Just recently took a safety class with Chris and I have to say it was a great experience. As a first time gun owner and a woman the staff and Chris have never been condescending to me. They have treated me and talked to me with respect and answers all my questions when I first came in to purchase my gun once I got my license. I highly recommend taking the safety course, I've shot guns before but I did not know the ins and out of my weapon. Chris went over everything and provided me with a lot of safety information and showed me how to break down my gun to not just clean it but clear it if it jams. We also spent time in the range. It was well worth the money spent, for all the knowledge and tips he provided. read more

I just finished taking the concealed carry class this week and it was great! Glenn Schaefer and Rob Kerr were great instructors. Joe DeTurra was a great help on the range qualification, as well as a great employee in general. As for the course itself, it's a USCCA certified course, so you know it's legit. No sure you can say that about the other courses out there. These guys have a wealth of experience and knowledge. They cover everything in the book, no skipping, and that's a good thing. Plus, they give you the real deal advice. They take this very seriously while having a great time teaching it because better, safer shooters benefits everyone. I am 100% a more educated and safer shooter after taking this course. Plus, Glenn personally helped me on the range. Yes, it's live fire and they will have you shoot way more to qualify than other courses. I had my best shooting the night of the qualification, and I have them to thank for it. If you want to take a CCW course, take it at DSI . As a side note, my second firearm was a DS-15 purchased at DSI. Is it Gucci? No. Is it quality? Absolutely. I've had it since 2021 and have had zero problems with it. I love that gun. Accurate. Reliable. Fun. The facility and the range are bright, clean, up-to-date, and spacious. It's visually appealing and makes you want to be there. It's my preferred range to train at and finally got myself a membership. I highly recommend a membership if you want to be a shooter and not just a firearm owner. Go and go often. Keep your skills sharp and a membership will save you a ton of money. If you see any reviews that say the staff talks down to you, nonsense... unless you go there and do stupid $H!T, which unfortunately people do all too often. Handling deadly weapons is not the time to be lax or careless and they have to be on their toes all of the time, so if you do something that you shouldn't, their going to let you know and be very direct and blunt about it. Glenn has given me a hard time several times over the past few years, and I'm still here giving him praise, so I guess I appreciated it because I'm a more responsible owner and shooter as a result. I guess the answer to that would be not to go to DSI if you're overly sensitive, but then again, you probably shouldn't own a firearm if you are because the kick of your .22 LR will bruise your ego and your shoulder. read more

The first time I went into Dark Storm Industries in Oakdale, a very courteous young man (I'm sorry I don't recall his name) helped me. I had gotten my pistol license some time ago, and was finally looking to purchase one. The young man showed me several options, and as I was looking, the manager, Glenn Schaffer, approached my husband and me. I was having a very difficult time racking the pistols, and he kindly showed me how to do it in a much easier manner. I was very impressed with the great customer service and the cleanliness of the store. I used the restroom and was even more impressed at its cleanliness of it. It sparkled clean!! Glenn told us about the classes there at DSI, and a few weeks ago I had my first class with Rob. Rob was terrific! I learned so much more than I ever expected. He was patient, explained everything thoroughly, making sure I understood everything and after each category he taught, he asked if I had any questions. Rob first emphasized SAFETY, SAFETY, SAFETY! He explained safety is paramount, and he taught me home defense, how and where to safely store my pistol, that you never really want to use it unless you have to, and so much more. After classroom time, we went to the indoor range, and Rob went through stance, posture, grip, sight position, trigger pull, and more. He even explained how to specifically wash my hands after shooting at the range. He took his time pointing out my errors in a very constructive manner and made me feel very comfortable. I found the experience to be much more than I expected, and had fun learning and practicing. Rob is an excellent instructor, and I plan to take other classes with him. When my class was over, Rob explained that anytime I would like to come to the range there, I could ask for assistance if I forgot anything, or had questions. He said the employees there would be pleased to help me. Later, we spoke with Glenn Schaffer again, and he truly made us feel welcome and comfortable. I'm looking forward to returning and taking additional classes. I highly recommend DSI, and especially recommend Rob as an instructor. read more

