The facilities are clean and they have many different rental options available. I planned a womens getaway for no reason other than to just get away. No kids. No men. No schedule. It was awesome! Camp Idlewild was the perfect destination. Inexpensive and AWESOME! Laying out in the field to star gaze in the middle of the night is my favorite. You can't get that view in Hampton Roads for sure! If you are looking for a place to hold a retreat of any kind, or just a day event, this is the place!

This was focused on water sports, so she spent a lot of time on the James River stand-up paddle boarding, kayaking and swimming (in the pool). They even did archery, campfires, sang songs, learned to make bracelets, play games and much more! My daughter even loved the food. It was great that they even allowed her to bring green juices + probiotics (that needed refrigeration), so she could consume daily! This is part of her daily healthy regimen and I am so glad they were thoughtful enough to allow this. She came home with a lot of stories + journal entries! I was excited to read and listen to all of the camp experiences! Of course she's already excited for the opportunity to attend next year!

I was only nine years old when I paid my first visit to Eastover with my church and family. This is…read morea retreat center that offers its services to other churches or church gatherings such as men's and women's retreat, youth camping, church camping, or group conferences. Since my first visit, I've gone here almost annually or biannually especially when I was a teenager. I'd come here early in the summer for our Church's annual family camp and in the middle of the summer for Youth Camp when I was part of a youth group during High School. The last time I paid a visit here was nearly two weeks ago. I stayed here with the rest of my mom's church from Wednesday to Saturday. Like the rest of the church, we stayed in the "hotel" lodging area that's connected to the chapel. I've camped near the river once and stayed in the cabins a few times but their rooms are really nice. The water flow is constantly strong, there is always hot water, and the AC is strong as well. There's a gym area and pool near by but since this place is a retreat area open to multiple churches and community groups, it is customary for all groups to schedule the time they want to use the pool or gym. The church I went to cooked their own food in the chapel/communal room but I know that there's a cafeteria near by. There aren't refrigerators in the individual rooms so bring a cooler if you have to bring your own food. Rates depend on group and where you are staying (camp ground/hotel room/cabin) There are hiking trails too and plenty of room to do group activities. This camping facility is very clean and I think there's a reason why my parent's church keep coming back here yearly. Service is nonexistent here for most so keep that in mind. It's accessible because it's only an hour and a half away from the Hampton roads area (where I live) but whenever I'm here, I feel like I'm far away from everything.

Tom was our guide, Hailey, was the other rafts guide, and both were awesome. Tom knew so much about the area history and is very experienced guiding. Such an easy trip to make with fun rapids (III's and sometimes IV's). I'm sure all the guides are great, but we will ask for Tom and Hailey first next trip. Pretty impressed with this outfit. (Wish they had more merch to purchase though, just imo).

I was nervous about sending my kids to surf camp since they are the youngest allowed age to…read moreparticipate, but they had a blast and asked to do it again. I was nervous about the 1:4 ratio, but since they were on the younger end, it was mostly a 1:2 or 1:3 ratio for them. I had visions of them being pulled under a wave and being traumatized by the ocean forever, and it's true they did get hit by the board a few times, but the instructors were so positive that the kids didn't mind much, kind of like how falling is a fact of life when you're learning to walk (but we don't tell kids not to learn to walk). I learned a thing or two too - instead of reaching to a bad wipeout with "Are you ok??", I can try saying "Sick wipeout dude!" :) The one thing I would note is to pay attention to the tides - I think the camps are better at low tide.

I have to leave my mini me at home, or she would spend every dime in here. One tip about the Girl Scout shop is ... include a small dressing room. I love "A Place for Girls" and the setup of the outdoors areas. They are so many pavilion areas, and widely covered by trees too. The classes and event offered here are amazing, I just really wish there was something. Similar in Norfolk. It took me an hour to get to this location from the VA Beach Oceana area.

Ever notice fencing clubs are always in the shadiest parts of town and you are worried about…read moreparking in a tow zone? Richmond Fencing Club suffers from the same issue. However, once you are inside you will forget that. I was here for their annual Hangover Classic event in January, so I can't speak for the coaches or the general membership of the club. However, I do know several fencers from this club who seem generally happy with the quality. There are a good number of strips, plenty of space to put down your gear and warm up. I didn't like the noise that the strips (metal mesh) made and I found it hard to focus on them - but that is a personal issue with sensory stuff. Overall, a good club to attend an event at.

Fencing has taught my daughter strategic thinking, a healthy competitive nature, sportsmanship and most of all to have fun. i can not recommend this club high enough.
