Lines were long, my daughter and her friend got in maybe 5 runs in an hour and 20 minutes which seemed like a decent amount. She loved it and said it was a lot of fun and wants to return in the next few days before it closes for the season. However, the one staff member I interacted with at the entrance to the snowtubing left a bitter taste in my mouth. He was not kind, polite or helpful. Came here for snow tubing. We booked a 9am appointment (opening time) after reading that the place gets busy. I'm glad that we did this, because we had 6 runs in an hour because the crowds werent that bad. However, they got crazy at 10AM when the next slot arrived... we did 2 runs in about 35min, and then left because the lines were too long. We arrived 20min earlier than our slot, which was perfect to find a park, check in and make our way to the tubing spot. Note that everything is really close to the parking lot. read more

I haven't been snowtubing in a REALLY long time but I was pleasantly surprised at how much fun this was at Campgaw. There was not enough snow for skiing when we went in the beginning of January, but there was definitely plenty for tubing! What to wear: snow boots, ski gear, hat, gloves. Make sure you don't wear anything you don't want to get dirty. What to expect: the magic carpet that takes you up the hill tends to stop pretty frequently. Be prepared to walk with your tube. There is a staff member at every line of tubers - they will instruct you on how to sit. It can go pretty fast, especially if you have the hard shell! Campgaw is a little two-lift mountain near Mahwah in northern NJ. Definitely a beginner mountain with tubing and some easier slopes for the kids to learn on (via instructors/class) and greens through the trees to practice on. Their black courses are more like a tough blues at the big mountains but are good for beginners learning to carve their way down a slope. Lines are bit long - covid form for getting into camp is the first stop with a temperature reading, then the hut to grab tickets and a long line if you want rentals. The lift 2 has a middle stop for the easier greens in the mountain, took a little to get used to it. Seats on the lifts are old and small, so it does feel easy to fall off of. Lines are long during the day on weekends and shorter at night or weekdays. The timing for tickets is always a little iffy - sometimes not posted for passes until only a week before or five days. And they did limit the mountain tickets sold when covid was bad - unlike some other PA mountains. If you're an experienced skier/snowboarder, skip this place unless you need a warmup. It'll be too boring going straight down the slope again and again. For beginners willing to wait in line, not bad at all. And for $45 for a all-day pass, even on holiday weekends, it's not going to break the bank. read more

I go here a lot. There's a lot of different things you can do. Camp Gaw isn't great for anything, but because of it's location and variety, it's well worth it. There's a lot of different picnic and hiking areas. There's a lake that you can fish in or take a walk around. The mountain has a beginner and intermediate area for skiing or snowboarding if you're just beginning or don't want to drive further away. I remember coming to this place several years ago before the pandemic. Most of the trails were open and all of the lifts were operating. This time when I came only one lift was open. The lines were long. Only one trail was open. It's like they forgot to take care of all the rest of the trails. It seems pretty neglected if you asked me. The price to ski here is not really worth it. Sure you can go night skiing here, but what good is it if you only have one trail? Having given this review, cannot knock the people that work here. We are a family of beginners. The trails here are perfect for learning. The just for me instructor for my toddler was friendly and patient. The group instructor did his best in relation to the size of the group. Group size was too large for two instructors. But I was there on a holiday week. When the mtn was getting crowded around noon, they started aggressively checking for tags and removing parents and grandparents from spectating. This didn't really bother me, thinning the crowd was better and safer for everyone. Instead of waiting to aggressively remove people, they probably should have just kept people away since the start of the day. I use the word aggressive to describe their tones and facial expression. Family friendly ski mountain with plenty of nearby hiking trails. Mostly a beginners track, the pricing and accommodations are very serviceable. Polite staff and easily arranged lessons make this a good choice for newbie skiers/snowboarders to learn - before that family ski holiday to Tahoe or Vail. ;) Top Tip: Weekdays are less crowded and an 8am arrival on weekends will get you a couple of hours of continuous runs before the crowds arrive. Small mountain. Perfect for a toddler to learn how to ride. There are COVID safety rules in place. They check temperature, require social distancing and masks and make you sign a form that you understand risks and where not exposed. It's a small mountain but it has a black diamond option for a novice to practice. Slots fill up quickly. Need to reserve 48 hours in advance to get a spot - although private lessons may be available same day. They also have tubing. We have not tried it, but the lines there were long. Groups come in busses to do it. The amount of people didn't make me too comfortable. Things I like - it's close (30 min drive from north jersey), they have lots of group classes for kids and a great place to start. If you are not coming to ski or tube, there is a little picnic area to sit in but not a lot of room to walk around. The only downside is that the weather didn't cooperate and there wasn't a lot of snow. This isn't the type of skiing where you can picture endless chains of snowcapped mountains. This is the type of skiing where new yorkers go learn how to safely maneuver themselves down a slippery slope before they drop some money on a ski trip to some larger mountain that requires an airplane ride. Campgaw is within a really close driving distance from NYC and is perfect for a day trip. Online reservations were available, although the system was a bit clunky. You get what you need to get done -- lift tickets, lessons, rentals, etc. Rental equipment was a bit beat up and kind of muddy, thanks to the recent balmy temperatures. I went on that one weekend where it actually felt like winter, and the snow machines were going strong the whole day long. They were loud, but hey who is to complain when they're covering the slope with fresh powdery snow? The trails were generously rated for what they were, in comparison to other ski resorts. Lift lines weren't long (there was only one lift operating), but the seats did get all wet and icy from the endless snow being blown. There is a nice enclosed area with heat and seating for your non snow activity companions to spend the day. Overall, this is a great escape from NYC and for beginners to learn how to ski. read more