Very nice store .. the appearance is amazing the guns are displayed in a wall that's back lit and looks bad ass.. Kevin was great he showed me the sig 365 and I was able to try it out at the range on site can't beat that !! It was my first time coming here. Everyone who we talked to and helped us were awesome. Very friendly group. Store was super clean and stocked with a lot of items. No issue with parking. We spent an hour in the range. The digital controls were pretty cool ..time remaining was on it , getting the target back etc. They had shelves for your things. It was clean when coming in. The Range here although it only has 6 lanes is great. I've been here twice and it is always clean with new target backings. The electronic targets are very cool and user friendly. They finally were honest and admitted the delays were not covid related and there barrels were mis-manufactured and that resulted in longer then expected delay. I've been a member here for sometime and while I do like this gun store, I will not be renewing my membership. For one it's a "tactical" shop and I guess that means they really only serve the AR crowd. I'm not complaining about that it's just that if you are the hunter type they won't really have the products you're looking for. Their weapon selection is very limited and their ammo prices are pretty high, there are definitely better spots to buy ammo. Maybe that last bit is unfair; any retail store will be more expensive than bulk online. But the main reason I won't be renewing is because so many of the employees (not all of them, Mike and Christian are 2 of the nicer guys there) treat me like I'm a moron fudd. I'm not a gunsmith or a seasoned gun expert. I know how to shoot and stay safe and take care of my weapons but I trust the services of a gunsmith over my rudimentary knowledge. These guys are my closest gun shop. On several occasions I've brought one of my hunting rifles in to have the smith work on something with it and I've been told oh we don't work on those guns, bye Felicia! Or you come in an stand around at the counter for 15 minutes being ignored. If you got to wait whatever but at least an acknowledgment you are there is nice. The range is small too and only has 6 lanes. This place isn't a bad business by any stretch, just some elitist employees, a very focused product line, less competitive pricing and limited selection leaves me going to the shops that are further away. Last bit definitely not least, if I were building a sweet AR,(I'm not because well NYS) I would come here. read more

My experience with DSI from ordering my firearm to pickup was exemplary, the process well organized and seamless. Ordering accessories online simple with quick shipping or ready for pickup fairly quick. Before leaving with my new firearm, I signed up for their firearm Safety and Fundamental Training Private Lesson which I took a few weeks later because of the popularity. Upon arriving for my lesson I was greeted by Mike, a Veteran and former Marine. The classroom portion Mike went over general Firearm Safety, he went over rifle parts and functions taking time to answer questions that I had. He went over and I practice the proper firing stance explaining the reasoning behind it prior to going to the range. At the range Mike went over loading and reinforcing the ammunition type discuss in classroom. During the live fire exercise, Mike made adjustments and gave great advice. Have to say putting to practice classroom portion was fun. The lesson ended with firearm maintenance and cleaning. I've been a customer of Darkstorm for a few years now and I can't even begin to express how amazing they are. Let's start with the staff: I have gotten to know a few of the guys. Glen, Kevin and the rest are beyond accommodating and extremely knowledgeable. The products they manufacture are the Gold Standard in AR's. My M&P AR is now a dust collector since I purchased a DS15. No comparison whatsoever. Pricing: They refuse to price gouge on ammo. Every other seller on Long Island are pigs when it comes to taking advantage of this ammo shortage. It's very refreshing to see a business not take advantage of its customers. Rage: If you've ever been to any range in the nation, be prepared to get spoiled. Air quality is amazing, cleanliness is spotless and most important... Range officer's are always looking with safety as the number one priority. I purchased a DS-9 Typhoon for my son two years ago to shoot PCC. Sence then we have been dealing with problem after problem in addition to just trying to keep the thing running. I tried light loads, heavy load, at least 5 different brands of ammunition and have had no luck. The bolt catch broke last year, now the safety is locking up. We have feeding, extracting, ejecting and bolt locking back issues. We can't shoot more than two stages and not have a malfunction of some type. For a $1300 gun neither me nor my 12-year-old is impressed. I am not even sending it back, I will find someone who wants to deal with it and take the big loss. read more

