Since our scout leader actually made the reservations and put everything together, all we had to do was pay for each family member, fill out health forms, and have our temperature taken at the check-in tent at the entrance (COVID guidelines). When we got to our camp area (12), we were able to drive our car to the camp area, drop off our camping things, and park in the parking lot. The camping area was great. Leaves were everywhere, but we had a rake to clear our area for pitching the tent. We actually had an outlet for electricity which was a blessing! We used it to fill our airbed! We were next to the latrine and a long sink with running water and lots of soap! There was a firepit available. During the weekend, we were able to hike to the shore of James River and collect lots of shells. We walked to the obstacle course and ball pit. There was a Trading Post mini store where they sell essentials we might have forgotten. They also had a dining hall for what I believe was for their campers in the summer. This place is awesome! I would definitely recommend families to come here!!

I was hopeful that the nostalgic…read morelook of the camp would lead to an experience similar to my childhood but this is the most disorganized mess I've ever had the pleasure of participating in, although the condition of their tents brought back memories because they are likely from the same time period and salvaged with duct tape. I don't see the point in having an agenda as it has been shortened multiple times already and it's the first afternoon. 95 degrees out and the only thing these kids really want to do is swim and play in the lake. Check in at 9am and swim checks til 11am (oh wait, that's right, they postponed that until late in the afternoon when storms were called for. That makes a lot of sense right? So now here we are and instead of being able to cool off, my child is playing with blocks. Events were scheduled through 5pm on Sunday but now I've heard that after lunch (12 noon) your essentially on your own and free to leave. So we start late, miss out on the events we actually wanted to do, and end early...next time I'll save the money and the headaches.

The camp counselors welcome them in like a cheering squad, and get them settled into their cabins first, so they can meet all their bunk mates. The itinerary for the week is very busy, they are up early, with a healthy breakfast to get them going, and they are out to the beach or the pool for their morning, then to lunch and some down time before they start the afternoon activities. Each meal they are allowed to sing and chant and stand on their seats just like in the movies, and they are allowed to BE KIDS... Then they are off to the afternoon activities which are land or dry stuff, archery, arts & crafts, skate boarding, hockey, and then off to dinner. Every night the counselors went through each cabin and got reports and sent us emails and pictures daily. We were able to email them daily and they would print the emails out and have them at their table daily for lunch. When we picked them up for the closing ceremonies, our little girl had made so many friends, and she didn't seem to miss us at all... she had a blast! Every kid gets an award at the end. It helps build friendships, fun, and lets them be kids. We will let our kids go back every chance they get!

We were given a rundown on the activities for her for the week and took a quick tour of the camp. All in all, very nice. When we picked her up she was so happy. She had the best time! She told us about swimming and boating and time at the beach. They have a skate park inside and they played basketball and just did a lot of outdoor activities. The one thing we were warned about when we picked her up was ticks. They said they have plenty of ticks since it is in the woods. After this experience I would not hesitate to send my daughter back to camp her and would love to send my son. I think he would have a blast! I wish I went to a camp like this when I was a kid... I didn't even get to go to camp.

Since it is only about 20 miles from the bridge tunnel up the shore (one of my favorite places on earth!), we decided to check it out. SO glad we did! And since admission is free, it made the bridge tunnel toll worth it! When you walk in you are greeted by the most friendly docent who gives you a brief background of the museum and what it's about. She told us they have several films and asked if we wanted to watch any of them. We did - "Our Island Home" gives you a terrific view of what life on Hog Island was like before it was abandoned from people who were actually born there. After whatever movie(s) you want to watch, you are "free range" to explore the museum. It is SO well done. I could have roamed around for longer than the 2 hours we were there (but I'm a museum reader - I have to check out everything!). Definitely allow yourself a couple of hours to explore. The exhibits are fantastic and laid out well. All artifacts were donated or on loan from actual island families - they don't purchase their artifacts. I like that. Shows the love for the community that these people have. Definitely check out the attic! There are hands on things for the kids - it's hot up there in the summer though! I was fascinated by the twisted chimney (not going to tell you why it was built that way - you'll have to go find out for yourself!). This is a GREAT little stop if you are looking for something cool to do on your way up or down Rt. 13 on your way to your vacation or a great day trip from the VA Beach area. With all their many activities and programs, we will definitely be back!

Each class is very affordable! The studio is in a strip mall on Warwick Blvd near Yates Elementary. It is a bright space with a variety of art supplies available to purchase for children, and a bright, colorful creating space with tables and stools. Some little kids fall off the stools but there are chairs available if desired. Ms Karen is the owner and she is delightful. She is very friendly and accommodating, but not overly so. The studio offers classes for children as young as 18 months, and as there is a wide variety of personalities and abilities, some children take awhile to get comfortable and some take to the structure right away. However there is no judgement or pressure for any child who may be having a melt down, and some do, or children who want to put project elements on upside down, or children who would rather sit on the floor or visit the caged birds that live at the studio. Some projects are very difficult for the younger children, but the age range for the classes my granddaughter attends is 18 months to 6 years, so there is quite a bit of adult involvement with the much younger children. The somewhat older children can attend on their own and parents can come back for them. Most projects have messy elements, and one of their "rules" is to have fun and get messy. Child height hand washing sinks are located close by, thankfully! I found a couple of projects too messy for my liking, but then, I'm about 60 years older than the kids the projects are designed for! As with any new business there are learning curves for the instructors who are likely getting all the elements together for a project they have never taught before. However the instructors generally are very hands off and let the children do what they feel comfortable doing while providing everything for a finished project. I look forward to supporting this business for several years to come, as long as my granddaughter is enjoying it.
