The Cambria Cemetery is in the largest grove of Monterey pines in California and overlooks the sea. There are 1200 trees on the grounds. In addition to the Monterey pines there are coastal live oaks, Toyon trees (Christmas berry), California pepper trees, and other native flowers and grasses. This cemetery is unique because it allows the families and friends of the deceased to decorate the graves. There are things like bird feeders, wind chimes, benches and other mementos scattered around the grounds. There were a lot of birds and butterflies fluttering about. We did not have much time to spend here. After a quick walk around I saw there were inscribed granite rocks, metal, military markers, and carved marble grave markers. Names have faded away on the wooden headstones. This cemetery opened in 1870 and is still active. When I make my elephant seal trip next year I will be sure to return and spend more time exploring the grounds.

Reflect, Renew, Rejuvenate. I love this.

Q: So who goes "cemetery touring" on a sunny day in April? A: Me. =} I found Cambria's cemetery by simply following the signs while cruising around the quaint downtown area of Cambria. Soaking up the "local flavor", ya know. You must travel maybe a mile North from downtown, up a lazy, winding road to get to the top of one of the surrounding hills. This is where you will find this unique destination. Expect to pass by ranches, dense forests of pine trees, ancient California oaks, until you finally reach an unobtrusive gate. You might think I am a bit "odd" when it comes to this fascination. On road trips, I have to resist the temptation to slam the brakes and do a U-ey if I see one. One of my most favorite places in SF is the Victorian era Columbarium. http://www.yelp.com/biz/neptune-society-of-northern-california-san-francisco There is something about poignant memorialization of loved ones, reading old headstones, feeling the ever-present vibes; it does a weird but captivating number on me and my belief in life after death. And even though my own remains will most likely just become sterile planter mix once my days on earth are finished, I feel that pull to go and just respectfully visit. Entire family plots, weathered ancient headstones, names and dates of pioneers who made this area their home more than a century ago, brilliant flowers, and colorful (sometimes humorous) custom art, this place seems like a most celebratory cemetery. I drove the complete 1/4 mile (maybe) loop, because it was just vast enough and I did not want to miss the sweet character of this place. Yep, you need to hop out of the car at different points and simply walk and appreciate. Granted, I know no one who rests here, but it struck me as one of the most fun, peaceful, loving cemeteries I have ever had the privilege to encounter.

Just maybe the most beautiful cemetery anywhere. So peaceful listening to the trees. A quiet spot for meditation.

I am so very grateful to Reis Family Mortuary for the support they gave me with my dad's funeral! I…read moreespecially love how the gentleman that brought his body to the church went above and beyond to make sure that he kept checking the mail to see if his hat arrived which we had shipped. Knowing how much it meant to me, he went back and got it then was able to deliver it within minutes to the start of the funeral service. My dad would have called that "divine intervention." I also want to complement the make up artist for the amazing job she did making my dad look like himself. I highly recommend Reis.

We received this recommendation to use Reis, and when we called Thursday afternoon their message…read moreservice center said they were out for the day and to call back the next day, and when we did the lady who answered was not only unprofessional but had no compassion. We let them know our sister suddenly passed away and to fulfill her wishes we requested to have an open casket and the representative from Reis said they needed to see the body first. She proceeded to tell me "do you understand what they do during an autopsy? I can give you the details". I was horrified and so shocked and abruptly said "NO" and she proceeded to tell me about all of the incisions my sister would have on her body. When I asked to meet with somebody that afternoon, she told me there were no appointments available. Not once did she say sorry for your loss or anything consoling. She was so crass and truly heartless. Being from out of town we needed to find a funeral home right away and stopped by Marshall-Spoo Sunset Funeral Chapel who welcomed us with open arms (without an appointment) and showed the compassion we so needed.
