I went shooting at Calverton the first time I ever went shooting at all. We drove up to this empty lot and when I said I needed to go to the bathroom my friends pointed me to the portable potty.. Wait.. what? No lounge? No indoor facility to warm up in this bitter cold weather? ... sigh So We walk a short ways down a little hill to get to the field where you can shoot your shotgun. This is a no frills type of place, there is a wood table and a big open space to shoot, that is all. DO NOT GO IF YOU DO NOT KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING, make sure there are experienced shooters with you, because no one works there... well there is the guy in the jeep but he just wants your entrance fee. My friends thought me how to shoot and threw these clay discs in the air and it was a very good time. However like I said before it was a very cold day and with no place to jump inside to warm up, I did not last very long before I was in the car trying to regain sensation in my feet. read more

Don't go too crazy though, this little taste of FREEDOM is still part of New "North Korea" York. Yes, that's right. I not only shoot bubble guns, I shoot real guns. This past weekend, courtesy of the beautiful, unseasonable weather, I got to experience shooting outside for the first time. I'm not sure which makes me more nervous; being in a small, enclosed space with strangers toting weapons a foot away from me or being outside in the middle of nowhere-land surrounded by strangers toting weapons a foot away from me. There are two ranges : One for Rifles which I believe is 50 yards to 200 yards and one for pistols. Pistol Range: I felt like I was in the Wild West, leaning my body on the old wood, watching sand fly as the bullets hit. Though everyone complied when "Cease Fire" was called, it wasn't regulated by anyone that actually worked there so it was completely at random. I've found this activity to not only be therapeutic but Holy muscle wake up. I think there should be a 1 hour a week class just to tone your upper body. Rifle Range: Tables with various seats (I sat on a stump) line the range. It was packed and we could only shoot at the 200 yard tables (and yes, I hit the target :P) Three trips to the target = 1200 yards of walking. Cease Fire was called every 15 minutes or so by a man sitting in a short tower over looking the range. We actually met some great people, very communal crowd which made me feel slightly safer? lol I'm sad that I've only discovered this now as the cold months ahead taunt me but it just added another fun hobby to look forward to in the spring. read more

The staff here are super nice and easy going! Very affordable prices ($15/person for all day). If you are going to come here in the summer time, I would really suggest you wear sunscreen, as there is no roof (I learned that the hard way). On my way to the Hamptons from the City I passed the Calverton Range. My Son always wanted me to take him shooting. We entered a road and eventually found the range. Unfortunately for us it was closing time. Me and my Son were unable to have his dream day. On the way out. We noticed a signposted. It said shooting lesons by Wolf. Turns out my Son was eager to do it! I called Mr. Wolf and he was available the next day. Turns put Wolf was great! He even provided his firearm. A Georgous slugger 22 cal Long Arm with an excellent scope. His lessons were very good for a new firearm enthusiast. My Son fired about 50 rounds without missing the target once. My thoughts are that Calverton Shooting Range is a great place to target practice. There rules are extremely strict as they should be! They take no chances! Great safety! Strongly recommended! 5 stars! I came back another time with my Son and brought my Nephew. This second time the Rifle was not as good as the Slugger but did the job. My Son Hit the target all 12 shots with 10 bullseye's AND NO SCOPE! Not bad for a new shooter that's only 12 years old. read more

Been coming to this range for YEARS and have always had an awesome time. I've been to other ranges on Long Island and they all don't have what calverton offers, a SAFE but relaxed atmosphere. I've been to numerous ranges all over the countries in "free states" and all in between. I can honestly say calverton has a certain je ne sais quoi that I haven't found at other ranges. Only bad part is some range officer(s) believe that they're Rambo or something and try to belittle some folks on the range but I haven't seen that dude in a while, he deployed (he made sure to make periodic announcements on the megaphone about how he's getting deployed and was fishing for appreciation or some high horse BS). Overall, this range is awesome and you won't be disappointed at all, just make sure you know gun safety (if you own a firearm there's no excuse for NOT knowing how to be safe) read more

Normally I would say I have a great time here however the owners clearly do not have any regard for their customers. My buddy checked their website and nowhere on the website does it state that they are closed Monday-Friday in the month of February. Drove all the way out here to find a little sign stating these new closing hours. Disappointing to say the least. Great location 1 flat rate all day per person not per station which allows you and friends to take up two stations and share one so the ppl next to you don't shower you in shells. It's out door fresh air and every employee and shooter that I have met seems to be friendly everyone chats and checks out each other's guns swap tips ect... The range is a range crappy target stands you need to secure your targets well and that can be a pain due to the poor conditions of the target stands n boards. You will need to bring ammo and targets and staple gun and your own guns. As well as a cooler with good and drinks or be raped by the prices in the RV FOOD TRUCK. It's my fav range personally n I won't go anywhere else during the nice weather months. The bad? Far as hell to get to. No rapid shooting, no privacy do unfortunately you get the occasional other shooter who has 2 cents to say about your guns or how you shoot lol. read more