What a terrible experience and a complete waste of $60 for myself and my husband. I booked snow tubing because the website claimed they were only selling 180 tickets per session and we appreciated that they were attempting to limit the crowds however on 2/13/21 this was certainly not the case at all. We paid for a session from 7-9, and by the time we got to the front of the tubing lane, it was 7:40!! The crowds were endless and not managed very well. All in all, we went down a total of 3 times. To top things off, the slope was so narrow that most people made it just half way at which point there were teenaged workers stationed there to give people a push the rest of the way. It's neither here nor there. You pay $100+ per person to get a group lesson, but they don't separate groups by age and it's 1 instructor for about 5 of us. Most of the instructors are kids. We got stuck with a kids who cried and complained the entire session, then we had a lady who I'm not sure what her deal was, but she was stuck in our group of beginners, but complained about needing to be bumped up to advance and tried so hard to show off her tricks down the slope, only to end up tumbling over guard-nets couple times, taking away copious amount of time from our instructor. I literally didn't learn anything from our hourlong lesson (which actually ended earlier than an hour). Their "learner's slope", I call it, is so congested with people and kids that I was telling my partner how much of a hazard it actually was doing ski lessons there. You had other instructors who were zooming down the slope with kids who hadn't perfected slowing down or stoping yet, almost hitting others who are barely learning to "pizza" their way through. People blasting and bumping to each other at full speed with sharp skis out. Even a few times I felt like I bent my knees so much causing sprain because I had to emergency stop by falling down just to get out of the way of a kid and their kid-instructor from steamrolling me with their skis, also so I don't inadvertently hurt the kids. After the "learner's slope", there's a beginner's slope next to it, where you get to by riding the conveyer belt shared with the learner's slope. This is such a good place to go if you have kids, you're a pro teaching your kids, or a pro needing to have fun. It'll be cheaper for experienced people, without the $100+ tag price for lessons. Their highest slope looks like a fun height for advanced level. They have cable carts that take you up there! With adrenaline pumping, we made the mistake (or made a wonderful memory, if you ask me) of going to their middle level slope and though we almost broke legs few times tumbling down, it was so fun! But learn from our mistake, don't ride the cable car slopes if you aren't confident up the wazoo with the lower sloped options they have. They had emergency people on deck skiing around. Even checked in on us when my partner and I were helping each other get up for the billionth time on the more advanced slope. And have us notice that we indeed were on an advanced slope and very kindly advised us to go to shorter ones for our safety. They have gears available for rent if you need, they have lockers and bathroom in basement. They have hot cocoa and other foods we didn't partake in but saw everywhere! The place is PACKED and you will see kids at the lost and found section at least once an hour. If you go early morning like we did, prepare for the blazing sunshine on your eyes. Some people didn't wear their ski masks, but I couldn't see a thing skiing down had I not worn mine. During our visit, they were diligent on mask-wearing indoors which I thought was great given the dense population in close proximity. They have skiing times till 8pm so they got you covered on the bright lights at night. Overall, place would be good for advanced people, but for the price tag beginners session and experience, it isnt. Do note that they have private lessons available for $180+ per. read more

