Absolutely delightful tea store, designed for tea enjoyer or enthusiast alike. I loved this place, visiting twice in my two days in Montreal and will certainly be back. The highlight for me is the tasting table. There's six tables you can walk in and sit at, and the menu has one item per type of tea (white, green, etc). Each order comes with two contrasting teas within the category (Chinese vs Japanese green), for you to enjoy head-to-head. I hear they rotate the teas, see pic for example of the menu! The staff was very knowledgeable, friendly, and patient with my many questions. As a tea shop they have a massive selection of teas in an easily understood menu, and many quite nice teaware pieces that are reasonably priced and designed specifically by/for Camellia Sinensis. They also sell tea drinks to go! Limited selection vs tasting table, but a good variety of different tea types. There is no food. So it's a wonder that Camellia Sinensis stands out. Tucked behind the madness of Saint-Denis St, Camellia can be easily missed. It's unassuming and unalarming. We sit in a cooly-lit booth made for conversations among lovers and yakuza bosses. With so many choices-- from tea-type down to teapot: the Beaker or Gong fu Cha?-- we stick with the word of our Tea Master. Soon, our international tea tour begins. From teas that will make you hop to those that will hone you in, we lose track of time. Looking at my watch, I catch that our flight has taken us around the world in two hours. Camellia Sinesis is your run of mill zen-type teahouse nestled in the heart of the Quartier Latin. They have a very focused and interesting tea selection, that range from foresty herbals to zesty senchas, as well as a couple of lattes and absolutely fantastic pastries and cakes. I had a spruce and honey herbal tea with a matcha and butter & honey graham cheesecake. Both were divine. The interior is very calming, mostly dark tones and muted lighting, which makes for a great haven of peace and quiet in such a busy area of town. However I only graded 4 out of 5 stars since the service, although professional and welcoming, was relatively lengthy. It's best to leave ample time for ordering. read more

Absolutely loved this place!! I was in Montreal for a couple of days and despite my short stay, I ended up in this place twice! First of all, the experience was extremely memorable - you walk in, a waiter greets & seats you, brings you the tea menu with a little bell for you to ring when you're ready. Depending on the tea leaves, they serve it in different tea pots and from there on you just take a breathe and relax. Second, the tea is so good! I ordered a floral taiwanese tea the first time and the japanese sencha the second time. Both times, the waiters were patient and friendly as they walked you through how to serve the tea. I have a love for tea and tea rooms but unfortunately, there aren't too many like this back home so when I discovered this charming place, I knew I had to spend some time here. My boyfriend and I decided to come by after brunch and wow, was it a good idea. Upon entering, we were greeted with a smile and immediately seated near the window. The ambience was great and really set the mood to help us unwind. After some time looking at their extensive menu, we decided on two tea trios (colorful + unusual) and 'the quintessence' dessert. Once presented with our tea and dessert, we were given a brief description of each tea by a staff member (who I must add was so delightful). Each tea was so aromatic and rich in its own way. So when hubby and I came across Camellia Sinesis in Montreal (kind of late in the game I know), I couldn't wait to figure out a time to go for the two of us! Located in the Latin Quarter of downtown Montreal, there is a tea salon and a separate tea store right beside it on Rue Emery right across from the Cineplex movie theatre. As soon as we sat down, we were brought a sample of tea, a small bell and the menu. The tea sample was that of a very delicious (and expensive) tea that won numerous awards this year in Taiwan. Even before we tasted it, the aroma of the tea was so fragrant and with one sip, we could both definitely understand how it won many awards! We ended up purchasing a small sample of this tea after we left the tea salon because it was that good. They not only had tea but a small dessert menu, which was great for people like me. We were going to order a few desserts to share with our tea, but our server let us know about their Table d'hôte menu they were having, which consisted of 3 courses: 3 teas (black, green, and white) with a set of desserts each (so 3 desserts). It was roughly $15 per person which didn't seem like that bad of a deal, so we ordered two of those. I looked around and there