Older Gentleman with white hair and glasses was very rude to me and my family! I went in with my brother and his son to help them pick out a rifle. (I'm an Army war veteran with over 20 years of service). He was obnoxious, put his hand up in my face and said I was not needed and to step away! (We were all wearing masks). Needless to say they were very uncomfortable and did not purchase a rifle. I do have to say that someone else did step in to help my brother with his shotgun issue and were very polite and extremely helpful. The store is a good size, very organized, great prices on the items I looked at and extremely friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable staff. As I was browsing, 2-3 different associates came over to see if I needed help and chatted with me about what I was looking for and how they can help. I spoke to a gentleman at the handgun counter I believe was named Mike and he was very nice, letting me know they also had a range which I wasn't aware of. I recently travelled from New Jersey for several hours of one-on-one instruction in the care and operation of my recently purchased DSI Variant 1 rifle. This is a precision machined rifle with tight tolerances and high end features and components, and I was therefore motivated to seek out the most authentic information possible, directly from the source. My DSI instructor, Rob, did not disappoint. Following the initial discussion in the DSI classroom on general principles of safety, home defense, and range etiquette, I was provided hands on instruction in field stripping and cleaning and lubricating the rifle, something I was having a hard time with based on self education via YouTube. I was especially impressed with the way Rob was able to logically explain and highlight characteristics of the various components during this portion of our instruction. In the last phase of our instruction, shooting at the DSI range, Rob provided me critical feedback on my fundamental mechanics - stance, posture, grip, sight picture acquisition, and trigger pull. I'm confident that the drills I was shown will be useful in taking my proficiency and accuracy to the next levels over the coming months. Overall, I had a great experience. I especially appreciated that my instructor was such a good listener, and although I am a new, first time firearms owner, I was never made to feel intimidated or unwelcome at any point. Ok. I'm not an expert gun guy. I have a small collection. I don't hunt. I've been to a gun range twice in my 38 years and fired a total of 25 rounds on said ranges. 20 of those at Dark Storm. I do my target and clay shooting up in the Catskills on private property. I've been doing it for 30+ years without incident and safety is a priority. But, I've been to many gun shops and I know what I like and what I don't like. I like this place. I recently came here to expand my collection on the recommendation of a friend. I wanted an AR. Which is a major technological upgrade from my old bolt and lever action rifles, and pump shotguns. I had been shopping around for quite some time before buying at DSI. I came back several days later for some questions about accessories. The place is IMMACULATE. No rusty, musty smell like most shops. Really cool displays and a very welcoming vibe. Modern. The only slight negative I could speak to was the ammo shelves being somewhat empty. Maybe the stuff was just moving fast. Most shops talk down to a guy like me. Most shops treat you like they are doing you such a big favor by taking $1000, or so, of your hard earned money. Most shops have people working there who roll their eyes because you have the nerve to ask a simple question about a gun or about their experienced opinion. In short, most shops are filled with JERKOFFS. NOT DSI. Very friendly. Very helpful. Very personable. EVERY SINGLE PERSON I TALKED TO. They gave me a free hour on the range when I bought my rifle. I told them I only wanted to run one magazine through the gun to get better acquainted with how it functioned. As soon as I got set up, I had a problem and my first round didn't fire. I realized later that it was my own fault for not resetting the charging handle properly. The RSO saw that I was having a problem on the CCTV and came right in to help me. No BS lecture or talking to me like a child. He just HELPED ME OUT with my brand new rifle. Had no problems after that and I appreciated the help very much. Even ran a second magazine through. Probably would have stayed longer but the range isn't very long and is definitely better suited for pistols. I have a gun shop 1 mile from my house. But, I will make the 25 minute drive to DSI from now on. read more

I've been going here more regularly since I recently purchased a pistol and rifle. There was the initial hesitancy on my behalf of trying not to look stupid. But don't worry, you will. :) The staff is very knowledgeable and to the point. They were helpful in pointing out concerns with my rifle, even sized it up AFTER I adjusted. They are cautious to not let just anyone in to the range. They need to be really careful, especially in NY where I'd bet the state would foam at the mouth to come down on a popular arms dealer. The range is clean, and professional. If you plan on using the range a lot I'd become a member cause it adds up. Great place all around. Smart staff. Awesome selections. read more

There are so many amazing things I can say about DSI. I just completed the New York State approved CCW class, and it was above and beyond anything I could have imagined. The knowledge that Glenn, Rob, Anthony and his team have to deliver related to this class will literally open your eyes. All of the IMPORTANT information is delivered in a way that helps you understand and absorb. While Glenn and his team are instructing you on all of the information related to the class, they are also discussing so many things that you would most likely not have thought about (when attending a class just to get the cert.) Glenn and his team literally present to you as if you are handling a firearm for the first time, knowledge, form, technique and most of all RESPECT related to what you are doing and why. The class was beyond informative, the qualification portion of the class was exactly as discussed leading up to it and they could not have made you feel more comfortable and confident every step of the way. Glenn and his team do not treat you like a customer, they treat you as an extension of what they are and how passionate they are about what they do each and every day. I cannot speak in regards too other classes given at other locations, but I would be hard pressed to think that any of them can come close to the knowledge, experience and confidence you will feel during and once have completed the course given at Dark Storm Industries. P.S. Is a couple more dollars really going to matter if you are taught the wrong thing and potentially make a life changing decision?
