed up my gum so now food gets in there and it hurts. Not gonna mention who because I like this place and would like to give a good review for them. Great dental place though no further complaint besides that one bad experience =) read more

They always answer the phone or call me write back timely and they are very efficient with billing and insurance questions. The clinical staff never leaves me waiting long. They are thorough and delicate and always go the extra mile to make sure I'm satisfied. The dentist here told me I needed 4 cavities and a crown after looking at my x-rays from over a year ago. At my previous appointments, 6 months prior and 1 year prior, there was no mention of this. Upon getting a second opinion at a different dental office turns out that I do not have 4 cavities nor need a crown. Beware of what they tell you! My family and I stopped going here after I learned that they missed seeing four cavities in my mouth. I only learned about my cavities when I went to Portugal. My dentist in Portugal found the four cavities, all of which were superficial at the time, but still visible. In fact, the dentist pointed them out to my wife who saw them with her own eyes. Two were near my root, and if left unattended, would have led to an expensive root canal, or possibly the loss of the tooth. I will add that the dentist in Portugal fixed all four and charged me nothing. I kindly explained this to Calvert Smiles and cancelled all future appointments. The next day, I get a call from Holly the office manager, otherwise known as the witch of Dunkirk. I explained to her the same situation and she basically accused me of lying. She couldn't understand how, according to her, "my teeth were about to fall out, while having superficial cavities". Wow....enough said. I tried to help them see a problem and this witch responds like that. Hence, the reason now for my post. I'd strongly urge you to find someplace else, unless you enjoy expensive root canals and the constant peddling of invisalign. read more

On 7/25/2014 I brought my daughter in for an examination which was lead on by discomfort with her wisdom teeth. It had been approximately 6 months since her last visit which resulted in the need to remove her wisdom teeth for the lack of room in her mouth and that they become even more discomforting. So here we are expecting to pick up where we left off and possibly get referred to another clinis for wisdom teeth extraction. The visit on this day the 25th of July 2014 resulted in yet another dentist whcih either of us were familiar with disnosed numerous cavities and the need for scaling and deep cleaning. We agreed that due to the lack of timing and the fact that my daughter returning to Southwest Virginia where she resides it was beneficial to agree to the procedure that day. I discussed this with the ladies at the front desk and evaluated the insurance coverage for the procedure. I would have to agree with Sarah in a previous post stating "They've installed a new computer system, which seems to have issues with billing; unfortunately the lack of human availability compounds this problem and having no correlation to what my insurance says - somehow the answers I get don't make it into the computer system and they keep charging me for the original incorrect amount as well as financing charges." has a lot of truth. I was quoted a Treatment Plan Total which I had to split up times 2 visits because the insurance won't pay for the complete treatment in one visit. We completed the treatment plan that day within a hours time, paid for services rendered and scheduled the next appointment for Tuesday 29 July 2014 at 3:00pm to complete the other side (same procedure). We arrived at 2:45 pm for a 3:00 pm appointment and picked back up on my daughters treatment plan. Approximately 2 and one half hours later she appeared out of the treatment area with a tired / upset look on her face after sitting so long for her care. I explained to the ladies at the desk that this is unsatisfactory to be expected to sit with no explaination of the delays. I have "never" sit in or have endured 2 and one half hours at ANY dentist before. It was brought to my attention from my daughter that multiple patients were being treated at the same time by the same dentist resulting in the lack of quality time being dedicated to my daughter. It appears the workload and financial obligations may in fact interfer with individual treatment given to our children and unfortunately as earlier mentioned; the computer system charged different amounts that were expained in the beginning and quoted as the "Treatment Plan Total" I paid out of pocket more than double of the price paid on the first visit for the exact same procedure with the only difference being it took an hour and a half to accomplish the same treatment! So in conclusion; I feel less than satisfied with the customer service, computer billing deficiencies, lack of skilled workforce also compounded with computer issues and MOST of ALL the "patient to dentist" dedicated quality treatment. I feel other resources will be reviewed and considered for my families future dental needs. read more