were other customers having the table d'hôte as well. Soon after our first course was brought. Hubby and I were surprised that our teas were brought in a set of wine glasses! It was quite a unique idea for sure, and I personally liked having my tea served in a wine glass. My husband didn't like it so much, as he said that the tea got cold too quickly. Our first course consisted of a white tea and small platter which consisted of blackberries, a sweet mochi and fine matcha powder. The mochi had a mixture of apple and cinnamon inside, and it was okay. I prefer more glutinous rice cakes and the mochi here wasn't as glutinous as I was used to. The blackberry and matcha powder mix was great, and it was even better with our white tea. This white tea from China was my favourite of the three teas that we tasted that evening, but too bad that I forgot which ones they were! Our second course consisted of a savoury dessert with goat cheese. The green tea was again served in wine glasses, but this tea was the least favourite of the three that we tasted. I suppose hubby and I both prefer Genmaicha/matcha than the one we were given. The tea's origin was Japan, and it was quite lighter than other green teas we were used to. I personally liked the grapes we were given and it was well paired with red pepper flakes. The hotness of the red pepper and sweetness of the grapes was a hit in my books and I'd probably eat it that way at home now! The goat cheese was my hubby's favourite (he loves cheese :P). Our third and last pairing was a black tea and small soufflé with ladyfingers. By this time, we were pretty full from our previous courses so neither of us actually finished the last dessert. The tea on the other hand, also from China, was a lighter black tea with fruity notes on top. It was a nice change from the heavier, richer black teas that we were used to, and I think I'd love to have it again one day with afternoon tea. After we finished our three courses, we quickly got up and left to visit the tea store right next door as it was closing within 10 minutes of us finishing our dessert. We really wanted to brew the award-winning Oolong tea from Taiwan at home, and luckily we made it just in time before they close to buy a small packet. So when i say that when it comes to tea, in the beautiful city of Montreal, ladies and gentlemen, there is simply no finer establishment. Of the 3 tea joints I consider to be Montreal's powerhouses (CS, Ming Tao Xuan, Cardinal), this is probably the purist's choice. Camellia Sinensis (the biological name for the tea plant) is a meticulously crafted tea room, joined to a storefront where you can purchase tea and accessories. I'll be writing about the tea room, but as a tip, if you're wanting to nerd out about the stuff, go talk to the staff next door. They have a bit more time to chat, and the space isn't quite as meditative. As other reviews have mentioned, this is Zen space. Extremely quiet, device-free, and absolutely not a workstation/wifi kind of place, come here to unwind and disconnect (from email/social media/work, you can still connect with the people around you). The tea list here is extensive, and focuses more on terroir (or whatever the correct term for geography-based flavour properties of tea is), picking times and treatments than additives. There are (if I remember) a few flavoured or spiced teas, as well as the odd tisane as well. The staff are extremely knowledgeable, and are extremely accommodating in answering questions or recommending based on what you think you might enjoy, regardless of how little or much you think you know about tea. It really isn't a solemn place, despite the atmosphere--I'd say only a small percentage of the clientele are dedicated tea fanatics. You'll see tourist families taking a pit-stop after an afternoon exploring the city, PhD students scrawling red ink over drafts, twentysomethings making a civil start to an evening bound to end in debauchery. If you decide you enjoy their teas, pop next door and grab some looseleaf to brew at home. The prices may initially look steep (no pun intended), but as they'll tell you, a few grams of tea leaves will make many, many pots. The owners are also extensive travellers, spending vast amounts of time in Asia (and perhaps elsewhere?) gathering product. My first trip to the boutique led to a fascinating half hour conversation with one of them. All in all, an environment that will give you a lift, really fantastic tea that is brewed to perfection (which is something you will taste immediately if you're used to the astringency of boiling water over a bag of English Breakfast), and a decent starting point for a Jaunt in the Latin Quarter. read more