There were 4 of us and we shot over 900 rounds with rifles and we did some skeet shooting with some shotguns and burned up lots of money lol. Lots of fun! Pretty affordable place to let some tension out for $15 of all day shooting (cash only). The guy operates out of his Jeep which I found amusing. The workers are laid back and arent overly uptight about gun safety regulations. I felt safe the entire time with other patrons being very conscious of how to behave at the range. If it is your first time here, be sure to bring ear protection as some people shoot some very big rounds. If you have sensitive hearing, doubling it up with ear plugs with ear muffs might be a good bet. There is a hotdog stand that operates out of an RV there if you need any soda or dirty water dogs. From how the RV looks from the outside, I wouldnt even use a ketchup packet from there. read more

Went there apparently on a closed day except all of the gates were open so I drove up but stayed up top and didn't enter the range, saw a jeep driving down below and asked the guy if the range was open today. He came back at me with an attitude and disrespect. The gates were open and the signs weren't off to the side. Completely unprofessional and disrespectful. Always liked this range until a very serious problem today. I had just arrived and was setting up on the 200 yard space. They gave the signal to go to the targets. I went down range and put my target up but since I was the only person at that distance everyone had returned before me. The range master gave the ok to open fire while I was at the other end. Luckily I was not near where the others were shooting but I did get yelled at through the bullhorn in front of everyone as if somehow this was my fault. I'm sorry but YOU need to check to make sure everyone has returned REGARDLESS of whatever time frame you've made up in your head that I need to get things done. Safety is number one and you dropped the ball and could have gotten me killed. The only reason you get 2 stars is because I know it's one idiots mistake. 7/8/17 read more

I've been using this range for about 2 decades, never had an issue personally or within our group. The rangemaster and staff are there to ensure everyone is safely honing their skills. I've only witnessed a handful of disciplinary actions in the 20 years I've been going. And those were because someone was being a jackass and/or posing a danger on the range. read more

Hope this place never changes! The last of a dying breed of shooting ranges. The only place where true freedom exists on Long Island is the Calverton range. Fun can be had here for all, but as for any range, it doesn't come without a bit of cautiousness. So please have your gun wits about you when firing at Calverton. There is only a range chief on the rifle line, and the line is wide. He mainly only calls cease fires through a horn and sounds the horn when the line line goes hot. He cannot watch over everyone and the last couple times I was there he was an elderly gentlemen so I doubt he can even see that far. The shotgun/pistol line governs itself and I wouldn't want it any other way! All opinions aside, this is still a gun range so be mindful and aware of your surroundings. Some peoples gun safety skills may lack more than others and its up to all in the gun community to ensure no incidents or accidents occur. So just keep an eye out for cowboys and no messing about. With that being said, time to have some fun! Its $15 to shoot all day! Sometimes the guy to collect the money is at the entrance, sometimes he moving about. Usually in a black wrangler I believe. There is a trailer acting as an ammo store but personally I'd advise any and all to purchase rounds prior to arrival. The asking prices weren't excessively high, but they definitely weren't to my likes. However, the selection they have is a different story all together, it is vast. If you need it, Im almost certain they have it. I would assume they have ear/eye protection in there as well but I've never checked so please don't take my word for that. Best to come prepared. Also, the trailer is the only form of "indoors" at the range. (Aside from the porter potties - the only form of bathroom there. Worth mentioning to your gal friends.) After stepping out of your car you will be exposed to the elements and sounds of guns firing. I enjoy my hearing and even the furthest parking spot is still pretty much on "the line" so, I tend to put my hearing protection on prior to stepping foot outside of the car. To each to his/her own though. The weekends tend to get crowded. I suggest early morning on a weekday. Once on the line you'll notice the wooden shooting benches (which definitely have some history). And either a wooden bench to sit on, a plastic chair to sit on, or no chair to sit on. Either way, the shooting benches (tables) seem a little high, so if your bench rest shooting I suggest some phone books to sit on. If on the rifle line, wait for the cease fire horn and the range chief to yell. On the shotgun line, step back and put your hand in the air with thumbs down. As more people become ready to swap out their targets they will do the same. After you've successfully created a trend and come together as a community, everyone will cease fire. Once again, everyone has to come together through watching each other and using hand signals and a bit of respect to facilitate a cease fire. This might sound some what odd but its actually a really simple ordeal and more times then not really brings people together. I honestly wish all ranges were like this. Anyhow, for your sake, purchase targets when buying ammo, and bring a staple gun. The target stands are approx. 2 square feet wide and I even bring some cardboard and zip-ties. Sometimes theres a "floater" target stand with no back. So I like to snag it and use the cardboard and zip-ties to make it useable. Then you have a close and long range target. I and usually everyone else there shoots paper. On rare occasion I have witnessed the shooting of fruit or pumpkins, ect. I haven't seen this in a while so not sure if its still acceptable. Shooting tannerite here is absolutely NOT allowed, do not attempt it. The ground is excessively littered with spent brass and the entire premises is sand. So I would advise your lady not to wear her stilettos. It is "police your own brass," but obviously no one does, ever. And although you would get away with going prone, Im sure it wouldn't be comfortable. All shooting positions are a go at this place, your not tied to the bench. I also suggest a spotting scope or binoculars, not only for the rifle range but for the shotgun line as well. I think I've pretty much covered all the basics. Yes the place is beat up and filthy and no they don't have flushable toilets. To be honest, I am not looking to eat off the floors and I am not spending the night. I want a place where I can go shoot my guns however I want for as long as I want with whoever I want. And I don't want someone breathing down my neck or telling me shit while I do it! And thus, the reason to go to Calverton. read more

