A patron mentioned this theater had the best Dolby sound system in Northern California. Watched " Conclave" here which was excellent. I never have seen these seats whereby two people could sit in them. They're like love seats. Also you can bring our own popcorn into the theater for $4. That's a hoot! Love the ambiance and films shown but 2x now their popcorn bag has leaked butter onto my pants. This most recent time, my pants are ruined with oil circle stains ALL over the thigh area. This has Never happened in any other theatre in my life but they seem to use oil versus real butter so maybe this is the issue? Maybe they put the oil in the bag first before the popcorn? So close to "GREAT," but just "GOOD" because of a few key issues. The Mad Fritz beer may be local, it is usually OK, but $15!?!?!? What a joke. The extreme expense for a little fermented cereal must slow its sales because I got a few beers here a few months apart and they tasted like mildew/ algae. I have tried thousands of beers, and I found this to be a unique problem. Both times, I notified the staff which has either drunk the KoolAid or are ignorant. They condescendingly lectured me about the high quality of Mad Fritz. I replied "perhaps, but this keg is bad or the lines are dirty." $45 + tip down the drain. Haven't had one since. So, Mad Fritz must have donated to the Cameo or something, can't figure out their death grip on the placement. QC needed. The wines... they serve some of the cheapest, most pedestrian wines around! WTF!? Usually California AVA, probably $5-8 a bottle wholesale. The white they had was love in a canoe. For those of you not in the wine biz, that means f'ing close to water. Right in the middle if Napa Valley! Appalling. Maybe someone paid for these placements too- I will research and see if from under one corporate umbrella. Then, the patrons. OMG. A crypt. For the latest few Star Wars installments, when key characters appear, like C3PO, Yoda, Leah, Hans Solo, etc., there were crickets! Nothing! At the Napa theatre, the patrons would erupt in cheer and applause for these legends. Yes, I saw the same movies in both theaters just nights apart. Wayyyy different experience. Don't people go to the theatre for the experience? Why be comatose? Does Saint Helena need cheer leaders in the theatre? Cue cards? Pep talks? There were some giggles in Knives Out, but muffled and nervous little ones. Finally, yeah, it is clean, the sound and picture are great, the seats are comfortable. The restrooms are great. They cooperate with local schools and orgs. Right on. 3.8 star rating, I can not conscionably round it up to 4 stars with the gouging beverage selections made available to patrons. Easy fixes. I hope to see them. Heck, do quarterly wine features with a 30 second ad during previews... Partner with local wineries to get some quality offerings. Just an idea. read more

Charming little theater, kind of reminds of Throckmorton in Mill Valley...same kind of charm. This one was love at first sight (or bite) when I saw Fiorello's gelato sold here! Somebody has good taste =) Hubby and I had lunch at Cindy's Backstreet Kitchen and took a stroll on Main Street. We saw the showtimes for Mission Impossible and thought "perfect day date"! I love the idea of BYOB (bring your own bowl) of popcorn for a discount. The comfy love seats makes it enjoyable and romantic. I didn't have to worry about missing part of the film when going to the restroom, as the sound system was amazing and plays in the restrooms. I totaly did not expect that LOL. I hope this uniquely classic theater sticks around for decades to come! read more

This theater in wifey's hometown has a nice old-school charm to it. We like to catch a flick here any time we are in the area. Prices are very reasonable, and it seats probably no more than a hundred people. for couples, they have the cool loveseat type chairs. The picture and sound here are just as good as the newer mega theaters and its great that this theater has stood the test of time and adds character to the little town of St. Helena...ALOHA!!! My boyfriend surprised me with a movie date. I thought when we left our home in Carneros that we'd be going to the large multi screen theater in Napa like we normally do but he surprised me with lunch in St. Helena and then a matinee at Cameo Cinema! Built 1913, the theater is the oldest continuously run single screen theater in California. I loved the art deco decor and the "love seats" made for two persons. You can also bring your own bucket or bowl from home for popcorn. And being located in Napa Valley they also serve wine, not the greatest wine but it is available. Despite being an old theater, the sound system is up to date and sounds as good as the big chain theaters. If you are looking for a unique experience for a movie date, the Cameo Cinema is perfect for that. And being located on the main road (Hwy 29) in St. Helena there are many options for dining before or after the movie. Only drawback is there only one screen which makes the movie choices limited to what is playing at that time but for me the experience was as good as the movie we saw. read more

