But the overall course wasn't in bad shape for the weather conditions we've had recently. Last fall when I was visiting I didn't have my clubs, so rented a set from the clubhouse...definitely wasn't expecting a "top of the line" clubs, but definitely wasn't expecting to get "third world country" rejects for $25 /day rentals. And that is what I received, a complete mix match set to make due. Overlooking the fact of the clubs, I had a day of enjoying time with my son playing a round of golf for his birthday. So, yesterday he returned the favor and we played 9 for my birthday. But yesterday I used a set from his friend--which was better that using the house clubs--the 3 of us got the 9 rounds in as it got dark. The course should be in better shape once Spring kicks in.

The bartenders were great! The cocktails were delicious! The wings were also tasty! We had a lot of fun playing mini golf. Your mall is chipped so it automatically keeps score. The holes have bright colors and each one is different. This is a fun group activity!!!

They have four courses to play from. You don't get to choose. They assign you based on the availability. I'm not sure if unlimited means you can play all four courses without repeat and if you can play more than four times (conceptually). They offer half off a second course when you're booking one. You get that offer when paying at the kiosk on the spot, but my friend got a similar deal afterwards via email. Unfortunately, the deal was gone either after she clicked into it or the day after (confusing terms). We actually considered going the next day to play again (full price) but turns out the place was closed for a private event. Imagine we paid online to show up seeing that they aren't available...lame. We were assigned to play in the amber course. Each course is named after a color. They're similar but slightly different, but I won't feel like I'm missing out by not playing all four. It took us approximately 30min to get through the course considering slight delays waiting for the group ahead to finish and technical issues with the courses. I can imagine it taking longer on a weekend and earlier in the evening for corporate happy hours. Most groups were only 2 people. Puttshack is unique where their ball is "smart". Each ball is assigned to a player, and it can keep track of how many times you hit it. It's great for ease of scorekeeping. The courses themselves felt a bit easy. I'm not saying I got everything in hole in one, but I never felt frustrated completing any of them. I don't get the ball in due to my skill of getting it in the hole not because of the complexity of the course. They try to incorporate things like trivia and moving parts in there, but it's never a situation where they won't let you through until you complete something. You'll get through eventually somehow.

Driving out to the northeast brought out a ton of old memories. I used to play golf at John F. Byrne across the street as well as sled there when the snow came. Driving up to the clubhouse of the Donald Ross designed course the bag attendants are ready with a smile to take your clubs and directions anywhere on the property. Upon making it into the locker room the locker room attendant quickly offered to shine up my shoes and showed me to a locker I could use for the day. The locker room is a double deck all brand new with 12" shower heads to wash away those bad swings after the round. The pro shop staff was a treat to interact with from start to finish. The help they showed in the pro shop was top notch and the products they offered were equally top line, really nice swag here. Now, the golf course is where that last star was left off. Don't get me wrong, it's a nice course, tees are perfect, fairways are well defined and mostly in good shape, bunkers are a dream to play from (both fairway and greenside) rough was heavy in some areas and light in others but the courses real challenge doesn't come from the tee or fairway, it comes from the greens. These things are hellacious. Being long of the pin to start your day on 1 and 3 is a death wish! I genuinely didn't believe a putt would stay on the green on 3 (because it didn't on 1) so I gave it a little nippy chip down the hill that nearly stopped half way down and even still, I was 15'+ coming back! There's some overly challenging undulations here that weren't a big deal back in the 1890's when the course was opened since they couldn't mow the grass this tight, but with today's maintenance standards there's some serious challenges here for the everyday golfer. Besides this the course plays very fair throughout. You can be a little wild off the tee and still have a chance to score which is nice. The banquet staff here and the food was superb. All of our dishes were served correctly and the staff took great care to deliver plates from the proper side as well as clear them at the right moment and from the proper side as well, that's a nice touch. My Filet was perfectly cooked and the crab claws were so fresh, it really was a nice dinner. Overall I can see where the club wants to be, a premium club that does everything very well and that it does. The staff they have assembled is 5* start to finish but the course needs a little tightening up in some areas throughout, a few bare spots, some overly heavy rough next to some very light rough, a couple large dry dirt patches in the field of play but it's a great place to call your home course as you will certainly be tested every time you tee it up and your guests will be thrilled with the service they receive, just don't forget to keep your ball below the pin!

The salads come with mini grilled cheese croutons, which is what sold us, but they weren't as exciting as I'd hoped. The tits were fantastic with peppers and onions and a nice dipping sauce. We got lucky with street parking right outside, YMMV!