Usually go here, never had a problem before, not safety nazis like some other ranges. Went to their skeet shooting range for the first time and the guy charged me and my buddy $20. No problem. Then we went over to the target range for 10min and he charges us another $15. Upon telling him we just paid $20 he says well it's how I pay my bills, I have to charge you for each range. We asked if there's a military discount and us both having our IDs he laughs and says "No cause everyone here is military and LE, it won't pay my bills" good to know he supports us. Says a lot about this guys character. Just because of his attitude towards his customers I won't be returning. Seems like things slow down in the winter, it was very empty for a Saturday and he doubles charges customers to make up for it. Great business practice. So be warned if you go to the target range or skeet range you'll be charged for moving your car to the other. read more

This is a great place to shoot. I would have given it 5 stars, but it needs a little updating. But it's 5 stars for fun & the fact that you don't have any wannabe range experts busting your chops. That might seem a bit dangerous, but, I've never heard of anyone getting hurt there in over 20 years; so it seems to work. I'm an NRA Rifle & Pistol Instructor & I always bring my whistle to get every ones attention for cease fires & target checks. I've never had a problem as "the type of people" who frequent this "in the sticks" range all seem to be well behaved, friendly & willing to share information, tools & friendship. I pray this range does well & stays open. It's definitely 5 stars for casual fun. Being able to drive your car right up to the shooting point is definitely FIVE STARS. read more

I go here when I am shooting with a group of friends, it's more open and conducive for that. I LOVE that you back your car up to your bench, so you don't have to carry all your gear to your bench from a parking lot. You have to get there very early on weekends to make sure you can all get spots next to each other. As the others have said, it is a more easy-going atmosphere than the other local range, BUT it is not lax when it comes to safety. They are very quick to correct mistakes and many of the customers will also self-police and let others know if they're doing something wrong. It is no frills, they do have a porta-potty and a food truck for coffee, soda, snacks and there is a trailer where you can buy ammo if need be, but I'm sure it's at a premium. read more

My only issues are, I've seen people that don't know what there doing, can't fix that, and there's no real bathroom. I was there today for the first time for a police combat association pistol match and was told to be there by 8:15am for shooting at 9.. when I arrived at 8:55 due to bad weather, the gate was closed. Next to it there was another gate that was open and had fresh car tracks as if that's how you enter so I followed those tracks and drove slowly into the range. Following me was the jeep that you'll read about in other posts - pulled up next to me and asked " did you just violate my chain-link fence? " Confused, I said hello and asked if there is a match still going on today for the police combat association and he said "it doesn't matter, you're not welcome here .." I disregarded his response and asked again.. His reply, was "I said it doesn't matter, get off my property now. You're not welcome here, you violated my fence!" So I left. I don't know if I was more annoyed of the fact of how disrespectful the guy in the Jeep was or how long it took me to actually get out there and not get to shoot having this being the end result. There's plenty of other ranges and I most likely won't be back. I think I'd rather go to an indoor range on a nice day then pay that man money to shoot outside on a nice one.. read more