The Cameo is what going to a movie should be like - and what I guess it is like on a random Monday, in a town as small as St. Helena, where even though there are lots of tourists - the folks who go see a movie on a Monday night are likely longtime locals. We're in Napa Valley, so of course there is good wine to be had by ordering at the bar, and if doing so supports the theatre, then I'm definitely all in for that on so many levels. We came to see Rocketman, which relies so heavily on sound, I wasn't sure if this little theatre could deliver. But they must have seriously upgraded their capabilities over the years, because this sound and picture quality were absolutely fantastic. As an avid film goer and film festival attendee, I've been in some small, historic art house theatres all over the country, but I can't remember ever seeing something that was so meant for the big screen, with technology that delivered the film like this! It was amazing. I also loved that many of the people in the audience seemed to know each other and were pleasantly chatting before and after the film. It makes me want to retire here even more than I already do! read more

Attended a Napa Valley Film Festival screening with a meet & greet and a cocktail party afterwards. The wine country glitterati were out. Group of 125 folks dressed well and out for an evening of fun & networking. The theater: Small, maybe 140 seats. Old, like the longest running single screen movie house in the USA (102 years as of 2015). But the auditorium, Wow! It's not that visually impressive it's rather plain, but the projection system and the latest Dolby sound system was incredible. The pre-movie 20 second Dolby demonstration was the best I've heard in any cinema big or small. If you're vacationing in the upper Napa valley and want to see a movie, you'll like this intimate theater. If you live in St. Helena be proud that you have a 1st class movie house. read more

We drive over an hour to get to this theater for an escape into the world of movies. Unfortunately, the real-world intruded with a high-budget political ad which preceded "The Bookshop" screening recently. Whether or not this was a paid ad, I do not appreciate political ideology which I oppose (and which the management of this theater obviously approves of), interfere with my entertainment experience. This intrusion was doubly offensive because the ad kept trying to use the "F" word, but the reveal was that the word was "Flip", as in flip the House and Senate. Despicable. This cute old (102 years, the old oldest continuous operating Single Screen Theater in the country!) theater is a great mix between charming (comfortable velvet seats, including comfy love seats for two), and high tech (digital projection with all-around Dolby Atmos sound). The snack bar serves favorites, along with Napa-valley quality specialties. One tip--there's no bottled water here, but they will give you free paper cups with water. This is my favorite theater! It's family owned and they have preserved the essence of 'old world' theater with comfy seats, one large theater room, and select showings at different times. Cameo Cinema is such a classic, rustic theater located in the heart of downtown St. Helena. This theater takes you back in time and it's one of the oldest single-screen theaters in the U.S. Between the large antique mirrors displayed along the walls accompanied by larger movie posters that showcase some of the classics in film and the ceilings of ornamental pressed steel, it's just the start of the Cameo ambience. Toss in the fact that the seats are red velvet and showcase multiple love seats towards the back of the theater will make you want to stay here regardless of what film you're about to see. Add in the traditional concession stand that includes: a classic popcorn maker, freshly made coffee on the spot, a variety of candies by the bar and/or box, Annie the Baker Cookies, Model Bakery goodies and an assortment of beverages. A chalkboard above the cashier will provide you with prices of all these lovely treats. If you bring in your own bowl the concession stand only charges you $3 to fill it (equivalent to their large popcorn price). You will also be purchasing your movie theater tickets at the concession stand. VERY affordable. For a matinee it's $6 a person, general admission is $10 a person, family film series $5 and if you're a student/senior/military/child (under 12) are $8. The Cinema now offers both 35mm film projection and Digital Cinema with Dolby 3-D capabilities. GREAT quality. The Cameo only shows up to three or four films a day. It depends but they do have their website at www.cameocinema.com and will provide you a calendar of show times, prices, movie information, etc. Popular movies can accumulate quite the crowd so plan accordingly, especially during the weekends. The Cameo is on the smaller scale compared to modern theaters, it will fill quickly. Since the Cameo is conveniently located in the heart of downtown St. Helena you can easily grab a bite to eat before or after your movie. There are tons of boutiques to look through as well. The Cameo is simply the icing on the cake when it comes to your St. Helena adventure. I highly recommend any one and every one to experience what the Cameo has to offer. I recently attended a Napa Valley Film Festival screening of "Woman in Gold" at the Cameo Cinema. It opened in May 1913 and is the oldest single screen theater in the country. It is very cozy and nostalgic. It reminds me of the theater I grew up attending when I was a child. Except for the fact that since 2009, digital sound and projection plus Dolby sound have been added to offer a world class movie experience. The concession stand offers snacks and delicious popcorn. You can even BYO bowl and not only save trash from going into the landfill but also receive a discount on your purchase! It is such a refreshing experience compared to the massive multiplexes that have invaded our country. Though it was my first visit, it certainly won't be my last. It is also located in St. Helena which is one of the most beautiful towns in Napa Valley. Lights, camera...action! read more

