Dropping him off for his 2nd year at camp!
Dianna A.

This is the 2nd year my son attends this camp and I'm so glad that I've been able to send him. The camp is located in a beautiful setting and absolutely no cell phone service. As a mom, I love you be fact that he will be disconnected from electronics. This year when I dropped him off, one of the counselors recognized him and welcomed him back. That alone made my son feel at ease and immediately reminded him of all the fun activities he did last year. I really recommend packing extra bug spray, sunscreen and hiking shoes. I'm excited to pick him up tomorrow and hear about all of the fun memories he made.

as a kid growing up an only child my parents needed some time to themselves so off to summer camp i would go! i went to this camp for 2 summers and it was frigging awesome. a cabin full of boys for 3 weeks and the great outdoors, oh my! arts and crafts polar bear club sleeping outdoors waking up with ants everywhere the mess hall parents giving you money for the snack shack and saving the rest for after camp:) horseback riding panty raids camp songs hikes along the river too many memories to list! all in all this is a great place if you want to experience summer camp. every child needs to experience it at least once and camp loma mar is the best place in the bay area. my last year at camp was in the mid 80's and it was myself in a cabin with 7 black kids and it changed me in a good way. as i received my care box of archie comics and cookies from mom run dmc's RAISING HELL had just come out and was blasted constantly. listening to this day after day made me more a a man and i got rid of the comics and grew a huge pair! the friends you meet at camp loma mar cannot be beat and to this day i still run into someone i met there and the memories are never ending.

When we arrived to check him in, he was placed into the last cabin available, which consisted of 15 other 5th through 8th graders who all treated him like bullsh!t because of his encopresis and hearing loss. In particular, one guy who came in THE DAY AFTER CAMP STARTED and chose one of FOUR bunk beds available, which just so happened to be the one right under my son's! He started berating my son about how messy he is, and it got to the point where the cabin's counselor had to intervene, and not only that, he discovered my son's encopresis, which he hasn't directly mentioned to any student at this point. They decided that it was emotionally too much for my son, and that I would pick him up halfway through the camp. Not to mention, all students were required to take choir ALONGSIDE the instrument they played, which for my son, who is very shy about his voice, was WAAAAY too much. The choir director was also the lead counselor, the WORST person in the entire camp! She never even mentioned this, but apparently, you are supposed to arrive 10 minutes early to every meal, which his cabin failed to do because she never even mentioned it! As a result, his cabin would arrive 15 minutes before each meal, and he did not do anything wrong! Unacceptable. We won't be coming back. Just a side note, this review is for a program (La Honda Music Camp) that was hosted at this location, not the site itself. This is because apparently, it's so little known that there is nothing on Yelp about it.

The room my husband and I stayed in was very warm, but some other rooms seemed to have heating issues. There's not really much of an open space there to see scenery, but you are pretty much in the middle of the redwoods so that is pretty cool. The meals they served were also quite filling, as they were always buffet style. One day, many of us went to walk around the hiking trails during the afternoon. I wish the hiking trails were more marked, as many of us got lost among them during the day since a fire road would often run through the trails. Something I have to give a huge shout out to the staff there thought was really helping our group out during an emergency situation. All that to say, I give a 4 star rating to this campground site. I don't live far from the area and so was pleasantly surprised to discover that this campground was deep in nature not too far from me. I can't say much on the value as I was not the one who booked this conference (I booked it through my church for the retreat), but even following our registration costs, it felt nice to be pay the amount we did for a weekend in the Siden building. Of course this being 2024, PCR tests are not readily available and required a one hour drive. Needless to say I picked up my daughter and was called a "Karen" by the director who didn't want to be called out on his punitive, unnecessary covid policies while he tried to convince us that these were Santa Cruz county policies - lies. We never recovered our lost tuition and I doubt my daughter will ever recover emotionally from being locked in an office overnight without being able to call her parents, without her contact lenses or any actual food. And the kicker was she never had Covid. Avoid this camp!

I…read morealmost never use Yelp anymore to search for anything (sorry, yelp!) but I came on here just to see if there was any SAT prep service that could help my son. He had already sat for the SAT in his 10th grade, and had a decent 1550 score, but we wanted to see if he could improve it. Mr. Test Prep's approach and clear value proposition really stood out to me in the sea of the multitude of tutors and SAT prep services. We gave it a try, our son Ethan loved Michael's style, and format, and it was a good fit for our family's needs all around. Ethan sat for the SAT again in a few months of working with Michael, and his score was perfect. Of course, everyone's mileage may vary. For us , it was a match made in heaven :) Thanks, Michael

My son (who actually does well with online learning) did the trial and felt he could do better on his own. I eventually got someone who did in person tutoring. In my experience, a lot of these online classes and tutors benefit the tutor but not the students. If you have a student who does well with online teaching, maybe this is okay. But if you want to pay big money, make sure you get results. For our family, the benefit of taking the SAT over and over was good. But not having any human interaction with the tutor or peers was not good. My son eventually scored a 1570 but with an in person tutor and taking the SAT five times.
