We love this place but unfortunately, it has gone way downhill. The staff is very rude now. The prices have skyrocketed. What used to cost $20 is now costing me and my family $75 to enter for the day. I know a lot of people that come here that are refusing to come here because of the price alone. It seems like camp Tonkawa needs to be on the phone with their insurance because their insurance going up is forcing people to not come anymore. ( that's what they told me.) Side note- this place is not nearly as "crazy" as it used to be since the main tree over the water has fallen. The Volleyball Net has been down for a long time And families used to bring their small grills to cook for everybody out there for free. It was more welcoming, and I have watched it slowly turned into what it is now. Everything a gift from God and I wonder if the ownership realizes it's steady decline. It might be time to consider a change in ownership. read more

We all packed up today and headed to the natural spring at lake tonkawa. 2hr sdrive when we got there We were swimming having fun and enjoying our time when all of a sudden a fight started between teenage kids (none of the "owners on the golf cart watching everyone was around)..... now I understand kids can get mad and fight so we didn't think anything of it and everyone went back to minding their own business and spending time with their family. About an hour later the fight broke out again!! Remind you SAME kids!!! Out of no where we hear a gun shot and a truck peeled out of the parking lot and took off..... families scurry to get their kids and 90% of the people there started packing up and leaving.... well now 10 min after the fight and gunshot going off the "bosses" showed up and told everyone it was a pool noodle that hit the water yeah no it was a full blown gun shot that went off.. They got ugly with katie and the family that were trying make sure their kids were ok after the shot went off.... We were all told to go home and told the officer they never said it was a pool noodle that hit the water and people are just spreading rumors..... there were little ones crying and scared. Families were scared. Cops showed up because not only did people call the cops, but also the mother of the kids thst started the fight not once but twice called it on others saying it was their fault.... The office refuses to give the money back to families because it is non refundable for a SAFE place to swim at for families to come out and spend time with each other.... This was the first and only time we will ever be there..... not gonna be going back to this place for sure. On to the next place where we can feel safe!!! read more

Needed a stay for the night and found this place. This is heaven! Huge sites with full hook up. Settled in nature with deers and peacocks. Very quiet with wonderful hosts. Laundry and bathrooms available. Wifi was a bit skittish. read more

Beautiful park but absolutely unacceptable and erratic behavior by the owner. The lady up front is extremely nice, but her husband on the golf cart first accused us of not paying then told us we were not allowed to drive in the park after we made a loop looking for the side entrance to the spring since the main area was too crowded for my group. The owner called me a liar multiple times when I said that I did not know we were not allowed to drive through the park and stated that he would have me "thrown in jail" for being there (after we had paid to be there). No refund was given, even though we never made it out of our vehicle the whole 10 minutes we were there. As a business owner, Chamber member and native East Texan I know this is not the hospitality we are accustomed to and I apologize for anyone visiting our area that has experienced this same behavior from this park. read more

This place is actually a ton of fun, but the way they talked to my husband and I as we were trying to gather our things to leave was absolutely unacceptable. We were trying to finish up, and chose to smoke a cigarette before getting into our cars with our children for the drive home. It was 6:50. The guy was sitting there as we were loading everything up and I explained that to him. He told me "not his problem, you're making me mad, and you need to get out of here now." Mind you we were never causing trouble, followed all their rules, and were ready to come back with 6 kids tomorrow and pay another $80. We were also trying to let our kids change out of their wet swimsuits for the 30 minute drive home, but he didn't care. Instead he continued to harass us saying he was going to call the sheriff. Then called a second guy to come harass us too, in the less than 3 minutes that this conversation lasted. So we got in the cars and left. Then the 2nd guy hauled butt to the gate to cut us off and give us crap about going over 5 mph. We weren't hauling butt but maybe went up to 10mph max. Well excuse me sir, but you just told us to leave and made sure we knew to be out of the park by 7 pm. It was 6:55 when we drove out of the gate. We sat at the end of the road talking about it, and 7 more cars came out behind us. I saw several people with glass containers and using charcoal grills even after being told not to, and they all left behind us. That man treated us with absolute disrespect, and it's so unfortunate because we love the place, but I don't want him to have another dollar of my money. Wish he would've worried about the people that were actually breaking the rules rather than harassing us and our kids. read more

