    The Toyon cabin

    I want to retell my outdoor Ed experience I stayed in a cabin with bugs with was LIVE OAK. I saw the other cabin TOYON with was a house It was shocking. My showers were extremely small I could barely fit. I couldn't move at all my water wasn't hot there were cracks on the floor paint ripped off the floor while the TOYON cabin had luxury shower that were nicer than some hotel showers I have seen In RENO they didn't even need there showers shoes. I know this all because my friend was in the other cabin. My cabin leader was a girl with was extremely weird since we were all boys she constantly told us to SHUT UP even though we're children she should have been fired for telling us that. We were completely forgotten by the staff who kept forgetting our cabin name. They sang bad songs. In short I had a bad time.

    Closing song. ::tear::

    This place is the best! I went here as a kid when I was in 5th grade for the week away from home. You stay in cabins, have a high school cabin leader, and a naturalist that takes you on numerous adventures. It has an awesomely rigid schedule so you're never bored. Breakfast starts on time, you take turns setting up, cleaning up, and learn about all types of recycling so that you have no waste (forget all their terminology). You go on a night hike to learn about constellations, trust walk, more hikes, learn about the estuary habit the day before a beach day, and more that I can't think of. I also went here as a teacher chaperone for 6th graders at Taylor Middle School this past year. I think they could appreciate it just as much or more at that age. Any older and it's not as valuable. In the day in age when there's so much media like TV, computers, iPhone, etc. this really brings back the core values of respect for nature, each other, and yourself. And of course, self-responsibility. Every kid should go on this trip as part of their schooling and I feel sorry for private schools that must go elsewhere. Of course, you have to kiss a banana slug and Solar Steve is the MAN who runs this place.

    Does anyone know if they have a parking lot big enough to accomodate a small RV camper (23 feet)? Thanks all. Sounds great.

The staff member told me that would be fine as long as we completed the waivers in advance, which we did. We arrived within those 5 minutes, but she was busy with another customer, so we waited a few minutes for her to acknowledge us. Instead of checking us in, she stalled briefly and then told us we had missed the grace period and could not be checked in. This was extremely frustrating because we were physically there within the grace period. I even have map timeline data showing our exact arrival time. Had they not been short-staffed or delayed in assisting us, we would have made it onto the tour without any issue. To make matters worse, we were told that a manager would follow up the next day to reschedule us. That never happened. No call, no email, nothing. Overall, this was a very disappointing experience driven entirely by poor communication and lack of accountability. I would not recommend booking here based on how they handle customers when issues arise.

One of the highlights was the generous surprise of complimentary wine served by our host, which made the evening feel even more special. It's clear they truly care about creating a memorable experience for their guests. You grab the ingredients, you spread on the toppings with both arms, and you dance it all around. That is how we got warmed up to race. Parking, at 7:15 was fast and right across the street: $10 Packet pick-up: Easy cheesy. Porto potties: At least they had them, right? Bag check: Free! They have a security guard watching over them. Obstacles: An adult playground. There was a back-up at the first obstacle, as they wanted people to get into groups of 8. That wasn't working, so it was more like awkward waves. A large bouncy pad with about 6 semi-tall barriers you launch yourself over. It was surprisingly challenging. There were: Two elevated slip & slides into shallow pools of water. One was supposed to have foam but it wasn't pumping correctly. A huge swirling cross pad, you had to run with it or against it along a narrow platform. Inflated balls that you had to balance and jump across. I made it onto the first one and couldn't stand up to launch to the next, so I flung off the side and laughed as I bounced to the ground. An inner tube water slide into a pool of water. A leap of faith onto an inflated bulls eye. Two huge rotating balls that chased you, as you tried to run across a slippery plank. I almost made it but lost my footing on the last step, splooosh! Two large stair/rope climbs to slides. The last one will give you a wedge. We only waited a couple of minutes to take an optional finisher photo and they handed us our medals. I love the photo opportunities, you scan your bracelet before you get onto the obstacle and they snap a picture of you. Bouncy, bouncy,..fun, fun, fun, fun, fun.

    My 3rd year doing this and second at this location, safe to say I won't be doing it again…read more - ''Jump balls'' were not inflated properly. As soon as I stepped onto it I sunk so far I could feel the ground underneath my feet. I'm not exactly heavy either at 102lb. ''Jumping'' from one to the other was in no way possible nor an option. That's some lass ass bs excuse of an obstacle. Previous years this has been my favorite. - No foam on the ''Foam of Fury'', just water. Seriously?! - Not enough water on the ''Cool'' Running's''. Out of the 40 or so people that I saw tried to go down it they all had to get off and walk to the the end (where you are supposed to land in the pool) because friction had them stop. Myself included. Lame. - VIP entry I got my tech shirt upgrade but Hubs didn't. + You actually got a medal this year. + Vendors after the event handing out drinks. Neutral: You had a tag on your wristband which you swipe at obstacles to indicate you wanted your picture taken. I'm neutral on this because for the price of the registration fee I feel this should be included. My advice for the event organizers - Have the obstacles as advertised and either 1. reduce the price of registration (upwards of $65 plus fee's for a 5k is obscene) 2. Add more obstacles.

The room my husband and I stayed in was very warm, but some other rooms seemed to have heating issues. There's not really much of an open space there to see scenery, but you are pretty much in the middle of the redwoods so that is pretty cool. The meals they served were also quite filling, as they were always buffet style. One day, many of us went to walk around the hiking trails during the afternoon. I wish the hiking trails were more marked, as many of us got lost among them during the day since a fire road would often run through the trails. Something I have to give a huge shout out to the staff there thought was really helping our group out during an emergency situation. All that to say, I give a 4 star rating to this campground site. I don't live far from the area and so was pleasantly surprised to discover that this campground was deep in nature not too far from me. I can't say much on the value as I was not the one who booked this conference (I booked it through my church for the retreat), but even following our registration costs, it felt nice to be pay the amount we did for a weekend in the Siden building.