I've been coming to the Calverton Range since the early 1980's. Some things never change and the Calverton Range is one of them. I love shooting here. The range officers, Ron and Rich are friendly and helpful while still keeping an eye out for your safety. The OTHER Brookhaven Range employs obnoxious range officers that feel it's their job to yell at everyone. Calverton has 50, 100, 200 and even 300 yard targets for rifle and a separate area for pistols and shotguns. They also have a skeet shooting area. The ammo trailer has a good selection of ammo and targets you might need but you should be prepared to pay higher than normal prices. Overall, the Calverton range isn't the prettiest or cleanest range I've been to but it's comfortable and friendly to newbies and veterans alike. Beats the hell out of any other range on Long Island. read more

NOTE: THE LOW RATING IS NOT FOR THE RANGE but for the instructor, Wolf. The range itself is alright. It's by no means fancy but a pretty chill set up with lots of space. I recently bought my first rifle and scope. I needed help sighting it in and with very limited rifle knowledge, thought it best to take a lesson so I felt confident going to a range by myself. I took a private lesson with Wolf, who's listed on the range website. That was a mistake. $150/hr. for a lesson is a bit steep but if you're going to do so, you want to make the most of that hour, not pause every few minutes for Wolf to reminisce or remind you AGAIN that you're paying for his years of experience, while he smokes cigarettes. That had to be the most watered down lesson I have ever taken. What mildly useful info I did take away could've been summed up in less than 10 minutes. Frankly, a YouTube video would've sufficed. You'd think someone, with all his "experience," and professed love for the manufacturer of my gun would be able to figure out how to correctly load the magazine relatively easy. After beating the sh*t out of my gun as he repeatedly slammed the magazine in incorrectly, he tried blaming the gun saying it might be broken. As I quickly grew anxious and tired of watching him whack my gun, I intervened. A quick look and I figured out how the magazine was supposed to go in. Embarrassed, Wolf tried to pass it off saying he'd never shot the gun before. Yeah...NEITHER HAVE I, nor many rifles at all for that matter. During the lesson, I asked him about the furthest distance I could expect with the rifle and Wolf said about 50 yards. Afterward, I checked online and asked 2 other people to learn...it's more like 200+ yards. That's a huge difference which, all in all, leads me to think Wolf is nothing more than a BS'er. I'd recommend hitting up the range, as I likely will again, but if you're looking for lessons....do your homework. There are good instructors on the island, Wolf is just not one of them. read more

Really??...This place is a shooters heaven ....Its very simple (not complex brain surgery) you drive their park you car, find your designated spot (rifle, pistol, and shotgun)....AND SHOOT!....Some of these comments are complaining that there is no in door areas for warmth etc....You kidding me? To cold? DONT GO THEN!....Its very simple you pay the initial fee and thats it...Many ranges are incredibly expensive, filled with range bosses (that are generally obnoxious)...A list a mile long with rules rules and more rules....This is freedom at its best...if your inexperienced don't go by yourself and take some lessons...dugh!....I pray this place never changes! read more

I went there with my son for the first time last month. We got there on a saturday about 10 am. There were only a few people there. This was the first time that my son and I were going to shoot our new shotgun. I told the range master that this was our first time and he went above and beyond to help us out. OK first off... Shithole. This place has not been cleaned in years. More brass on the ground than sand. From the looks of them, the benches were used as targets. A couple more points.... I see alot of people writing "lax rules and regs, lax safety officers". Folks, do we want "lax" rule enforcement when it comes to a gun range??? The only reason this place is in business is because of the price and the availability. As anyone one knows, low prices draw a "low" crowd... with rifles. I've been there a few times. One time sticks in my mind. Enjoying my day, when a truck full of about 7 hillbilly kids get out and start blasting off an AK. No big deal, until one of the kids passed me with his muzzle. I kept my cool and advised the oldest one (about 19 years old) if it happens again...there will be an issue. This place was the Wild West until, thank god, the ATF put an end to shooting LAW rockets at abandoned cars and old refrigerators downrange. Don't get me wrong, the clientele is decent, but, like anything else, a few bad apples ruin it. I prefer the pistol section. There, people are LE or permitted to shoot. In my opinion, they tend to be more mindful. You need valid ID and I think a library card to purchase a rifle in NYS, and it shows at this place. I agree with what others have said. I've been going to this range since the mid 80's when that older guy would take your money at the gate and you could shoot away to your heart's content. It's gotten a bit more organized since then, there was never anyone in charge and ceasefires were done at the community level. For all the negatives everyone has mentioned this is still, in my opinion, the best range on long island. There are others but some are VERY expensive and others are very restrictive like allowing only five shots in a magazine and no rapid fire. If they put a little money into it, yes, it would be more user friendly and comfortable, but then it would also be much more popular and expensive, essentially ruining it like almost everything else on long island. This is a trip to the past on how ranges used to be, let's hope it continues well into the future. read more