Oh man, this place is becoming a favorite. I went for a nice cuppa tea before seeing a movie across the street, and I figured that it would be kind of dead on a Friday night. No so! It was the perfect combination of lively and peaceful. Glad to know there's a weekend spot for when I'm not necessarily in the mood for a cocktail. Super knowledgeable staff and amaaazing tea. Really, you don't know what you're missing. I have heard people say that it's overpriced - I didn't really find that. Some teas are expensive, but I feel like paying $5 for a cup of really good chai spiced rooibos is okay. For some of you it may be a major downer that you aren't allowed to use your techie devices. When I went to Montreal, I got the chance to visit a lovely tea shop called Camellia Sinesis (named after a plant that is used to produce tea). This particular tea shop does not allow you to use your cellphone or laptop. I've been to other cafes where the owners prefer electronics not to be used, but this tea cafe enforces the rule. They want you to enjoy your tea in a zen atmosphere and if you are with other people, you have to keep your voice at a low level. If it gets too loud, you will hear a gong go off to remind you to keep your voice down. There were many tea options, all ranged from $5-$10 a pot if I remembered correctly. A friend and I shared the Zhenghe Hong Gong Fu ($6), which is a type of black tea. I wasn't crazy about the drink at first. My friend who I shared it with thought it was really light. However, I felt that the taste changed the second time around and it tasted better. My cousin and her boyfriend got the Rou Gui ($6), a Wuloong tea. I liked the scent of their tea and it had a softer taste. After you pay for your drinks, you can receive 10% off a bag of the tea that you just drank in the cafe. The coupon is on the receipt which you can use then or later. I thought this was a great idea to get people purchasing! There are a total of three locations in Quebec. Overall, it is a cool place to be if you would like some peace and quiet to yourself or have a place to get your creative juices flowing with a pen and paper. A great tea house with an extensive selection of teas (whites, greens, blacks, blues and reds) from around the world. It's the premiere place in Montreal to drink tea (especially since O Chai on St. Denis went out of business a few years ago). The people who work there are knowledgeable and helpful and they even greet you with a small taster cup of the tea of the day. (And you can buy tea in the adjacent tea store) My only gripe is the price of tea in China. They have a great selection but you have to pay for it. Most of the teas cost between 5 and 7 dollars per single pot. Factor in tax and tip and you're looking at 8 or 9 dollars which is more than you'd pay for the most expensive capuccino this side of Moscow's Starbucks. Of course that's for an entire pot of tea but that's still pricey. So I don't go that often but I enjoy it when I go. Although it's generally pretty crowded and sometimes hard to find a table in the cramped yet pleasant space, they have free internet and it can be a nice place to get some work done in the off hours, especially for people like myself who enjoy the distraction of pouring myself a new cup of tea every few minutes. read more

This teahouse should really be best described as a tea-temple; enter the place and you get the feeling of being in a sacred, special atmosphere, with the dim lighting and hushed conversations - if the volume ever goes up too much, a gong is heard and noise level quickly falls. To order, ring the little bell at the table. The tea menu is too exhaustive for my indecisive; however, it is sure to hold plenty of variety to satisfy picky tea-drinkers. I could go at length regarding the variety or the difference between the different kinds of format that were offered, pouring and brewing techniques and whatnot. However, my biggest disappointing was not enjoying my cup of matcha; it lacked a certain je-ne-sais-quoi to it, and at nearly 10$ the cup, I was hoping of knock-me-off-my-socks tea! I'm not, exactly, a huge fan of "frou frou" tea-tasting and the type of people that usually come along with it BUT I must admit, I've gone to Camellia Sinensis 3 times, already, for their Chai Mondays. I, loved, loved, LOVED it! I've tried chai teas in many different tea/coffee shops... and so far, the ones I've been served at Camellia Sinensis are awesome. Just the right amount of sweet (in my opinion) and very flavourful. The waitress I've had, during my 3 visits, was incredibly sweet and soft-spoken (the guy at the cash, on the other hand, was a little rigid/cold). The ambiance is calm and cozy. At first, I was a little intimidated and felt out of place due to the atmosphere reminding me of a library (it's incredibly