What a frightening experience. Do not buy any tickets for Campgaw ski area. My child had ski beginner class here on Feb. 20th，but when I went to pick him up after he finished the lesson, I was horrified to find that my child suffered a badly fractured arm, he even fell down on the ground caused of great pain,I immediately took him to the hospital ,my 8 years old child was diagnosed with a misaligned fracture of the right wrist. I even don't know what happened to my child due to taking care of my little one. My child told me that as he stood facing the instructor an adult dressed in black jacket hit him from back and skied quickly past him without stopping,my child knows that guy who hit him was one of the ski area coaches. I called Campgaw ski area next day to find out how my child had been hit during class time . A Manager named Landy answered my call only saying she will call back to me but she never call me again,I waited for 5 days and continued to call Landy every day，Landy disappeared she never answered my calls. Particularly irritating was the staff's persistent claim that Landy would call me back to cheat me！This is unacceptable to anyone.I really can't imagine that they are such indifferent, perfunctory, they deliberately deceived a grieving mother ！They show zero care about children only take your money forever! Every mother has a right to know how her child got great damage only after an hour of class time！They can't tell the truth because it was their coach who hit my child!This is my child's first ski lesson,he doesn't know how to protect himself in case of an emergency while skiing , this is why I pay them for the lesson,this is the reason I need a coach,at least they should put children beginner in a safe area for class& keep children safe during class hour! especially when the coach hit a child so hard! I will never forget me and my child stayed at the hospital for 6 hours that night,when doctor put his bone back to place he crying and screaming aloud caused of the great pain and fear,I can do nothing only cry and look at him! How terrified and grieved I am at that time!Only mom knows how much pain and fear my child endured!After treatment my child's bone still not straight .He has never laughed since that day of fracture,he kept silent every day,this caused him great damage both physically and psychological！ We drove here for 2 hours&line up for 2 hours for rental ,but my child was injured in his favorite ski lesson and it wasn't because of his own mistakes.This is really terrible! Located off of Route 202 and 287 in Mahwah, N.J., Campgaw Mountain skiing, snowboarding and tubing is ideal for beginners. They have a learning center called magic carpet which is a gentle slope and if you wish you can purchase lessons as well. I would say that age 6 is a good starting age. You will find a lot of students from Ramapo college skiing. snowboarding and tubing here. Campgaw is only three miles from the Ramapo campus. Bergen county residents get a 20% discount and the convenience of getting to the slopes in 30 minutes or less. Campgaw is the only slope in Bergen County. The tubing is fun for all ages. You get a 2 hour slot from Mon-Fri for $26-$28 dollars. Buy your reservation online. You can not just show up and expect to get a 2 hour slot. They will probably refuse you. In 2 hours you can get 30 or more runs. Reserving a two hour slot keeps the lines shorter. The slope is moderate not steep with plenty of time to stop at the bottom. There is a pull rope to get you and your tube back up to the top of the hill. You have to sign a release form before they hook your tube to a line and pull you to the top. Since Campgaw is under thirty minutes from my home, it is convenient to just pack-up and head to the slopes later in the day. I like to ski during the week since there are considerably less crowds. Mon-Thurs (4-8pm) is only $25. The ski slopes are intermediate in difficulty probably disappointing advanced and expert skiers. The day I was there the snow making machines were going full tilt producing a machine groomed packed powder. The base was 18"-24" with fresh snow fall, it do not enjoy icy conditions as much anymore. Yeah, it gets icy. The lodge is adequate and they serve hot and cold food and beverages. The staff looks like mostly young people. Check their website for snow conditions, times, price and discounts. Due to Covid-19, there is a temperature check at the gate, health screening form, masks must be worn, 6' social distancing must be maintained and hand dispensers are available in some locations. read more