The Cameo is such a gem! A few years back, the future of the cameo was uncertain... then Cathy Buck and Shawn LaRue purchased it and brought new life into a historical treasure! The cameo has just one screen, and maybe fifty seats (including love seats (for two) in the back) and features just one or two films at a time, but they are always significant pieces absolutely worth watching! Either Cathy or Shawn are nearly always in the theater to welcome guests, introduce the audience to the feature film, and promote upcoming events. These events always give back to the community. They provide free matinees for the kids at Christmas time and to the community on other occasions or for fund raising events (individuals/businesses can also rent out the theater for private events). In addition, they collaborate with local businesses to create events for special films or features. For example, when second Sex & the City film was released, Charbay (a local distillery) came to serve cosmos; for the film Eat, Pray, Love an Indian restaurant from Napa provided attendees with samosas and other appetizers. Another time, Meadowood Chef Christopher Kostow challenged Iron Chef Cat Cora and the Cameo invited Christopher and the community to watch the completion as he conquered the secret ingredient: oatmeal! Cameo Cinema is one of the best small local theater you'll find. They play a lot of indie movies but also the mainstream movies as well. I saw the Mission Impossible movie on opening weekend at the Cameo which I was quite pleased. Cameo has a friendly owner who cares about her business and customers. In my opinion, this is a St. Helena landmark, hands down. Besides being historic and charming, the quality of it's sound and screen is excellent. Not to mention the people who run it are passionate about both cinema and their community. I've seen the premier screening of a local band's music video there, along with film projects created by local students. They also have a fun selection of films, throwing in some classics with the new releases. Check the show times, because I don't think they screen movies throughout the day as larger theater are wont to do. read more

If you love film as much as I do, you know that independently-owned, non-chain theaters that pop their own popcorn and serve it with real butter is rare -- and an indication of the quality experience you're about to enjoy. All too often, 100 year old neighborhood theaters that are still in operation end up being a shabby holdout to its earlier glory days. No so at the Cameo! It's impeccably clean and free of the old, musty smell I usually associate with old movie theaters. And talk about charming -- at 140 seats (I looked it up) it definitely has that small-town feel. But the local couple who've taken it over have invested in quality projection (both 35mm and digital projection) and sound. And we're not talking about 140 seats in a cramped cineplex shoebox configuration. The Cameo is spacious, includes 18 couples/loveseats, and has a perfect size screen. With regards to programming, the Cameo has a great mix of first-run films, art films, ballet/opera/theater screenings, and revivals. Most play for a few days before a switch in the program, and I love that because it means that I can go to the Cameo a couple of times a week and always see something new or different. Oh, and get this... it's the Napa Valley, so it's no surprise that the Cameo doesn't mind if locals often bring in bottles of wine to drink during the movie! The Cameo does neighborhood-movie-theater right, and if I were to ever open my own place, I'd probably model it after the Cameo. read more