We would have loved to enjoy the campground and enjoy the facilities on Oct. 11th, 2019 however the "angry old man on a golf cart" as I see he is referred to in other posts but is known to us as Francis's husband threw us out before we got set up within minutes of our arrival. So if getting thrown our of a campground is on your bucket list, this is the place for you! My wife made our initial reservation after reading the website and calling their phone number. Francis wrote our name down and said we could pay when we came onsite. No hours of operation were mentioned on the phone and they do not exist on their site. If we had stuck with JUST this one call as our reservation we would have been in hot water with these folks for sure as we would have assumed all was well all the way until we arrived. I tend to be careful with reservations and prefer to be sure when it comes to my family and have confirmation rather than be penciled in so I suggesting calling back and seeing about paying. My wife tried to do that but apparently that was not something Francis could do over the phone. We called a total of 4 times to try to make sure we knew what to expect and firm up our reservations. In the end through a misunderstanding or miscommunication on their or our part we arrived just after 8pm after their allowed check in time of 7pm. We thought we had an understanding that we could pay in the morning but apparently we did not. We were even given site numbers to use that night A2 or A3. Given we had never been there how would we know those numbers unless they were told to us prior to arrival as those are indeed site numbers on premises? Our experience is usually with state and national parks so we are familiar with the notion of making arrangements, driving in after hours and going to the office in the morning to check in. At any rate "Mr. Golf cart" rolled up while my wife and I were standing outside of the vehicle inspecting the A2 site with flashlights to ensure we could pull in safely and their were no hazards or surprises. My wife who was wearing her head-lamp turned to face the direction she heard noise coming from as he rolled up. This had the affect of shining the light on him to which his initial greeting was a surly, angry and gruff yelling of "Get that light outa my eyes". I would say that his greeting and attitude were akin to an angry hornets nest and set the tone for our entire encounter with him. It all went downhill from there. We were informed that we could not just come on their campground and pick any site we pleased and that there was no admittance after 7. No really knowing who we were talking do as he never identified himself other than as Francis's husband later on, we tried to explain that we were not picking any site but using one of the two we were told to use and that we were under the understanding we could check in the next morning. We were told "no one told you that" and we were invited to leave and find some other place if we wanted to. This sour, surly, angry, unhappy man proceeded to berate us repeatedly and at a minimum 6 times accused us of not telling the truth (otherwise know as saying we were lying to him). I appreciate rules and why he had them as he explained them to us but as far as we were concerned we were doing what we were told we should do and never intended to violate the sanctity of his precious, all important rules. After this verbal tongue lashing and looking at my wife's face as she bit her lip for the sake of our children I stayed fairly quite until he said "Let me know if you have heard this before..." and continued with the fact that we were not allowed to enter after 7pm. I told him that we had heard that initially but that we were operating under an understanding we thought we had with Francis to which he again abruptly cut me off informing me that "NO ONE TOLD YOU THAT". After a few more words from him he settled down a bit and said he would "let us stay" and that he would have never placed us in the site we were in front of as he said he would have put us back by the bathroom given we had a popup camper. He said to follow him in his cart but he just couldn't leave it there. He gave us one final rebuke with "Now tell the truth, no one told you to come in here" and then repeated "just tell the truth". Having had enough of this man who clearly does not want to have to deal with people at all I turned and said in a very calm, even tone "Sir, I think that is uncalled for. I don't appreciate your repeatedly accusing my wife of lying" and had I been allowed to continue to speak I would have said that at best this was a miscommunication or misunderstanding as we would never have intentionally broken their rules but instead I was cut off by him again this time telling us to "Get out and don't come back here again".. So we did but not before I pointed out that with his attitude "It's a wonder your campground isn't full, sir." read more

Arrived after the office closed, only to be greeted by the new owners who saw me arrive. They escorted me to my site, helped me unhook, connected all my "things", etc, and knew what they were doing. What would have easily taken me 30 min took about five and I didn't have to go back and fix anything. The park is clean and well kept with lots of trails and a great fire pit. There are wild animals on site. Well, the deer that ate out of my hand wasn't too wild but the beautiful peacocks never came close. Be aware, peacocks cry out now and again. It didn't bother me but if you're the kind of camper that stays in your trailer and watches TV, it might be rather startling. The wifi is scarce, which helps to keep your phone addicted family connected to nature. It was too cold to swim in the springs but I will definitely be back! read more

Very popular - stupendous place to go for fun in the sun near Garrison. A VERY natural spring into a great swimming pond! Been around for years - many people from all over come to enjoy a day of swimming, picniking, volleyball or whatever you want to do. Clean water, rope swings, water is cold - around 55 degrees year around. $7/pp - ages 5+ - worth every cent. Can't wait to go back again. read more