If the weather is bad and you are unable to make your appointment, for e:g a day like today when my car is stuck on snow (see photo) and it would be dangerous to drive to their location an hour away, they will not be considerate & will either offer you no alternate dates or will charge you an additional $15 per person to change the date even though the weather conditions is no fault of yours. We had my son's birthday party with a small group at Campgaw this past Saturday and the overall experience was awful. We booked AND PAID FOR a party from 9:30-10:00 on Saturday which was to include french toast sticks and hot chocolate for the kids and parents.  As of 9:50, the food and beverages were not there and the table where the kids were sitting wasn't even set up (no tablecloths, plates or cups to be found).  I spoke to the young lady who ran the party and let her know that I was taking the kids tubing because what was happening was unacceptable and that we would be back around 11 and I asked that the hot chocolate and french toast sticks be ready.   We got back to the table around 11:15, the young lady working the party was nowhere to be found and there was no food or beverages at our table.  At that point, I went into the concession area to ask for everything to be brought out immediately.  The food finally came out at 11:25 and to be clear, this food was supposed out for the kids at 9:30.   My wife booked the party through the head of group sales (Jerry) and in the weeks leading to the party he did not respond to my wife's multiple emails and I left AT LEAST four voice mails in an attempt to go over the details of the party and never received a call back. read more

This is where I learn to ski and I just think that it is to small. Barely a mountain and they have no lodge, you have to sit in the cold while you eat. The lifts are slow and sound like they are rotting on the inside. Trails were fine and ski patrol was ok, some of them didn't even know what they were doing and were just making things up harder. Campgaw is a small ski resort with one slope, 2 lifts and a beginner area with 2 carpet. Its lift ticket is really affordable with many different pricing options based on the time its valid for so it can be very competitive. We went on a Sunday afternoon so we bought the 1pm to 6pm lift ticket for $39 per person. The beginner area wasn't that crowded and the line for the carpets weren't that long. They only have 1 slope and 1 of the ski lift goes to the top of the slope and a 2nd lift is a little shorter than that which brings you to an area that is not as steep. However the 2nd lift wait time was probably 30-45 min based on the crowd level, while the 1st lift was about 10 min which was manageable. Despite buying the lift ticket online, we waited probably 30 min in line before we were able to get our lift ticket, we had our own equipment but the rental line per their own website can potentially take 1 to 1.5 hours. Overall I liked the place and its good for beginners also its close proximity to the NYC area. read more

There are two places to eat - the prices are quite reasonable. The food is fine, but there is not much of a variety. In the lodge is a wood burning fireplace which is nice to relax and get warm at. There is ski instruction - great instructors. The tubing has been updated so that there is a moving walkway which takes you to the top of the mountain. We visited Campgaw for a couple of hours of tubing in the Sunday before MLK Day. The temperatures were positively frigid, but we all had a nice time. There's only one snow tubing hill with many, many lanes. It's well organized in that everyone goes down at the same time after a countdown, like it's a race. It can be a little slow, because the people in all 10+ (?) lanes need to get situated in their tubes. The staff members are courteous older teens/early 20s. The place feels very safe, with lots of parents staying in the heated eating/resting area while the kids go up and down the hill. As an elder in my early 40s, I only went down a few times, as I spun quite a bit at the bottom of the hill and became dizzy. Great times had by those 12 and under! We shall return. read more

Went here on a Sunday to do some snow tubing. Pros: Close to home about 30 minutes from the GW Bridge. Snow tubing for $24/person for 2 hours ($10 to rent helmet). Conveyor belt which brings you up the hill. I felt the lines moved pretty well. Free parking. They have a snack bar, but just bring your own lunch. Anytime I had a question, there was a staff person around. Cons: After 12 pm, the place gets pretty crowded. Snow can be very icy. The staff mostly consists of young people who sometimes didn't have an answer or didn't know what to do. To piggyback off that point: During my second run, the staff person pointed out that I looked ready to go due to my enthusiastic stance. Then when he told us to go he inexplicably said "3,2... JUST KIDDING!". This forced me to stop suddenly and jam my foot. The pain was intense, but I didn't want to be the guy carried off the mountain by the ski patrol. Due to the pain, I probably should have went to the lodge and asked for my money back, but I carried on with this thought in mind: "Getting workers in the form of kids usually stinks, so just know what you're doing/where you're going so you don't need their help & you should be good."