This is a sweet little movie theater. Seats about 140 people and has the most amazing sound quality. Dolby Atmos I think it is called. Speakers everywhere (walls, ceiling...) There are even theater style love seats, so it is perfect to cuddle for date night. You might think it is silly to go to the movies on a wine tasting trip to the Napa Valley, but you'd be wrong. read more

Adorable movie theater downtown St. Helena that is almost 100 years old! They usually play 1 movie at a time but some days they do double features (art film series, family film series...) and even live performances. The staff is always beyond friendly. They greet you when you come in, introduce the movie and bid you farewell when you leave. They seem to have a regular crowd and know them by name. Matinee is only $6 and regular price is $9 ( Senior, Student and Military discounts too). The Food is reasonably priced especially for a movie theater. The bathrooms are always clean and well taken care of. The theater inside is very nice and the last few rows are all love seats (perfect for cuddling)! They had it super decorated for Halloween and was fun to look at while we waited for the movie. We love this theater and its super convenient for great dining after wards! read more

It's doesn't get anymore charming than this place!! I almost don't want to get the word out, because I want this place all to myself. The screen, and sound are FANTASTIC and top of the line. There's even love seats toward the back of the theater, how romantic! Napa is building a mega theater opening soon, but I only go to Cameo. If you absolutely love going to the movies, this theater makes it an experience. You'll be telling everyone about it! This would make a great date destination. The drive into St. Helena is gorgeous, the street is great to roam while you wait for your show time, and the restaurants surrounding are phenomenal! Make a day out of it! read more

A local theater is a great asset to St. Helena. The loveseats are really cool. Cathy has putt a lot of energy into the theater, and it shows. How nice to be greeted by the owner and her enthusiasm is way cool. She has gone to great lengths to get good films; ticket prices are reasonable; and there are special events for charities too. I am a fan of this theater, and will continue to support it in the future. If there were six stars, I would give them to the Cameo. read more

I'm a movie lover and I love Cameo Cinema! It's an old school theater than can get very crowded and has huge support from the local community. The sound and projection is better than I thought it would be and the staff is friendly. It's a good, homey spot to catch a film. Came here for a preview screening event "Woman in Gold" at this oldest continuous running Single Screen Theater in the country, now 102-year-old. While the theater does project the sense of time, the hardwares are solid, the seats are large and the velvety cushions are darn comfortable with that freshly brewed coffee and popcorn for pure entertainment powered by Dolby Atmos sound system. This gem in the heart of St Helena offers movies on regular days at affordable prices under $10 depending on the nights, the old but elegant wall mirrors juxtaposed next to the large movie posters do take you back in time a little bit. Very cool little theater. A memorable, historical theater. Cozy, great space inside; has lots of character, charm, and class. The only drawback and the reason I deduct one star is that it is one screen only, so you don't always get to see what you want, and the movies rotate through pretty quickly (about a week for each one, sometimes only a day or two for the kids' selections.) The Cameo Cinema is such a great theater. The staff is all very friendly, and they show movies that don't often make it out to the larger theater in Napa. They have comfy love seats, and a great selection of snacks. My favorite there is to get a cup of coffee (they brew it to order), and a chocolate chip/toffee cookie which makes my inner fat kid very happy :) I am so happy that my community has a theater like this, unlike all the other mega-plex theaters in the bay area. read more

This is a real gem of a movie theatre! Small, intimate, comfortable and a part of the downtown scene of Saint Helena. My understanding is that it is the oldest one room theatre in California. There are single seats and love seats for two. The theatre itself is old but the sound system is new and spectacular. Because of its size and ambiance, it is easy to start a conversation with those around you prior to the start of the movie. They have interesting snack choices that are fresh and locally made. You may bring your own container to fill up with their buttery popcorn. Let's hope that the Cameo stays open for many more years! read more

Very charming and intimate movie theater. Has an old classic feel to it. Get there early to get a good seat as it can fill up quickly. My boyfriend and I went on a Monday night so parking was fine. Two movie tickets + iced tea + small popcorn (which was big enough to share) = $28.50. Reasonably priced. Everyone should check it out! Have to support your local businesses. read more