quiet and a little sign on each table tells the customer to turn off/silence their phones or any other electronic device). Oh, and the fact that you "call" your waiter/waitress with the use of a little bell, made me more than a little uncomfortable. But if you can get over that and/or none of this bothers you (and actually sounds appealing) it's a really quaint tea shop to go to. These people take tea very, very seriously. I recall hanging out at Camellia Sinensis 15 years ago when they served tea and shisha and were a dimly it den of smoke and hushed conversations. About 13 years ago they made an announcement that they were dropping shisha from their menu and focusing solely on tea because they really wanted to take it to the next level. Well, let me tell you, they have certainly been true to their word! Their extensive menu of finely selected imported teas is beyond compare. No other tea house in montreal holds a candle to their knowledge on, or the quality of, their product. You can buy the tea en vrac at the boutique, or relax in the tea room to enjoy tea prepared on the spot. The servers are soft spoken and polite and are trained in the exact art of how to steep each tea perfectly according to its variety. Your tea is served in a variety of fashions, according to the customer's preference and/or the traditions and norms associated with each variety. The pots and cups (as well as all over service items) are beautiful and well kept, adding to the experience of the tea as a special and ceremonial thing. The ambience is minimalist, clean and sort of meditative (in a non-religious sense). But I must say, some of their seating isn't very comfortable. Now, be aware, this is not a bustling coffee shop where you can have raucous conversations with a group of your girlfriends nor is it the place to pull out a laptop and tap away all afternoon. In fact, Camelia Sinensis has posted signs explicitly asking you to not do these things. The signs are gently worded, but essentially they request that the tea room be a "technology free zone" where people can take a break from the hustle of the regular world to truly enjoy their tea and the company of others or perhaps a book or even just quietly sitting in silence. They have also installed a gong which they sound if the volume of talk in the cafe gets too loud. It is a polite signal to everyone in the tea room to adjust their communal volume back to a lower level. So yeah, this is obviously not everyone's cup of tea (sorry for the pun, but I had to!). If you are not into the minimalist or the subdued, perhaps this isn't the place for you. Personally, I can't go here too regularly. But, if kept as a special place, this is one of my most beloved spots in mtl, It is a paradise for special occasions shared with myself or 1 other person with whom I want to engage without the interferance of cell phones on the table, beckoning every 30 seconds. This place is wonderful... one of my favorite places in Montreal for sure! Both the teahouse and the boutique are heaven for tea lovers. The teahouse has a peaceful, intimate atmosphere with gentle lighting, a lot of wood and natural materials, and Asian-influenced decor. This is not a fast-paced, grab a cup and run type of shop, it's a place to take a pause from your day, slow down and savor a delicious tea. The tea selection is amazing, offering a wide range of options, black, green, chai, matcha, whatever your preference. With some teas you have a choice of how it's served, e.g., gaiwan or teapot. The staff are wonderfully knowledgeable and helpful. Of course the tea is top-quality. I strongly recommend browsing the boutique as well. They have an incredible selection of teas from Chinese pu-erh to Japanese green, a lovely selection of teaware, books, and gifts. Like I said, heaven for tea lovers! I'm surprised this lovely establishment hasn't been reviewed before. This is a little heaven for serious tea lovers. The menu is unique. Teas are served in different styles of brewing, many of them you do yourself at your table, using beautiful pots and cups with guidance from the pleasant and expert staff. The interior is very calming, with an Asian theme. There are tables and cozy booths. I was delighted to be sat in the latter, which was private and comfortable for a several hour long stay. Small sweet treats are also available. We had a plate of 3 macarons that were fantastic. Noteworthy- little placards on the tables state that it is a no tech zone. The staff clearly cultivate an ambiance of zen-like serenity, so no cell phone chatting. All the more reason to come visit and enjoy a peaceful pot of tea. read more

This place is truly as good as it gets. It should go without saying that the tea they serve is superior and expertly made.
